Onion: Decoy Website Launched to Lure Morons

But we already have that

It’s getting harder and harder to tell where reality stops and The Onion begins: New Decoy Website Launched To Lure Away All Moronic Internet Commenters.

SAN JOSE, CA—With funding from dozens of news outlets and media companies, the groundbreaking outkube.com launched this week, providing an online destination where pandering and incendiary content is used to lure moronic Internet commenters away from all other websites.

According to sources, Outkube boasts thousands of articles and forums carefully crafted to draw in dim-witted web users and effectively quarantine obtuse, uninformed comments on topics such as gay rights, Ryan Gosling, the threat of Sharia law in the U.S., health care reform, whether Kobe is better than LeBron, Jewish control of the government and media, the New York Jets, the Second Amendment, and professional wrestler John Cena.

Most stories on the site are reportedly preloaded with several witless and profanity-laden comments specially designed to incite retaliatory remarks.

“Outkube provides an immensely valuable public service,” said YouTube CEO Salar Kamangar, one of the decoy website’s founders and principal investors. “With its unparalleled expanse of sensational content and lack of filters or character limits on postings, Outkube attracts the broadest possible spectrum of jabbering halfwits—from paranoid reactionaries to know-it-all pricks to racists to plain old dumbfucks.”

“Now you can read an article or enjoy multimedia on your favorite websites without having to endure the revolting, barely coherent comments these troglodytes used to leave at the bottom of every page,” Kamangar continued. “At long last, a new era has dawned for the Internet.”

Actually, there’s already a network of websites in the real world that’s a magnet for reactionaries, racists, sociopaths, and ranting loons of all stripes.

It’s known as “the right wing blogosphere.”

Yep. Tyrants always find ways or seek reasons to justify their atrocities. That's one of the sticking points with humanity. A society that condones any form of barbarism is destined to continue on the path of violence and barbarism.

Not antiseptic.

I think that our soldiers would have him surrounded by MP's and protect him physically so he could stand trial. They would hurry him into a truck or to a cell where he would be secure from rioters.

They wouldn't display him for the camera, no gun shots in the air, a doctor would see to his wounds . . .

Yes, but our soldiers haven't suffered what the Libyans have suffered. I don't condone what they did, but I understand it (meaning I understand it as much as someone who has never suffered such things can).

Not to mention that this was an unusually vicious war.

The American Civil War wiped out 1.5-2% of the nations population at the time in 4 years

The Libyan Revolutionary war killed .38-1% of the nations population in just 8 months and a week.

I simpler terms, they were doing demographic damage much quicker in Libya than in our case.

Edit: And the US Civil War is an usually bloody one in its own right.

And here's something on the type of smart bombs the French Air force used to halt Gaddafi's convoy. Called the "Hammer" series, they would make Charles Martel proud:

The AASM SBU-64 infrared (night vision) version of the French Hammer series of smart bombs recently entered service (and is for sale to qualified export customers.) Hammer is a smart bomb kit that can be added to a 250 kg (550 pound) dumb bomb. The kit includes GPS guidance and wings, which provide over 50 kilometers of guided gliding before hitting the target. The SBU-64 enables the pilot or weapons officers to more precisely guide a bomb that has arrived at GPS coordinates carried by the bomb. This is useful if you don’t have a precise location of a target.

Two years ago, France ordered 3,400 of the new AASM bomb kits from manufacturer Sagem. Currently, the new kit only fits 250 kg bombs, but versions for 125, 500 and 1,000 kg bombs are in development. Last year, a new AASM software upgrade was successfully tested, which allowed a 250 kg bomb to hit the target directly from above. Previously, laser and GPS guided bombs have all come in at the target horizontally. By coming in vertically, collateral damage, to nearby structures occupied by civilians, is limited.

For me it's more on a visceral level. I'm not thinking of the man Gaddafi when I see this. I'm seeing a human being dragged in the middle of the dirt being shot at, having his throat cut, and squealing like a pig being slaughtered.

Had I grown up as one of the rebels I would have even considered this and acted otherwise. But how many times must we continue to sacrifice another man in the quest for peace? I not another man dead one too many? Would I have done as the rebels here.

Do I understand? In great part mind you because while I say this I'm not thinking about "war crimes" and prosecuting anyone. It may be cultural chauvinism on my part. Maybe I'm wrong there who knows.

I understand your frustration. At some point, I finally accepted that all we can do is work for ongoing improvement. It will end, when we either evolve into some other form of life and Homo Sapiens ceases to exist, or the planet dies.

Sucks, but there it is.

79 Shiplord Kirel  Thu, Oct 20, 2011 9:31:35pm

I don't have any pity for Gaddafi but it would have been far better if he had been taken into custody and put on trial. His treatment by the mob will look worse and worse as the years pass and passions cool. For example, it is easy to understand the rage of those who killed Benito Mussolini and mutilated his corpse, but it still seems an all but inexcusable atrocity from our perspective today. A trial for Gaddafi would have been especially beneficial since he almost certainly would have made a fool of himself in all his megalomaniacal glory. This was not so certain with Mussolini, who might have risen to the occasion and defended himself with defiant energy. Hermann Goering, a weaker man than Mussolini in most respects, managed it, helping to obscure his reputation as a buffoon and sinister clown.

80 Targetpractice  Thu, Oct 20, 2011 9:32:16pm

re: #71 Gus 802

I like to think that I'm a better man than that, that I would never engage in such barbarism. But, again, I'm not somebody who actually lived through what these men have. They've lived in states of fear and rage for decades, knowing that a wrong word, a wrong decision, could lead to their entire family being "arrested" and executed. To see the man responsible for all that, stripped of his guards, his weapons, even his bravado might have been simply too much to pass up.

I consider what happened to him to be no different than what happened in the aftermath of past revolutions, past wars. If there's any real difference, it's that modern technology, even something as simple as a cellphone camera, has allowed us a front-row seat to the horrors of the battlefield.

True. My guess is there were also varying opinions on and reactions to the atrocity at that time, too.

The right wing response to Daffy's messy departure has been a sight to see, and one I prefer not to see again, though I hold out little hope of that.

No, I had not heard of them. I was playing off of Martel being known as "The Hammer" ( fact I'm sure was not lost on those who named the bomb series), not off of the name of a group composed of LePen-type assholes.

I understand that and sympathize with it. We've grown so used to the figure of Gaddafi, the dress-wearing nut with bodyguards and military surrounding him. Geller and other haters aside, Charles Martel was in fact a hero to Framce, and the force he defeated was engaged in an act of unjust aggression best thought of as an armed robbery writ large. The fact that said force was Muslim is not the point, the point is that they were unjustly aggressive (though it must be said that in 732 Islam was definitely being spread by the sword). The fact that some assholes have latched on to him does not taint Charles Martel, it only proves that bigots will try to latch onto convenient bits of history to try to disguise the fact that they are bigots.

Deport all the illegals and Americans will take their jobs!

Or not:

Few Americans take immigrants' jobs in Alabama

Potato farmer Keith Smith saw most of his Hispanic workers leave after Alabama's tough immigration law took effect, so he hired Americans. It hasn't worked out: They show up late, work slower than seasoned farm hands and are ready to call it a day after lunch or by midafternoon. Some quit after a single day.

In Alabama and other parts of the country, farmers must look beyond the nation's borders for labor because many Americans simply don't want the backbreaking, low-paying jobs immigrants are willing to take. Politicians who support the law say over time more unemployed Americans will fill these jobs. They insist it's too early to consider the law a failure, yet numbers from the governor's office show only nominal interest.

"I've had people calling me wanting to work," Smith said. "I haven't turned any of them down, but they're not any good. It's hard work, they just don't work like the Hispanics with experience."

I was at Koi in Evanton tonight with my family, as it was half price wine night, and we had what I felt was a very good bottle of Chardonnay that normally went for $50 a bottle. The only wrinkle is that it was imported from France. Does that mean I have to surrender my "Conservative" card?

We were talking about all the Paradigm Shifts in the last 20 years of our world in a previous thread. The effects we are seeing in the political sphere are mind-boggling.

Well, we ain't seen nothing' yet:

How is this impending revolution going to shape the world?

Ninety-eight percent of data transmitted today is in a language almost no one spoke 30 years ago. We’re in a similar period now. But this revolution will be more widespread because this is software that writes its own hardware.

People think this technology will just change pharmacy or bitch, but it’s much bigger than that. For example, it’s already changing the chemical industry. Forty percent of Dupont’s earnings today come from the life sciences. It’s going to change everything; it will change countries, who’s rich and who’s poor. It’s going to create new ethics.

Brave New World is going to seem like a Sci-Fi novel to my age-group. I'm already feeling the fear and cognitive dissonance creeping up. I can't image how I'm going to cope.

Anthony Watts Worst Nightmare.

A champion of the Urban Heat Island effect, Watts has been stoking the 'heat record is unreliable' meme for a long time. Basically it says urbanized areas (cities) are hotter than the rest of the surround area, warping the temperature record and biasing it high.

A study awaiting peer review says the Urban Heat Island effect adds a total of .06% to the warming.

speaking of language changing, I've been reading PG Wodenhouse lately (public domain free downloads for the win!), and its intensely hard to get used to the guys at the private schools constantly referring to their underclassman as their 'fags'. as in "He's Fagging for me"

re: #143 Dark_Falcon

No, but its not something I'm in the habit of doing anyways. It came up in the context of a weapons system with a name that lent itself to a Martel reference. Only that, and nothing more. I ask that you please accept this, and I am neither a bigot nor a liar about such things.

I didn't call you a bigot or a liar. I didn't call you anything.

The point was that there are more references to Charles Martel than just a dude from the 700s heroized by "France". You may not know about those references, but they are out there, and quite current.

If I was there, would I have shot him? No.
If I was a Libyan who spent the last 40 years wondering when his secret police might break in, kill my family, rape my kids and throw me in prison because he felt like it? I'll cut them some slack.

There's not really a parallel for the experience of being under an absolute dictator. The awareness that you are, ultimately, alive and doing your thing at someone else's behest, at all times, in all contexts. The excruciating self-monitoring--did I do something that will be counted against me?--always part of one's state of mind. The fear of contagious guilt, the fear that your fear is itself a transgression (it is).

Qaddafi was the arbiter of these people's lives--you live, you die, you disappear--a concept as much as a man. Imagine all of the contempt we've dumped on "Daffy"--his nutty speeches, his bizarre wardrobe, his affectations--then try and incorporate the knowledge that he...that farce...is the decider of your fate. There is no social contract, no recourse for correction: if government thugs arbitrarily laid hands on you--or your kids, or your parents--Qaddafi would be the genius, in the old Roman sense, that justified whatever they did. Every horror conducted by some minion or functionary of his government implicitly has his auctoritas behind it.

For the people of Libya Qaddafi's a concept--THE concept--of life and death. And right now they're killing that concept...and it's horrid to watch, because the ridiculous reality is that the force that loomed into their every moment was just matter and humanity.

What we're watching in Libya is deicide. Desecration.

There's an update at the end of that story:

Bethlehem police: Marijuana plants discovered during investigation of stabbings
[Link: www.lehighvalleylive.com...]

There are still no arrests in connection with the stabbings, but police have charged a 17-year-old boy in connection with the marijuana-growing operation at a home in the 300 block of Vine Street. Police are not identifying the boy because he is a juvenile.

Bethlehem police Lt. Mark DiLuzio said the boy is not a suspect in the stabbings, but officers visited his home to speak to him about the case. The boy wasn't home at the time, but a parent gave officers consent to search his bedroom. In a bedroom closet, the officers found four marijuana plants, heat lamps and other growing materials, DiLuzio said, adding it wasn't a huge growing operation.

Thanks mom.

Warren settles rape case lawsuit for $2.8M
[Link: www.detnews.com...]

Warren city officials have agreed to pay $2.8 million to a man who, more than two decades ago, was wrongfully convicted for the rape of a woman and spent almost 12 years in prison.

Jeffrey Moldowan was convicted in 1991 on attempted murder, kidnapping and criminal sexual conduct charges involving his former girlfriend, who had been severely and permanently injured and left on a Detroit street in 1990. In 2002, the case was thrown out, and a 2003 retrial resulted in an acquittal. A co-defendant, Michael Cristini, was acquitted the following year. In 2005, Moldowan sued the city, a police detective, a bite mark expert who had testified at his trial, Macomb County and the Prosecutor's Office. A lawsuit filed by Cristini in 2007 is pending, according to the Associated Press.

Bite mark testimony is worthless. Here is a good story about a Mississippi bite mark "expert":

Video Shows Controversial Forensic Specialist Michael West Fabricating Bite Marks
[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]

On Aug. 9, The Huffington Post reported on the case of Leigh Stubbs, a Mississippi woman serving a 44-year sentence for assault and drug charges. Stubbs was convicted in large part due to the testimony of Michael West, a disgraced bite mark specialist. Though West has been largely discredited, prosecutors and state officials in Mississippi (and to a lesser extent in Louisiana) continue to defend convictions won based on his testimony.

In Stubbs' case, West presented two key pieces of evidence. The first involved the bite mark wizardry that made him famous, and then infamous: West claimed to have found bite marks on alleged victim Kim Williams that medical personnel hadn't seen. He then used a dental mold of Stubbs' teeth to perform an analysis on the marks, and would later testify that it was a "probability" that Stubbs had bitten Williams.

What do you know, some decent news out of the Indiana legislature:

Police-search bill close to a vote
[Link: www.indystar.com...]

Indiana lawmakers reacting to a recent court ruling that said people cannot legally fight police entering their homes are closer to proposed legislation that would specify when violent force can and cannot be used against officers.

The legislative panel is due to vote next week on a bill that would allow people to use violent force to resist police entry if they do not know that it's police at their door or if the officers are not performing official duties.

The proposed legislation would not cover suspected cases of domestic violence or imminent harm, crimes in progress or the serving of warrants.

The Indiana Supreme Court last month upheld its contentious earlier ruling saying people cannot violently resist police they think are trying to enter their homes illegally.

I don't think it goes far enough but it's a start.

McAfee not haunted by drink-and-swim incident
[Link: www.indystar.com...]

It is early Tuesday night, two days short of a year since Pat McAfee's early morning Canal swim and Nick Nolte-esque mug shot turned the Indianapolis Colts punter into a punch line around town and around the nation.

So where does the Colts' free spirit spend that inglorious semi-anniversary?

Right here at the Broad Ripple Tavern, the last bar he visited (he thinks) before he went for his swim and then got arrested for public intoxication after attempting to flag down a passing car. He wanted to call a cab, but . . . "At that point, my phone had some water damage," he said with a smile.
....
One year later, he's able to laugh at himself, make fun of his little aquatic adventure and even produce T-shirts that read, "I Swam With Pat McAfee," the proceeds going to different charities every month.

An update on the IN VS. Planned Parenthood court fight:

State to appellate court: Allow Planned Parenthood defunding
Judge questions Indiana's definition of a 'qualified' Medicaid provider
[Link: www.indystar.com...]

The state is asking a three-judge panel at the U.S. 7th Circuit Court of Appeals in Chicago to reverse an Indianapolis judge's order putting the defunding law on hold. It's not clear when the panel will issue its written decision.
.....
Kenneth Falk, legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Indiana, argued that providers could be disqualified only for Medicaid-related reasons, such as an invalid license or a conviction for Medicaid fraud, not the fact that the provider offers abortion services to privately paying clients without using Medicaid funds.

At least one judge on the panel seemed to share Falk's reading of the law.

"In what sense is (whether a provider offers abortions) a qualification?" Judge Diane S. Sykes asked Fisher.

"The fact that Planned Parenthood performs abortions doesn't have anything to do with the quality of the medical process," she said. "It's not akin to fraud . . . The problem I have with the state's interpretation of the phrase 'qualified' is that it's infinitely elastic. It can mean anything the state wants it to mean."

In the Fox show, which was set in 2011, the main character Charles, played by Kiel Martin, dies in a hovercraft accident, and after meeting St. Peter at the gates of heaven, is judged to be neither good enough for heaven or bad enough for hell. He's sent back to earth to help his teenage self, played by Matthew Perry, to live a more virtuous life.

But right before the scene in the pilot where Martin meets St. Peter, guess who else pays him a visit? None other than Colonel Gaddafi, with his trademark fatigues riddled with bullet holes. "Dead? Assuming it's a laptop, the hard drive is on the bottom of the computer. If you're resting it on something, that puts pressure on the hard drive enclosure, which could amplify the sound. Basically, if it didn't previously make that sound and it does now, it's probably a Bad Thing (tm).

'The regulations already reflect that there are religious obligations among members.'

The U.S. Army Cadet Command stated that the regulations do not ban religious items of clothing but that they must not be exposed or cover uniform.

A spokesman said: 'Wearing the uniform demonstrates personal responsibility, attention to detail and being part of a team.

'We're not discriminatory. She's invited to come back anytime, but it has to be in accordance with the regulations.'

Interactive Periodic Table of Swearing Extends Your Rude Vocabulary

The machine features more than 100 brightly colored fruit machine buttons which, when pressed, unleash creatively foul language — perfect for the lazy or sore-voiced hater. Most of the swears are not for delicate ears, but a few of the tamer ones include: bollocks to that (Btt); silly bastard (Sb) and stupid old wanker (Sow). You can check out the video below to see some of the stronger ones.

"Only" 60? It's always 60 degrees - plus or minus 5 here. 55 right now, to be exact. Shorts and t-shirt weather for jogging with the dogs.

Considering the high here isn't even going to be 60 degrees, yes. :-P

On that topic, though, I got a laugh out of my family yesterday. Dad wanted to barbecue steaks for dinner last night, which was fine by me. I was running around looking for my sandals, and my wife tells me she put them in the closet because she figured I wouldn't need them anymore. I shot back, "Honey, I wear those when there's snow on the ground!"

After Alabama Immigration Law, Few Americans Taking Immigrants' Work
ONEONTA, Ala. -- Potato farmer Keith Smith saw most of his immigrant workers leave after Alabama's tough immigration law took effect, so he hired Americans. It hasn't worked out: Most show up late, work slower than seasoned farm hands and are ready to call it a day after lunch or by midafternoon. Some quit after a single day.
...
A crew of four Hispanics can earn about $150 each by picking 250-300 boxes of tomatoes in a day, said Jerry Spencer, of Grow Alabama, which purchases and sells locally owned produce. A crew of 25 Americans recently picked 200 boxes – giving them each $24 for the day.

Saw that yesterday. The original article also noted that if you got unemployment, it would put you at the top of the range of an experienced farm hand - so why would someone do that kind of backbreaking work when they can collect unemployment, instead of where the pay is contingent upon how much you gather.

It's an odd set of incentives/disincentives, work ethic, and runs contrary to the meme that illegals are taking jobs from Americans. It would appear that there are jobs that Americans simply don't want to do.

I mow my lawn and pull some weeds every weekend. A full effort at cleaning my entire yard takes about two hours...after which I deserve (and get) a beer.

When I was a kid I baled hay...fun job. Got $2.50 an hour. Worked my ass off for $20. When I took a break from college (aka dropped out for a few years), I worked for a beekeeper for $6 an hour. 10-14 hour days...backbreaking work during honey flow...but nearly every day was a picnic lunch in some field or by a stream...best fuckin' job I ever had - though I basically had to live with my folks the whole time.

Right. And back in the 18th century, when people were coming up with the philosophical/moral framework that underpins the "private property" clusterfuck we have today, there was at least a fallback option: you could head out west and stake a claim to some land.

Now that wasn't a picnic, of course, it was a very hard option to take. But it was there, and it allowed people to have agency and to some extent to determine their own life outcome.

Now, there's nothing. It's work for peanuts in the blazing sun, or get puny social support that's being slashed every day. Either way you're fucked in the long term. If you're twenty-one today and in the bottom third of what people laughably call the "classless" US resource scale, your prospects are extremely limited. That's why the OWS demands are "that of a peasantry, rather than a working class".

The media have done an excellent job in distracting people from this reality, but then the Catholic church managed that in the 17th century for a while and the guillotine still came out eventually.

The only people who are surprised think tomatoes grow on styrofoam pads in groups of four with plastic wrap around them. You'll notice when Fox & the rest are asking people for their views on immigration, they're asking clerks at shopping malls and not Republican voting farmers who rely on their immigrant farm hands to stay afloat.

Shall we add some missing information? Yes, yes we shall.

Farmers pay a split rate. There's a piece rate, and if it's below minimum wage they pay that amount. Less, of course, various taxes and fees. (What, you thought the water you were drinking is free?)

If you're new to the field, you're going to get minimum wage for a few days. Few being however long it takes your speed to get to where pick enough that 50 cents a box beats minimum wage.

The article says those those whitebacks got $24. If so, they worked half a day. 4 hours at $7.25 is $30 with about 20% withheld.

Assad's busy ringing up the butcher's bill in Syria. Another 13 protesters murdered by Assad's goons to retain power. While Libya was able to count on NATO for assistance, I don't think that's forthcoming anytime soon. The NATO effort came into being in part because Khadafi used air power to attempt to suppress the rebel groups, but Assad is keeping things largely on the ground. The opposition in Syria isn't nearly as well organized either, and top level diplomats haven't defected in large numbers to suggest that the regime is crumbling. So, the protesters will continue to take it on the chin.

Because criminal charges against corporations don't work well. You can't send the corporation to prison. You can only send some of the officers and employees, each tried independently.

Said it before, I'll say it again. I despise the principle of corporations having "personhood" because it allows them the benefits without the consequences.

EAGLE, Colo. -- A hit-and-run driver who plowed into a cyclist in Vail will has been sentenced to probation, community service and making charitable donations -- a sentence that has outraged the victim.

They reiterated the rights of the protesters' 1st Amendment right to gather and protest, but they also aired quite a bit of angst and anger towards protesters who didn't care that their rights were infringing on the rights of people living in earshot of the protesters.

In Bid to Cut Costs at Some Texas Prisons, Lunch Will Not Be Served on Weekends
By MANNY FERNANDEZ
Published: October 20, 2011

HOUSTON — Texas prison officials last month ended the decades-old practice of serving last meals to inmates about to be executed after one man ordered an elaborate feast of hamburgers, pizza and chicken-fried steaks that he did not eat.

But the 300 inmates on death row are not the only ones coping with food restrictions.

Thousands of other inmates in the Texas prison system have been eating fewer meals since April after officials stopped serving lunch on the weekends in some prisons as a way to cut food-service costs. About 23,000 inmates in 36 prisons are eating two meals a day on Saturdays and Sundays instead of three. A meal the system calls brunch is usually served between 5 and 7 a.m., followed by dinner between 4 and 6:30 p.m.

...

Texas is slowly turning into Honduras.

The Millennium Hilton, which is across the street from Ground Zero and two blocks from Zuccotti Park, has sued the Port Authority and Silverstein Properties over the noise.

Silverstein Properties contends that it ceases all work at 6pm and picks up again in the morning on areas it's building (2, 3, and 4WTC). Much of the excavation is related to the PATH hub and transit work for the 1 line underpinning. The rest of the site is primarily focused on construction, which is less noisy than the demolition that had permeated the site for so long.

The Port Authority has paid for certain soundproofing but it's a constant fight - and they claim that the noise doesn't exceed levels set by the City. If you're not one of the designated buildings, you're out of luck.

The dull roar from the WTC construction is actually not as bad as it could potentially be, but it's omnipresent. It also dulls out the drum circle coming from Zuccotti Park - but if there's a lull in construction, that drumming would echo through the area, which has a growing residential population.

Prosecutor: Off-duty Irvington cop watched 17-year-old girl get beaten, then helped assailants flee

RARITAN — An off-duty Irvington police officer watched two women beat a 17-year-old girl in a Raritan parking lot and then helped the attackers flee, authorities said today.

Herne LaCoste, 40, of Plainfield, was arrested at his home Tuesday in connection with his alleged role in the Sunday morning attack — which netted only the victim’s cell phone, bus ticket and MetroCard, Somerset County Prosecutor Geoffrey Soriano said.

LaCoste has been charged with second-degree official misconduct, unlawful possession of a firearm and possession of a weapon for an unlawful purpose. The 13-year police veteran is one of three people arrested in connection with the crime....

Newark soldier's plans for life after Afghanistan tour cut short by insurgents' bomb

NEWARK — The mission to Afghanistan was his third deployment, and after journeys to Iraq and Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, Jorge Oliveira told friends and co-workers this would be his last.

He was finally going to take time for himself, he told them. While on leave last month, he bought a new motorcycle and had closed on a new house in Elizabeth. Once his tour was up next year, he wanted to "travel the world" on the vacation of a lifetime, his sister said.

Those plans will never come to pass.

Oliveira, 33, a staff sergeant with the New Jersey Army National Guard, died Wednesday of injuries he sustained during an attack on his unit in the Paktika Province of Afghanistan, the Department of Defense said Thursday. The Newark soldier, who was also an Essex County Sheriff’s detective, is at least the 140th service member with ties to New Jersey to die in the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq since 2001...

"Dead? It is impossible for me to be dead," the fictional Gaddafi says, before St. Peter sentences him to spend eternity in hell. It's a delightfully corny and really weird scene.

Hacker Hero ‘Weev’ Stops By Occupy Wall Street [Video]

Andrew Auernheimer ( a.k.a. “Weev“), one of the most martyred heroes of the hacker community, showed up at Occupy Wall Street earlier this week. “This is even better than Alec Baldwin and Kanye West combined!” – Everyone in Anonymous.

In 2008, The New York Times magazine wrote a story called “Malwebolence: The World of Web Trolling.” Lots of scary stories about 4-Chan and it’s /b/ board, Anonymous, etc., etc.

For the main photo of the story, the story used a fresh-faced Mr. Aurenheimer, then 22. The piece made him out to be anarchist misanthrope: “I hack, I ruin, I make piles of money,” he boasted. “I make people afraid for their lives.” He is/was not a fan of the Federal Reserve, and *sigh* the Jews.

Buchanan pines for the good ole days of the Segregation Era

if you take a look at the state of California, for example, where that already exists, you see a state that is de-Christianized, or perhaps the most de-Christianized of the American states, you find that a situation where there’s a black-brown war among the underclass among these gangs which are proliferating and in the prisons. You find a state that is bankrupt or not exactly bankrupt but whose bond-rating is the worst in the United States, who was issuing script. You have something like 23% of the folks there are illiterate and you have half the people in Los Angeles County speaking a language other than English in their own homes. All of America is going to look like this in 2041 and my question is, what holds us together? How do we survive as one nation and one people if we can’t even understand each other?

I grew up in Washington, D.C. when it was 400,000 black folks and 400,000 white folks and segregation was wrong and that existed there, but we had a common religion, a common culture, we read all the same newspapers, we listened to the same radio, we cheered the same ball teams, we read the same history, we celebrated Christmas, Easter, Columbus Day, all the rest of it. And all these things are going out and the problem is once this common ground where you rise above, if you will, diversity that has always been a problem, if you a rise above that to the common ground upon which we can all agree and stand, that’s where you achieve the unity.

Violence erupts in Greece:

Man dies as Greek demonstrators clash

A MAN has died in Athens after Greek anti-austerity demonstrations, as hundreds of communist unionists battled anarchist protesters throwing firebombs for control of a key square in the capital.
The man in his 50s died in hospital yesterday, police said, declining to speculate on the cause of death, but Greek media said he was wounded on the sidelines of a gathering of 50,000 people outside the Greek Parliament.

Media reports quoted the man's wife outside the hospital as saying that he had suffered head wounds during the clashes.

...At least 16 people were hurt in the clashes in Syntagma square near the parliament building, most of them suffering head injuries from stones, firebombs and other missiles, the health ministry said earlier.

As tens of thousands joined anti-austerity demonstrations on the second day of a general strike, Skai television broadcast images of a captured communist being beaten by dozens of assailants in the square.

"The ambulance service has been notified to pick up a wounded person who needs to be hospitalised," a health ministry source told AFP.

Masked youths attacked with firebombs hundreds of communist unionists tasked with maintaining order during the Athens demonstration, which capped a 48-hour general strike called by unions against the government's economic policies.

The communists counter-charged and pushed the attackers back, and the two sides began throwing stones at each other with the police initially keeping back.

Yikes!

What impresses me about that is that they have always been very "concerned" about Oakland: they have been activists for years, advocating on behalf of the children there living in poverty, about the poor medical care access for many people living in Oakland, about the high unemployment in Oakland.

It is isn't like their "concern" about what's going on in Oakland is selective in such a way as to try do discredit OWS.

Deputy Joshua Hatter, 31, of Lovingston, was arrested Monday and faces three felony charges. Brooks said Hatter wasn't on the job at the time of the incident.

Hatter is accused of firing a gun in an occupied building, destroying valuable property and kidnapping. Those are all felonies. He also faces two misdemeanor charges. One person involved in the altercation suffered a minor injury, Brooks said.

Hatter has been on the force for about four years and he was dismissed this week, Brooks said.

Maybe not.

Then again, it is reasonable for them to have concerns about media seeking to gain audience through sensationalizing anything that might come across as negative - or by capitalizing on those elements that are unambiguously negative.

The issues are real. Imagine a civil rights protest from the 60s, and media went around seeking to portray people like MLK in a negative light - or seeking to focus on the relative minority of civil rights protestors who advocated a violence.

Of course that happened, and of course it was a problem for civil rights advocates - who had a primary goal of gaining media exposure for racial injustice.

Sure - I get all of that, and it remains to be seen how effectively this group is going to handle the media going forward.

But consider, for a minute, how early media coverage treated the civil rights movement. Mostly, the focused on the objections raised by the local civilian population, and from the business community to the money lost as a result of the activism. Sound familiar? Suppose the media of the time focused (at least to some degree if not in balance) on how people who were marching relieved themselves when they were prevented access to bathrooms (would you imagine some public urination might have taken place?) How about if they had focused to some degree on the debris left behind after marches, or after clashes with the local police?

I'm not attempting to equate the movements or the relevant media bias in the two situations - but only to illustrate how: (1) the issue of how to deal with the media is complex and (2) the question of "fairness" of treatment is always subjective.

The problem I have is if someone wants to pursue an agenda rather than consider the full context for the questions at hand.

The issue of how to deal with the media is always complex.

My personal opinion is that it's unwise to openly state that you as a group won't allow the media access to something that will, to some extent, live or die by media coverage and popular sympathy.

In this case, not nearly fifty years ago, not in Alabama, right now in Oakland, ten miles from where I sit, I think this was a misjudgement. So was someone's dog biting a reporter's sleeve, but that may not have been something that could be helped--dogs have no sense for making a good impression.
