Right Wing Terror Suspect Arrested In Georgia Ranted About Health Reform On Erickson’s RedState.com

The sea in which the extremists swim
Wingnuts • Views: 23,119

Imagine my surprise to learn that one of the would-be right wing terrorists arrested in Georgia this week was a commenter at Erick Erickson’s RedState.com.

Today, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution published a broader picture of the four men accused of the terror plan. Dustin Baker at the blog GAPolitico flags one important part of the AJC story: that accused terrorist Fred Thomas blogged on redstate.com, the website edited by CNN’s Erick Erickson. The Thomas blog post highlighted by Baker and AJC revealed that at one point, he did not “advocate a general rebellion against the U.S. Government for cause,” but seemed conflicted about the idea of violent revolution. Something apparently changed between that unpromoted post, published in July of 2008 and this year, when the alleged plot began taking shape.

A ThinkProgress examination of Thomas’s online writing in the following years shows that the alleged terrorist grew more and more upset, and expressed sympathy with the anti-Obama conspiracies posted on RedState. Last year, he posted a comment to a popular RedState post about the evils of health reform. Thomas claimed that the “ObummerCare Bill” not only “won’t be forgiven,” but will lead to “TYRANNY of the worst order” and “civil war.” (view a screenshot of the comment here)

The other blog Thomas mentions in his RedState comment is apparently the militia website run by Mike Vanderboegh, who gained infamy for calling for violence over the health reform bill and for writing an online series advocating a new civil war against President Obama. ThinkProgress has covered Vanderboegh, who recently signed up as a commentator for Fox News, here and here.

There's something funny about an admirer of the Confederacy bitching about tyranny.

Tyranny is what someone else does to you.

What you do to someone else is...um...the natural order of things.

Good point. I still love that a man who admires a society whose existence was based on protecting slavery whining about health care legislation tyrannizing him though.

It is ironic, but it's also par for the course. The Confederacy was all about fighting tyranny. Tyranny, in this case, being stuff like 'no you can't expand slavery clear to the sea, no dice'.

Just checked the Redstate front page.... and of course this story is not a headline.

Erick son of Erick is so unable to deal with the reality of his followers, and of course his followers are in denial about the ugly among them - this is the nature of a large slice of the American electorate today.

Of course not. Palling around with extremists seems like a lot of fun but when things go predictable wrong they'll just pretend it never happened.

I've found it interesting that he plays this down.

The National Baptist Convention, Inc needs to kick his ridiculous rear end. I wonder if Morehouse even claims him, at this point.

I do enjoy reminding the confederates he went to one of those racist historically black colleges, you know like what Malcolm X Shabazz Kwanzaa Abdul set up in Oakland after he put up all those colored only signs.

What never ceases to amaze me, unless I'm feeling particularly dark about the human condition, is that we live in an age of unparalleled access to global information. These people cannot possibly miss the stories about places where actual tyranny is taking place, where hundreds and thousands of innocents are exploited, enslaved and killed by actual tyrants with actual force. Where people are actually oppressed. Where the most basic of freedoms, the most basic of rights, are nonexistent. Where ordinary people struggle for life in fear every day.

Understand this, screen berets:
Armed thugs beating down your door, raping your wife, and shooting or enslaving your children = tyranny.

A democratically elected government using taxpayer money to provide vaccinations and reduce the cost of a doctor visit = not tyranny.

This is not hard.

Yep, traditional family values.

It is ironic, but it's also par for the course. The Confederacy was all about fighting tyranny. Tyranny, in this case, being stuff like 'no you can't expand slavery clear to the sea, no dice'.

The problem is that too many people still don't know that. They don't know that Lincoln wasn't planning to abolish slavery, just forbid its expansion. But the fire-eaters wouldn't stand for anything that even implied any problem at all with slavery, and decided to schism from the northern members of the Democratic party when the northerners refused to accept the southern view. The Southern ruling class was in a fit of hysterical anger and thought that anyone who refused to fall into line behind them was out to destroy them.

re: #69 goddamnedfrank

When he said the punishment was for stealing I thought "WTF, did she pull a Bernie Madoff or something and destroy thousands of people's life savings." Because that's how hard he hit her, like she'd ruined everything for everyone forever, people were probably going to die as a result and their family would never live down the shame of her horrible crime and its destructive consequences. Nope, she just downloaded some shit online. I'm pretty sure most kids nowadays do that at some point. I don't want to say it's no big deal ... no wait, that's exactly what I'm saying, it's no big deal. Just delete the files, say "don't do that again," and move the hell on with your life.

Fuck, you can't even hit horses that hard in Texas, but it's apparently okay to beat disobedient children to sleep.

I was thinking about that. Right. Punishing his own daughter with CP by beating here repeatedly with a leather belt. Not only by beating her but by engaging in psychological abuse through his words and manipulating (no doubt coercing) his own wife to take part in the assault. All for "stealing" a song from the internet. Most likely a Torrent share or similar. What a puke.

I did once have a couple of kids tell a boy in my class that he was a 'honky'. Russian-born. Didn't get it. (Actually, I'm not sure a kid raised in the States these days would necessarily get it.)

He asked me what it meant. I thought he was saying 'hunky' at first. Then I got it. Then I turned the Death Gaze on the two boys who were dying laughing.

They were all good buddies. He threw something at them, and life went on.

Parenting axiom 1: If you're out of control, leave. Leave until you are under control again. If that means a baby cries in a crib for 20 minutes while you get your act together somewhere else in the house, so be it. It's better than you will be at that moment.

Parenting axiom 2: Never run a sting operation on your own child. If they can't have a cookie, and it's a really big deal, lock the cookies up. Sheesh.

Parenting axiom 3: Criticize the act, not the child. It's not "you're bad," it's "that was bad."

A House subcommittee is voting today on a bill that would bar the EPA from regulating farm dust. Of course, the EPA isn't trying to regulate farm dust, but voting on legislation that has anything to do with reality is so pre-midterms.

Republicans like John Boehner, Eric Cantor, and Herman Cain have been citing the nonexistent farm dust rule for months as a textbook example of EPA overreach. In a way, they're right -- it is a textbook example of EPA overreach as envisioned by the GOP, in the sense that it's totally made up.

Well...it will certainly ensure them the confederate votes.

Lol if they ever got even a fraction of those voting bloc numbers they think they are entitled to own outright, they would have to actually appeal to the constituency.

This is why I wonder at people like HC's intelligence, or who he's even talking to, when he claims things like he can split The Black VoteTM. Lol in what parallel existence?

He's talking to people who will never, never give up hope that someohow they can get the votes they believe themselves entitled to.

Bill O'Reilly Enlists Deepak Chopra In War On Richard Dawkins & Continues Claim That Jesus Guided Evolution

Heh. Deepak Chopra is one of the biggest BS artists around. Bill O'Reilly is a notorious bird brain. The heart is a metaphor for emotions or thought. It responds to brain activity and not the other way around.

Awesome. Seems easy to do considering. I like the way he was saying that Dawkins was angry. He never gets angry but you know the stereotype. Atheists are always angry. And there he was being interviewed by one of the angriest buttholes on Fox News Bill O'Reilly. Right.

Even better--they no longer burn down houses. Not as much.

My b-i-l's father was an antique dealer. They had a lot of antique Christmas tree candle holders. Once a holiday, they would actually put candles in them and light them, then nervously sing Silent Night while watching the tree carefully and with a bucket of water ready to go.

That sounds...holiday-like.

156 Kragar  Thu, Nov 3, 2011 9:07:33pm

Don't forget the real story of Christmas folks.

On the night of Jesus's birth, 4 wise men were given a vision, but only 3 heeded the call. The 4th wise man, Nicholas, refused to deliver a present to the child of God, and for this sin, he was stricken with a powerful curse. Like Cain, he must wander the earth forever. In an act of atonement, he leaves presents for all the children of the world, in the hope that someday, he will leave a present for the second coming of the Messiah and be granted peace on earth at last.

Now, who wants to hear about those poor damned souls called elves?

Carrie A. Nation for VP!

Nobody will ever give a speech drunk again. Ever. Anywhere.

And nobody is going to get happy hands around this VP. Not as long as she's got that hatchet.

This was too short for a page.

Is it just me, or did our national leaders tone down the crazy by a lot after the civil war? I'm having trouble coming up with one that was just crazy, and not crazy and evil, from the post civil war era.

Actual presidents don't count, so don't nominate Teddy.

Hunh. I was told that Nicholas was a greek nobleman who threw coins into some girls' windows so they could have a dowry and get married. He married the youngest, which might have been his inspiration.

"Christmukah" is not a true observance, it's nothing more than a commerical marketing scheme. Fior those who want true religious syncretism, I present for your consideration a new Winter Solistice holiday: Chanumas.

Observance of this holiday season starts on erev Thanksgiving, when the Head of the Household (the sages say that all who are bar or bat mitzvah) wtites a ritual letter to the President of the United States offering to pay down the National Debt in return for being made Chief Rabbi of Israel. This is in memory of the High Priests Jason and Menaleus, who actually pulled the same stunt with King Antiochus IV, and thus set in motion the events that led up to Channukah. [Of course, it is forbidden to actually mail this letter, unless, of course, you want to be included on the U.S. Secret Service's "nutcase list."]

The day after Thangkgiving is called "Black Friday," named in honor of the holy frum ("black-hatter") Jews who are inconvienced in their Shabbos shopping by the increased traffic.

From this point until 10 days after the Winter Solistice, it is considered meritorious to buy things you don't need and give them to people you don't like. It is also considered equally meritorious to return unwanted gifts to the store. This is a mitzvah, as it provides gainful employment to store clerks and inmates of the Chinese penal system, who manufactured the gifts in the first place. It is obligatory for Jews to only buy items at discounted price. This requirement is optional for Gentiles.

Truly frum observance of Chanumas involves lighted displays on the house in the front and back yards. It is considered meritorious to leave one's sukkah standing through Chanumas, so one can reuse the lights without having to put them out twice. It is said that Rabbi Menachem Mistletoe had a particularly compelling display, which consisted a a statue of a Maccabean warrior with his foot on the chest of a prostrate Antiochus, about to plunge his sword through the villain's heart, and an inscription in blinking LED lights: "Peace on Earth: because we won!!"

I remember when I was a kid my grandparents getting me and my brother these Hanna-Barbara cartoon short films of Bible Stories. That was actually pretty cool. I still love Rankin-Bass's Christmas specials from the 60's the most though. I'll love the Frosty with animated Jimmy Durante narrating.

That goes for Andrew Jackson, too, who ties with Teddy for Craziest President We Ever Had.

Just for the record: The Indians would have been better off with Sam Houston over Andrew Jackson.

Reversal of biological age! Get it now by buying Depak Chopra's latest video! Through higher consciousness! This is no different than Christian science. "Cosmic consciousness" won't reverse aging. Neither will it prevent or cure cancers or even the common cold. It might make you feel better as a meditative exercise.

So Chopra babbles on here and then in the end he says it doesn't matter if you die anyway. Whatever.

re: #84 SanFranciscoZionist

I did once have a couple of kids tell a boy in my class that he was a 'honky'. Russian-born. Didn't get it. (Actually, I'm not sure a kid raised in the States these days would necessarily get it.)

He asked me what it meant. I thought he was saying 'hunky' at first. Then I got it. Then I turned the Death Gaze on the two boys who were dying laughing.

They were all good buddies. He threw something at them, and life went on.

(It's not easy to be the only white kid in the entire middle school.)

It's not easy being the only black kid in any environment, either.

HC knows what he's doing.
I'm gonna be blunt. Whenever HC opens his mouth, all I hear is, "Am I doing good now boss?"
I'm terrible, but he's worse.

Yeah see, I hear that, and something more....like a classic opportunist gunning for some kind of media deal, or historical spot that he's already got under his belt into perpetuity: First Black Republican Candidate That People Ever Talked About With Any Air of Seriousness.

Nice going Herman. Way to represent e_e

There are people still playing that game, regardless of the personal ethical toll it takes on their humanity. Sad watching it happen on such a grand scale....it could never, with anything other than a Black D incumbent.

One has to wonder how many people this creep sent up the river for lesser offenses. I'm sure he was proud of himself when he was handing down his sentences. Meanwhile being a child abuser himself.

I'm afraid of just the opposite....letting abusers off to continue abusing because he himself was a prick.

Can't condemn a site for a cook posting. That's intellectually dishonest. Who knows what type of people post at any site. Bet you have a few nutbags here too. Heck I could be one.
