Video: Crushing the Myth of Global Cooling

Climate “skeptics” lying again
Environment • Views: 22,851

It’s all over the right wing media and blogs: the absurdly false claim that there’s been “no global warming since 1998.” We’ve posted about this before, but it’s one of those denial myths that just keeps popping up again and again like a malignant jack-in-the-box. Peter Sinclair’s new video shows excerpts from a great speech by climate scientist Ben Santer that utterly debunks this pernicious falsehood. Again.

I really am at the point where I think that it's going to be the US military, not the elected branches of government, that takes the lead in preparing for climate change. As such, it's going to go pretty badly for us. I don't think we're going to fix our broken political system in time to address AGW.

I hope I'm wrong. But at least the military is dealing with reality. Maybe they can even eventually bring pressure to bear on the GOP.

said it for years...it will have to become a nat'l security issue, and even that end around may fail miserably

Oh, c'mon... the next thing you're going to try and convince me is that the Earth is billions of years old and that we came from monkeys.

Everyone knows "scientists" are in it for the money.

More noise to beat down:

Microsoft Funds Koch’s Climate-Denying Tea Party Conference
Microsoft Corporation, which argues that climate pollution requires a “comprehensive and global response,” is sponsoring the Koch brothers’ Tea Party convention taking place in Washington, DC. Microsoft is a “gold sponsor” of the Americans For Prosperity Foundation’s fifth annual Defending The American Dream Summit, cheek and jowl with top climate denial front groups like the Heartland Institute, the American Legislative Exchange Council, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

It's strange to see Microsoft in a list with Townhall and the Washington Times.

The United States Navy already has plans to patrol an ice-free, navigable Arctic Ocean.

They can have my SUV when they pry it from my cold dead hands.

(I am sure you wont get the joke, but it seemed funny to me.)

Australia passes landmark carbon price laws

Australia's parliament passed landmark laws to impose a price on carbon emissions on Tuesday in one of the biggest economic reforms in a decade, giving new impetus to December's global climate talks in South Africa.

The scheme's impact will be felt right across the economy, from miners to LNG producers, airlines and steel makers and is aimed at making firms more energy efficient and push power generation toward gas and renewables.

Australia accounts for just 1.5 percent of global emissions, but is the developed world's highest emitter per capita due to a reliance on coal to generate electricity.

I don't see that has "utterly debunks this pernicious falsehood." He's shown that the claim is not justifiable, yet. He's using 20 year trends, rightly so, but we won't know about the trend for this last decade until we have data for the following decade. The current 20 year trend clearly shows continued, albeit slowed warming. I'm curious what the trend will show once we have data through 2021. One thing I'm certain of... nothing will happen to significantly decrease GHG emissions in this time, so we'll get to see if the predictions for 2020 and 2030 are correct.

Right ... so your idea of a good strategy is to just kind of wait around for another 10 years?

The reality is that deniers will never believe anything that contradicts their myths, no matter how much evidence they're shown. It's not about evidence or science for the people who spread outrageous lies like the one debunked by this video -- it's about right wing ideology and a massively funded disinformation campaign by energy industries and lobbies, intended to prevent action as long as possible to protect their bottom lines.

re: #12 chunkymonkey

The established data proves nothing because it could all go away again somehow in the next ten years.

Nor would we know anything about the next decade until we have the next decade! BUNK I SAY! BUNK!

re: #12 chunkymonkey

The pernicious falsehood comes from deniers cherry picking one slice of data - in the only way it can be sliced- to falsely and wilfully misinterpret the whole set. Even then, the trends still show warming, just not up to the same confidence interval.

When one looks at the whole data set, the warming is clear to any who know even the most basic statistics.

From your response, you seem to put on an air of understanding basic statistics. If so, then you should be able to look at the data set and not be fooled by such nonsense. Anyone who knows math can do this. There are therefore only two options.

1. You can do the math but are lying just because you are an ignorant douche.

2. You can't do the math and are lying not just because you are only an ignorant douche, but also an arrogant fool who pretends pseudo-intellectualism as well.
