Fox News Commenters Spew Racial Slurs at President Obama (Again)

“The eggplant president”
Wingnuts • Views: 28,910

In Australia, President Obama mentioned that America’s educational system needs improvement and that we’re falling behind in science and math; predictably, this led to yet another outburst of deranged right wing commentary about Obama “bad-mouthing the US.” For example, in this article at Fox Nation: Obama Bad-Mouths US to Aussie Teens.

It’s the usual nonsense, of course; there’s nothing even remotely controversial about Obama’s statement, when the United States ranks 21st in science and 35th in math, world-wide. It’s just a fact … but then, the right wing has demonstrated an amazing resistance to facts.

Meanwhile, the Fox News audience responds to this story with racist comments and threats against the President, many of which get high positive ratings from other readers. For example:

Can anyone tell me of one single trip this bogus fool has taken where he has not dis respected America and insulted our traditions.
I am sure I will get the same answer as when I asked anyone to tell me one place in the world where masses of people were being slaughtered that the mooz lims were not involved

This is a powerful story for them because it treads on American Exceptionalism as well as being another story about President Obama.

Eggplant is a racial slur mainly used by Italians.

The troglodytes at Fox Nation use it not because they're Italian, but to get around the word filters. They seem to get a real thrill out of sneaking racist comments past the moderators.

Clarence Thomas is the laziest legal thinker I've had the displeasure of reading this semester. I have to say as a liberal, while I disagree with what most of Antonin Scalia stands for, I respect that he's a student of the law who has real passion for it. I got a law school friend, also a huge liberal who has to read decisions all the time that Scalia's are by far more enjoyable than Thomas and Alito's. I don't get your reference. What did I miss? I'm multitasking at work.

I skimmed through the dissent. the gist seems to be this

When interpreting a constitutional provision, “the goal is to discern the most likely public understanding of [that] provision at the time it was adopted.” McDonald v. Chicago , 561 U. S. ___, ___ (2010) (slip op., at 25) ( Thomas, J. , concurring in part and concurring in judgment). Because the Constitution is a written instrument, “its meaning does not alter.” McIntyre v. Ohio Elections Comm’n , 514 U. S. 334, 359 (1995) ( Thomas, J. , concurring in judgment) (internal quotation marks omitted). “That which it meant when adopted, it means now.” Ibid. (internal quotation marks omitted).

As originally understood, the First Amendment ’s protection against laws “abridging the freedom of speech” did not extend to all speech. “There are certain well-defined and narrowly limited classes of speech, the prevention and punishment of which have never been thought to raise any Constitutional problem.” Chaplinsky v. New Hampshire , 315 U. S. 568, 571–572 (1942) ; see also United States v. Stevens , 559 U. S. ___, ___ (2010) (slip op., at 5–6). Laws regulating such speech do not “abridg[e] the freedom of speech” because such speech is understood to fall outside “the freedom of speech.” See Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition , 535 U. S. 234, 245–246 (2002) .

re: #116 Rightwingconspirator

If you want to understand how bad the Thomas dissent is, you just need this footnote from Scalia from the SCOTUS opinion:

JUSTICE THOMAS ignores the holding of Erznoznik, and denies that persons under 18 have any constitutional right to speak or be spoken to without their parents’ consent. He cites no case, state or federal, supporting this view, and to our knowledge there is none. Most of his dissent is devoted to the proposition that parents have traditionally had the power to control what their children hear and say. This is true enough. And it perhaps follows from this that the state has the power to enforce parental prohibitions—to require, for example, that the promoters of a rock concert exclude those minors whose parents have advised the promoters that their children are forbidden to attend. But it does not follow that the state has the power to prevent children from hearing or saying anything without their parents’ prior consent.

I've gotta thank Thanos for making a page out of the Pat Toomey tax plan. It's absolutely disgusting.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Millions of taxpayers who take advantage of deductions for mortgage interest, charitable donations and state and local taxes would be targeted for potential tax hikes under a GOP plan to raise taxes by $290 billion over the next decade to help reduce the nation's deficit.

Some workers could also see their employer-provided health benefits taxed for the first time, though aides cautioned that the proposal is still fluid.

The plan by Sen. Pat Toomey, R-Pa., who serves on the 12-member debt supercommittee, would raise revenue by limiting the tax breaks enjoyed by people who itemize their deductions, in exchange for lower overall tax rates for families at every income level. Taxpayers who already take the standard deduction instead of itemizing - about two-thirds of filers - could see tax cuts. The one-third of taxpayers who itemize their deductions might find themselves paying more.

The top income tax rate would fall from 35 percent to 28 percent, and the bottom rate would drop from 10 percent to 8 percent. The rates between would be reduced as well.

Where the hell are all those jobs that the superrich have supposedly been creating these past 8 years with their tax cuts?

It just makes me want to scream.

Perhaps he has nothing to lose either. He is a public figure and his reasons are his own. If any group that needed a proper leader, he seems to be the right candidate. The OWS needs to be better organized with an elected leader to give focus and direction along with a committee of elected officials to set agendas. Like any other organization. The populous vote works with smaller groups but this group has potential like any group that formed behind a common cause to have real political clout. It's a long shot considering the make of OWS and there are already too many groups that would like to subvert them for their own purposes due to OWS broad demographic. A new name would help as well.

“They complained about the park being dirty,” he said over the OWS Livefeed last night. “Here they are worrying about dirty parks when people are starving to death, where people are freezing, where people are sleeping in subways and they’re concerned about a dirty park. That’s obnoxious, it’s arrogant, it’s ignorant, it’s disgusting.”

And I expect he'd find you celebrating Tony Bologna's macing of the women rather repellent:

You should, by law, only use force to protect someone’s life or to protect them from being bodily injured. If you’re not protecting somebody’s life or protecting them from bodily injury, there’s no need to use force. And the number one thing that they always have in their favor that they seldom use is negotiation–continue to talk, and talk and talk to people. You have nothing to lose by that. This bullrush–what happened last night is totally uncalled for when they did not use negotiation long enough.

Over 200 arrests during protests across US

At least 177 people were arrested in New York. Some were bloodied during the arrests.

One man was taken into custody for throwing liquid, possibly vinegar, into the faces of several police officers, authorities said.

Many demonstrators were carrying vinegar as an antidote for pepper spray.

A police officer needed 20 stitches on his hand after he was hit with a piece of thrown glass, police said.

If what they're trying to do is block the traffic, then that's dumb. I have no idea why any protester ever thought that tying up bridge traffic was somehow a good way to make a point. We've all been stuck in traffic on bridges, it sucks, and willfully doing that to other people just seems mean.

What is gained by it?

It seems to be the theme of the day. They're trying to shut down freeways and bridges in Seattle and Portland too.

So what do you think of his view that people, like yourself, who were worrying about the dirtiness of the park? Again, what he said was "That’s obnoxious, it’s arrogant, it’s ignorant, it’s disgusting.”

And what were the two women who were maced doing that lacked grace and dignity?

I wasn't saying you were calling it a great strategy. But I've never had anyone actually give an explanation at all, and I wondered if you'd ever heard one. I mean, okay, I heard someone said that it gains attention, but OWS is already obsessively covered by every media outlet, so that's hardly a good rationale in this case.

Authorities say Townsend began planning to bomb a bank about two months ago after ordering explosive chemicals. He decided earlier this week to instead use Molotov cocktails.

Authorities say Townsend called police immediately before throwing the first Molotov cocktail, which failed to ignite. A second one bounced off a window and ignited a bush, which Townsend extinguished by dousing it with gasoline.

So - thanks for the definition. So my usage was very precisse.

Here's my take.

(1) You are assuming the injured cops had honorable intentions.
(2) You are unconcerned about unjustified injuries to any OWS protestors.
(3) You have an anti-OWS agenda, and feel that injured cops "vindicates" your perspective.

Now I could be generalizing a bit - but earlier today it was explained to us that if someone puts themselves in a position to get injured, whether they were doing something directly that resulted in their injury, it is to be expected. It's the risk they take, and thus unconcerning.

Look - I'm not saying that you're glad that cops got injured. I'll leave such ridiculous arguments for the hippie-obsessed.

I'm saying that you're more than happy to exploit the injuries to cops for partisan purposes.

We could be talking about what types of civil disobedience are justifiable. We could be talking, as some have tried, about the wisdom of blocking city streets as a form of protest. We could be talking about what kind of police response is most appropriate. We could even be talking about whether the violent element of OWS is characteristic of the group in some significant way.

The fact that the hippie-obsessed have expressed no real interest in such dialog is what reveals the exploitative nature of their focus on injured cops, crime in a park in Oakland, etc.

Yeesh.

There are thousands of peaceful protests in this country each year. Yes. I assume that when, as multiple videos appear to show, protesters (not doing their job) don't follow the instructions of police (doing their job) and police get injured, then someone injured the police.

If there were protestor injuries but no police injuries, we'd reasonably wonder if there may have been some questionable police conduct. But...it's sorta hard to injure police unless you're...fighting police. And I find that inexcusable, regardless of the person or place, in the modern US.

This isn't rocket science. You're ignoring more plain fact than the average creationist.

I would inspire OWS to begin to focus like a laser on Pat Toomey and his disgusting new proposal to raise taxes on middle class homeowners in exchange for a huge tax cut for the wealthy.

And I would inspire them to ask exactly where all the jobs are that these "job creators" have created with their previous tax cuts?

Why keep giving them big tax cuts when it is quite obvious they haven't helped the economy of the United States?

Confronted by two topless young women taking part in the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York today, several police officers responded by whipping out their own tools of the trade -- nightsticks.

In a fracas that typified the tense atmosphere across lower Manhattan, the women were roughly pushed around the sidewalk along Broadway in front of famed Trinity Church, while some protesters were knocked down, said two people involved in the incident. Put another way, boobs were met with batons.

There were other reports of police violence Thursday amid crowds that some media outlets put in the thousands. Some of these altercations, such as the one above, seemed unprovoked. Others appeared touched off in part by protesters removing barricades erected to control the demonstrations. But in both cases the level of violence suggested, at best, indiscipline by individual cops and at worst official license to cause bodily harm.

Why keep giving them big tax cuts when it is quite obvious they haven't helped the economy of the United States?

agreed...I'd like answer regarding GE...millionaire farm subsidies....where the stimulus money went, and who the hell answers for it....I'd like to see names published, incomes, secret deals cut with the feds....there is a ton to discuss if people want to

Jeez. Political season is here. I got robocalled by Newt Gingrich, of all things.

I think I need a shower.

So did I. I asked him what he advised Freddie Mac to do when he was consulting for them. He was surprisingly mum on the topic...

Ironically, I posted a video praising the excop who was arrested without violence and praised his class and dignity. Outrage still ensues. Not much I can do about that.

re: #306 albusteve

what do you think the OWS protests should do next?...if you could inspire movement, where would it go and what might it accomplish?

excellent question

the first goal has been accomplished, that is, a significant portion of the young people of america are fed up with privileges and bailouts for the wealthy and the back of the hand for everybody else. the young people of american have stood up and been heard

the best idea yet i've heard to come out of the movement is free market economic action, primarily so far in the suggestion that people take their money out of big banks and put it into socially responsible banks or credit unions. so far from being communist or anarchist, this is a free market protest that any teabagger ought to be able to endorse

beyond that, it's only been a couple of months yet, and the protests are doing an excellent job of taking command of the public stage and amplifying the dissatisfaction felt all over the country about the bailouts and too much money influence in politics. this is not a solution or agenda, but on the other hand it's not insignificant or worthless, either

this is an ancient problem and this is merely another manifestation of age old discontent that crops up over and over again

keep in mind that the american revolution, the abolition of slavery, and the civil rights movement didn't spring full formed from the brow of some genius one day - they all took years of meandering before things crystallized, for better or for worse

for the rest of their lives, the thousands and thousands of americans now in their late teens and early twenties will remember this time as The Month We Stood Up And Made Our Voices Heard Around The World

wow

It's only been two months so it's bound to grow and change over the next few, especially out in CA where the weather is milder. I just hope they go occupy the voting booth in November.

in no way do I disregard the premise or the potential of the WS thing, not that you imply that...my gut feelings for DC is well documented and I just feel that this scattered energy could be focused on congress and burn people...and, as you say, the polls are the best weapon, but the most difficult to wield

327 Talking Point Detective  Thu, Nov 17, 2011 4:58:44pm

re: #309 Aceofwhat?

The facts are that you have little to no information on what the cops who got injured were doing when they got injured. There have been numerous reports about questionable police conduct, but you aren't interested in evaluating their veracity.

Cops were injured when fighting with protesters in the civil rights movement also. That's why it's relevant to discuss the context - in all respects. But you're not interested in doing that. You're interested in using cops' injuries to advance your agenda.

I would offer that saying I don't know what exploitative means, and suggesting that I'm "ignoring" plain facts does improve your argument - but only because it was pathetic to begin with.

Not in the least. In between ridiculing Killgore, I've had some reasonable dialog about OWS.

re: #312 Aceofwhat?

Quite. Because I am mystified about how violence is supposed to highlight socioeconomic issues in this country.

i've been to several meetings and marches

the violence issue is peripheral in reality, but front and center in news reports. teevee as reality, this is the american way

do you mean to assert that OWS intends to foment violence?

These are real issues that will resonate with voters, IMHO. I find it extremely discouraging that neither political party seems interested in asking these specific questions. All they do is stand around shouting talking points at each other and finding new ways to squeeze the middle class.

I got hit by a FEMA rezoning...my house (which has never flooded, ever) just got put into a high risk flood zone because it's close to a creek. The feds just plucked 20 grand (or more) in property value out of my pocket, in addition to the $1500 a year I'm now going to have to pay in flood insurance.

And if they nix the mortgage interest deduction also? Bastards.

Except for the rare post that exploits an ex-cop whose view on OWS is largely opposed to his views.

I didn't dump on the TP for a long time. I recognize that there are many things wrong with the way the government works, and it most definitely doesn't represent the average citizen. Sadly the TP allowed itself to become the voice of the Koch brothers and xenophobic creeps. It's really a shame...

I am still hoping OWS can make people ask real questions and doesn't devolve into just another ANSWER and [Link: WWW...] show. The jury is obviously still out.

337 Daniel Ballard  Thu, Nov 17, 2011 5:13:05pm

Some live Occupy news
As I was walking on 5th street a few blocks from the occupied BofA, saw a bunch of paramedic vans (at least 6) heading that way on 5th under police escort, as in high speed escort. One of them is the big EMS truck we usually see at a mass casualty event.

I get home and dial up livestream and I see live reports of lots of arrests. Lots of cops with beanbag guns have been deployed. My speculation is LAPD is gearing up to mass arrest the rally at BofA. I truly hope the medical resources are just an excess of caution.

re-election means everything, govt is a business where you can go in broke like a rookie, and emerge a friggin veteran millionaire...all on the dime of the average guy...if it's not directly pilfered from taxes, it's graft, and grease, and lobby kickbacks....all at consumers expense....one aspect that burns me the most, is that we have to pay for this shit, all of it

That happened to us in 2004. The entire borough fought it (all of 257 people) and we did get our $$ back from the force pay flood insurance the mortgage holder charged us. It is possible to get your individual property certified as not in the flood zone. A surveyor or a competent realtor should be able to point you in the right direction.

342 funky chicken  Thu, Nov 17, 2011 6:01:59pm

re: #341 LadyBehir

Really? You appealed and won? We saw the $1500 fee for filing the appeal and figured we'd pass on letting them rob of us more money.

343 LadyBehir  Thu, Nov 17, 2011 6:24:14pm

The borough did it for us - I'll have to ask how at the next council meeting. And if you're paying that much for the insurance every year, it seems like the appeal fee is worth it. I hadn't heard of any appeal fee before, though. If your house is truly above the flood elevation, you should be able to get an Elevation Certificate. It's OMB No. 1660-0008. I don't know who fills that out, though. Here's some links:

So you're not supposed to question him.

Even though even a fifth grader could have been right about the tea party after a week. But nevermind that because you just shut up!
