LGF Exclusive: The Infamous Dec. 5, 1938 Issue of Father Coughlin’s Newsletter

The prototype for today’s right wing social conservative hate radio
History • Views: 23,772

Here’s a look at one of America’s ugliest chapters — the bizarre antisemitic visions of Father Charles Coughlin, a Roman Catholic priest who was the Rush Limbaugh/Glenn Beck of his day. At its height, Father Coughlin’s radio show boasted more than 30 million listeners — at the time, a full third of the population of the United States. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, Coughlin was an outright supporter of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis.

Coughlin also published a newsletter named Social Justice, peddling a virulent brand of antisemitism that’s more than a little shocking to read, 70 years later. Among other disgusting content, Social Justice published The Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

LGF reader Mich-again got his hands on one of the most infamous issues of Social Justice, published December 5, 1938, and scanned the whole thing for us: Scanned copy of Antisemitic Icon Father Coughlin’s ‘Social Justice’ (Dec. 1938). I’ve taken his full resolution images, scaled them down about 50%, and made them into a slideshow.

Why is this issue especially infamous? Because it contains an article by Coughlin titled “Background of Persecution” which is translated almost verbatim from a 1935 speech by Nazi Propaganda Minister Josef Goebbels. It’s on page 7 of the slideshow.

Sorry to be off-topic so soon, but I saw this on Wikipedia.

President Hugo Chávez told the AFP "We shall remember Gaddafi our whole lives as a great fighter, a revolutionary and a martyr. They assassinated him. It is another outrage."

You'll be meeting him in hell soon enough Chavez.

Coughlin also published a newsletter named Social Justice,

"SOCIAL JUSTICE!" OMG! COMMUNIST!

He blames the mistreatment of Jews on the secret Jewish government.

Paul Ryan Tells Student He Should Work Three Jobs To Pay For College, Not Use Pell Grants

LOWE: I come from a very middle-class family and under President Obama, I get $5,500 per year to pay for school, which doesn’t come close to covering all of the funding, but it helps ease the burden. Under your plan, you cut it by 15 percent. I was just curious why you would cut a grant that goes directly to the middle- and lower-class people that need it the most.

RYAN: ‘Cause Pell Grants have become unsustainable. It’s all borrowed money…Look, I worked three jobs to pay off my student loans after college. I didn’t get grants, I got loans, and we need to have a system of viable student loans to be able to do this.

The second concern I have is, in the health care bill — people don’t know this — for budgetary gimmickry reasons, the administration and Congress at the time, took over the student loan industry. So they had the federal government, the Department of Education, basically confiscate the private student loan industry.

Going through it...... really? The reign of that bigoted nutjob Isabella, who plundered North America and ruined the Spanish economy in the process ( with REAL inflation with GOLD, not the boogaboo of Paulites today), was the height of Spain? Or of Louis XIV, who fought pointless war after another war for nothing more than personal glory and bankrupted his country?

I thought this was America, for Christ's sake. Since when do we respect kings?

With Libya overwith, all eyes should turn to Yemen and Syria.

I'm going to be blunt. Yemen should break in two. North Yemen and South Yemen haven't been a single state (before the past 20 years) since the Ayyubid dynasty under Saladin. That was 823 years ago.

Asked About Herman Cain Profiting From His Presidential Campaign, Spokesman Calls The Arrangement ‘Synergy’

FANG: On the last campaign disclosure for Mr. Cain, it showed that the T.H.E. New Voice, the company owned by Cain, pays a salary, a large salary*, to Mr. Cain. And there’s a revelation this week that the Herman Cain campaign committee has given over one hundred thousand dollars to this private company that’s paying Cain. Does this company still provide a salary to Mr. Cain?

GORDON: Well, I would say T.H.E. New Voice handles the book. And so the whole book enterprise and the campaign are distinct entities. Clearly there’s a synergy between the book, the book tour, and the campaign. But they are separate entities.

re: #30 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

The American academic system is all out of kilter - and part of the problem is the student loan burden. It acts as a subsidy for the schools, and lays the debt on thick on students - many of whom have little chance of repayment within a reasonable period of time and is likely to result in delaying life choices for years (getting cars, married, kids, advanced education, homes, you pick!). But, the Pell Grant isn't part of that problem. It's a solution. More grants and holding the line on education costs will do more than expanding access to loans. Behind health care, education costs have risen more than inflation and there's no real reason for that to be the case.

from wiksterpedia

Earl Alfred Boyea, Jr. in 1995 showed that the Catholic Church did not approve of Coughlin. The Vatican, the Apostolic Delegation in Washington, D.C., and the archbishop of Cincinnati all wanted him silenced. They recognized that only Coughlin's superior, Detroit Archbishop Michael Gallagher, had the canonical authority to curb him, but Gallagher supported the "Radio Priest". Due to Gallagher's autonomy and the prospect of Coughlin leading a schism, the Roman Catholic leadership did nothing

On November 20, 1938, two weeks after Kristallnacht, Coughlin, referring to the millions of Christians killed by the Communists in Russia, said "Jewish persecution only followed after Christians first were persecuted."[31] After this speech, and as his programs became more antisemitic, some radio stations, including those in New York and Chicago, began refusing to air his speeches without pre-approved scripts; in New York, his programs were cancelled by WINS and WMCA, leaving Coughlin to broadcasting on the Newark part-time station WHBI. On December 18, 1938 two thousand of Coughlin's followers marched in New York protesting potential changes to the asylum law that would allow more Jews (including refugees from Hitler's persecution) into the U.S., chanting, "Send Jews back where they came from in leaky boats!" and "Wait until Hitler comes over here!" The protests continued for several months. Donald Warren, using information from the FBI and German government archives, has also argued that Coughlin received indirect funding from Nazi Germany during this period.[32]

After 1936, Coughlin began supporting an organization called the Christian Front, which claimed him as an inspiration. In January 1940, a New York City unit of the Christian Front was raided by the FBI for plotting to overthrow the government. Coughlin had never been a member but his reputation suffered a fatal decline

So they had the federal government, the Department of Education, basically confiscate the private student loan industry.

He's leaving out the part that that "private student loan industry" was entirely government guaranteed -- banks offering the loans took on *zero* risk, yet collected all the origination fees and interest (including from loans that default -- the taxpayer picked up the tab for those).

It's just cheaper for us to let the government do it direct rather than subsidizing "private" for-profit entities to do it for us. So yes, that savings was applied to the health care premium support.

Really, have they accomplished anything and no I don't count opposing Obama's every move policy.

I can't think of anything.

A grumpy old fart and the son of Ron Paul. Yeesh. It should be in black and white.

Maybe a Keebler Elf.

Not enough girth or hair to be a hobbit.

IMHO, Primary sources are the ONLY sources.

Not me. Secondary sources can be useful, especially as views change over the years. Even with primary sources, there is always interpretation involved.

True, I guess I always have to sift thru the second and tertiary sources to even find the primary sources. So, I kinda get it all anyway.

re: #41 HoosierHoops

Sorry to hear it, hoops. I just got word last night my oldest cousin passed - she was a year older than my dad. After the estrangement, she and her daughter, who took care of her for 9 years, were the only family members who would speak to me, even at my own mother's funeral. There is so much loss in this world, but you're a good son to him. That's what will matter most when the time comes. It will come for us all; none can escape it.

The original scans are here at my Picassa site. Social Justice 12/05/1938

You can increase the magnification and read the print better there.
