Michele Bachmann (R-Mars): HPV Vaccine ‘Ravages’ Girls

The anti-vaccination candidate
Wingnuts • Views: 26,010

Despite the numerous scientists and medical professionals who’ve publicly let Michele Bachmann know that the HPV vaccine has been extensively studied and is not dangerous (beyond the small risks associated with all vaccines), Bachmann is still pushing her false claim that the vaccine “ravages” children: Michele Bachmann: HPV Vaccine ‘Ravages’ Girls.

Michele Bachmann is still defending her opposition to the vaccine that prevents HPV, the leading cause of cervical cancer. At a campaign event in Sheldon, Iowa on Monday night, she sympathized with a mother who believes her daughter Jessica, now 16, has been debilitated by headaches, pains and seizures brought on by the vaccine three years ago and can no longer attend school.

“Michele, on behalf of myself and a lot of other mothers that have a child that’s sick from the Gardasil vaccine, I would like to thank you for the attention that you brought to it,” Julie Wepple said, according to the Des Moines Register.

Bachmann thanked Wepple for bringing up the vaccine issue. “Parents have to make that decision for their kids because it isn’t the schools that are going to follow up with Jessica,” she said. “It isn’t the schools that live with Jessica every day. It’s Jessica who’s having to have her body live with the ravages of this vaccine.”

Bachmann no longer has the excuse of ignorance for promoting this fear-mongering rubbish. She’s doing it because her advisers believe it plays well to the GOP base. The cynicism is remarkable; Bachmann will put the health of American children at risk for a few more votes.

Measles ravages girls.

Polio ravages girls.

Smallpox used to.

That is, if ravages means what I think it means. I wouldn't know--I'm not Vizzini.

Michele Bachmann and her husband should migrate to Nigeria or Sudan and become clerics. They, like them, also happen to believe homosexuality is an "evil disease".

Interesting because the only candidate she gains traction on with this issue is Perry who is a dead man walking anyway.

Cervical cancer ravages women... but that's OK cuz they were dirty sluts anyway and probably murdered their children...

I bet if they came up with a Gay Vaccine, regardless of any terrible side effects, Bachmann would be the first to mandate that for all school age kids.

And her advisers should know that she's putting some children's health at risk for a few votes in a losing cause. Irresponsible and pointless.

I would be surprised if there were that many people whose opinions will change over this. What I mean by that is that people who like Bachmann were probably already against the vaccine. People who were for the vaccine probably are not likely to vote Bachmann*.

The issue is if she becomes president, which isn't highly likely.

Instead of nipping this virus before it can change and halt its spread among men and women. CDC has an outstanding website. I'm curious did the mother of the teenager with chronic headaches and seizures actually consult a doctor or a specialist?

Why not? The GOP field is putting the health of the entire planet at risk by denying global warming.

Can we let the politicians stick to politicking and the scientists stick to doing things that actually matter?

I'm not really sure where that leaves Michelle.

OT...Breaking: DC police arrest shooter

Great news!

Update at 1:55 p.m.: The Secret Service says a man has been arrested on suspicion of firing a bullet at the White House.

"On Wednesday afternoon at approximately 12:35 p.m. EST, based on information generated by Secret Service agents from the Pittsburgh Field Office, Pennsylvania State Police Troop A located and arrested Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Herndandez at a hotel near Indiana, Pennsylvania," said a statement from Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan.

"Ortega-Hernandez is currently in the custody of the Pennsylvania State Police," Donovan added.

She'll need a strong showing in Iowa. If she can't win in her childhood home state, she won't be able to afford to keep running.

Of course not! She won't dare consult a doctor! They HATE her because she has discovered a wrinkle trick/weight loss tip/brighter whiter teeth making the medical profession FURIOUS for revealing their secret!

re: #18 Charles

Indeed.

To a remarkable degree, the candidates have turned the cringe-inducing moments to their advantage, asserting that they demonstrate an authenticity different from the slick professionalism of politicians in Washington.

But the embarrassing moments are piling up, and some veteran Republicans are beginning to wonder whether the cumulative effect weakens the party brand, especially in foreign policy and national security, where Republicans have typically dominated Democrats.

“It is an ‘Animal House.’ It’s a food fight,” said Kenneth Duberstein, a chief of staff to President Ronald Reagan. “Honestly, the Republican debates have become a reality show. People have to be perceived as being capable of governing this country, of being the leader of the free world.”

Even before his “oops” moment in one of the debates last week, Gov. Rick Perry of Texas stumbled his way through an answer about Pakistan and nuclear weapons. Representative Michele Bachmann of Minnesota has offered a series of historical goofs. And after mistakenly saying China does not have nuclear weapons, Herman Cain on Monday painfully gave an answer to a question about Libya in which he all but acknowledged having little grasp of the military actions that took place there.

Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, said he was confident that the eventual nominee would enhance, rather than diminish, the party’s reputation for seriousness. But he acknowledged that not every candidate had demonstrated that quality.

“No one expects a person who hasn’t been commander in chief before to know everything about every topic. But Libya? Iran?” Mr. Graham said. “I think it’s fair to ask our candidates to articulate a position that makes us safe.”

Arrested in Indiana, PA. His family had reported him missing on Oct 31, and there appears to be a discrepancy as to why he was released after police questioned him (other reports noted that the police had no reason to detain him, but took photos). Did they know that there was a missing persons bulletin out on him?

My problem isn't so much the gaffes, it's how they act about the gaffes. Cain in particularly acts like any questions of his knowledge or there lack of on foreign policy are "gotcha questions." I think it's fair to expect a prospective CoC to know foreign policy. Republicans can make 57 states jokes all they want but there's a difference between that and what many of these candidates do and guys in the establishment seem to get that.

Making some headway on my paper...

Creationists have not been convinced or assuaged by any means, however. Many Christians sincerely believe that Darwin’s notion that impersonal and mechanistic natural forces have resulted in humanity is utterly incompatible with their interpretation of scripture and tradition where a loving, personal God created Man in His own image. The popular bumper sticker that says: “God said it. I believe it. That settles it!” is an accurate description of the feelings of many people who find no comfort or meaning in science no matter how well researched or voluminous the evidence. Judge Braswell Dean of Atlanta, Georgia, proclaimed “This monkey mythology of Darwin is the cause of permissiveness, promiscuity, pills, prophylactics, perversions, abortions, pornography, pollution, poisoning, and proliferation of crimes of all types.” This reflects the widespread view that “Darwinism” (a term peculiar in use to American social and religious conservatives) is equivalent to atheism and therefore is corrosive to the moral and social order of America.
In reply to the perceived forces of secular science, many conservative Christians have organized through their churches, listened to lectures form purported “Creation Scientists” and fought for control of textbook review boards and local school boards. Using these means to control schools and textbooks is vital to Creationist Christians who are convinced that science has substituted a utilitarian, mechanistic history of the world in place of their conviction that Mankind was created in Gods’ image and needs Gods’ grace for sin. By restoring Creationism its rightful place in school instruction, Creationists feel they can also restore America to her rightful place with God.

Interesting that my footnote numbers do not transfer over.

Parents seem all too quick to blame the vaccine and Big Pharama. Then again they believe word of mouth, celebrities, and seek out the wrong information rather than consult a professional who might know what's wrong with their child.

Yes, the gaffes are bad enough - and can be overcome with better prep and having good people around them, but the campaigns bring out what people innately understand to be character and judgement.

These GOP candidates are sorely lacking in both. In fact, they're laughably lacking (and some like Perry are laughing at their own incompetence as a way to stick around a little bit longer).

Bachmann and her ilk view the HPV vaccine as an evil that allows teens to be sexually promiscuous. (I suppose they think sexually active kids deserve whatever disease they get and if they're going to die, they'd best do it and decrease the surplus population.)

Well, the mothers were vaccinated, weren't they? Huh? Huh?

Also, this news will just lead to innocent babies who might or might not have autism being aborted, which is the only reason doctors came up with this dubious idea.

//I can't remember how to do the purple script.

44 Ming  Wed, Nov 16, 2011 11:41:59am

Just to point out the obvious, Michele Bachmann got knocked down in the polls MONTHS AGO for mouthing off about the HPV vaccine. What united many commentators against her was the damage her comments can do to children: any parent who took Bachmann's comments seriously might decide not to have their child vaccinated.

Even given the behavior of fanatics, it is remarkable (to me) that Bachmann would now do exactly the same thing as she did months ago, when it was made very clear, on national television, that comments like hers could ENDANGER CHILDREN. Yet months later, now, she goes ahead and makes pretty much the same comments, without a care in the world that she might be putting kids in real medical danger.

45 HappyWarrior  Wed, Nov 16, 2011 11:43:53am

Bachmann's new book apparently has her calling G.W Bush a socialist. Irony of ironies would be Michele meeting a real socialist and liking them. Kind of like Geller, calls this administration Communists but defending Yugoslavi war criminals who were members of an actual communist party.

Cervical cancer also ravages girls. Ask my neighbors down the street, who lost their 15-year-old daughter to cervical cancer. I bet they'd be happy to have her with "headaches, pains and seizures" if they could just have her back. Maybe it will take the death of someone Bachmann loves to this disease (although not to wish it on anyone) before Bachmann gets her head out of her ass.
