Herman Cain Receives Secret Service Protection - From Journalists

Danger! Media approaching!
Wingnuts • Views: 21,382

Heman Cain’s campaign has announced that he requested Secret Service protection yesterday — protection from journalists.

Cain spokesman J.D. Gordon said Thursday night that the campaign asked for the protection after The Washington Post posted an article online that morning detailing a series of physical skirmishes involving journalists at Cain rallies. …

Gordon would not say how many Secret Service agents would be positioned with Cain, but the spokesman said the coverage began Thursday night in New York, where Cain taped an interview on the “Late Show with David Letterman.”

On the campaign trail, Cain “draws anywhere from a dozen to 50 media at his events,” Gordon said. “When he gets out at a rally or a campaign stop, it has been increasingly common for media to be physically putting themselves and others in danger by trying to follow him with a lot of heavy equipment and cameras in close quarters like we saw yesterday.”

Comedy that writes itself, and it’s yet another unforced error. All he had to say was that Cain had received threats, but instead Cain’s spokesman had to blather about the danger from cameras.

Well, we’re all going to feel pretty dumb if a reporter drops a camera on his foot now.

“…it has been increasingly common for media to be physically putting the candidate at risk and my salary in danger by trying to follow him with a lot of heavy, reader-ish questions.”

Here’s a funny line from the recent New York Times Magazine article about Cain:

Cain likes to tell his audience that “the voice of the people is more powerful than the voice of the media.” In fact, he likes to tell them this right after dropping everything for a television interview with Mike Huckabee.

6 Surabaya Stew  Fri, Nov 18, 2011 10:32:31am

So instead of hiring a couple of private security guards out of his own campaign funds, Cain has to suck off of the Government’s teat to push away a few pushy journalists?

And he’s a former CEO! No wonder I doubt any businessman who says they did it all themselves, without government assistance.

What I’m realizing that financial success in America is possible without Uncle Sam’s help….but its a lot easier if you have it! Self made man my ass….

Cain Gets Secret Service Protection After Threats

It’s not clear whether a specific incident triggered Cain’s request, but an official with knowledge of the situation says there have been threats, and police reports show that his campaign has received at least one threatening phone call.

In early June, Cain’s campaign office in Stockbridge, Ga., reported receiving a call from someone claiming to be a member of the Ku Klux Klan. According to a written statement Cain’s administrative assistant gave to police, the man said “there’s no such thing as a black Republican,” and that Cain should not run for the White House.

The caller did not explicitly threaten violence, but local police alerted the FBI and the Secret Service.

Isn’t it true that at some point in their campaign, any candidate from the major Parties can ask for Secret Service protection? I remember Obama received SS protection fairly early on because of the historical nature of his campaign, that he was (quite obviously) a target for assassins. I guess anyone running for President becomes an assassin target at some point should they be seen as having any outside chances of winning.

9 makeitstop  Fri, Nov 18, 2011 10:33:32am

I can only imagine how Cain would run the White House if he were to win the presidency. My guess is that a Cain administration would make Nixon’s look like the very picture of transparency.

But maybe a Secret Service detail is a good idea. Reading some news reports this week, Cain’s bodyguards were edging up to physical assault on reporters, and that would not be good for anyone.

Evidently Republicans REALLY fear facts/the truth. They just want to stay in their little echo chamber where nobody gives a shit about any of that.

11 NJDhockeyfan  Fri, Nov 18, 2011 10:34:46am

I think there’s a little more to the story than that.

WASHINGTON (AP) - Herman Cain has reportedly been receiving threats, and now he’s the first Republican presidential contender to get Secret Service protection.

That’s enough for Secret Service protection, not being scared of the press.

Exactly! That is what I mean. I do not like Herman Cain in any way at all - his 9-9-9 is not serious, he is a hater, he has no foreign policy knowledge, etc. But it is not a stretch to realize that because he is black, and he is sitting near the top of the GOP (gulp!), I imagine there is no shortage of KKK affiliates who might want to kill him.

16 allegro  Fri, Nov 18, 2011 10:36:56am

I’ve run across a few people who feel they are so special and entitled to royal treatment as a matter of course, but man, Cain is blowing all of them outa the water with his schtick. It seems as though he totally believes it, too:

Don’t speak to him unless specifically instructed to. I’m assuming at that point you best tell him what he wants to hear or out ya go.

He feels he has the right to grope/molest women, make unwelcome sexual comments, etc. They should feel honored by his attention, no doubt.

Protect him from the reporters who are harassing him just because he is running for POTUS. How DARE they!

This dude don’t wanna be President. He feels he’s entitled to be King. What a jackass.

This:

… is not a threat.

It’s not unusual for candidates to get Secret Service protection, but to announce that it’s because of danger from journalists is sheer comedy.

21 wilburs  Fri, Nov 18, 2011 10:39:05am

It’s pretty easy to understand how Herman Cain would function as president, after all he is a businessman.

I guess he would start by closing the under performing locations….so goodbye Mississippi, Oklahoma and Florida.

There may be real threats he doesn’t want to discuss.

“The liberal media is out to get me,” will not bother his boosters.

“I’m getting threats telling me I’m going to be killed because a black man has no business running for President” may make them defensive.

31 Charles Johnson  Fri, Nov 18, 2011 10:44:14am

I contacted the FBI after receiving a much more explicit death threat, and was brushed off with the explanation that unless there’s a direct intent to commit violence, there’s nothing they will do.

I’m not a presidential candidate, of course, and the bar is lower there. Sure, he may have received real threats. But his campaign announced the reason for the protection, not me.

The little robot, created by Randy Sarafan, the community manager at Instructables and author of the book 62 Projects to Make With a Dead Computer (we’ve covered his book previously), comes complete with a protest sign and a bullhorn to make its displeasure known.

Randy took a standard-issue toy/hobbyist-grade robot, a megaphone, an audio-out cable, and various other components to create the ultimate in protesting bots. In fact, robots may be better at protesting than humans are—at least until their batteries die. As Randy puts it:

“Robots obviously have many advantages over their human counterparts. For instance, robots never get tired, they don’t get cold, they don’t sleep, nor eat, don’t require tents, and when armed insurrection becomes necessary, robots are much more morally ambivalent. Additionally, we had a discussion with an unnamed member of the San Francisco police force and they confided in us that the police currently do not have any plan for dealing with robotic occupiers.”

Heh.

Which is a sort of terrifying thing to say, when it comes to ‘qualifications for the GOP nomination’. You’d sort of think that was the FIRST requirement.

The debates have sorted out the GOP race. The no-nothings are sliding into oblivion, while what passes for the GOP intellectual elite, Romney, Gingrich and Paul, are rising to the top. If Gingrich doesn’t implode again like he did last summer, I think the race will come down to between him and Romney, with Paul drawing considerable TP support.

As far as I’m concerned, the entire republican field seems to be nuts. I acknowledge I could be wrong though. I do think we’re seeing a gradual redefinition of what it takes to be president. Post 2012 (or maybe 2016) an enterprising political science grad students could write a very good thesis on how Americans no longer seem to value establishment credentials highly when electing presidents.

I am quite happy to see Newt as the front runner, because maybe he will be finally exposed for the con artist he is.

He has 50 positions on every issue, depending on which way the wind is blowing that day. There is no one quicker to jump on the latest trend or buzz word then Newt.

On day some wingnut yells out “drill, baby, drill” at some rally, and the next day Newt has his Drill Baby Drill organization and is out collecting bribes donations from oil companies.

The reason why they issued this ridiculous statement about dangerous journalists is pretty obvious, too. They’ve been hurt by reports that Cain’s security people are roughing up journalists, so they’re lamely trying to push back by claiming that these journalists are endangering Cain, and throwing some red meat to the anti-media right wing base at the same time.

I doubt it’s that well thought out. He can’t speak about specific threats so he probably just made something up.

He needs to steel himself more. Still, nobody is denying he’s got the brass ones. Maybe there’s a silver lining here; if he goes for the gold, he might show himself to be a man of iron. Most likely, though, it’ll all go down like a lead balloon.

Sheesh, I think Maddow may be on to something when she says that this is all performance art by Cain.

Record Year For Abortion Restrictions

While recent federal attempts to impede women’s access to safe, legal abortions have failed to pass the Senate, at the state and local level, 2011 has seen far more new restrictions placed on reproductive rights than in any previous year. Here are some of the laws now on the books:

The Social Engineering Provision (Connecticut): Abortions are available only when the woman is facing dire risks such as being mousy, husky, or flat-chested

Maximization of Pathos Act (California): After a termination procedure, clinicians must gaze into the patient’s eyes and say, “It was a boy”

Fair Warning Act (Vermont): Prior to procedure, headphones placed over the patient’s abdomen must blare the sound of a 90-decibel Klaxon horn

The You Monster Act (South Carolina): Requires clinic workers to call a patient a monster at least five times before performing abortion

Second Thoughts Relocation Act (North Carolina): Abortions can only be provided by a physician holding an Elmo-themed first-birthday cake and must be performed in the middle of an open, active day-care center

The Guterman Act (North Dakota): Abortions are still granted, but only if the woman agrees not to laugh at anything for two years following the procedure

Scratch Statute (Georgia): State lottery to issue new “Termination Madness” instant scratch-off game giving participants a 1-in-100,000 chance of winning a free abortion

Public Notification Act (Mississippi): Any woman who receives an abortion must place a sign in vehicle that reads “Baby on board? Nope. Why not? I’ll give you one guess. That’s right. I aborted the fetus I was carrying”

The Phillips Waiting Period (Wisconsin): Anyone seeking an abortion must wait three days after initial consultation, during which Dale Phillips (R-Kenosha) stares at her the whole time

I don’t think any independently wealthy guy whose main goal is to slash the size of the federal government should then turn around and request very expensive government protection. Cain can certainly afford to hire highly competent protection for himself if he really feels he needs it.

Or how about the taxpayers give him a $10,000 voucher that he can use to contract with whichever private firm he feels will best serve his needs.

California Woman Caught Trying to Sell Stolen Purse Back to Victim

MILLBRAE, Calif. – A Californian woman has been picked up by police after trying to sell a $1,400 purse back to the person it was stolen off — her next-door neighbor.

The victim found the purse being offered for sale on the internet soon after it, and a pair of shoes, were taken from the doorstep of her apartment building in San Jose, the San Mateo County Times reported Monday.

She arranged to meet the seller in the city of Millbrae and called police.
Elizabeth Kidd, the victim’s neighbor, was later arrested trying to sell the stolen goods — telling police someone had given them to her.

California Woman Caught Trying to Sell Stolen Purse Back to Victim

Friend of mine got her house broken into, years ago. She was living in the SF projects.

Days later, she caught some kid out on the street, selling her blues collection. She grabbed the tapes, told him a few things, and walked off.

Some years after that, there was a burglary at Mission Dolores, and among other things, they got the framed class photos off the walls.

These were being sold a garage sale when Father happened by. Similar results, but this time in clericals. Father simply gathered up the stolen property and swept off with it, declining to pay five bucks per picture.
