Herman Cain’s Campaign Manager Digs Cigarettes

Not a hoax, but possibly a new wingnut meme
Wingnuts • Views: 39,359

Like many people, my first reaction on seeing Herman Cain’s bizarre campaign video was that it had to be a hoax.

I mean, come on. Who could ever consider Mark Block — twitching and shaking his head spasmodically, speaking with a weird flat affect and nicotine-stained teeth, then taking a drag off a cigarette — to be a good spokesman for a presidential campaign?

Answer: Herman Cain, that’s who.

For those who doubted its authenticity, Mr. Block has weighed in with an e-mail to the CBS News senior political writer Caroline Horn: “Only comment is – I smoke. Its a choice. It’s Block being Block.”

Youtube Video

Could this mean that the right wing will now revive their pro-tobacco “smoking is good for you!” campaigns? It wouldn’t be difficult; the propaganda machines are still in place. They simply shifted focus to denying global warming.

The ad has done its job*. It's got you talking about Cain's campaign (vaporware and all), his plans (malware), and all for what is likely a fraction of the cost of a more traditional ad.

It's keeping his name in the news, and that's what he thinks is most important. That he's so far out of touch with reality and ran with an ad that is on par with the Mike Gravel ads shows just how far off the rails the GOP has gone on a national stage.

*Then again, most folks still aren't fixated on the 2012 elections and aren't even paying attention - leaving the reactions to the political pundit class and blogosphere. Cain gets to sell his outsider status, even if he's a consummate insider.

A "Fox Insider" email just popped up with this:

From a cold-blooded perspective, this ad is doing the job of keeping Cain as the top subject of discussion and thus a part of the news cycle.

Actually, my general assessment of Cain's campaign is that he (or his handlers) have got a keen sense of advertising as a tool: short, memorable memes, catchphrases, and a grasp of the power of repetition. He's marketing himself, and 999, like a product, focusing on establishing brand awareness and a vague-positive association for his "brand." This level of focus makes him stand out, and seem consistent, compared to his competitors.

The question I have is whether his objective is really the presidency, and where the brand-image methodology will carry him where he wants to go. I'm still of the opinion that he's trying to set himself up as a pundit, not a president.

Parody Twitter Created for 'Occupy Greenwich'

GREENWICH, Conn. – New Canaan may have been the latest hotspot for the Occupy Wall Street movement over the weekend, but a twitter has sprung up this month to Occupy Greenwich in a satirical fashion.

OccupyGreenwich's tongue-in-cheek Twitter page is characterized with a photo of a young, blonde, Caucasian man wearing a tweed blazer, preppy tie and a luxe sweater wrapped around his shoulders. The top of the page reads, “Shake a stick at Wall Street if you like, but the Real 1 percent left for Hedgistan long ago … and you’re not welcome here. Release the hounds!”

Over the weekend, nearly 100 protesters went to the New Canaan home of General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt to take part in the first known Occupy Wall Street rally in Fairfield County. The movement began a month ago in Zuccotti Park in Manhattan. Since then, hundreds of thousands of people have rallied around the world in large and small cities.

Greenwich, with the highest median income in the state, may see a movement in the coming days. But for now, it’s just fun and games for OccupyGreenwich, which has just 37 followers since its first tweet to #occupywallstreet on Oct. 6 that said, “Close the border to Connecticut and keep those smelly hippies in Manhattan.”

The obvious parody Twitter plays on Greenwich’s reputation as one of the richest towns in America with posts such as, “My wife says she has absolutely nothing to wear to the revolution” and “Let the 99% take the morning train from Greenwich. Our drivers chauffeur us straight to Wall Street. Let them eat cake too!”

OccupyGreenwich also tweets, “No need to come up to Greenwich, CT. Our gates are high & pointy” and is followed by OpWallStreet, the international Occupy Wall Street movement’s Twitter page.

Heh.

The problem with stunt advertising like this is that even if you 'succeed', if you get talked about, it's not true that all publicity is good publicity. It's just not. It's like Trump. There's no actual there there, there's nothing propping this up.

Cain also endorsed Tiger Woods for president in 2016. He then said it was a joke. I think he may be just tapdancing at this point and trying to get out of this, but no matter what he does he's still treated like a serious contender.

It reflects more on the GOP than on him, honestly.

Cain also endorsed Tiger Woods for president in 2016. He then said it was a joke. I think he may be just tapdancing at this point and trying to get out of this, but no matter what he does he's still treated like a serious contender.

It reflects more on the GOP than on him, honestly.

re: #72 The Ghost of a Flea

I think it's even more cynical than selling books and punditry. I believe he's already gotten what he's after, which is something along the lines of "first Black" history-making blahblah Republican candidate yadda yadda. Selling books and punditry will of course be a natural result of this achievement, fwiw.

It doesn't take a whole lot of thought or effort to do that as a Black Republican, since there's not much competition.

Fischer doubles down on his Nazis were gays derp

This whole thing is about Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender History Month. So my question again, if this is about homosexual history month, are they going to feature all the homosexuals that had an enormous impact on history?

Are they going to feature John Wayne Gacy? He's the homosexual pedophile, remember, that killed thirty-three young boys and young teenagers and buried them under the crawlspace in his house. He was a homosexual. Is he going to be a part of their display?

Adolf Hitler had a record as a homosexual prostitute in the streets of Vienna in the 1910s. He was denied promotions in the German military in World War I because of his homosexual behavior. He formed the Nazi Party in a homosexual bar, a gay bar, in Munich. All of his enforcers, almost every one of the Brownshirts; all the officers and almost all the Brownshirts were homosexuals. Is that going to be a part of Lesbian, Gay, Bi, Transgender Month? We will wait to see.

At the high school I used to teach at, we had events for Black History Month. We featured people like Dr. King and George Washington Carver, instead of Idi Amin.

We also had events for European Heritage Month. We featured people like Thomas Edison and Shakespeare, instead of, say, Hitler.

Whoever taught you that teaching about a group of people in history means emphasizing the serial killers was either mistaken, or possible a scholar of serial killers.

While it is certainly regarded as a fact that SA chief Ernst Röhm and a number of his charges in that militia WERE gay, the fact that Hitler had him killed in the aftermath of the Night of Long Knives and subsequently sidelined that entire organization would tend to indicate an anti-gay attitude on the part of Nazi leadership.

Nobody in the GOP is willing to call Perry out on his nirtherism...

I thought it would be worth asking the campaigns of the two frontrunners — Herman Cain and Mitt Romney —for comment on [Rick Perry’s birther comments]. Are they willing to condemn it? After all, Romney has vouched for Obama’s U.S. citizenship in the past and has made Perry’s unelectability central to his campaign, and it seems likely that Perry’s flirtation with birtherism will fuel doubts about whether he has the gravity and temperament to be a good general election candidate.

No luck.

Both campaigns declined to address Perry’s comments. “We’ll pass,” Cain spokesman J.D. Gordon emailed. A Romney campaign spokesperson also declined comment.

Just the type of gutsy leadership this country needs.

FRC: Bush Era policy shows that Obama is anti-religion

Poe and Perkins were discussing with the manufactured controversy over a Texas veteran’s cemetery that prohibits a volunteer group from holding religious services at a funeral if the family does not request it. The New York Times points out that this rule was created in 2007 by the Bush administration, but according to Poe, the policy is actually all Obama’s fault.

As Kyle noted, “To the Religious Right, preventing outside groups from attending funerals and offering prayers at services where they are not wanted or requested is a violation of the religious freedom of the volunteers.” Last month, Poe attacked the cemetery director as “anti-Christian, anti-religion and anti-veteran” and introduced legislation that he said would end the supposed “religious censorship.”

There's also the paper trail of Hitler and co.'s correspondence regarding Rohm and how foul they found his sexuality.

Hitler was analyzed with tremendous detail after WW2, and basically everyone alive who had contact with him was interviewed. This included his romantic liasons prior to Eva Braun. The "gay Hitler, gay SS" thing is taking a kernel of truth about Rohm and the SA and distorting to suit homophobic needs.

Bullshit. They are intruding upon a private ceremony that they have no legal right to be at. Period, end of story, no further discussion.

Now, after the ceremony has concluded and the Family and Guests have departed, if they wish to conduct a prayer ceremony, more power to them.

But they wont, as they then can not inflict their religion on those who wish nothing to do with it, as well as not getting any publicity for their stupid little stunt.

The Religious Right's Twisted View Of Religious Freedom

The plaintiffs, aided by a conservative legal group, the Liberty Institute, contend they should be allowed to use a Veterans of Foreign Wars script dating from World War I that refers to the deceased as “a brave man” with an “abiding faith in God” and that seeks comfort from an “almighty and merciful God.” The institute has broadcast the dispute nationwide with slick videos and a Web site declaring that “Jesus is not welcome at gravesides.”

...

The lawsuit, which alleges religious discrimination by the government, and videos have generated angry letters and Internet commentary against the Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as demands from members of the Texas Congressional delegation, mostly Republicans, that the Obama administration fire the Houston cemetery director, Arleen Ocasio.

Department of Veterans Affairs officials say that the original policy, enacted under President George W. Bush, resulted from complaints about religious words or icons being inserted unrequested into veterans’ funerals. They noted that active duty military honor guards, including the teams that do funerals at Arlington National Cemetery, say almost nothing during their ceremonies.

“We do what the families wish,” said Steve L. Muro, the under secretary for memorial affairs. “I always tell my employees we have just one chance to get it right.”

Though two of the largest veterans organizations, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, have criticized the Houston National Cemetery, some veterans’ advocates have risen to the department’s support. Those advocates say that families who want prayers can have them and assert that the Liberty Institute has blown the dispute out of proportion to embarrass the Obama administration.

Oakland Police Use Rubber Bullets, Flash Grenades, And Smoke Bombs To Evict Occupy Oakland

Late last night, Oakland police, under orders from the city, began surrounding the Occupy Oakland encampment in preparation to oust the protesters from Frank Ogawa Plaza.

Approximately an hour ago, hundreds of Oakland police officers raided the camp. Dressed in riot gear, the police used rubber bullets, flash grenades, and gas canisters to forcibly evict and/or arrest the demonstrators who remained in the plaza. Posted Oct. 25, 2011, 2:39 p.m. EST by OccupyWallSt

Those who said that the Egyptian revolution was peaceful did not see the horrors that police visited upon us, nor did they see the resistance and even force that revolutionaries used against the police to defend their tentative occupations and spaces: by the government's own admission; 99 police stations were put to the torch, thousands of police cars were destroyed, and all of the ruling party's offices around Egypt were burned down. Barricades were erected, officers were beaten back and pelted with rocks even as they fired tear gas and live ammunition on us. But at the end of the day on the 28 th of January they retreated, and we had won our cities.

It is not our desire to participate in violence, but it is even less our desire to lose. If we do not resist, actively, when they come to take what we have won back, then we will surely lose. Do not confuse the tactics that we used when we shouted “peaceful” with fetishizing nonviolence; if the state had given up immediately we would have been overjoyed, but as they sought to abuse us, beat us, kill us, we knew that there was no other option than to fight back. Had we laid down and allowed ourselves to be arrested, tortured, and martyred to “make a point”, we would be no less bloodied, beaten and dead. Be prepared to defend these things you have occupied, that you are building, because, after everything else has been taken from us, these reclaimed spaces are so very precious.

America and Egypt are not the same. It's a serious mistake to compare our police and theirs for many many reasons. Running battles with police is a bad idea, protesters will always end up on the short end of the stick. Unlike Egypt we still have a stable society and government that is not going to collapse anytime soon. The police are not your enemy.

re: #169 Kragar (Proud to be Kafir)

That's kind of related to what I think this protest thing will end up going down.

Even European tourists keep mentioning how weirdly peaceful the American Occupy protests are. It's probably going to keep going on like it is, growing and extending until the police in say Boston or Chicago decide its time to 'clear the streets' (ala '68).

... and then I don't know what'll happen, thats when things'll start getting weird.

or ask Adrian Schoolcraft

For 17 months, New York police officer Adrian Schoolcraft recorded himself and his fellow officers on the job, including their supervisors ordering them to do all sorts of things that police aren't supposed to do. For example, downgrading real crimes into lesser ones, so they wouldn't show up in the crime statistics and make their precinct look bad.

Monterey Bay Aquarium exempted from ban on wastewater dumping

Although famous for conservation and its sustainable and environmentally friendly practices, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is also one of the largest wastewater dischargers in the protected Pacific Grove area of the bay.

Last week, the State Water Resources Control Board exempted the aquarium [PDF] from a state ban on dumping wastewater in a marine protected zone.

The board decided the aquarium’s conservation and public education benefits far outweigh any dangers posed by the millions of gallons of treated fish, bird and mammal waste it dumps back into the bay.

It's bad for thee, not for me.

Store Owner: Break-ins Linked To Occupy Boston

BOSTON -- A Boston store owner is speaking out against Occupy Boston after her store was broken into.

At Congress Card and Tobacco, a worker had to board up a window after the fourth break-in in less than a month.

"The big items are the tobacco products because cigarettes are running $60 to $70 a carton, and they're walking out with garbage bags full of them," said owner Linda Capillo.

The first break-in was Sept. 29 -- the day before Occupy Boston set up camp in nearby Dewey Square. Capillo is convinced the break-ins are linked to the growing crowd.

Tuesday's break-in was at 4:45 a.m.

"They came in the side window, and there was a piece of cardboard in the doorstep and it had a saying on it," Capillo said.

She said the cardboard was similar to signs seen at the Occupy Boston camp.

Surveillance video from inside the shop was dark and grainy, but police are investigating.

An Occupy Boston spokesman said anyone could grab a sign from their encampment.

"We don't support that kind of thing. We speak out openly against violence, against vandalism. We are openly against that," said Alex Ingram, an Occupy Boston spokesman.

Capillo said she's been on Congress Street for 23 years and never had anyone break into the store before.

It's a mystery. I hope the cops find the criminals and lock them up.

Based on the whole record, including the applications, Initial Study and Draft Mitigated Negative Declaration, comments, and responses, there is no substantial evidence that approval of the exception will have a significant effect on the environment because of the terms, special conditions, and prohibitions that comprise the Special Protections in this resolution.

They concluded it wouldn't really do any harm, because of other measures that are in place.

Well, the Republicans did say they want to "take America back." Whether this refers to the late 18th century, or the Victorian Age, I don't know. Just as Al Gore can't be credible on global warming unless he's currently crouching in a cave, nobody protesting against the economic inequities of our system that have led to a dangerous division between the 1% and the rest of us can be taken seriously unless they are dressed in simple hempen clothing they wove themselves. re: #264 RayFerd

It's astonishing how stupid some of these laws are. It was only "wastewater" because the aquarium was done with it, and was going to bring in fresh seawater. It's not as though the water had been in some industrial process after all.

I guess sea water becomes wastewater because captive fish swam/ate/peed in it. But lets remember they do filter the water removing the waste products. Yet, different fish will again be swimming in that water as soon as it's released. They are just lucky to get the exemption I guess, or they would have to have used sea water hauled away or "processed' for "proper" disposal.

[Link: californiawatch.org...]
According to a report [PDF] released by the board earlier this year, the aquarium takes in about 1,400 gallons of seawater a minute, 24 hours a day, every day of the year. It then discharges more than 2 million gallons a day. The system is open, meaning seawater is pumped in and discharged continually.

The board acknowledges the discharge does contain waste, albeit “at very low levels.” The only exceptions noted were copper in one seawater sample and chlorine in others.

“None of the seawater samples exhibited toxicity effects,” the report's authors wrote. However, storm water runoff from the aquarium contained waste and in some cases exceeded state standards.

Aquarium officials, for their part, say they do everything they can to minimize the harm the aquarium poses to marine life right off its shore. For instance, the aquarium routes all seawater exposed to birds and mammals through ultraviolet sterilization before dumping it back in the bay. This process gets rid of bacteria and other microbes.

Other discharged water, particularly water that has been in contact with exotic species, is run through ozone treatment in order to kill any larvae or eggs that could potentially reach the bay.

And water treated with chemicals or pharmaceuticals is isolated and not released back into the bay.

Hey. This was a topic from a month ago. HPV vaccines for men. Here's the latest.

Panel Recommends HPV Vaccine for Boys and Young Men
By GARDINER HARRIS
Published: October 25, 2011

Boys and young men should be vaccinated against the human papillomavirus, or HPV, to protect against anal and throat cancers that can result from sexual activity, a federal advisory committee said Tuesday.

The recommendation by the panel, the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, is likely to transform the use of the HPV vaccine, since most private insurers pay for vaccines once the committee recommends them for routine use. The HPV vaccine is unusually expensive. Its three doses cost pediatricians more than $300, and pediatricians often charge patients hundreds more.

The committee recommended that boys ages 11 and 12 should be vaccinated. It also recommended vaccination of ages males 13 through 21 who had not already had all three shots. Vaccinations may be given to boys as young as 9 and to men between the ages of 22 and 26.

Continues.

This is a Federal panel.

GOP Congressman: Giant Jesus statue not religious

A statue of Jesus on U.S. Forest Service land in the mountains of Montana may be moved after an atheist organization argued that its placement on public land violates the separation of church and state. Rep. Denny Rehberg (R) has come to the statue’s defense, a monument to World War II veterans, and has even established a website for the statue. Rehberg appeared on Fox & Friends this morning to promote his effort, but ran into some trouble while responding to a statement from the foundation behind the lawsuit. “Just because it’s maintained and was put up by the Knights of Columbus does not make it a religious statement,” he said. No, the fact that it’s a statue of Jesus makes it religious.

Scott Walker's Recall Plan: Rake in Unlimited Cash

The fight to recall Wisconsin Gov. Scott Walker begins November 15, when the 60-day window opens for progressives, Democrats, and other Walker opponents to gather the more than half-million signatures they'll need to trigger a recall election. Conveniently for Walker, a loophole in Wisconsin elections law opens up the same day and spans the same 60-day window. For that two-month period, the state's $10,000 donation limit for individuals giving to gubernatorial candidates is out the window. That's right: Walker can raise unlimited campaign cash for his recall defense as his opponents round up support to recall him.

They'll be working? What jobs?

We have a hard enough time feeding the people we do have on the planet without actually destroying the planet.

Have you been using Stainless Steel? Some of these addons have as much content as the original game. The work that went in to that Middle-Earth module will make your hobbies feel inadequate.

Ethnomasochist?

Gee, Pat, that's an awfully big word.

It sounds more scientific than 'race traitor'.

Paged by Alouette.

They took pretty long, I think, to extend it to boys. Even if they weren't going to get any diseases themselves, how could they not be seen as "vectors"?

I thought it was just a matter of finishing the testing.

/for the people that have to monitor my tv camera, that is.

Actually, I think there was a case like that, maybe last year? The school had given the kids laptops, and then decided to 'monitor' them through the cameras.
