I'll post this here.

During his speech, Cain also criticized President Barack Obama for canceling the space shuttle program — a decision actually made by President George W. Bush — as NASA shifts its focus on travel farther from Earth's orbit.

"I can tell you that as president of the United States, we are not going to bum a ride to outer space with Russia," Cain said to loud applause. "We're going to regain our rightful place in terms of technology, space technology."

It seems appropriate.

Oh, roar a roar for Nora,
Nora Alice in the night,
For she has seen Aurora
Borealis burning bright.

A furore for our Nora!
And applaud Aurora seen!
Where, throughout the Summer, has
Our Borealis been?

High Flight

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;
Sunward I've climbed, and joined the tumbling mirth
Of sun-split clouds, — and done a hundred things
You have not dreamed of — wheeled and soared and swung
High in the sunlit silence. Hov'ring there,
I've chased the shouting wind along, and flung
My eager craft through footless halls of air. . . .

Up, up the long, delirious burning blue
I've topped the wind-swept heights with easy grace
Where never lark, or ever eagle flew —
And, while with silent, lifting mind I've trod
The high untrespassed sanctity of space,
Put out my hand, and touched the face of God.

I'm an old school "rocket scientist neighborhood" aerospace guy. So I just love this stuff. Where I grew up out in the far west San Fernando Valley you could here the roar of the rocket tests in the '60's. The glow could be seen out toward Simi Valley, in the hills where the engine test stands were. So a couple more quotes I knew where to find... And I saved the best for last. Hoyle was wrong about "steady state" but he was right about that.

If you could see the earth illuminated when you were in a place as dark as night, it would look to you more splendid than the moon.

— Galileo Galilei, Dialogue Concerning the Two Chief World Systems, 1632.

Never in all their history have men been able truly to conceive of the world as one: a single sphere, a globe, having the qualities of a globe, a round earth in which all the directions eventually meet, in which there is no center because every point, or none, is center — an equal earth which all men occupy as equals. The airman's earth, if free men make it, will be truly round: a globe in practice, not in theory.

— Archibald MacLeish, 'The Image of Victory,' commencement address, Williams College, Williamstown, Massachusetts, May 1942. later published in A Time to Act, 1943. Twenty-five years later MacLeish would write again of this view, but this time it would be published on the front page of the New York Times with a photograph as illustration.

Once a photograph of the Earth, taken from the outside, is available, a new idea as powerful as any in history will be let loose.

— attributed to Sir Fred Hoyle, 1948.

Especially this:

I have several myself including this one. Kelly was the consummate political cartoonist of the 20th Century. Even Trudeau and Breathed aren't in his class.

The best part of the linked book was Kelly redoing the courtroom scene from Alice in Wonderland with the characters of Pogo. It turned out to be the perfect satire of McCarthy and HUAC.

Another mainstream media outlet cites radical anti-Israel activist and blogger Richard Silverstein as a source for secret information about Israel. First it was the New York Times. Today it's Ynet, which reports:

US blogger Richard Silverstein said Saturday that Israel was the mastermind behind the blast the killed at least 17 people at an Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps base near Tehran.

In his blog, Tikun Olam, Silverstein quotes an Israeli expert as saying that the Mossad was responsible for the explosion, in collaboration with the Iranian militant opposition group Mojahedin-e-Khalq.

Of course, there is the possibility that Israel is behind the Iranian explosion. But why would a news outlet quote an extremist blogger, with a troubled record on the facts, who cites an undisclosed source? What is the news value in that? Ynet does not even bother to identify Silverstein for the anti-Israel radical that he is.

I (and my crew) had just finished setting up a new video wall in an electronics store in southern New Hampshire

We had a live broadcast from NASA off of satellite piped in to all the new display TVs in the store (way before the NASA channel was offered on cable systems)

We were standing in front of the new wall of screens, about 30 feet wide by 12 feet high, admiring our work.

Then,,,, damn !!!! you could hear a pin drop in the store

So I'm sitting here deconstructing this case for a paper that's due tomorrow, and I'm currently annoyed.

Is it too much to ask for justices who put real effort into their dissents? Between Clarence Thomas relying on child rearing tips from the 17th and 18th centuries and Stephen Breyer padding his case with a pointless 15 page list of articles he claims backs up his case, this is some of the laziest reasoning I've ever read. WTF.

The only shuttle launch I've ever watched live was the Challenger..
I'll never forget it.. I was at my buddies house that morning and we were going to work sometime..( Government workers...you know how that goes ) Drinking coffee..I turned on the TV and watched it in horror...I guess I've watched replays a thousand times...

I always watched them. Even when I was stationed in Germany, I'd find a TV or at least a radion and listen to the launches on AFN.

I had gotten out of active and was visiting my best friend from HS in Tokyo that January. Middle of the night listening to AFN on the radio once again. When I realized what had happened I tried to wake my friend, but he was to asleep to care. I sat up the rest of the night with two packs of camel straights and a bottle of Johnnie Walker Green that I'd splurged on in the duty free shop. It didn't survive the night.

Months later I found some notes I'd scribbled in that haze of tobbacco and expensive booze and started writing this:

Someday I'll finish the other two thirds (Apollo 1 & Columbia), but they're only outlines.

Those silly peaceful protesters and their whacky shenanigans are at it again...
3 men claiming to be Occupy Portland protesters arrested in Marion County for possession of explosives

When the deputy made contact with the driver, William Maxwell Patterson, 21, he reportedly smelled the odor of marijuana coming from the car.
....
Inside the car, the deputy also found a number of firecrackers and two commercially made mortars inside glass canning jars, designed to be fired into the area during professional pyrotechnic displays. One was found in the floorboard of the vehicle, and the other was allegedly in Luff's jacket.

The deputy also found two gas masks, protective eye goggles and a safety helmet. All three men told the deputy that they had spent the night at the Occupy Portland demonstration, and they brought the mortars and safety equipment to the demonstration in preparation of the expected confrontation between police and protesters Sunday morning.

(Reuters) - Former customers of Bernard Madoff's massive Ponzi scheme filed a class action lawsuit on Monday seeking to recover $19 billion from JPMorgan Chase & Co, claiming the bank willfully ignored signs of fraud.

JPMorgan was Madoff's bank for two decades. The lawsuit, filed in federal court in Manhattan, claims the bank was "thoroughly complicit" in concealing Madoff's fraud.

The lawsuit comes less than a week after a federal judge threw out a similar suit from Irving Picard, the trustee seeking money for Madoff's victims, ruling that he did not have standing to seek money from the bank. Instead, U.S. District Court Judge Colleen McMahon ruled, only victims of the scheme can pursue such claims, leading to Monday's lawsuit.

The class action lawsuit asserts that even a cursory examination of the finances of Bernard L. Madoff Investment Securities LLC would have revealed that the money was not used to follow an investment strategy but simply flowed between Madoff and his customers.

re: #174 SanFranciscoZionist

We need a change of subject. Luckily, I've got one. Gay Orthodox wedding in DC!

We could tell stories...

The nation is still recovering from a crushing recession that sent unemployment hovering above nine percent for two straight years. The president, mindful of soaring deficits, is pushing bold action to shore up the nation's balance sheet. Cloaking himself in the language of class warfare, he calls on a hostile Congress to end wasteful tax breaks for the rich. "We're going to close the unproductive tax loopholes that allow some of the truly wealthy to avoid paying their fair share," he thunders to a crowd in Georgia. Such tax loopholes, he adds, "sometimes made it possible for millionaires to pay nothing, while a bus driver was paying 10 percent of his salary – and that's crazy."

Preacherlike, the president draws the crowd into a call-and-response. "Do you think the millionaire ought to pay more in taxes than the bus driver," he demands, "or less?"

The crowd, sounding every bit like the protesters from Occupy Wall Street, roars back: "MORE!"

The year was 1985. The president was Ronald Wilson Reagan.

Seriously, isn't that what you want? You've purposefully made your message, it seems, as nasty, confrontational, and hyperbolic as possible. You're now accusing other people of endorsing rape without even batting an eye. If you're serious, it's asinine, and if you're joking, it's dumber than Dane Cook.

3 Rise of the 'plutonomy'

The income gap between the richest Americans and those in the middle- or lower-income groups is large, compared with other advanced nations, and it has been widening for several decades. This may be dampening job growth in the current recovery.

The wealthy are less likely than others to spend each new dollar of income
– and at a time like this more consumer spending is one of the most reliable ways to boost the economy and produce jobs, explains Peter Cappelli, a labor economist at the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School in Philadelphia.

Talking about the rise of a so-called plutonomy, a coinage suggesting an economy dominated by wealthy plutocrats, angers many conservatives, who dismiss it as a form of "class warfare." But it's a force worth paying attention to because the economic implications may persist for years. Indeed, one reason for the gap – growing opportunities for a "superstar" or talent elite in a knowledge economy – shows no signs of easing.

hippies definitely are at fault here

Not true, gunpowder carries it's own oxidant. These guys has prior knowledge of the potential:

Salzwedel-Kemp and Patterson described an incident that occurred when they were younger. They put a homemade "Piccolo Pete" explosive inside a beer bottle and detonated it. The resulting explosion caused a shard of glass to fly into Salswedel; lacerating his leg so badly that he required stitches to close the wound.

Esquire has a funny write-up about last night's GOP debate:

The erratic behavior broadcast erratically continued until about the 9:23 mark, at which point, smack in the middle of Rick Perry's answer about the Euro crisis, moderator Scott Pelley mumbled something about "the tyranny of the clock" and the thing just dropped like a bowling ball into a vat of oatmeal. I have seen smoother productions from the Goth kids on my local public access channel. Personally, I think Pelley just looked at his watch, said to himself, "Fk this shit," and gave up and went and got hammered in the hopes that he would not have to ask any of these Wal-Mart Torquemadas a question about torture ever again.

Bachmann: Obama Ending Iraq War Is Desecration Of American Dead

Expanding on her statements during Saturday night’s foreign policy debate, GOP presidential hopeful Michele Bachmann attacked President Obama for fully drawing down U.S. forces in Iraq, and claimed incorrectly that his war policies have left the country with a choice between releasing terrorists or killing them.

“President Obama was given a war that is won in Iraq, and he’s choosing to lose the peace,” Bachmann claimed on Meet the Press. “That’s a desecration of the memory of forty-four-hundred Americans that gave their lives to liberate Iraq.”

Obama is removing all troops from Iraq by year’s end, pursuant to an agreement between the two countries that dates back to the Bush administration. U.S. and Iraqi officials had discussed allowing a small number of troops to remain in Iraq past the deadline, but those discussions deadlocked over U.S. concerns that American troops would not be given immunity in Iraqi courts.

Bachmann also claimed that the country needs a jail for terrorists, or else we’ll be stuck with an unpleasant choice: “either we kill them or we release them.”

Someone break out the vaudeville hook and remove this twit from the national stage please.

The canning jar has a much larger mouth than a beer bottle, the mortar has a two stage design with low pressure launching charge that's likely to knock it out of the jar before the main charge detonates, so your skepticism was/is warranted. It's dangerous but without the fuse going through a punched hole in a sealed lid it's not really guaranteed to shatter effectively. Still, based on their statements these guys were clearly class-A douchebags with low intentions who deserve to serve jail time.

And in turn, just because some people at OWS are horrible people who deserve to be tried for their crimes and if found guilty sent to jail for a time determined by a jury of their peers, does not invalidate the legitimacy of the political movement.

Bachmann: America Should Be Less Socialist… Like China

Michele Bachmann thinks America blew it by extending a safety net to millions of Americans under President Johnson’s “Great Society.” Her solution? Model the economy after communist China.

“The ‘Great Society’ has not worked and it’s put us into the modern welfare state,” she said. “If you look at China, they don’t have food stamps. If you look at China, they’re in a very different situation. They save for their own retirement security…They don’t have the modern welfare state and China’s growing. And so what I would do is look at the programs that LBJ gave us with the Great Society and they’d be gone.”

Aside from the basic absurdity of crediting a country that’s still officially communist with avoiding the pitfalls of the welfare state, it’s worth noting that Bachmann’s broad condemnation of LBJ’s legislative record is in open conflict with her own political positions. She has repeatedly positioned herself as a staunch defender of Medicare, the centerpiece of the Great Society programs, and has slammed President Obama for using funds from the Medicare Advantage program to help finance the Affordable Care Act. Her critique of saving for “retirement security” also runs up against her stated support for Social Security.

284 NJDhockeyfan  Sun, Nov 13, 2011 7:32:22pm

Some Democrats refuse to back Obama

...A number of moderate Democrats like Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar and liberals like Sen. Bernie Sanders are declining to give their unqualified support for the president, saying they’re either too focused on their own races or are calling on the White House to cater to their agendas before they will offer an endorsement. Some up for reelection in red states or in swing districts fear that even showing up on stage with Obama will give their opponents an image to seize upon — much as Democrats did in 2008 when they repeatedly flashed shots of Sen. John McCain hugging President George W. Bush.

So as the president faces the dual challenges of energizing his base while wooing moderates, some Democrats in Congress are keeping their distance, with the president’s approval rating hovering in the mid-40s — and even lower in states like West Virginia, where moderate Sen. Joe Manchin is up for reelection.

Cooking with EmmmieG: How to make failcake.

First, fail to realize that having a few more things in the oven might require a bit more time to cook. Discover when removing the cake that the center is still batter.

Rationalize that only the family will see it, and end up with a wobbly "frame" of cooked cake.

Put cherry stuff on top, only to have the birthday boy help out by "spreading them out" onto the platter.

Get whipped cream out of fridge only to find that the canister is actually empty. Oops. Black Forest cake with no whipped cream.

Have son thank you for the failcake anyway. (This is only birthday cake #1, anyway. He gets #2 at his party.)

I should have taken a picture.

If you mean elected to president than it would have been sorta "meh" with his polls taking a huge down turn because what he did was INCREDIBLY un-ethical there was nothing illegal about it as best I can recall (I stand open to being corrected) so his poll numbers would have dropped, one term president, so on and so forth but he wouldn't have been impeached for it would he?

If you mean after being elected as the guy his party wanted to run for president, then his campaign would have taken a nose dive so hard democrats would be wondering if they couldn't yank him to run somebody, anybody else....

There's not even going to be a conventional attack by Israel. Israel wouldn't be taking about attacking if there really was a plan to attack any time soon.

That's not how they or anyone with any military mind would operate. It's just saber rattling or could be seen as a warning to the Iranian. Nothing's going to happen for a while if anything at all.

I highly doubt that Iran would be stupid enough to launch a nuclear attack -- if they ever become nuclear capable -- on any country because that would be suicidal for the Iranian nation.

Israel Threatens to Strike Iran Without U.S. Permission

The U.S. wants Israel to first obtain permission from Washington for any pre-emptive attack on Iran's nuclear facilities but failed to get a clear response, unnamed sources said according to U.K.'s "The Telegraph".

U.S. Defence Secretary Leon Panetta held a secret meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu last month and officials briefed on the outcome of the talks said the former delivered an urgent message from U.S. President Barack Obama. Panetta reportedly told Netanyahu that Obama is seeking Israel's guarantee that it will not strike Iran without Washington's approval.

One of the sources, who are from both Israel and the U.S., revealed that Netanyahu and Israel Defence Minister Ehud Barak did not give Panetta any hint of an attack plan nor assurance that they will not act unilaterally and seek Washington's nod first.

Nuclear genies can never truly be put back into the bottle. It's a unidirectional process. At some point, the United States (or our voters; I'm sure DOD/DOE know this quite well) is going to have to come to grips with the idea that states we don't much like will sometimes gain nuclear capability and there isn't a non-Doomsday thing we can do about it.

If they are, really, then you know this isn't.

What happened that makes you so angry and fearful of OWS? Is it just that your hopes for the Tea Party were disappointed? Or did you really get turned down by some leftist chick?

Or is it simply the neo-hippy asshat neighbors who can't be bothered to learn simple basic farming stuff like I learned growning up on a beef farm in Wisconsin? I can actually understand that, but I'll bet they aren't especially marxist or under your bed either.

Don't burn any bridges. Neither the Teabaggers or OWS are worth that.

Not alleged. I'd need something solid before I'd use a nuke. The use of an option of last resort, at least in my mind, requires that the threat existence can be proven by clear and definitive evidence.

There was far more compelling evidence of North Korea's nuclear ambitions and we never engaged in a bombing campaign. And before you say "China," Iran's on their customer list. They're also on Russia's list, which is why you'll never get agreement to bomb Iran through the Security Council.

[Link: knowyourmeme.com...]

About

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is a Canadian/American flash cartoon series, produced by Studio B Productions, based on the My Little Pony universe. It was developed for television by Lauren Faust, who also did major work on both The Powerpuff Girls and Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends. Since its on-air debut in October 2010, the series became a popular subject of threads, reaction images and image macros on 4chan.

Fans outside the show’s demographic, especially teen and adult male fans, have come to be known as “bronies”, and occasionally use ponies to derail threads. Although fans are generally known as bronies all across the internet, on 4chan, bronies who post ponies mainly on /co/ have been called “colts”.

Right, because hegemony that comes from the barrel of our guns or those of our allies is tolerable. *rolls eyes*

Hegemony is much less bad from a national interest standpoint if we are the hegemon.

One last point and then I'm going upstairs: I'm talking about nukes aimed only at those sites used by the nuclear program of Iran, not dropping the bomb on a major city, and then only as a last resort. I am not talking about simply nuking Iran out of existence.

NYT: U.S. Speeds Up Bomb Delivery for the Israelis

WASHINGTON, July 21 — The Bush administration is rushing a delivery of precision-guided bombs to Israel, which requested the expedited shipment last week after beginning its air campaign against Hezbollah targets in Lebanon, American officials said Friday.

...Pentagon and military officials declined to describe in detail the size and contents of the shipment to Israel, and they would not say whether the munitions were being shipped by cargo aircraft or some other means. But an arms-sale package approved last year provides authority for Israel to purchase from the United States as many as 100 GBU-28’s, which are 5,000-pound laser-guided bombs intended to destroy concrete bunkers. The package also provides for selling satellite-guided munitions.

An announcement in 2005 that Israel was eligible to buy the “bunker buster” weapons described the GBU-28 as “a special weapon that was developed for penetrating hardened command centers located deep underground.” The document added, “The Israeli Air Force will use these GBU-28’s on their F-15 aircraft.”

So has Obama...
Yahoo News: Obama sold Israel bunker-buster bombs

While publicly pressuring Israel to make deeper concessions to the Palestinians, President Obama has secretly authorized significant new aid to the Israeli military that includes the sale of 55 deep-penetrating bombs known as bunker busters, Newsweek has learned.

In an exclusive story to be published Monday on growing military cooperation between the two allies, U.S. and Israeli officials tell Newsweek that the GBU-28 Hard Target Penetrators—potentially useful in any future military strike against Iranian nuclear sites—were delivered to Israel in 2009, just several months after Obama took office.

Strictly speaking, GBU-28 has been in service since the '91 Gulf War. Any discussion of selling newly-developed weapons to the Israelis needs to cite a bit more carefully than referring to that top-level designation.

The mullahs and Dinnerjacket have this 12th Imam thing on their mind. They will use nukes on Israel and anywhere else they can shoot them to just to get that feller out of the well.

re: #585 wozzablog

why so srious?

Because there's so much better out there, even in childrens cartoons, and with more real 'spark' and creativity.

MLP is basically sucking the soul out of PPG and remarketing it.

Until the US bombed in Yugoslavia, no nation with a McDonalds had ever attacked another nation with a McDonalds.

Fun fact.

Israel would be so stunningly amazingly dumb to nuke Iran.

It's, like, its like mindboggling.

They wouldn't nuke Iran unless Iran nuked them first. Now Israel bombing their nuclear site with bunker busters and other bombs is another story.

I think it would be not a great idea, but it's profoundly not insane to contemplate. Unlike some other things.

Israel has been very patient with this. I bet Saudi Arabia would welcome Israel's attack on Iran.

Phineas & Ferb - best toon of the moment.

Doesn't lend itself to meme format quite as well tho

Yes, he did.

NYT: U.S. Speeds Up Bomb Delivery for the Israelis

So has Obama...
Yahoo News: Obama sold Israel bunker-buster bombs

Read it. Bush talked about it, Obama delivered. (55 of the last-generation bombs. This is the more capable one, but too heavy for anything but a B2.)

It has it's, moments, there is some good scripting, and some great asides.

Same people who did Powerpuff girls and a bunch of other cartoon network stuff

Well, Tom Friedman pointed it out in, I think "The Olive Tree and the Lexus", when it was still the case...and then, well, us, Serbia, things got hairy. It was true for about three months after the book came out.

So what? They are under tremendous threats from their neighbors and are a very close ally of us. What do you think we should do, just walk away from them?

Its 'creative team', as far as I can tell, is made up of producers. The lady behind MLP basically directly ripped off McCracken's look (from working on PPG), but managed to take all the real irony out of it, which was kind of the main point.

628 NJDhockeyfan  Sun, Nov 13, 2011 9:27:34pm

So you'd better be 'patient' with somebody that has basically made your existence possible for the last ~60 years.

They're a client state, they had better listen to us... and not kick :p

I really like that show actually :D

Adventure time is the best thing currently about tho', I'd still say.

Followed by Regular Show, but that's not really for kids at all imo (being absolutely about 2 uneducated slacker 23 year olds :D).

Forget it. People don't want to find a solution. They'd rather pick up guns and fight rather than talk through their differences. Nationalism still rules the day and in the end people often resist to do the right thing. As it stands now you can't even talk about the situation between the various countries without running into a screaming match over on unknown fact over the other. People become offended on both sides of the issue and it will continue to be this way for 100s of years to come.

re: #636 Gus 802

Forget it. People don't want to find a solution.

For many, conflict is the solution. It gives them purpose, order, glory.

And jobs. And camo patterns have become more fashion forward.
