Four Right Wing Georgia Militia Members Charged In Ricin Terror Plot

What right wing violence?
US News • Views: 22,685

Four members of a Georgia militia have been charged by the FBI with plotting terror attacks using the biological poison ricin.

“When it comes time to saving the Constitution, that means some people gotta die,” an arrest affidavit quotes one of the defendants, Frederick Thomas, as saying during one recorded conversation.

According to arrest affidavits filed in the case, 67-year-old Dan Roberts and Thomas, 73, agreed to buy a silencer, a bomb and parts to convert a semi-automatic rifle to a fully automatic machine gun from an undercover agent.

Meanwhile, 65-year-old Ray Adams and 68-year-old Samuel Crump worked to obtain castor beans and produce ricin, an FBI agent states in the documents. …

The affidavits don’t identify the “known militia organization.” But according to the documents, the men talked about spreading ricin across several cities at once, including Washington, Atlanta, New Orleans and Jacksonville, Florida.

During an April meeting at his home, Thomas allegedly told participants he had a “bucket list” of politicians, government officials, corporate leaders and media figures he said should be targeted to “make the country right again.”

“I could shoot ATF and IRS all day long. All the judges and the DOJ and the attorneys and prosecutors,” the affidavit quotes Thomas as saying.

Crump allegedly said he wanted to make 10 pounds of ricin for distribution. “Dump that little (unintelligible) that’s all you gotta do is lay it in the damn road, the cars are gonna spread it,” the affidavit quotes him as saying.

The Southern Poverty Law Center has linked one of the suspects to a militia called the “North Georgia Area Command.”

Although the affidavit did not name any group the four men were affiliated with, the Southern Poverty Law Center has found records identifying a “Capt. Dan Roberts” as the contact for the 440th Squad of a militia group called the North Georgia Area Command. That command is part of the Georgia Militia, a group that has 19 chapters in that state.

At one meeting, Thomas allegedly discussed creating a “bucket list” of officials, politicians, business leaders and journalists who he thought should be “taken out” to “make the country right again.” He said, “I’ve been to war, and I’ve taken life before, and I can do it again,” according to the affidavit.

Thomas is also quoted as saying: “Let’s shoot the bastards that we discover are anti-American or enemies of America, treasonous. And to me the easiest and best way to do that is to walk up behind them with a suppressed .22. I am of the , uh, old school, Mafia; one behind the ear with a .22 is all you need. … Of course a .40 Smith and Wesson or .45 ACP is just as good, even better, [be]cause it makes the whole head explode.” At another point, discussing scouting buildings to bomb in Atlanta, he allegedly said, “We’d have to blow the whole building, like Timothy McVeigh.”

And not just talk:

During a four-month period that ended when they were arrested on Monday, Thomas and Roberts negotiated with an undercover FBI agent to buy a silencer for a rifle, as well as a conversion kit to make the rifle fully automatic. According to the FBI, Thomas planned to use the silencer he was purchasing and said he would clean the rifle and use rubber gloves to conceal his fingerprints. As the negotiations dragged on, Thomas and Roberts expressed concerns that the undercover agent was a law enforcement officer, “but wanted to go forward with the transaction anyway,” according to an FBI statement.

GA Terrorism Suspects Allegedly Wanted To Make Fox Expert's Blood-Soaked Novel A Reality

Four alleged members of a Georgia militia group were arrested yesterday relating to their alleged plot to kill numerous government officials. According to the complaint, one of the arrested repeatedly cited as the source of their plan the novel Absolved, authored by Fox News expert Mike Vanderboegh, the former militia member famous for urging his blog readers to hurl bricks through the windows of Democratic offices.

In Vanderboegh's novel, which was self-published online, underground militia fighters declare war on the federal government over gun control laws and same-sex marriage, leading to a second American revolution. In the introduction to Absolved, Vanderboegh calls the book "a cautionary tale for the out-of-control gun cops of the ATF" and "a combination field manual, technical manual and call to arms for my beloved gunnies of the armed citizenry."

The Alabama-based blogger was one of the first to report on the ATF's failed Operation Fast and Furious. He has since promoted a variety of absurd conspiracy theories about the story.

In recent months, Fox News has mainstreamed Vanderboegh, treating him as an expert on the ATF's Operation Fast and Furious, featuring him in cable and online reports and identifying him as an "online journalist" and an "authority on the Fast and Furious investigation." Fox has not acknowledged Vanderboegh's extremist views, actions, and affiliations.

Well, the fact that they apparently were going to act on it is a bit surprising. The idea of doing it, sadly, I'm not surprised about in the least. When the Korean War vet is talking about how the only reason they wouldn't want someone to kill Obama is because Biden would be worse, you find somewhere else to hang out.

I'm not shocked at all. Many of these guys are left overs from the original militia / survivalist wave of the 80's. They grew up politically reading Howard Ruff instead of listening to Glen Beck. They are full of bile, and they know they are dieing soon. They see it as going out in a blaze of glory, and they are the scariest sort of right wing extremists. Confederate Flag Activist Behind Georgia Terror Plot

Excerpt:

Another conspirator, Dan Roberts, is a long-time Confederate flag activist. In 2001, a Jacksonville Times-Union story about the state of Georgia's efforts to change the flag noted Roberts' presence outside the statehouse. According to the paper, Roberts had attempted to burn a replica of the newer flag (with a smaller Confederate emblem), but failed to do so because it was made out of nylon.

In 2004, Roberts joined with the white supremacist Council of Conservative Citizens to hold a protest rally outside a Georgia middle school whose principal had supposedly offended their southern culture "by her alleged banning the display of St. Andrew’s Cross on school grounds," the local Toccoa Record reported. According the Record's account of that event, protesters threw a rock at school bus with children inside.

Probably lucky for him. If you can get artificial-fibers flags burning, they tend to turn into a napalm-like substance that you can't get off your shoes, right quick.

(When I was a kid...oh, hell, it's too complicated to explain. The flag was that of the Soviet Union, the burner was Afghani, and his shoes were totalled.)

Time to remove even the half sarc tag. From Kragar's link:

As TPM previously reported, Roberts sued a number of local officials and a newspaper in federal court in relation to a 2004 “Southern Heritage” event he organized at a middle school that featured the Confederate flag. According to the lawsuit, he “co-sponsored and assisted in flag rallies organized by the Southern Rights Association [hereafter SRA]. He is widely known in the area as a flag supporter.”

According to the Georgia militia, he’s commanding officer of the 440th squad.

I wouldn't call it "re-living". I'd call it "continuing to live..."

Before anyone starts the "idle threats" dodge regarding these individuals, they had the means, and the necessary knowledge to implement the attacks they were planning.

Georgia militia plot | Affidavit outlines plans for killings

Adams formerly worked at the USDA for the Agricultural Research Service as a lab technician, the U.S. Department of Agriculture verified to the FBI. Adams is accused of trying to help Crump obtain ricin for use as a weapon, authorities said. According to the affidavit, Crump once worked for the Centers for Disease Control for a contractor doing maintenance work for the CDC.

The article also has a detailed timeline regarding their planning process.

Finally, from Mother Jones: Some of the accused's right-wing ties are starting to come to light.

Confederate Flag Activist Behind Georgia Terror Plot

The affidavit names four individuals, Samuel Crump, Frederick Roberts, Ray Adams, and Dan Roberts. According to his Facebook page, Crump is a big fan of a number of conservative grassroots and astroturf organizations, including [Koch Brothers' front organization] Americans for Prosperity.

[...]

In 2001, a Jacksonville Times-Union story about the state of Georgia's efforts to change the flag noted Roberts' presence outside the statehouse. According the Record's account of that event, protesters threw a rock at school bus with children inside.

An ensuing lawsuit noted of Roberts that he "co-sponsored and assisted in flag rallies organized by the Southern Rights Association," and "is widely known in that area as a flag supporter." Roberts was a "Captain" and Northeast Georgia Liaison for the Georgia Militia, a neo-Confederate organization. (Here's a photo gallery from a 2003 Confederate flag rally in Toccoa for which Roberts was the emcee.)

Crump allegedly said he wanted to make 10 pounds of ricin for distribution. “Dump that little (unintelligible) that’s all you gotta do is lay it in the damn road, the cars are gonna spread it,” the affidavit quotes him as saying.

Red Dawn is an upcoming American war film directed by Dan Bradley and written by Jeremy Passmore and Carl Ellsworth based on the 1984 film of the same name. The remake stars Chris Hemsworth and Josh Peck as brothers Jed and Matt Eckert. The film was scheduled to be released on November 24, 2010, but was shelved due to MGM's financial troubles, and is now set for a 2012 release. Instead of depicting a Soviet invasion of the United States as in the 1984 film, the 2012 version's storyline was originally filmed with a Chinese invasion. This was later edited to depict a North Korean invasion in post-production due to concerns from distributors.

Perry blames editing for viral 'drunk' video, said it was a 'good speech'

Texas Gov. Rick Perry said he "felt great" during the speech he gave Friday that turned into a viral video online and brought negative attention to the presidential candidate, with some saying he appeared to be under the influence.

"It was a great crowd, a good response. I guess you can do anything you want with a video and make it look any way you want, but I felt good, felt great, and I think the message got across very well, so it was a good speech," said Perry to reporters Tuesday in Des Moines, Iowa.

The video features clips of the GOP presidential candidate’s speech at the Cornerstone Action Awards Dinner that has since been viewed on YouTube more than 800,000 times and gained traction in the media this week for its exuberant depiction of Perry.

Never mind the fact that the complete, unedited version of his speech is also available online (including attached to this story)

You have to wonder if some of the writers from "Breaking Bad" didn't have a Tom Clancy like "oh shit...." moment after reading about this.

Hrm. Well, he didn't say that he was buying silver, just that I should.

How good of a friend is the guy?

How good of a friend is the guy?

He says I'm a level 3.

I actually really like him and he's great to go camping with. He's highly competent, unlike most 'survivalists'. He's kind of like that dude from Tremors.

He also got rejected by the Army for being 'too militant'.

Wait, did someone say "Alex Jones"?

Surely, Conservatives will agree that terrorists everywhere should be treated equally. Drones? Special Ops? Guantanamo? Waterboarding? Come on, Conservatives, we are waiting.

re: #129 Obdicut

My survivalist friend has just emailed me this very story,, and for some reason has predicted it will cause the gold bubble to burst and is advising me to buy silver.

Wha?

Every time I hear these bozos (and yes that includes YOU, Ron Paul) talk about switching over to gold or silver versus a more diversified (and stable) basis for our monetary supply I have to ask myself if any of them ever picked up a history book. Before the Great Depression, there was another Depression in the United States. Three guesses what one of the primary causes of said financial crash was?

Panic of 1837

The Panic of 1837 was a financial crisis in the United States built on a speculative fever.[1] The end of the Second Bank of the United States had produced a period of runaway inflation, but on May 10, 1837 in New York City, every bank began to accept payment only in specie (gold and silver coinage), forcing a dramatic, deflationary backlash. This was based on the assumption by former president, Andrew Jackson, that the government was selling land for state bank notes of questionable value. The Panic was followed by a five-year depression, with the failure of banks and then-record-high unemployment levels.

Also of note: In 1835, Andrew Jackson through forced budgetary spending cuts allowed the United States to have zero debt for the only time in the nation's history. Within two years' time, directly due to these actions, there were major bank failures, and the worst depression the nation had ever seen, and one that would not be matched in scope or severity for nearly 100 years.

I just checked Gateway Pundit and Geller's site. Not a peep about this so far. I'll be curious to see how the right reacts to this, especially with the Fox News connection.

I expect it'll be a "Picking on old people who were just talking" sort of approach.

Meanwhile, there's a guilty plea being entered by one of the Hutaree militia members. While the defendants claim that they were engaging in tough talk - protected by the 1st Amendment, prosecutors note that they were heavily armed and had taken steps in furtherance of the talk. Another one of the defendants has been declared incompetent to stand trial.

I mean like, they couldn't even conquer SK, because SK would totally pwn them.

Instead, they should have filmed an alternative ending for distribution in China in which the Chinese win./

re: #13 Thanos

I'm not shocked at all. Many of these guys are left overs from the original militia / survivalist wave of the 80's. They grew up politically reading Howard Ruff instead of listening to Glen Beck. They are full of bile, and they know they are dieing soon. They see it as going out in a blaze of glory, and they are the scariest sort of right wing extremists. The holocaust museum shooter was no spring chicken either, so I'm not going to be one of the ones cracking jokes about their age. You can count on everyone right of center making light of it that way however to downplay it.

QFA ... accuracy, that is.

Wha?

Redneck retirees dreaming of going out in a blaze of "glory" has something to do with the price of gold? Ricin isn't made of gold.

Gotta agree with the "Wha?"

170 Tiny Alien Kitties are Watching You  Wed, Nov 2, 2011 12:51:22pm

and all this is somehow going to "preserve" the Constitution?

Effing dimwits are set to destroy the Constitution and the rights it confers to every citizen of this country simply because they disagree with the legitimate wishes of the majority of the voters.

You want to change the country and preserve the constitution get people to listen to you and vote for your issues. Don't hide behind the flag and claim patriotism while trying to institute anarchy and gang rule by groups of armed thugs instead of an elected government. Regardless of your supposed motivations and grievances your no better than the fucking Somali warlords and pirates and that is what you will turn our country into if you succeed, a "Failed State" just like Somalia.

BTW, you assholes are not the only ones with guns so you better be prepared for a lot more than just "token" resistance to your sick delusional power grab schemes.

And he's a member of this 'group', of course:

It's also mindbending to think of someone who really has Swayzie as their favorite actor. He's cool and all, but favorite? Wow.

I'm guessing they *loved* Swayze because he was in Red Dawn (and Next of Kin too, among other movies)...

re: #127 Varek Raith

Lol.

Is John Milius writing this version too? The Red Dawn remake sounds just like Homefront (the video game released last year that pretty much flopped...and the story for it was also written by Milius), which was simply an updated, interactive version of Red Dawn.
