Hilton had defended its pricing policies after the original report came out, saying attendees at the legal training conference in Washington had feasted on a continental breakfast spread. It included fruit, coffee, juice and the muffins, Hilton said.

When I worked for state gubmint, which was not that long ago, our budget for "refreshments" for meetings was $3 per person. We could get a plate of pastries and cut them in half (really, half a 1000 calorie pastry is plenty enough for a person), and we'd go to the store and buy a couple of boxes of cookies, and make a couple of pots of coffee. We could come in UNDER budget. It can be done.

Justin Bieber Lashes Out At Senate's New Copyright Bill
It seems tweeny-bop sensation Justin Bieber wants to be taken seriously as a policy wonk. During an radio interview on Friday morning, Bieber came out against the Commercial Felony Streaming Act, or S.978, a bill that three senators proposed in May that would make unauthorized online streaming of copyrighted material a felony, punishable by up to five years behind bars.
This law could also affect anybody who covers or remixes a popular song and uploads their work to YouTube. On DC's Hot 99.5 FM, Bieber singled out Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar, a co-sponsor of the measure and a member of the state's Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party. "Whoever she is," said Bieber, "she needs to know that I'm saying she needs to be locked up—put away in cuffs."
Continues.
The bill:
Bill S.978 or the Commercial Felony Streaming Act is a bill that is pending introduction to the United States Senate floor. It was proposed by Amy Klobuchar, Chris Coons, and John Cornyn on May 12, 2011.[1] It is an amendment to USC 2319, Title 18, that would make unauthorized streaming of copyrighted material for the purpose of "commercial advantage or personal financial gain", a felony (under current law, unauthorized streaming is only a misdemeanor). The penalty could include up to five years of prison-time. It defines illegal streaming as streaming ten or more times in a 180 day period. Furthermore, the value of the illegally streamed material would have to be greater than $2,500, or the licensing fees would have to be over $5,000...

The MPAA and the RIAA apparently have decided that spending billions annually suing young girls and grandmas for downloading a couple songs "illegally" just isn't winning them friends anymore and have decided to shovel millions instead into the pockets of politicians who will gladly make anything illegal if it means more "campaign contributions."

Interesting science story of the day:
Scientists chart gene expression in the brain across lifespan
The "switching on" or expression of specific genes in the human genome is what makes each human tissue and each human being unique. A new study by researchers at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Lieber Institute for Brain Development, and the National Institute of Mental Health found that many gene expression changes that occur during fetal development are reversed immediately after birth. Reversals of fetal expression changes are also seen again much later in life during normal aging of the brain. Additionally, the team observed the reversal of fetal expression changes in Alzheimer's disease findings reported in other studies. The research team also found that gene expression change is fastest in human brain tissue during fetal development, slows down through childhood and adolescence, stabilizes in adulthood, and then speeds up again after age 50, with distinct redirection of expression changes prior to birth and in early adulthood. Their findings are published in the Oct. 27, 2011, edition of Nature. All of the data are available to the public as a web-based resource at: [Link: www.libd.org...]
[...]
Stopping or changing the changes in the older brain is vital if life-spans are to be prolonged with any meaningful experience.

Summary on the satellite that went up this morning.
Key science objectives and capabilities of NPP include:
• Climate change -- contribute to long-term records of global environmental data critical for understanding the dynamics of climate change
• Health of the ozone layer -- daily measurements of the atmospheric ozone layer that will determine whether the ozone layer is recovering as expected
• Natural disasters -- monitor wildfires, volcanic eruptions, snowstorms, droughts, floods, hurricanes and dust plumes
• Weather predictions -- a sounding instrument will collect information about cloud cover, atmospheric temperatures, humidity and other variables critical to accurate weather prediction
• Vegetation -- map global land vegetation and quantify changes in plant productivity to understand the global carbon cycle and monitor agricultural processes to predict and respond to food shortages and famines
• Global ice cover -- monitor changes to Earth’s sea ice, land ice and glaciers to track the pace of climate change
• Air pollution -- monitor the spread of health-sapping pollutants such as soot, particulate matter, nitrogen dioxide and sulfur dioxide
• Temperatures -- maintain a global record of atmospheric, land surface and sea surface temperatures critical to understanding the long-term dynamics of climate change
• Earth’s energy budget -- make measurements to determine how much energy is entering and exiting Earth's atmosphere

Speaking of subject, as pointed out earlier today Romney apparently (or not, depends upon who you asked) changed his mind about AGW. Now we get to this:
Perry Formally Files in New Hampshire, Hits Romney on Global Warming
On the same day that his campaign accused Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney of flip-flopping on global warming, Rick Perry told supporters here on Friday that he is not “ignorant” on the issue.
“I don’t put myself in this ignorant category,” he said, describing his position as “thoughtful, skeptical.”

Yes indeed. A certain +1 from me.
I'm a bit dismayed with the overwhelming support for OWS after all we went through at LGF with extremists in the counterjihad blogs and Tea Parties. As long as there's interesting discussion and some level of nuance at least it gives me some hope that people are really paying attention and thinking.

Neat astro pic of the day:
Latest views of the V838 Monocerotis light echo from Hubble
Hubble has returned to the intriguing V838 Monocerotis many times since its initial outburst in 2002 to follow the evolution of its light echo. Two new images provide the most astonishing views of V838 to date.
The unusual variable star V838 Monocerotis (V838 Mon) continues to puzzle astronomers. This previously inconspicuous star underwent an outburst early in 2002, during which it temporarily increased in brightness to become 600,000 times more luminous than our Sun. Light from this sudden eruption is illuminating the interstellar dust surrounding the star, producing the most spectacular "light echo" in the history of astronomy.
[...]
V838 Monocerotis is close enough, and the dust around it moving fast enough, that we can see changes over just a year. Here's a pic showing the difference of 11 months, from 2005 to 2006.

It's way too soon to say much-In the end it may be that OWS as a movement is a more welcoming home for indies than the Tea Party ever was. And we do have to remember the Occupy is only a couple months old. It does need to coalesce and firm up. It needs a singular personality. It does not need or want a co-opt like the GOP did to the early T.P.
They need to get off the grass and get some offices. But that will force them to deal with the inertia of the status quo, and make some hard compromises. They may have to wait to elect some of their own as the TP did. They will have to demonstrate some majority power somewhere.

re: #117 freetoken
I should correct that; the changes seen are just do to the lighting - light from the variable star is reaching the outer edges of the dust cloud, thus illuminating it in 2006 (from our vantage point) which weren't being illuminated in 2005. Still, it's fascinating to see how the dust is forming into the shapes that eerily look like it is being directed by large magnetic fields (which may be the case.)

We run into alarmism almost everywhere. I've been on both ends of the spectrum in either being alarmist or being turned off by alarmism. Sure, people will say that AGW lobbyists are alarmist, but look at what's been done about AGW thus far? Not much from the looks of things. Most everything still has an on and off switch. Not everyone talking about AGW is an alarmist. At the same time many AGW opponents are alarmists themselves. It's a complicated feature of human behavior. Perhaps it is a survival instinct.

If you want to know why people call the police Very very Bad and Socially Unacceptable Names Sometimes:
Disturbing enough on its own, the Oakland PD then denied using SIM force on protesters at all and claimed that in fact, no one had been injured. Worse yet, after protesters were hit with an exploding device while attempting to come to the aid of Olsen, they had to carry him through the crowd, begging for medical aid even though dozens of Oakland Police looked on from the other side of their barrier.
maybe it's actually because they fucking lie, imagine that

I don't see that happening and it probably wouldn't ge a good idea if it did happen. I see OWS of a continuation of the antiwar marches. Dems may pander to them but are never going to deliver because of the economic and political reality we live in. The Tea Party did actually get their own true believers (aka extremists) elected and drove their party over the edge. I don't recommend the Dems follow the same path. They may pander but I don't think they'll ever deliver.
Much of what we're seeing now is backlash from Obama pandering for election (closing Gitmo, ending the wars, etc) but now he's faced with the reality of leadership. I'm quite happy Obama is a practical leader but the radical left is pretty pissed about it.

Thing is, the whole "alarmist" bit is just an excuse to ignore the evidence and instead try to play up anybody who wants to take AGW seriously as "rushing" things. If you speak up and say that we shouldn't screw around, instead putting into place laws that will help curb future carbon emissions, you get dubbed "alarmist" because you're not willing to entertain the BS belief that AGW is either A) a myth or B) not that big a deal.

That's going to be difficult in their present format. It's very easy for this sort of thing to go nowhere because consensus, internal fighting, and the sense that actually using the mechanisms of our free society to achieve good outcomes is sort of dull and might not work.
Also, as people have commented, the Tea Party was born with a USB drive sticking out of it to connect it to the mothership of the GOP. The Democrats are not assured the same kind of relationship with this thing, for several reasons, independents are harder to run, and the Greens--don't get me fucking started on the Greens. So making the leap into elections and conventional politics may not be possible, or for many, desirable.

I'm out on Long Island. I get into NYC quite a bit, though.
I moved to Flushing from Philly in '78. At one point I moved back there, and didn't last a week. This place gets into your blood. :)
I used to have nightmares where I was trapped back in Texas so farrrrr away from NYC with no money and was desperately trying to find a way to get back. I don't have them nearly as much as I used to, but every once in a while...
Maybe we can meet up for coffee or something one day.

I wanted to visit Edwards. Oh well. You need to make an appointment way in advance. Then be part of a group. It's a real pain in the arse. Saw Mojave from a distance. They have a chopper museum in the Bay Area. Around here is an air museum outside of Buckley. Not much goes on at Buckley. Air shows around here are kind of skimpy. Some C-17 was flying in right after Obama left town on Tuesday. Got some pics of those in Watsonville and went inside one.

It was just like we went back in time 30 years to all the quirks and foibles of getting along. I was having a conversation with her in my head about how all the dynamics among us were the same.

A green communist conspiracy that bratfart's gang apparently missed:
White House Garden Activist Calls for National Garden Strategy
Maine-based garden advocate, Roger Doiron, has a way of stirring the pot when it comes to the nation's food. Many credit him with having helped inspire First Lady Michelle Obama to plant her White House kitchen garden via a year-long social media campaign he led during the last presidential campaign. Using viral images and videos, Doiron's campaign garnered over 110,000 petition signatures, won the United Nations Foundation's "On Day One" contest for the best idea for President Obama to pursue upon taking office, and attracted broad international media attention. In a newly released TEDx video, Doiron looks beyond the success of the White House garden to what needs to be done next to help the country's food garden movement grow.
"Although a kitchen garden revolution has started, we're still scratching at the surface of what gardens can do and will need to do in an increasingly hot, crowded and malnourished world," says Doiron who is Founding Director of the nonprofit Kitchen Gardeners International. Citing statistics about obesity, hunger, projected population growth and peak oil production, Doiron makes a strong case for investing more heavily in food garden education and promotion as part of the solution to the world's health, economic and environmental challenges.
Among his proposals are the following:
- Creating a long-term National Food Garden Strategy designed to increase the number of new food gardens and their productivity. [...]
- Financing this new strategy via the next Farm Bill by reallocating taxpayer dollars away from commodity crops subsidies and reinvesting them in community-based food production.
- Using the federal tax code to promote gardening through a $1000/household garden stimulus package.
- Updating town and city codes and neighborhood association bylaws to allow people to grow food in front yards and in vacant urban spaces
- Encouraging garden entrepreneurship through the passage of local food sovereignty laws like the ones passed in several Maine towns this past year.
- Brainstorming new ideas to encourage more men to join the country's kitchen garden movement, a movement that is currently nearly 75% female.
- Developing new local networks or "suburban granges" capable of bringing gardeners together online and off.
Doiron concludes his presentation by urging more people to grow their own "subversive plots" citing gardening's ability to redistribute power away from the corporations that are currently putting food on America's tables and back into the hands of the people. "Gardening is a sort of healthy gateway drug to other forms of food freedom." says Doiron. "It's not long after planting a garden that people become interested in home cooking, preserving food and locating their local farmers' market."
SUBVERSION!! This communist clearly admits to subversion, and he has a direct line to the White House!

She spent yesterday in Chicago, including some time spent with Rahm at a Walgreen's, discussing food availability (said Walgreens having put in a produce department). Doesn't bother me any (though I remain quite skeptical of the whole idea of "food deserts"), since I actually find I agreed with those two's tastes in food most of the time. What do you want to bet that it was a mediocre lunch, too? I paid less than $76 for my entree at Spago last week, and it was the best food I've ever had. Banquets and other large, hotel-catered meals usually suck. $76 bucks for a hotel lunch? Idiotic.

Salt crust baked fish with veggies in a mushroom sauce. And the 12 layer cake for dessert. It was my birthday, and I've wanted to eat there for many years. So, what the hell?
It was awesome, and with taxes and tip it did cost more than $76...but I guarantee it was a far better meal than those State Dept folks got for lunch from Hilton.
Carrabba's makes a great lunch, and you can get out of there for under 20 bucks, and that would include a drink, taxes, and a generous tip. Jeez, Olive Garden's lunch is great, and is even cheaper. So it does bug me that Hilton charged taxpayers $76 a head for mediocre food. For $76 bucks a person they should have had foie gras and truffles on that lunch portion.
And I won't eat foie...poor geese...and it's liver. Yucky.

The one visited by Rahm Emanuel and Michelle Obama is something of an experiment, adding produce to see if such grocery items will sell. In northwest Chicago. where my parents live, there are dedicated produce stores in addition to supermarkets. So Walgreens sticks to its traditional role up there.
Walgreens does retain a sense of the history of their home city. Perhaps this can be best seen at their location on the southeast corner of Monroe and Clark in the Loop. The display windows carry photos from the turn of the century up till the early 1950's while outside Walgreens has maintained the "Time and Temperature Bell" from when the space was occupied by the flagship branch of the now-defunct Bell Federal Savings.

Then why do you remain skeptical about such an obvious concept like the demonstrable lack of healthy, affordable market availability for food in certain areas? It's not a matter of what you know, it's a matter of what you're willing to admit. It's not even a difficult thing for someone with your admittedly limited empathic abilities to imagine, you don't own a car so how hard would it be if you lived in an area with no local market and no access to mass transit? Maybe you're under the impression that they're strictly an urban phenomenon, well guess what, they aren't.

Food deserts are a real thing, dude, and they're in your backyard
Experts have declared roughly half of Detroit (pop. 916,000) a food desert and estimate that nearly 633,000 of Chicago's 3 million residents live in neighborhoods either lacking or far away from conventional supermarkets like Jewel, Pathmark and Winn-Dixie. The paucity of affordable, healthy food options in urban communities is ironic in a country with an abundance of food. "Everyone deserves to eat," says Mari Gallagher, president of the National Center for Public Research, a Chicago group that studies urban issues. The crisis, she adds, "really is a matter of life and death."

While I endorse the general concern, I will say that map is sort of wacky. For example, in the San Diego area that map lists as a "food desert" such locations as Miramar MCAS, Lindbergh Field, and Mission Bay Park. Military bases, airports, and recreational parks are not something I would frankly be worried about as far as a food desert problem.

The party is the firm’s big annual bash. Employees wear Halloween costumes to the office, where they party until around noon, and then return to work, still in costume. I can’t tell you how people dressed for this year’s party, but I can tell you about last year’s.
That’s because a former employee of Steven J. Baum recently sent me snapshots of last year’s party. In an e-mail, she said that she wanted me to see them because they showed an appalling lack of compassion toward the homeowners — invariably poor and down on their luck — that the Baum firm had brought foreclosure proceedings against.
When we spoke later, she added that the snapshots are an accurate representation of the firm’s mind-set. “There is this really cavalier attitude,” she said. “It doesn’t matter that people are going to lose their homes.” Nor does the firm try to help people get mortgage modifications; the pressure, always, is to foreclose. I told her I wanted to post the photos on The Times’s Web site so that readers could see them. She agreed, but asked to remain anonymous because she said she fears retaliation.
Some humans really suck.

Before the execution began, the chemicals administered to perform the execution unexpectedly solidified, clogging the IV tube administering the chemicals into Gacy's arm and complicating the execution procedure. Blinds covering the window through which witnesses observed the execution were drawn, and the execution team replaced the clogged tube to complete the procedure. After ten minutes, the blinds were reopened and the execution resumed. The entire procedure took a total of 18 minutes to complete

Occupy Oakland: Tents return as documentary filmmaker Michael Moore energizes protesters
[Link: www.mercurynews.com...]
Mayor Jean Quan Friday backed off her no-camping request to Occupy Oakland protesters, who seemed determined to ignore the edict anyway by covering Frank Ogawa Plaza with dozens of tents.
City Hall issued a list of guidelines, but the protesters seemed to be setting their own agenda. A Friday afternoon visit by documentary filmmaker Michael Moore to the plaza only strengthened their determination and defiance. Moore, in turn, credited Occupy Oakland for energizing the national movement.
People all over the country watched as police on Tuesday hurled tear gas and other projectiles at Oakland protesters, Moore said.
....
One camper, 19-year-old Jesse Orton, from Oregon, said he has no intention of leaving the plaza at night despite Quan's request."It is a free world," he said. "Why should they have power over me?"
He said he would not listen to the mayor, but that she could "come join us and smoke a bowl with us."

Is Quan schitzophrenic or something? If you're just going to wind up letting them camp there, why launch a confrontation where you kick them out in the first place?
It's possible that they're learning from their mistakes.
FTA:
Asked why campers were allowed to return, Quan said, the city is not exactly "letting" them camp again.
"We are asking them not to camp," she said, but quickly added that people were not being moved out because "closing down the camp would cause more violence."
The health issues that prompted the raid on the camp had not returned, she said.
and more importantly:
He asked the public to turn over video of incidents to police. Jordan also said the monitoring agreement connected to the Riders lawsuit "does not prevent us from using bean bags." The lawsuit stems from a police misconduct scandal in 2003.
Rubber bullets, however, Quan added, are not allowed. "One of the things we are looking at is, 'Did someone else bring them in, was there a disconnect?' "
They've moved from "we didn't do it!" to a solid "maybe" they were used. The one pic I saw of someone getting hit with a rubber bullet looked pretty conclusive to me.

Colorado Springs man in trouble after 2 dates arrive at same time
[Link: www.denverpost.com...]
A man was charged with false reporting when he called in a robbery to Colorado Springs police, after his girlfriend and a Craig's List acquaintance arrived at his apartment at the same time.
At 3:13 a.m., officers were called to the Village Seven four-plex at 4995 Picturesque Circle, on a report of a burglary in progress, according to the Colorado Springs Police Department's blotter.
Five officers arrived at the apartment, where 24-year-old Kevin Gaylor, a resident at the complex, reported the robbery.
Shortly after arriving, police learned of Gaylor's ruse.
A Denver woman, who had only just met Gaylor on Craig's List, was coming to visit Gaylor at his apartment when Gaylor's girlfriend unexpectedly arrived home.
When the woman arrived, Gaylor called police and reported the attempted robbery.

Harris County district attorney called to testify in DWI trial
[Link: www.chron.com...]
Misdemeanor DWI cases are so common in Houston's criminal courthouse that they seem to merit attention only when they involve a pro athlete, a law enforcement official or the daughter of a mayor.
One scheduled to continue on Friday may dwarf any others, with significant implications for an embattled Harris County District Attorney's Office.
A day after the revelation that her office is the target of a grand jury investigation, District Attorney Pat Lykos was called to testify Thursday in an ongoing DWI trial because she made public comments regarding the accuracy of results from the Houston Police Department's troubled mobile breath-testing vehicles.
"The reliability of the BAT vans has come into serious question by the chief prosecutor of Harris County herself," declared Jackie Carpenter, a defense attorney in the DWI trial. "If they're so unreliable, then why are you prosecuting someone with evidence you deem unreliable?"

City of Buena Park Settles Case of Man Allegedly Beaten By Police Officers
[Link: www.prweb.com...]
The City of Buena Park has settled a lawsuit alleging excessive force by three of its police officers at Knotts Berry Farm's Halloween Haunt Night 2010. The complaint alleged that the police officers filed false police reports and caused the District Attorney's Office to file charges against Mr. Love. Mr. Love was tried for resisting arrest and assault on the police officers. Mr. Love was acquitted on the criminal charges after a jury trial.
....
Mr. Love reached out his right hand to shake hands with Sgt. Lovchik and said “when I came, we showed respect right?” Mr. Love shook Sgt. Lovchik’s hand and gave him a “manly hug” by pulling him in close and giving Sgt. Lovchik two pats on the back with his other (left) hand while at the same time saying “all right peace”. Sgt. Lovchik pushed Mr. Love away and Mr. Love let go and started to walk towards the pedestrian tunnel. Some of the surrounding Police Officers on foot started to laugh about the “manly hug”.Mr. Love alleged in his federal complaint that OFFICER R. PLUMLEE while on a mounted police horse immediately rode up with his three (3) foot wooden saber in his right hand; he maneuvered his horse to pin Mr.Love against the chain link fence and then struck Mr. Love with the wooden saber at least two times on Mr.Love’s left shoulder and back. Mr. Love alleged that he immediately put his hands over his head to protect himself from the repeated blows of the wooden saber. The complaint further alleged that OFFICER PLUMLEE’s horse lost its footing and fell to the ground. After the horse fell, the complaint goes on to state that other Buena Park officers, including OFFICER T. REYES, allegedly jumped on Mr. Love and tackled Mr. Love from behind down onto the ground with one officer after another repeatedly beating Mr. Love.

Joan Rivers: ‘There Are No Gay Men in Zuccotti Park’
Joan Rivers hosted a book party at the 21 Club yesterday for Double Life: A Love Story from Broadway to Hollywood, by Alan Shayne and Norman Sunshine, which chronicles the 50-year relationship of a gay male couple. On that note, does Joan really think gay men dress better than straight ones? "Of course. Gay men have better bodies, on the whole. That’s number one, and number two: They care more about what they look like. Very seldom will you find a gay schlep. Am I right? Very few homeless." She continued, "This is why there are no gay protestors in Zuccotti Park. Because there’s no place to change, and no closets." So how does she feel about Occupy Wall Street, in general? "I think Occupy Wall Street was terrific the first week, and it has now turned into a very happy druggy party. I suggest they all get jobs and go back to work," she responded. "What was an amazing and wonderful thing, I now find just ridiculous. Everyone’s on drugs and everybody’s singing, and they now have a DVD out, and now they want to do a reality show." Any fashion advice for the protesters? "Wash, rinse, and repeat."

Sheriff demotes 5 Knox deputies over traffic stop [Link: www.knoxnews.com...]
Whatever the driver did to avoid a traffic ticket, the cameras didn't capture it.
Knox County Sheriff Jimmy "J.J." Jones says it was enough to cost five deputies their badges, guns, cruisers and police powers. The sheriff said he demoted the officers from patrol to corrections after they admitted to "improvising" a creative punishment for a 19-year-old driver stopped on suspicion of speeding Oct. 16.
....
The officers curse throughout the traffic stop and finally ask Phillips, who's off-camera, whether he's embarrassed. One deputy holds a baseball bat."Yes, sir, very embarrassed," Phillips said.
"Well, let me ask you a question," one of the officers said. "Do you want to be a little more embarrassed and get away with one speeding ticket, a couple miles over (the limit), or do you want to get three tickets. ... This officer's got a proposition for you. If you do it, and you do it good, this officer's only gonna give you one ticket for speeding."
The sound cuts out at that point and never resumes. The video shows the deputies gathered around laughing, one wiping his eyes, and the carload of teenagers driving away.

Speaking of teachers...
Lebanon, Ohio: A high school teacher was convicted Thursday of having sex with five students, some of them football players, after a judge rejected an insanity defense that argued the teens took advantage of her.
Stacy Schuler was sentenced to a total of four years in prison for the encounters with the Mason High School students at her home in Springboro in southwest Ohio in 2010. She can ask a judge to free her from prison after six months.
The 33-year-old Schuler, who could have faced decades in prison, cried as she was handcuffed and led out of the courtroom.
The five teens testified that Schuler, a health and gym teacher, had been drinking alcohol at the time of the encounters and was a willing participant who initiated much of the contact. The teens were about 17 at the time. The age of consent in Ohio is 16, but it's illegal for a teacher to have sex with a student.

Speaking of AGW...one denier is getting his ass handed to him.

Seriously, anybody who makes one of those lame jokes these days seriously needs to get their butt kicked, verbally at least. But I'd kind of prefer to do it literally. An obtuse or fanatical denier can simply DERP! their way around words spoken or on a screen, but if you physically kick them in the ass they might actually take notice.
Note: The section in italics is meant in jest and not to be taken as a call for actual violence.

I hope they lock this woman up for a long time. WTF is wrong with people? (This has nothing to do with the OWS protesters)
Woman charged with pimping teen recruited at Occupy NH rally
MANCHESTER - A city woman is accused of pimping a 16-year-old girl she met in Victory Park during the Occupy NH demonstrations.
Justina Jensen, 23, of 341 Hanover St., is charged with felony prostitution. Police allege Jensen met a teen at the local protest, which is an offshoot of Occupy Wall Street, and used the Internet to arrange a first liaison for the girl with a man who turned out to be an undercover police officer.
Police said the teen's mother called them Thursday about noon to say her daughter was missing and that her photograph had been posted on a website advertising adult party entertainment.
Court documents show the mother told police she and a friend had used the website to negotiate a deal for the friend to pay for sex with the teen.
Investigators looked at the website and found the girl's photo posted there, along with pictures of three other women, in an advertisement offering men to “come and have fun with four beautiful ladies” in Manchester.

City officials temporarily denied Occupy Madison a new street use permit Wednesday after protesters violated public health and safety conditions and failed to follow the correct processes to renew or amend a permit.
The permit, which expired Wednesday at noon, required Occupy Madison protesters to relocate from their current space at 30 West Mifflin Street, also called 30 on the Square.

I've been in a lot of drum circles...I've never seen anyone start masturbating. This sounds like bullshit to me. Probably just some girl gyrating to the rhythm that got a passing teabagger turned on so he called the police.
Van Driessen: "...And that's important, even today, as we wrestle with our manhood."
Butthead: "Beavis wrestles with his manhood"
Beavis: "Yeah, I usually win."

It's a prison, so those things can simply be confiscated. I might, however, let them keep the gear, with an "addition". This would be spyware, to allow the prison to have central monitoring of anything done with said computers, and to allow the prison to access any cell's camera at any time. I would also introduce a rule forbidding the cameras from being covered at any time. Subject to those controls, such systems might actually be a good thing. I'd rather a prison watch "Jersey Shore" than focus on his grudges and escape plan.

I hope they aren't threatening anyone like this guy did.
A protester, angered by the presence of a news crew inside Zuccotti Park Friday morning, threatened to stab Fox 5 News reporter John Huddy. Police arrested the protester.
What has been an otherwise violence-free period during his six weeks covering the Occupy Wall Street movement, took a turn for John Huddy. He explained what happened during Good Day New York.
"This is somebody I've come across several times for the last few days," Huddy said. "He threatened to stab me in the throat with a pen. He ripped the mic out of my hand."
"I have a meeting with Bloomberg," said the incoherent protester.

Nice that the reporter says that the six weeks he's been there were violence-free.
"I don't think this person represents the whole," Huddy said. "One of the media representatives asked me not to categorize this one person as representative of the whole group. Most of the folks I've dealt with have been accomodating. There is an element here that we've seen that has caused problems. Overall, it has been peaceful in the park."
Won't stop those who want to capitalize on the incident, of course.

The really stinky people:
In recent months, this small, isolated country has received national attention, with visits by U.S. Sen. Barbara Boxer and activist Erin Brockovich.
Earlier this year, dozens of residents, including teachers and schoolchildren, were sickened by noxious odors emanating from a four-story-high mesa of hazardous waste operated by Western Environmental Inc., a Utah-based soil recycling company that leases land from the Cabazon Band of Mission Indians.
The devil’s palette of stenches was overwhelming, residents say, shifting from gas fumes to the smell of burnt oil to ruptured sewer pipes. The symptoms of “Toxico Mecca,” as it became known locally, included nausea, vomiting, dizziness and difficulty breathing.

re: #620 Sergey Romanov
The main problem I have is that I was never against the right of Tea Partiers to convene, to protest, to demonstrate, to do whatever. I never blamed them for the crazies on their fringes. What I do hold against the Tea Party people was their actual complaints-- that taxes are too high, that government spending is too high, that socialism is running rampant, etc. etc. They demonstrated this not only through their actual speeches but their political organizing, the candidates that they supported.
The actual complaints of OWS have the benefit of being based in reality, for the most part. The one issue where I found them lacking-- the end the fed nonsense-- I've seen pushback and debate internally about.
The comparison between the two groups fails, for me, because one is based on protests against something fictional, and the other is based on protests against something real.
This is entirely beside any question of whether they'll 'achieve' anything. On that score, given the large number of ideological non-voters, I still feel doubtful.

My point was about language as well as "vibe", if you will, as was, I assume, Gus's, since he mentioned the "ROP" catchphrase. If somebody wants to diss "lefties" and "hippies" and even "moonbats" as a way to vent frustration, why not? Yeah, there are limits, and no, I can't define where they pass (though I would say they may be drawn when we stop talking about political groups, so "ROP" is off-base). My point was not to draw full equivalences between TP and OWS, and I myself have criticized such equivalences in the past.

re: #558 Sergey Romanov
Are you skeptical of OWS, btw? You've been missing throughout the debates that I've seen.
Yes and no. I'm horribly ignorant about the whole thing. I've done a fair amount of research into the whole financial collapse. Its complicated. Removing the firewall between investment banking and deposit holding institutions was insane. The amount of leveraging was beyond insane. AIG's London office was issuing billions of dollars worth of CDSs (essentially insurance) to anyone without needing to hold any capital themselves, assuming they'd never need to pay out in a million years. Things were deregulated or under-regulated to such a degree that essentially certain key players were able to booby trap the system. The credit rating agencies became an absolute joke.
Wallstreet did things that even if they were legal, were certainly unethical. The average American debt holder (read: everyone) became just another commodity.
On the other hand, turning debt into just another commodity, with an associate risk and ways to migrate that risk depending on your portfolio, etc allows in theory for more access to capital for more people wanting it. Of course, it also allows for the high finance version of torching a house for the insurance money. Except you don't need to live in the house or even own it. I think society via the government is well within its rights to say that you shouldn't be allowed to bet on someone defaulting on their mortgage. But there is pros and cons to restricting that.
Like I said, its complicated and people were allowed to do some very shady things. The bailout was needed but the lack of changes to regulation, or people really being held to account is horrible. At the same time, how does the government punish someone for committing an act that is only clearly wrong in hindsight? How do we avoid ex post facto laws? If the whole system is rotten, how do we fix it?
Don't even get me started on things like High Frequency trading.
So yeah, if OWS was outside Moody's and S&P I'd be right behind them. Or if they were protesting some of the institutionalized-perks to being an investment bank. The markets they have access to, the data networks, etc.
But I haven't seen that from OWS, at all. Maybe I'm not looking in the right places. But the online commentary at places like slashdot and reddit, and seen at Occupy Ottawa has ranged from:
0) Lacking a plan - If Obama showed up tomorrow, and said "you win", what would change? Get rid of the Fed? Free university? Nationalized banks?
1) Total naivety - "We need to get rid of the banks! everyone just use credit unions!"
2) Missing the point - Occupy Ottawa seems mostly concerned with student loans, the trans-canada pipeline and hating the Tories (read: hating the GOP). But don't point that out because its a bi-partisan movement and conservatives are totally welcome. Mmmhmmm.
3) Spooky calls for class warfare. The whole 1% thing has been taken way too far in the young, left wing groups I interact with. You don't know the 1%. They don't live in the same areas you do, they don't work with you, their kids go to seperate schools, they fly on private jets, its fine to hate them. Really, to do what they do, actively try to hurt and destroy the 99%, the 1% need to be sociopaths. + end the fed + anti-semitism occasionally.
From what I've read here, that's the fringe. And honestly, I didn't see that at occupy Ottawa. But just reading stuff like that on reddit and people I went to school with makes me extremely wary to say I support OWS.
Plus the fact that the OWS supporters I know in Canada also tend to be anti-military, Gadaffi apologists. That's a turn off too, but probably more personal.

A sadly realistic, although somewhat pointless, precaution. (Last I checked in on them they had a thread dedicated to claiming Freetoken had called for a one world government. This was based on his statement that he thought some problem or other could only be solved through 'something no one wants, a world government'. I guess they think Free is nobody.)

And we start to see more false accusations against these events. Since the critics can't hardly find anything serious we get stuff that is just all made up. Or we get minor violations like "disruptive behavior" or minor vandalism suddenly treated like a major public menace. I think that is the fate of an unmoving target like an Occupy event in a major public area.
When we get far more trouble out of a May Day or Immigration march, it's called "relatively peaceful".

The Night Occupy Los Angeles Tore Itself In Two
[Link: www.theawl.com...]
Occupy LA’s decision-making body, the General Assembly, has been responsible for conducting the encampment’s business. As in most other cities, the participating members handle everything from ensuring the nightly meeting take place to doing financial research on Los Angeles-based bankers to cleaning up the trash. But on Wednesday, a large group of dissenters decided to occupy the General Assembly’s usual outdoor meeting space and assert themselves as the new regime. One man, standing at the center of the swirling and increasingly unruly crowd, yelled into a megaphone, “You don’t represent us anymore! We’re taking over! We’re the People’s Forum!” Rumblings of dissent and palpable animosity had been mounting in the camp throughout the afternoon. Informal meetings were held around the clock to hotly debate an issue that had factionalized the camp: weed.
....
Drug use has been a key conservative talking point used to undermine the various Occupy camps around the country. In Occupy Los Angeles, though, smoking weed has become a wedge issue dividing the camp into increasingly entrenched groups.
....
About sixty people were in attendance for the afternoon meeting. Most were young, many were Chicano, there were some purposefully well-dressed young white guys in collared shirts and ironed pants who were not camping but regularly attending meetings. There were a few older people in the group with the vibe of being life-long professional activists. About six men donned the traditional anarchist garb: pulled-up hoodie, black bandana around their face, an implacable look in their eyes.“I don’t understand why people who want to smoke weed can’t just go across the street to do it?” one young man in camouflage shorts and black sweatshirt said. About half the group raised their hands up and twinkled their fingers in agreement.

An action like that is not just about fees. That is just the proverbial straw that broke the camels back. A public "retail" action writ large has an impact on an entity like a bank. It's one concrete step, in a place that should have more I admit.

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) — Tennessee state troopers for the second straight night arrested more than two dozen Wall Street protesters for defying a new nighttime curfew imposed by the state's Republican governor in an effort to disband an encampment near the Capitol.

It isn't the moving of money that bothers me, it's the attempt to get everybody to do it at the same time to orchestrate a crisis that I have an issue with. If they succeed (which is unlikely) the bank will just go to the Fed for emergency funds to make sure they stay capitalized enough to still function. We'll end up paying for it. When deposits move from one entity to another, the second entity picks up the "energy" or deposits it needs to grow. Loan, hire, manage the new monies. The bank that no longer has those monies now has a competitive motive to make policies more consumer friendly. If credit unions and local banks get the funds they get some advantage. How is that so bad?!
Remember it is Bank Transfer Day not withdraw and bury the cash under your tent day. (Hmm I hope that reads as a lighter note not a snarky slap) :-)

Navy commander sentenced in sexual assault of two sailors
A Navy commander Friday was sentenced to 3 1/2 years in prison after pleading guilty to sexually assaulting two female sailors while he was the captain of the guided-missile destroyer Momsen.
Cmdr. Jay Wylie was also sentenced to be dismissed from the Navy, under a plea bargain with military prosecutors. Wylie was relieved of command of the Everett, Wash.-based ship in April when the allegations surfaced.
Wylie, 40, a 19-year veteran of the Navy, pleaded guilty to rape, aggravated sexual assault, abusive sexual content and conduct unbecoming an officer...

Woman guilty of trying to burn husband to death during nap
[Link: news.yahoo.com...]
A Florida woman was convicted of trying to murder her husband by setting the couple's bedroom on fire while he napped, in one of two suspected attempts to kill him, authorities said on Saturday.
.....
Prosecutors said Kimberly Boone, a college financial aid manager from Winter Springs, Florida, set the couple's bedroom on fire in December 2008 while Robert Boone slept. She drugged her husband with the anti-anxiety medication Xanax, making it harder for him to escape the fire, they said.
....
She was not arrested for the arson and attempted murder until four months later, in April 2009, when Robert Boone was shot in the chest while checking on his wife's concern about noises in the garage.Robert Boone, who survived both incidents, told investigators Kimberly brought their Ruger .357 into the garage. Kimberly told investigators Robert had the handgun.
Kimberly Boone was acquitted of attempted murder in the shooting case at her first trial in 2010.

Yup, we agree on that. Goldman-Sachs and others appeared to have the Midas touch, able turn debt into cash. Turns out they were just really good at turning debt into management fees and bonuses.
It's a long chain of conflicts of interests that will get unraveled some day, maybe when the public learns some essential lessons, e.g. about the difference between assets and liabilities, the creation of money through credit contracts, and why the lack of own capital/equity for lenders or collateral for borrowers always introduces toxicity into the resulting debt.
I am sure it won't end with the big banks or the hedge funds, though. The lack of prosecution to this day AFAIK is more indicative of incriminated government officials and/or institutions than of actual legality of the practices involved. This, I believe, points to another lesson which is probably better understood already: That the privatization of big profits together with the socialization of losses is a giant scam that leaves the public in general much worse off.

I've seen that. I think it's a bad idea to orchestrate a bank run. If people want to move their money that's fine by me but trying to cause an economic crisis by everybody moving their money at the same time is not something I'd support. I don't think they'll actually succeed but the effort is a bad idea.
They won't succeed. They tried something similar with PayPal before and failed. They usually do not realize that actual support in the public for their actions is much smaller than the internet hype they admittedly are masters at generating. Kinda like Paulbots.
Matt Taibbi seems to disagree with your assessment of bank runs (like this) being a bad idea, btw:
Another Weapon for OWS: Pull Your Money Out of BofA
Incidentally, this kind of suggestion might prove a real help to OWS. One definite tactic that Occupy Wall Street can adopt, going forward, is educating people about the perfidy of certain financial institutions and convincing people to do what they did back in the days of apartheid, which is disinvest. If everyone were to start pulling their money out of the worst-offending banks, that would have a profound effect on the markets and may function as a great short-cut to political change.
Bank of America is a great place to start. All the TBTF banks suck equally, but as George Orwell would say, some banks are more equal than others. Withdrawals would be a great way for people to answer the Fed's decision to put depositors on the hook for Merrill Lynch's bad bets.

That does not look like much of a risk. But let's revisit on the 6th. I still suggest that moving to local banks is a good idea at this time. The money is till in the economy just the same. Just not there to support mega banks quite as much.

Foreclosure firm's Halloween party features "homeless" costumes
...A third photograph shows a corner of Baum’s office decorated to look like a row of foreclosed homes. Another shows a sign that reads, “Baum Estates” — needless to say, it’s also full of foreclosed houses. Most of the other pictures show either mock homeless camps or mock foreclosure signs — or both.
....
MFY Legal Services, which defends homeowners, and Harwood Feffer, a large class-action firm, have filed a class-action suit claiming that Steven J. Baum has consistently failed to file certain papers that are necessary to allow for a state-mandated settlement conference that can lead to a modification. Judge Arthur Schack of the State Supreme Court in Brooklyn once described Baum’s foreclosure filings as “operating in a parallel mortgage universe, unrelated to the real universe.”

Well, I'm Canadian, keep that in mind. Our banks were denied deregulation and mergers, so I'm pretty happy with that. Maybe they do have too much influence, they were bailed out for around $150 billion.
Overall, I pay no fees. I have access to my money from anywhere. My accounts are insured to $100k or something stupid. I have access to a credit card, debit card, atms. Free cheques. Various options for my RRSP (401k I guess?) and TFSA (Roth IRA maybe?). I can pick between various high risk high reward products, right down to 0 risk with returns probably under inflation. I like that my company has access to various forms of credit so it can afford to invest in its future instead of just sitting on mountains of cash. I like that our customers can fiance the massive infrastructure projects that allow both them and us to profit.

OWS seems to be what the Tea Party only pretended to be: non-partisan, though mostly due to perceived lack of meaningful choices and a sense of despair about the political process and system in general. Of course that will elicit attacks from all partisan places. The problem with OWS is getting the movement to engage in politically activities that are meaningful beyond just awareness and attention. The Tea Party was/is hyper partisan, but they had an essential role in actually molding and shaping an entire major political party.

re: #691 Rightwingconspirator
If they just run to smaller banks and credit unions there is really no harm. And I think we both understand it will not be big enough to have a major economic impact. It might be big enough to get BofA to sweeten up some policies. For every dollar withdrawn, they lose the ability to loan many dollars. Which is all kinds of odd anyway.
One thing that I noticed listening to the news in the truck the other day - BoA caught so much shit for announcing those ATM fees, it scared all the other banks off of even trying it.
Despite claims that OWS is not affecting the banks, they are paying attention. They might not be scared out of their skin or anything, but let's say for argument's sake that 10,000 or 20,000 people move their accounts on 11/5.
That's probably no big deal in terms of the money involved, but it'll make the news and people will hear about it.
And the banks will pay more attention.
I'm moving my business account out of Citibank on 11/5. And they will try to incentivize me not to. I'm moving my money anyway.

So far partisans outnumber indies like me.
So Far. 2012 beckons.

Having once been a BofA customer, I simply encourage folks to think of the hours of waiting for "customer service" on such a busy day...
I had a BoA account many moons ago and closed it after they got busted selling their customer's personal information to marketing firms. I have a Wells Fargo account for convenience but I'm not that happy with a bunch of their practices. I have a Charles Schwab account that I'm very happy with and will eventually move all my money into it.

I had forgotten you are Canadian. You guys pretty much avoided the whole mess huh? In a modern financial market. If we examine the differences between US baking policies and Canada perhaps we will see where we went wrong.
I know our current PM has done a few sessions with American officials over the differences, and I'm sure it happens at lower levels too. I think you'll see there are many reasons, including plain old luck.
On the other hand, I really don't know how bad it got/is for the average person in the states. So that colors my opinion on the whole thing strongly.

Crap.
My son-in-law just got word yesterday he's being deployed to Afghanistan in a few weeks. He just got back from Djibouti.
It's time to get the hell out of there. It's been time for years, but now that Osama's dead, we're done with everything we set out to do. The Bush administration hand-picked the leaders of Afghanistan and Iraq, and now we see their man in Iraq is actually Iran's man, and Karzai just announced to the world that he's Pakistan's man instead of ours.
Fine. So bring our people home and wash our hands of the whole mess. If they want to blow each other up and treat their girls and women like trash (Afghanistan) and want to blow up energy infrastructure and schools (both places), well, it's not our problem. And our military people are being killed, maimed, and run ragged.
There was an article on CNN last night about an army ranger who was killed on his FOURTEENTH deployment. He had deployed FOURTEEN times over the last 9 years.
Insanity.

Yep. "Indict us and you'll scare off all the 'talent' that makes us successful!" It's a bunch of horseshit, a call essentially for blanket immunity for any actions that damage the economy, simply out of fear jailing those responsible will have even more dire economic consequences.

I have an investment acct at SmithBarney - but for everything else, I use a credit union and have for 30 years. I've never been disappointed with my credit union. I'm not sure why most folks don't just use a credit union instead of banks that, to me, seem OBVIOUSLY to want to deal with accounts that involve large amounts of money (commercial accounts), rather than the nickel-and-dime stuff most people have.

Yep. Citi is going to start charging 3 bucks per check or transaction if your small business account balance dips below 6 grand. My small business is very small (one-man shop), and quite often my balance goes below $6K.
I've been with Citi since I started my business 13 years ago and they were still EAB. I'm not going to stick around and let them siphon money out of my account in return for the privilege of doing business with their bank.
They're supposed to be working for me, not the other way round.

Sure, I hate what individual companies and people did, but from where I'm sitting it just doesn't make sense for me to say 'I hate modern financial markets', which is where I feel OWS is.
