Herman Cain Accused of ‘Sexually Suggestive Behavior’

A Herman Cain scandal erupts, just in time for the beginning of the weekly news cycle: Exclusive: Two women accused Herman Cain of inappropriate behavior.

During Herman Cain’s tenure as the head of the National Restaurant Association in the 1990s, at least two female employees complained to colleagues and senior association officials about inappropriate behavior by Cain, ultimately leaving their jobs at the trade group, multiple sources confirm to POLITICO.

The women complained of sexually suggestive behavior by Cain that made them angry and uncomfortable, the sources said, and they signed agreements with the restaurant group that gave them financial payouts to leave the association. The agreements also included language that bars the women from talking about their departures. …

The latest statement came from Cain himself. In a tense sidewalk encounter Sunday morning outside the Washington bureau of CBS News — where the Republican contender had just completed an interview on “Face the Nation” — Cain evaded a series of questions about sexual harassment allegations.

Cain said he has “had thousands of people working for me” at different businesses over the years and could not comment “until I see some facts or some concrete evidence.” His campaign staff was given the name of one woman who complained last week, and it was repeated to Cain on Sunday. He responded, “I am not going to comment on that.”

He was then asked, “Have you ever been accused, sir, in your life of harassment by a woman?”

Cain spokesman J.D. Gordon said the political press was “dredging up thinly sourced allegations” from Cain’s tenure leading the trade group in the 1990s. Gordon said the report includes “unsubstantiated personal attacks” and said the press is “casting aspersions on his character and spreading rumors that never stood up to the facts.”

Asked if Cain’s campaign was denying the report, Gordon said, “Yes.”

Stuff like this can bite you can you in the ass, as it most certainly should. If you have to resort to, or can't contain yourself from doing creepy, overly suggestive, or downright illegal harassment there is something legitimately wrong with you. And if such is the case, you do NOT belong in public office. There may be hope for you to change your life around, but you automatically bar yourself from serving the public and IMO having to have other people rely on you in most capacities, because your trust is tarnished forever.

Acknowledging his past behavior and apologizing for it now would pretty much deflate the story, as opposed to refusing to comment or trying to shrug it off by calling it "old news."

For those who missed out on last years expose by Clarence Thomas' ex-girlfriend and think Anita Hill's story is a total fabrication:

McEwen, a former prosecutor and administrative law judge who has written her own memoir and is seeking a publisher, said she believed Hill's account of sexually suggestive statements by Thomas because of his use of pornography.

"I suppose I would call it a fetish or a hobby," she said of Thomas. "It was something that was very important to him, something that he talked about."

She said the pornography bored her and she wouldn't watch pornographic videos with him, but she also said she enabled his fantasies tied to the pornography "because we had a sexual relationship."

"I didn't disapprove of it. I just didn't care," McEwen said.

According to McEwen, Thomas underwent a major personality change when he gave up alcohol that eventually caused her to leave the relationship.

"Clarence became not the person I knew when I first met him," she said, adding that he "drank to excess" when they first met and might have been a "raving alcoholic" at that time. When he gave up alcohol, she said, he became "angry, short-tempered, asexual" and obsessive with ambition and what she called "weird things," such as long runs in the dark before dawn.

Cain is someone with a long record, of more than the average successes but also it is clear that he's not really into governance and leading in a social setting. His successes come from being a good manager and being able to persevere.

So yes, when it comes to this "politics" thing he is an amateur - before now all of his politics were of the small group, insider kind, being able to maneuver in board rooms and among the monied. Now he has to face the rest of the world, and it's a different kind of thing.

I suspect he can slough off this scandal, unless there is more hiding in closed files.

That's my bigger issue with all this. Only time will tell what will happen with these allegations against Cain. I'm more than fine with letting the GOP primary clown show go on for as long as possible.

That way, if we're doing research or something we don't have to keep the edit window open and possibly lose existing work by inadvertently closing it, navigating away from it, or temporarily losing our connection (all three things have happened to me before). Just a thought as I don't know how much work that would require on your end.

Rather than think, "Hey, this guy's another skirt chasing prick," it'll be, "Here's another stellar patriot being taken down by uppity women pretending to be victims for profit."

Thanks :) For the questions where I didn't initially know the answer, I used process of elimination plus educated guess (for example, the FDR/Supreme Court one - "impeaching the judges" was way too extreme, I wasn't sure if a super-majority in both houses of Congress could "override" the court, so I went with what seemed to be the simplest, most straightforward, most doable answer - appoint more judges that supported his views. A presidential "tradition" that carries on to this day!)

Sorry to hear about your pop. Pine Ridge is on Silverado just about even with Yountville. We took Oak Knoll Ave across, so never made it to Yountville. My wife's cousin was visiting, so we took him and his new wife up and got some special treatment for them via her wine distributors (cave tours, tasting from the barrels, etc.)...not just the stand at the counter tastings that people have to pay for. Though I did buy some nice 80 dollar cab and join the Pine Ridge wine club.

But you know..Taking the Tram up to Sterling winery to look over the whole Valley is a stunning view..Even if their wine kind of sucks...They are kind of like the McDonalds of Wines in Napa...But the winery is outstanding and worth the trip..

Who decides how many Justices are on the Court? Have there always been nine?
The Constitution places the power to determine the number of Justices in the hands of Congress. The first Judiciary Act, passed in 1789, set the number of Justices at six, one Chief Justice and five Associates. Over the years Congress has passed various acts to change this number, fluctuating from a low of five to a high of ten. The Judiciary Act of 1869 fixed the number of Justices at nine and no subsequent change to the number of Justices has occurred.

I was at a Winery eating lunch when I asked our waiter if I could get a martini. (My GF and I were wined out). The owner of the Winery over heard me and came to our table. He asked if I said what he thought I said. Sheepishly I said yes. So he said he loved that idea and said he will come back to our table with the address of his favorite restaurant in town where he gets his martinis. He was a real old timer.... and true to his word, he came back, shared the location, and went on his way. The place not only had great martinis, but as you walked in the door, you were greeted with the view of prime beef, aging in their fridge.

I've always wondered what compulsory voting would do. I have no desire to see it actually put in place, but it might be interesting to see what would happen if everyone of legal age was required to vote. How would that change our political climate?

The key is, as with everything, in the penalty. Where are the lines between trivial/non-trivial/intolerable? Does a $20 fine suffice? Loss of driving privileges until the next election? Etc. As with an anti-filibuster amendment, it's probably far more entertaining in theory than the nightmare it would be in reality...

Oh, absolutely. I have NO desire to open that can of worms in real life. EVER. It would be a complete nightmare.

Still, as an academic exercise, it's interesting. Sort of like imagining what things would be like if we had a true multi-party system in this country instead of just the two major parties we have now. Fun to think about in theory, but completely unrealistic otherwise.

So on the Fatal Fifth, Chicagoland Game Dice Dojo will see Khan Stanislov N'Buta and the Addar Command Keshik face off against the Society's Dark Caste minions and Clan Burrock on Nouveaux Paris in 3073. The iATM and Nova CWS will be used, and given the power Adders will field (to include N'Buta's Night Gyr F, a Dire Wolf H, and a Stone Rhino 2, the bad guys will need 'em. Full Force Lists to follow soon, but if anyone has a favorite unit they'd like to see just PM me and I'll see if it can be worked in.

The long dinner table, under the direction of dear friends, was absolutely stunningly beautiful. The music was superb. The stars were bright and life was really good. And then, for a few moments, it felt like the rug was pulled out from underneath us and my wonderful world came crashing down. As guests were mingling, finishing tours of the farm, and while the first course of the meal was being prepared and ready to be sent out, a Southern Nevada Health District employee came for an inspection.

Susan deemed our food unfit for consumption and demanded that we call off the event because:

4. Even the vegetables prepared in advance had to be thrown out because they were cut and were then considered a “bio-hazard”.

5. We did not have receipts for our food. (Reminder! This food came from farms not from the supermarket! I have talked with several chefs who have said that in all their years cooking they have never been asked for receipts.)

I then asked if we couldn’t feed the food to our “public guests” or even to our private family, then at least let us feed it to our pigs. (I think it should be a criminal action to waste any resource of the land. Being dedicated to our organic farm, we are forever looking for good inputs into our compost and soil and good food that can be fed to our animals. The animals and compost pile always get our left over garden surplus and food. We truly are trying to be as sustainable as possible.)

Again, a call to Susan and another negative response.

So the food that was raised here on our farm and selected and gathered from familiar local sources, cooked and prepared with skill and love was even unfit to feed to my pigs!?!

Many happy football fans about. Eagles beat the hated Cowboys, and since the Steelers and Ravens won as well the smaller fan contingents are in a celebratory mood as well. The Brazilians... well they're just unhappy that it is so "cold".

Philly dodged the snow over the weekend and just got rain. Friends up in northern NJ got 10+" of heavy wet snow with the accompanying downed wires and tree branches. (I was driving in the southern edge of that on Saturday night - not much fun.)

Thankfully, I'm a salaried consultant, so my income is reliable. Which is what I need for my particular lot in life right now. In addition, the client to whom I have been contracted has been extremely pleased with my quality of work, to the point where they're having internal fights over whose project gets to use me next. This, unfortunately, is also the underlying source of the bureaucratic mess that has caused the delay in getting me additional work, which has left me more or less bored (depending on how many bug reports I'm given to fix on any particular day).

Once in a while, it can be satisfying, especially if the work is worth it. I'm with you; when I got laid off, I enjoyed the rest and relaxation for about two days, but by the weekend, I was going stir-crazy. The recruiters all thought I was nuts for charging right out and going job hunting, but I don't think they understood how much it would've killed me to sit on my butt for even a week.

Knew him as a teenager. He was a tiny kid then, grew into a 6'7" giant. Found him a few years ago at a gathering. We didn't talk much then but hooked up on FB a year or so ago.

This guy actually drove to Wisconsin from Richmond, VA to get in on the protests there against Walker.

He's all up in the OWS thing.

I'm wondering if he's going to go to California when Jerry Brown has to change the benefit situation there. They got former fire chiefs receiving 17,000.00 a month in retirement income.

Pretty weak in my opinion since it was "fish in a barrel" type shooting.

Given the country's racial history about "one drop" purity regarding "black-ness" trying to reverse argue to make Obama "not black" is ludicrous. And then to goalpost move and attempt to sub-divide blacks into "former slave" blacks (which are "legitimate" given Cain is one) and "non former slave" blacks as categories is equally ludicrous.

Not to mention that trying to separate politicians and such along racial lines is pretty stupid in any case. It's avoiding the important things like policy - which is what is going to affect me, not their skin color.

I'm not a terribly big fan of pumpkin seeds, but when my mom roasted some with cinnamon and brown sugar, even I had to admit that they were amazing.

I just can't get past the gritty texture. I had some with salt and garlic, and the flavor was okay, but I just couldn't get the grit out of my mouth.

Sounds tasty!!

A pretty flexible and easy recipe assuming you can get a whole pumpkin or squash to serve as the cooking vessel. And you get a very nice presentation bringing a roasted orange colored orb to the table and then cutting and serving it*.

* - I presume someone going for real Halloween-like effect could somehow disguise it as a skull since you're cutting skull slices and then scooping out "brains" to serve with it. :)

Then you can rough chop them and add them to flour, coat a piece of fish with the nut/flour and saute it. I've done that with pecans, almonds and macadamia nuts.

Kids go out gathering candy, jack-o-lanterns, etc. They don't do trick or treating in the apartment building I live in so I pretty much have a free evening, or can go to a party. (Though most of those were this weekend to facilitate the adults cutting loose a bit.)

That's right, I missed that last night.

There's basically three cooking shows I follow on/off and generally ignoring the rest:
Iron Chef - varies in quality. You can get some real good competitions, and some real interesting special ingredients. But the cooking level, techniques, and equipment are generally over my head. I rarely cook for groups and don't have a lot of room to do cooking in.

Good Eats - Alton Brown is a cooking education. I learn a lot about ingredients, preparation, and some interesting food items to try eating and/or cooking.

Chopped - Another competition show, but one that purposefully tosses weird ingredient combinations at competitors. These vary in quality like Iron Chef does. And I dislike the personalities of some of the judges a great deal. (I think one is on the Iron Chef - Superstars mentioned above). Like Iron Chef this one doesn't really lend itself to improving my cooking education.

Ann Coulter was already on to defend the latter theory, maqintaining that the left hates "strong black men", but others see this as an attempt from within the GOP to derail Cain because he is perceived as unelectable.

I read an interview with Jerry Springer once where he said they kept a wardrobe filled with clothes he (and his crew) no longer need, so the guests could pick out something they could actually be shown on TV in, since they often came trying to show off their best assets and they always got to keep the clothes after the show. It was kind of sad...most of the people on those shows are so poor and uneducated they have no clue they're being made fools of for corporate profit.

Off the top of the head, KT took the police's side in the more than obvious macing incident as well as accused the woman in the "horses in the crowd" video of lying about being hit by the police baton. The cops being indicted?

As reported in the New York Times last week, 16 officers - many of them "white shirts" were formally charged (arraigned) in New York State Supreme Court in the Bronx with various crimes ranging from "fixing" tickets for friends and relatives all the way up to selling drugs, attempted robbery, attempted grand larceny, and other felonies. The Bronx district attorney says that the value of the tickets that were fixed total to somewhere between $1 million and $2 million US dollars.

It doesn't bother me one way or the other. This doesn't justify protesters attacking police.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. A few million people are still without power in the metro area (the utilities cite customers - but a customer could be an entire apartment building in some cases). NJ has about 350k customers without power; CT has 700k+; NY has around 100k.

Guess the questions about whether power lines should be buried or maintained on overhead poles will come up again, but unless folks are willing to cough up the money to make it happen (or put up with even more extended outages when flooding occurs) don't expect any changes to power distribution policies - though tree trimming has to be a bigger part of the utilities' budgets than it is to date.

Oh, and Herman Cain deflected questions about the alleged harassment claims, claiming he'd take the arrows later after speaking at the AEI gathering.

“I’ll take all of the arrows later,” Mr. Cain said, smiling during an appearance at the American Enterprise Institute, a conservative research organization, where a moderator urged the audience to keep questions focused on fiscal policy. When pressed by a reporter, he said, “I’m going by the ground rules that my host has set.”

His campaign manager, Mark Block, emphatically denied the allegation, contained in a Politico report, that Mr. Cain sexually harassed women during his tenure at the National Restaurant Association. Mr. Block did not answer a question about whether there had been a financial payment to women who worked with Mr. Cain.

You can see rats all the time in most parks. Rats are cool. They live wherever humans do. There's one little guy that lives down at Tompkins square park that I say hello to often; he's got a pink scar on the side of his face so he's easy to recognize. I call him Mr. Bingles.

Absolutely. But when you have mature trees along a power line right of way that aren't trimmed and could topple onto the lines - something is seriously wrong.

I love seeing mature trees along roads as I drive, but if they're not maintained, they can drop limbs, take out cars or power lines.

We're going to have spend more to upgrade the lines to bury them in some spots - but keep them above ground in flood prone areas. Have to balance the different disaster probabilities. We have far too many wind events around us to keep dealing with power outages, but closer to the Passaic River, putting those lines underground would be even more costly - and lengthen the outages considerably.

There was a white rat who lived near the Fillmore Center back in San Francisco that I saw a lot. I couldn't tell if he was a natural albino or an escaped pet rat.

I used to have a pet rat. They're so much better than any other rodent pet- they're actually smart, they're very sociable, and if you're playing with them, they get off you to go to the bathroom rather than widdling all over you like mice, gerbils, and hamsters.

Some of the news reports yesterday were reporting that the NYPD was actually enticing homeless and junkies to come down to Zuccotti Park - to add to the misery of the protesters already there. I don't quite believe those reports, but word of mouth and anyone reading the news would see that the people in Zuccotti Park aren't being harassed from spaces there as they would if they were out on the streets in other parts of the city. Word of mouth has probably sent homeless people from other parts of the city to come to Zuccotti for handouts - including free food that the protesters have been putting together - and a place to crash with a wink and nod from the cops.

Once I was walking on the West side of Dolores Park and then out of the blue someone flung this huge rat out their apartment window which landed several feet away from me. Damn thing was big. Feaky.

I did not investigate further to determine the social-status (i.e. hippie, yuppie, etc.) of the flinger. However, the flingie was clearly a rat. A big one. ;)

(Reuters) - A white supremacist couple suspected of committing four murders across the Pacific Northwest on their way to "kill more Jews" in Sacramento were ordered held in California on Tuesday until extradited to Washington state.

The couple, David Joseph Pedersen, 31, and Holly Grigsby, 24, were arrested last Wednesday in Northern California, capping what authorities said was a two-week, three-state crime spree that began in the Puget Sound city of Everett, Washington.

Both face charges of aggravated first-degree murder in Washington state over the stabbing death of Pedersen's 69-year-old stepmother and the shooting death of his father, aged 56. Both were slain last month.

Appearing together in Yuba County Court in Marysville, California, on Tuesday, the pair waived their right to challenge extradition to Washington to face the charges...

Police responded to a spate of gang shootings over the weekend, one of them fatal – the latest uptick in an increasingly violent year of gang-related crime in Portland.

With 85 gang-related shootings, stabbings and serious assaults to date this year to date – and with two more months to go until New Year's – Portland is on track to exceed the 95 gang-related crimes in 2010.

Between January and October this year, the city logged 19 homicides, six of them, or 31 percent, gang-related. That's the highest rate in a decade, according to police statistics. The lowest percentage of gang homicides, zero, came in 2005. Previously, the highest rate was 28 percent in 2000, when five out of 18 homicides were considered to be related to gang activity...

For all its social snootiness, Wall Street has suffered far more from the meddling of members of its own class than from intrusions by those outside it. It was Franklin D. Roosevelt, an aristocrat, who held the lords of finance responsible for the Great Depression—securing legislation to establish the Securities and Exchange Commission, asserting federal authority over the stock exchange, and appointing a wealthy stock trader, Joseph Kennedy Sr., to ride herd. Not much better, from Wall Street’s perspective, was FDR’s Cousin Teddy, who as President prosecuted trusts as illegal monopolies. Or Louis Brandeis, a Harvard-trained corporate attorney turned crusader against the concentration of wealth and power.

These men changed the system from within, as have the ablest regulators in recent times. Arthur Levitt Jr., a vigorous SEC chairman under President Bill Clinton, was first the president of Shearson Hayden Stone. (Levitt is a member of the board of Bloomberg L.P., owner of Bloomberg Businessweek.) Paul A. Volcker cut his teeth at Chase Manhattan before running the Federal Reserve and becoming the gruff animating voice behind the Volcker Rule, which bans commercial banks from engaging in proprietary trading. It’s hard to imagine any of these “opponents” of Wall Street mounting a barricade. They didn’t need to storm the castle to know where the secrets were hidden.

In its very amateurism, Occupy Wall Street represents something new. Although it’s attracted some celebrities and well-heeled supporters, participants come chiefly from outside Wall Street. Many are unemployed or poorly employed. These are not bankers or reform-minded professors; these are also-rans in the capitalist race, upset with the system itself. Their chief weapon is neither eloquence nor argument, but their physical presence.

As critics have noted, the protesters are not in complete agreement with each other, but the overall message is reasonably coherent. They want more and better jobs, more equal distribution of income, less profit (or no profit) for banks, lower compensation for bankers, and more strictures on banks with regard to negotiating consumer services such as mortgages and debit cards. They also want to reduce the influence that corporations—financial firms in particular—wield in politics, and they want a more populist set of government priorities: bailouts for student debtors and mortgage holders, not just for banks.

In its grassroots and leftist character, Occupy Wall Street bears a superficial resemblance to protests from the ’60s and early ’70s. But the Woodstock Era was different in ways that tell us important things about the current siege. Then, radical students preached an affinity with the “working class,” but it was rare that the students and any members of the working class actually joined arms.

What if you could abstain from the vote, but were still legally obligated to enter a vote? You'd have to sign up, send in a ballot or go to your polling place, but you could simply vote for "not these candidates".

Let us all remember - OWS is not a movement or a party: it is a bunch of people out protesting. At least most of them are protesting, some are there for other reasons.

And the things they are protesting and the solutions they propose are all varied.

I agree with protestors who are in favor of tighter regulation of financial practices and restrictions on annonymous corporate donations to political candidates and PACs.

I do not go for the "smash capitalism/nationalize the banks" crowd.

But that is the thing about OWS: it is all individuals. Any attempt to generalize other than the fac that they are all out in the same place is all but inapplicable.

Hard Hat Riot - 1970/NYC

The Hard Hat Riot occurred on May 8, 1970 in Lower Manhattan. The riot started about noon when about 200 construction workers mobilized by the New York State AFL-CIO attacked about 1,000 high school and college students and others protesting the Kent State shootings, the American invasion of Cambodia and the Vietnam War near the intersection of Wall Street and Broad Street. The riot, which spread to New York City Hall, lasted little more than two hours. More than 70 people were injured, including four policemen. Six people were arrested.

Background

On May 4, 1970, thirteen students were shot, four fatally, at Kent State University in Ohio during a protest of the Vietnam War and the incursion into Cambodia. As a show of sympathy for the dead students, then-Republican Mayor John Lindsay ordered all flags at City Hall to be flown at half-staff the same day.

The American labor movement was deeply divided over support for President Richard Nixon's Vietnam policies. AFL-CIO President George Meany and most labor leaders in the United States were vehemently anti-communist and strongly supported American military involvement in Southeast Asia. But by 1970, union members were divided in their support for the war.

One of the strongest supporters of the president's war policy was Peter J. Brennan. Brennan was president of the Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York, an alliance of building and construction unions in the New York City area. He was also president of the Building and Construction Trades Council of New York, the statewide umbrella group for construction unions. Additionally, he served as the vice president of the New York City Central Labor Council and the New York State AFL-CIO, umbrella groups for all labor unions in these respective areas. Brennan was a registered Democrat who had lobbied strongly for Democrats through the 50's and 60's, but increasingly supported Republican candidates as support for skilled labour unions decreased.[3] The building and construction unions were overwhelmingly blue-collar and male, and large majorities of these union members supported Nixon's Vietnam policy.

Shortly after the Kent State shootings, anti-war protesters announced they would hold a rally near City Hall to memorialize the four dead students. Brennan decided to organize a counter-rally of construction workers to show support for the Nixon administration...

Pretty weak in my opinion since it was "fish in a barrel" type shooting.

Given the country's racial history about "one drop" purity regarding "black-ness" trying to reverse argue to make Obama "not black" is ludicrous. And then to goalpost move and attempt to sub-divide blacks into "former slave" blacks (which are "legitimate" given Cain is one) and "non former slave" blacks as categories is equally ludicrous.

Not to mention that trying to separate politicians and such along racial lines is pretty stupid in any case. It's avoiding the important things like policy - which is what is going to affect me, not their skin color.

As I said, on some core level, I do think that it will be another milestone in our long, bloody, weary process of getting to a better place when a person of American slave ancestry is POTUS.

This does not mean that:

1. Obama's not black.
2. Obama's having a white mother makes him not black.
3. Obama's being raised by white people makes him not black.
4. I'm going to vote for Herman Cain just to move us along a little faster.
5. I'm buying this sudden concern for having a truly representative black man be president.

The construction trades are split over the current OWS movement too. While some other unions have thrown support behind OWS, including the UFT and SEIU and TWU, the building trades have stayed on the sidelines - including unions representing those working on the WTC complex across the street from Zuccotti Park. It's an interesting dynamic to say the least.

I reverse that. I love Alton because he explains the science of what you are doing, which makes it much clearer to me.

I really don't get how the supposedly hyperpatriotic GOP supporters reconcile their love of corporations with their patriotism.

It really seems like the GOP is less an party that even claims to put the aims of the US ahead of the interest of the ultrawealthy.

We are not just competing on wages, we are also competing on other costs, such as safety and environmental standards. And that does nobody a favor: it punishes US firms for upholding regulations and gives other nations no incentive to improve theirs.

I have less trouble with the concept of competing on wages, that can even be a good thing if it encourages us to become more efficient and productive. But allowing competition on safety and environmental costs is the down side of globalization.

Trouble is (imo) you can fix that salary thing by cutting executive salaries. You can even spread that out among the employees. Cutting executive salaries looks good. But bringing jobs home works well. Add bringing troops home before you bring the jobs home (or grow more jobs here) and you amplify your problems.

If rank and file employees were paid more, they would be able to buy new homes, shop at the malls, buy new cars, eat at restaurants, take in more movies and maybe take a decent vacation.

This would create more jobs. Having all the wealth in this country concentrated in the hands of a few is not only immoral, it is dangerous for the economy. Just like in the 20s, before the great depression.

It's not a one-trick fix. You have multiple issues conflicting with each other. Captialism, globalization, environmental, national interests, corporate interests, trade imbalances, substanable standards of living, and of course politics.

Simply cutting executive's salaries won't fix things. A better ideal would be making their compensation reasonable and tying it to actual long-term improvement of the corporation in question.

This planet having a global economy is, IMO, good for getting it acting peaceful since having wars with your trading partners is generally non-productive. But, you also have to take the hidden costs of ignoring environmental factors (pollution and energy production) as well as realize that we should be supporting an improved standard of living for the rest of the world.

Is our standard substainable for 7 billion people? I doubt it without some massive technology break throughs - especially in energy production. So we then get a few choices as a set of cultures -
a. If we ramp to a lower standard overall, is it going to be a catastrophic or easy decline?

b. If we opt to maintain disparate standards (have and have-nots) will it be a stable set-up with some mobility between the groups? (And this will obviously be a constant social friction point.)

And we can go on from there.

Okay, Cain denies sexual harrassment allegations. But...what is that last paragraph?

Speaking on Fox News on Monday morning, Herman Cain denied politically explosive sexual harassment charges stemming from a Politico story last night, but he did acknowledge that he was “falsely accused” during his 1990s tenure at the National Restaurant Association.

“It is totally baseless and totally false,” Cain said.

Cain also declared that any other potential future charges against him and his campaign would be “trumped-up allegations” and “nothing else.”

Not sure what to make of that. Is it a pre-emptive thing, or might there be other allegations/settlements with Cain out there?

I called my friends in Israel last night. Their son graduated from IDF tanker school tomorrow. He is stationed 2 miles from the Gaza border and they are staying about 20 miles south of Tel Aviv.

Do the math on the salaries. Redistribute "x" (x being what we would call excessive salary from a few hundred execs) among the tens of thousands of employees. See how much money that is-as a part of GDP.

Questions, semi rhetorical-How do we do that $ redistribution with high dollar actors and athletes? Salary caps? Two million? Four million? Who gets the excess pay instead? Or is this wall street only? Madison avenue too? I have a nagging hunch you redistribute less than a hundred billion. A drop in the bucket. But I'd love to see real numbers, I admit I'm playing a hunch.

If you hit unearned income with taxes, that will cut the deficit, but nothing more than that. Not for years.

As long as we keep our eye on the ball for long term growth sure. But these things often distract. If globalization is the bigger factor in unemployment than tax charts, lets keep a proper focus. On globalization. Lets not be distracted by sideshows that make little difference.

Probably an attempt at preempting further allegations. Yet, it also suggests that there might be more "there" there. He's denying anything untoward, yet the organization had some kind of payout. I guess there ought to be a line of questions towards the organization over the kind of payout, what was involved, and why all the secrecy over the payout if something untoward didn't happen. Considering that the lawyers sealed that one up pretty tight, I doubt you'd get answers as to what happened unless they agreed (and realized it would do less damage to the organization than keeping it sealed).

I don't think this has legs - unless there are more incidents in his closet.

This probably has nothing to do with what you said but raising taxes on the rich would do nothing regarding wage disparity. It would help to reduce public debt and generate revenue for operating costs and maintaining government operations. In many ways, the notion that raising taxes on the rich would resolve wage stagnation is like creating a Walmart nation in which the government winds up doing the work that the private sector should be doing or taking up the slack because of low wages.

Well if you are putting aside 10 billion for bonuses and compensation, as recently discovered at Goldman Sachs (even as they show a loss)...that would go a long way in increasing non executive compensation.

I also agree that sports figures and top TV and movie actors salaries are insane. They cause our cable bills, and ticket prices to go up too. Whats happening is the opposite of trickle down, supply side crap.

I stopped watching it because I thought it was kinda lame. Lange is great but that's about it. I thought it was actually too toned down and the story line is kinda of boring.

Question - could the Cain camp denying anything happened violate the settlement agreement? I'm assuming it wouldn't, but it seems a little unfair for Cain's camp to be able to talk about it while those who were paid off aren't allowed to.

And I guess you would get into further legal parsing as to whether denying the allegations are actually 'talking about it' by definition.
