Andy's Sgt. Pepper album is incredible. The whole thing is just three instruments, bass, drums, guitar, and no overdubs, and he does every song on the Beatles album, with all the parts you're used to hearing. Amazing.

I am eyeballing that it is Romney and Huntsman both.
Also, there is the question of who's hosting it. If it's someone traditionally hostile to Mormons, they might choose to sit it out rather than walked into a stacked game.

Another GOP investigation totally fails to find voter fraud:
GOP New Mexico Sec of State Finds Tiny Fraction Of The Voter Fraud She Alleged
New Mexico Secretary of State Dianna Duran said earlier this year that her state had a “culture of corruption” and referred 64,000 voter registration records to police that she thought were possible cases of voter fraud. Now a new report from her office proves she was completely right, 0.0296875 percent of the time.
Duran’s interim report now alleges that 104 voters — about one for every 10,577 on the rolls — were illegally registered to vote. Of that group, just 19 — or approximately one for every 57,894 registered voters — actually allegedly cast a ballot they shouldn’t have.

I was talking about Obdi's reference to Republicans trying to suppress students voting in general, Steve. They fought hard an attempt to get a precinct on campus. The powers that be here in this state going back to the Byrd Organization years have always wanted as low turn out as possible for those who don't share their values. can't find him....his original grave at Ft Sumner was washed away in a flood, so now he rests in 4 different places....they say
but we do have a very colorful history down here, politics certainly not excluded...just a generation ago, people claimed to know the Kid, or saw him, that sort of thing...he's still a hero down here and believe me, these goofs take that stuff seriously....time moves real slow across the NM mesas

Hacker Group Attacks Cop, Claims Solidarity With Occupy Wall Street
Hackers affiliated with the groups Antisec and Anonymous said Friday that they were releasing over 38,000 private emails belonging to Fred Baclagan, a former Special Agent Supervisor of the California Department of Justice who oversaw computer crime investigations.
In a notice published on Pastebin.com, they wrote that they had hijacked two of the investigator's gmail accounts. The released emails include "detailed computer forensics techniques, investigation protocols as well as highly embarrassing personal information," they said in the release.
...
"The information in these emails will prove essential to those who want to protect themselves from the techniques and procedures cyber crime investigators use to build cases."Unlike earlier hacks by the group, this one comes at a time when talk of police brutality and abuse is happening all over the Internet. In its notice, the group drew on the rhetoric of Occupy Wall Street: "You want to keep mass arresting and brutalizing the 99%? We'll have to keep owning your boxes and torrenting your mail spools, plastering your personal information all over teh [sic] internets."

I used to work for a company that had great holiday parties.
It was about the only thing I liked about the insurance business. There would be masses of great food, and all the brokers would get drunk and talk about things other brokers had done in the past while drunk. (This is the origin of the story about the guy who parked his complimentary Cadillac between two other cars so tightly that the mirror came off, while drunk and too cheap to pay for parking.)

The GOP is making no attempt to realistically raise any new tax revenue. Their latest offer was $200 spending cuts to $1 of taxes.
It was probably doomed to failure from the start. The members from each party chosen for the supercommitttee are hardly close to the center, especially the Republicans (who no longer really have much of a center anyway). And the two parties are as polarized as they've been in a century, if not longer. Virtually no ideological overlap between Dems and GOPers.
When you take tax hikes and military spending off the table, your toolbox for fixing massive deficits is basically empty.

Speaking of gov't spending, the NASA budget for 2012 has been signed:
NASA's Budget for 2012 Is Set--Worry About 2013 Budget Begins
It's done. The U.S. President has signed the Appropriations bill for NASA's fiscal year 2012 budget. The fight on the FY12 budget is over. The top line budget for NASA is $17.8 billion. While this is $648 million less than last year's level and $924 below what the President requested for FY12, it is far better than the $16.8 billion proposed earlier this year by the House of Representatives.
There are winners (James Webb Space Telescope, Space Launch System, Multipurpose Crew Vehicle), casualties (Commercial Crew, Space Technology), and those who slipped only a little (Planetary Science, Earth Science.)

Media Can Avoid NYPD Arrest By Getting Press Pass They Can’t Get
Stu Loeser, a spokesman for New York City’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg, says the best way for reporters to avoid being arrested while covering Occupy Wall Street is to carry a press pass issued by the New York Police Department. [UPDATE: Loeser says that's not what he meant. Details below.]
But the NYPD isn’t issuing press passes to reporters covering Occupy Wall Street, as we learned when we contacted them Thursday.
“We aren’t issuing press credentials to reporters covering Occupy Wall Street,” said Detective Gina Sarubbi, NYPD’s Deputy Commissioner of Public Information.
...
But Detective Sarubbi said that even if the NYPD were issuing press passes to cover the protests, there are no appointments available to get a press pass before January 2012.
...
Loeser called Wired after this story ran to say that Sarubbi is exactly right. He disputed that his Tweets and his memo diminishing the arrests of journalists by pointing out only a few had NYPD-issued passes imply that reporters covering Occupy Wall Street should get credentials from the police.
“Anybody can go into Zuccotti park and write a story,” Loeser said.
...
Wired has been trying to get NYPD press credentials for freelancer Quinn Norton, who is on special assignment to cover the Occupy movement. Even before this week’s arrests, the NYPD made it clear they would not issue her credentials, as she first had to comply with Kafka-esque rules, such as proving she’d already covered six on-the-spot events in New York City — events that you would actually need a press pass to cover.
When I asked if six stories on Occupy Wall Street would count, Sarubbi said no.

In 2009, 1,470 households reported income of more than $1 million but paid no federal income tax on it, through their use of various tax loopholes and shelters. I admit it seems a little slanted. Until you factor in the really low number of American born white players in the NBA. The league is about 75% black. Of the roughly 25% white NBAers, many (if not most) of the best are foreign born--Nowitzki, Ginobili, Nash, et al.

One of the weirder things about Manute was that he took quite a few 3-pointers for such a big man. Had a really weird shot--kinda from behind his right ear like Jamaal Wilkes back in the 80s. He was good at it only in a relative sense: better than other guys his size.
One of my favorite all-time photos is Jordan being guarded by Muggsy. Even more extreme, Shawn Bradley. Tough assignments.

True, but the NBA itself is in dire straights, since the season is now in jeopardy.
What the NBA could use is some form of revenue sharing. I know, it's socialistic. But it also keeps the NFL from having the kind of labor disputes and payroll disparities that plague MLB, NBA, NHL. All three of those leagues have missed significant numbers of games (including a WS and Stanley Cup) over the last decade or so. The NFL hasn't "missed" a game since 1987 (when the replacement players came in for a laugh), and that dispute was resolved after only 3 weeks.

Here's another one you might like. Tall and short.
The Bradley photo is priceless. I have a pretty odd shot myself. Hard to describe. One of those, have to see it to believe it things. I always was unorthodox though- sidearm pitcher before I was forced to switch and I'm told I throw a football odd too.

Your throwing motion can't be any worse than Tim Tebow's. I'm still astonished he's 4-1 as a starter this season. But he's definitely got some intagibles that compensate for his lack of conventional pro passing skills.

Are you describing yourself? If so, you've got a lot in common with Tebow.
I'm now pulling for Tebow. Not just because he's on my fantasy team, where he inexplicably puts up good totals despite looking awful on so many series in each game. But also because his style is unique in the NFL--it's a throwback to the 60s NFL in a lot of ways. How effective it can be in the long run is still a big IF though.

I read this with some interest this morning. It also mentions the Thanksgiving Family Forum:
How Iowa’s Social Conservatives Lost Their Influence
This weekend’s “Thanksgiving Family Forum” at a Des Moines megachurch probably seemed like a great idea to Iowa social conservatives when it was first developed. You’d have the presidential candidates arrayed around a “Thanksgiving table,” obediently waiting for a symbolic serving of activist support. In the pews would be thousands of stolid Iowans of the sort most likely to show up at the January 3 caucuses. Wielding the microphone would be focus-group king Frank Luntz, probing the worldviews of the candidates to determine their fidelity to a teavangelical, big-God, small-government creed. And at the head of the table, in spirit at least, would be Iowa right-wing kingmaker Bob Vander Plaats, ready to crown one of the candidates as the Mike Huckabee of 2012.
It could still play out that way, of course, but the political context surrounding the Thanksgiving Family Forum, cosponsored by Vander Plaats’ FAMiLY Leader group, the National Organization for Marriage, and Focus on the Family’s CitizenLink affiliate, suggests the effort to unite Christian Right voters around a single candidate in Iowa could prove too little and too late. [...]
I hope they're right about waning influence.

He's got a tough end to the season, though. The Broncos division rivals the Chargers and Chief should be won, and Denver should also beat Minnesota. Mitt Romney, either because he’s not terribly bright or because he’s hoping voters aren’t terribly bright, launched a new attack based on Obama’s comments. As the Republican presidential candidate sees it, the president “said that Americans are lazy.” That’s not true, but Romney isn’t exactly fact-oriented. The former governor added that Obama says “disparaging things about Americans.”As it turns out, there is a presidential candidate who’s argued that Americans “avoid the hard work” that’s needed for the country to get ahead. The candidate is Mitt Romney, who put the argument in his book:
“We have been accustomed to being the world’s leading nation for so long, enjoying the freedom, security, and prosperity that comes with that leadership, that we have tended to avoid the hard work that overcoming challenges requires.”
So, as Romney sees it, Americans have grown so complacent, we’ve become slothful.

Yeah, Tebow's lucky that his team is in a mediocre division that no team seems to want to win. SD, OAK, KC--none of them dominant, so his Broncos have a decent chance to squeeze through.
I'm not exactly sold on Tebow, but he's better than I expected. A very good runner, if he was only a halfway decent passer he'd be a pretty good QB overall. But so far he seems really limited as a passer. And he didn't really have much success against the Jets until that last drive. When he needs to do more I think he'll be exposed. Then again, he's 4-1, so...

The problem is that against a strong defense like the Bears a quarterback has to be able to throw well. As the Bears have proven 4 times against Michael Vick, the Chicago defense eats running QB's for lunch, especially ace linebackers Brian Urlacher (#54) and Lance Briggs (#55). And with #53 Nick Roach proving a highly capable third linebacker, Tim Tebow will be very hard pressed to find rushing success against Chicago.
New England's defense is very badly depleted, and Tebow can be expected to do well against the Patriots. But Tom Brady can be expected to do even better against Denver's defense. Thus the second team the Broncos have yet to paly that I think they will lose to.

The Broncos might end up 9-7 and win their division--probably their best case scenario. Tebow's only real chance against a good D is something like last night: a low scoring game where he only needs to lead his team to one or two scores. I just don't see him sustaining multiple drives over the course of a game against the better defenses. Last night the Broncos won--with only 229 yards of total offense. That formula probably won't work long term.

Student protesters just faced off with UC Davis campus police on the Quad. At approximately 3:30 p.m., police officers marched to the protesters. From the stories that I've found on it so far, the students had set up tents there three days ago and were told to remove them by 3:00pm today and vacate (although the mayor only stipulated that they couldn't camp there). The students did comply by packing up all camping equipment, but remained in the quad. That's when the police came in and started pepper-spraying.
One person was injured badly enough by the chemical burns that she had to be hospitalized.
MSNBC has picked up on the story now, as well.

re: #246 RadicalModerate
From the stories that I've found on it so far, the students had set up tents there three days ago and were told to remove them by 3:00pm today and vacate (although the mayor only stipulated that they couldn't camp there). The students did comply by packing up all camping equipment, but remained in the quad. That's when the police came in and started pepper-spraying.
One person was injured badly enough by the chemical burns that she had to be hospitalized.MSNBC has picked up on the story now, as well.

I don't go to UC Davis obviously but I'd assume the police have no authority to force them to leave the Quad.

Santorum: Americans Should Suffer
During a town hall meeting in Ottumwa, Iowa Friday afternoon, Rick Santorum argued that Americans receive too many government benefits and ought to “suffer” in the Christian tradition. If “you’re lower income, you can qualify for Medicaid, you can qualify for food stamps, you can qualify for housing assistance,” Santorum complained, before adding, “suffering is part of life and it’s not a bad thing, it is an essential thing in life.” However, almost all states have curtailed their aid programs, just as the economic downturn is expanding the pool of eligible applicants.
Fuck you Frothy.

For a man who calls himself a Catholic, Santorum sure has a very Calvinist way of looking at the poor and hungry. And yeah fuck him for saying this while he and his family live a nice life.

253 | BishopX Fri, Nov 18, 2011 10:26:55pm |
So I just watched the entire video, and I have a couple observations.
-The police are really, really outnumbered. I counted 20 odd officers in the video, call it an even 30. There were at least 200 protestors.
-The police have no perimeter, there is a loose crowd of officers up until the protesters start getting in their face, at which point they bunch up into a defensive ball as they walk out of the park. Because the police officers aren't holding a perimeter they can't easily concentrate force where they need it, they have to deal with who ever gets in their face...not a good thing. Also because they don't have the perimeter they don't have a clear escape route if things go south. Getting surrounded by a mob is not a good thing.
-The police are carrying the wrong weapons. The paintball guns the police are carrying aren't good for close quarters, they create a cloud of irritant when they balls burst, which means that if your standing near your target you're just as likely to be effected as your target. Not to mention the fact that you can easily kill someone at the ranges shown in that video.
After watching it again I think a big part of the disproportionate use of force is fear. If the police officers allowed the confrontation to escalate they could have been in a really bad place.

Suffering is a part of life. It can make you a better, strong person in some cases, and if you chose that path.
For someone who is rich to tell people that, though, is insensitive at best.
At the beginning of the recession, we had two families that had gone through extended periods of unemployment earlier asked to talk about what it was like and how they got through, mostly I think to show us we could survive.

Yeah, I think I speak for a lot of Americans when I say "You first, asshole."
Honestly, how does the GOP expect this "holier than thou" attitude to help them next year. They think it comes off as "tough love," but what it really boils down to is a bunch of rich and powerful pricks talking down to the very people whose lives have been ruined by the banks and businesses which are bankrolling the elections.

Santorum is probably the least "rich" of the lot. Two are scions of wealthy families, two have made money on the lecture circuit, one has worked a variety of very well paying jobs, one is well greased from the payola of the Texas oil industry, and one has (with her husband) worked the federal and state programs teats for some time.
Santorum is just another lawyer (whose father happened to work for the government (VA)), and was probably paid well by Vince McMahon when the latter was trying to dodge the 'roid scandal.

What a jackass. While he sits there in comfort he'd do well to remember that any one of us (and the family that depends on us) is just a catastrophic illness, accident, or natural disaster away from being desperately in need of help. I guaran-damn-tee you if his wife & children were in need of food or a roof over their heads he'd find suffering a lot less fucking noble. Prick.

re: #259 ggt
Is he part of the 1%?
Probably. However, I don't see "the 1%" as being particularly evil. After all, what is the difference between someone who on the (wealth) scale is at the 99.1 percentile and someone who is on the 98.9 percentile?
What we do have in this country is a collapse of the center of the distribution, with many of them moving downward (in actual buying power.) The so called "middle class" (and I don't like these types of terms) is discovering that the rules are not the same for everyone, and that indeed could motivate some political change.
However, I have yet to see any sort of leader rise up and present these issues clearly. So far it's a nattering of activists and talking heads, and a few old politicians in the Democratic party who now find that they possibly could be back in vogue for the first time in decades. Heck, if Jerry Brown can become governor again at his age, maybe the old warriors from the War of Poverty can find new life?
Maybe not. So, where are the 40-something national level politicians who will articulate clearly the needs of the majority of the country, and do it so well that they can lead the change that must happen in the politics at the state level as well as at the national level?

I'm not sure he actually believes what he says he believes. People who spout such rhetoric, to me, seem to be trying to convince themselves more than others.
I don't think being in the 1% makes a person evil in the least. What it does make them is disconnected from the rest of us. 99.1 and 99.8 seem to be defined on the curve. The difference could be millions or billions.

One of the things that first told me that I was going to like New York better than I might have at first thought was that they use the phrase "momentarily" correctly on the subway announcements.
As in "Ladies and gentleman, due to congestion ahead we are being momentarily held and will be on our way soon" and NOT "we are being held and will momentarily be on our way".

This bit from the story confused me:
Earlier today Houston County Sheriff Andy Hughes and Deputy Rick Clemmons encountered the suspect in a vehicle chase near Ashford. The subject was on a motorcycle and was able to elude the officers. Later the suspect was reported to have knocked on a door. When no one answered he found a farm truck with the keys in it and stole the truck.
Were the people home, but didn't answer the door? If they weren't home, how did anyone know that he knocked on the door?

Our KY chickens were highly-developed egglayers, and less than marginal value as meat. After a couple I just didn't bother killing them. As a pre-schooler I had the job of holding a farmer's chickens on a stump, just like the cartoons. Had to chase more than one headless hen around the property. If a restaurant is open and serving food, someone in the restaurant has to have a manager certifikit or else they can close the place on the spot. When I was a boy, we lost a cow after she'd given birth to a calf in the dead of winter. We named the calf "Orphan Annie" and put her in Granny's basement until Spring.
Annie, while still a dumb cow, thought she was a people (the way my Granny used to say it). And would approach children and nuzzle her head against them.
When a fifteen hundred pound cow "nuzzles" a child, it normally includes a momentary defying the law of gravity and the child flies. Many entire family conversations were centered around "Annie".

As trivial as it is, I always like the custom of thanking the animal for its meat. It's a total anthropomorphizing ritual that's easy to make fun of, but I think it does ask people to realize that a sacrifice has occurred.
My ultra-survivalist friend (who I hadn't thought of in awhile, just corresponded with, and got an adorable photo of him and his daughter working on constructing a tepee together) every time he kills an animal while hunting, says something along the lines of "Thank you for your meat and your hide. I promise to make use of every part of you I can. I tried to give you the best death that I could." And then he does. He doesn't throw away the hide, nor the bones, nor nearly anything, but makes what use he can of it all.

The incident in Texas is also unproven, with the hacker just having stated he penetrated-- and that he did so not in order to cause any harm, but to raise awareness of the problem. I agree. And he only uses traps that provide a quick death, not ones that simply catch the animal until they starve to death. He finds those unbelievably inhumane. He points out that the natural world rarely provides a good death for an animal; most succumb to disease, injury, starvation, or the predation of another animal-- and that by 'ethical' hunting or trapping you can actually give an animal a better death than they'd otherwise face.

No, dude. Look back at the thread. Here's what happened:
1. A report released by a state fusion center and obtained by a "security expert' claimed that the Springfield, Ill city water system was hacked and a pump destroyed.
2. The Springfield, Ill city water utility denies this.
3. DHS and the FBI say they're investigating.
4. Someone speculates it might be Curran-Gardner Public Water District. They don't comment.
5. The hackers there are speculated to be Russian in origin, but details are hazy.
6. A hacker, the proF guy you're talking about, claims to have penetrated an entirely different system, down in Texas, for the purpose of demonstrating the vulnerability. He does no damage, specifically stating he is not a vandal, nor does he reveal the vulnerability of the system.
So, the hacker of the utility down in Texas has nothing at all to do with the original hack from the Russian IPs-- if that one actually did occur, which is still unverified. And the hacker down in Texas, who is the Anon type you identify, explicitly states he's an ethical hacker who does not do vandalism.

Here's a CNet article on the incident: Was U.S. water utility hacked last week?
Update 3:42 p.m. PT November 18: An official at Curran-Gardner Townships Public Water District near Springfield, Illinois, told The State Journal-Register newspaper that the incident occurred at their water facility. "Whether the burnout of that pump was related to this what might or might not have been a hacking, we don't know," Don Craven, a water district trustee, is quoted as saying.

re: #367 Sergey Romanov
If the attack is unverified, whence the talk of the "Russian IPs"? Or was there an access but there is a question whether it's related to any damage?
It's unknown how much of this is circular confirmation, but:
The Department of Homeland Security's Industrial Control System-Cyber Emergency Response Team, when queried by reporters, revealed that a utility company in Springfield, Illinois was hacked.
And:
The details beyond that are hazy. As Wired pointed out, one of Springfield's water utility companies is City Water, Light and Power. A spokeswoman at the company denied that an incident had occurred there, and suggested that it may have happened to systems managed by another utility company, Curran-Gardner Public Water District. Curran-Gardner refused to comment.
The Illinois Statewide Terrorism and Intelligence Center released a "Public Water District Cyber Intrusion" report on November 10 that indicates that hackers may have had access to the system since September. Hackers using Russian IP addresses hacked the software vendor that makes the system. They were then able to access the vendor's database of usernames and passwords, and used the stolen credentials for remote access to the SCADA system's network. These vendors keep records of their customer's access information for maintenance and upgrading the systems.
So, I don't know if these two centers are keying off each other's reports in order to release this info, or not. Assuming that there is a credible original report, then it appears Russian or Russian-appearing hackers compromised a software vendor and then used that to access the system, which had a side effect, intentional or unintentional, of burning out a pump.
There is no reason to believe we know anything about these hackers, other than that they used Russian IP addresses, from any of these reports.
370 | Obdicut Sat, Nov 19, 2011 6:10:52am |
re: #368 Killgore Trout
Interesting:
The water utility had noticed minor glitches in the remote access to the SCADA system for two to three months before it was identified as a cyber attack, Weiss said. This is similar to the 2000 hacking (PDF) in Queensland, Australia, in which a wastewater treatment plant failed to notice dozens of attempts to access the system. Using wireless radio and stolen control software, a consultant on the project who was angry over not getting a job was eventually able to get in and release up to one million liters of sewage into the river and coastal areas, killing marine life and turning a creek black.
So, it's this Weiss dude, who's an 'industry provocateur', who wants people to take hacking more seriously, who's the main guy making the claim that the damage occurred and was hacking related.
And this has occurred before, as far back as 2000, and it was a disgruntled employee who did it.

I thought that was interesting too. That's why I like outlets like CNet on stuff like this. MSM reporting on stuff like this always gets a bit questionable because the reporters and editors don't have much of an understanding of the culture, technology or terminology. This get confused. As to the "industry provocateur" label, it's entirely possible the guy is trying to sell his services to utility companies. It'll be interesting to see how this pans out.

Norway Cyber Attack Targets Country's Oil, Gas Systems
Norway's National Security Authority (NSM) on Friday confirmed that systems associated with the country's oil, gas, and energy sectors were hit with a cyber attack, resulting in a loss of sensitive information.
"I can confirm that the Norwegian National Security Authority has revealed a computer espionage operation especially targeted towards businesses within the oil and gas sector, the energy sector and military industry," Kjetil Berg Veire, head of information at the NSM, said in an email.
In a translated statement, NSM said that the virus spread via malware-infected emails that were sent to "selected individuals in large Norwegian companies." Once the viruses were unleashed, they would steal information from the computer, like documents, industrial drawings, users names, and passwords.

Well, no, since they explicitly stated their reasons and they have nothing to do with helping the military beef up security. And white hat people don't release sensitive data, they just notify about the existence of a security hole. At most, Wikileaks is 'grey hat'.
I wouldn't venture a guess either way given the information available.
But you did. You not only ventured a guess, you said that the original attack was a hack by Anonymous.

A story with two parts:
Pt 1.
Mr Harmon, a disabled USAF vet hung a large flag on his local apartment complex door. When he left it up for a few days after Veteran's Day a neighbor or two complained to the apartment manager, who insisted it be taken down. It violates the complex's "outdoor signage" provision.
Pt. 2
"The biggest show of support, though, began Friday and was scheduled to last through Saturday. James Cunningham, who served in the Army for eight years, organized a protest for those days near the apartment.
At about the time the protest started, a high-ranking official from Sun Belt Management visited Harmon and told him the company supports America and apologized for the incident.
(The official) Beaver, a World War II veteran, later contacted media outlets and issued an apology, as well.
“I am 85 years old, a World War II veteran, and I still cry when the national anthem is played,” he said. “As far as I am concerned, (Harmon) can fly 10 flags outside his apartment.”
Beaver said government-subsidized housing has certain regulations regarding ornamentation, and the apartment manager made “a bad mistake” in thinking the American flag would be included in that description."

Killgore -
You could be making some good coin:
Lobbying firm's memo spells out plan to undermine Occupy Wall Street
By Jonathan Larsen and Ken Olshansky, MSNBC TVA well-known Washington lobbying firm with links to the financial industry has proposed an $850,000 plan to take on Occupy Wall Street and politicians who might express sympathy for the protests, according to a memo obtained by the MSNBC program “Up w/ Chris Hayes.”
The proposal was written on the letterhead of the lobbying firm Clark Lytle Geduldig & Cranford and addressed to one of CLGC’s clients, the American Bankers Association.
CLGC’s memo proposes that the ABA pay CLGC $850,000 to conduct “opposition research” on Occupy Wall Street in order to construct “negative narratives” about the protests and allied politicians. The memo also asserts that Democratic victories in 2012 would be detrimental for Wall Street and targets specific races in which it says Wall Street would benefit by electing Republicans instead.

"OWS is a very new phenomenon. In it's current formation, there are some real problems. In due time, they may address some of those problems and become more successful. Foreign hackers hit public water system
Meanwhile, a hacker has told the tech website CNET he hacked into a South Houston water utility to show it can easily be done, after officials downplayed the Illinois cyber attack.
The hacker, using the alias ''pr0f'', said he has hacked other SCADA systems, too.
Then he provided screenshots of what looked like diagrams of water and waste water treatment facilities in South Houston, Texas.
Asked how he broke into systems, pr0f said: ''As for how I did it, it's usually a combination of poor configuration of services, bad password choice and no restrictions on who can access the interfaces.''
He admits to hacking into various utilities and cites the one in Huston specifically.

Yesterday you were talking of 2 "attacks" (as if they were similar) and wrote that prof was taking a credit for "the attack", without distinguishing between the 2 events. I can find that comment, if necessary.
In a way a hacking can be said to be an "attack", if one wants to describe it in a hostile way, but it's not the same as actually damaging the pump.

Clearly there's a hacking problem in the USA! We have no choice but to create the Federal Cyber Command Agency at a cost of 1 zillion dollars a year and close down mpg and movie sharing websites at the same time while felonizing said crimes. Cost of agency to include new prisons.

Ok, that explains it. I was using the terms "hack" and "attack" interchangeably. There was no malicious intent and shouldn't be a source of outrageous outrage and wild accusations. Sorry, but still squabble:
A) There is no reason at all to believe the people involved are the same.
B) The attack in Illinois involved the hack of a seperate entity, stealing their passwords, etc. and then using that authentication to hack the water system. What pr0f did he described as "This required almost no skill and could be reproduced by a two year old with a basic knowledge of Simatic." So there is also no reason to believe that the same techniques were used.
I'm pretty sure we're more or less in agreement here, it shouldn't be and endless squabble.
More or less, I guess, as long as you get the main point that there is no particular reason to believe any hack of an industrial system is by Anon just because Anon said that they'd like to hack industrial systems at some point.

I agree. I took issue with much of the reaction to the Tea Party - for example, I said that characterizing them as "prot-Nazis" was bogus at a number of levels, but even there, I will be more circumspect in how I approach issues by virtue of how some folks are reacting to OWS.

Obviously OWS causes conflict along ideological divides, but the issues at the heart of the controversy aren't really any different from the issues that we debate on any other topic here, and the same things that attract people like me to here in the first place.
To whit, the issue is validity of opinion based on interpretation of the factual material, and sifting of facts from speculation to form a reality-based conclusion. It's no different than how this blog approaches anything, from US politics to global warming to statistics to Israel to media. If you have an opinion or make a claim, back it up, source it, explain your interpretation of said sources, and be prepared to defend and/or discuss. It's the same with every issue. And as with any other issue, if your opinion does not hold up to scrutiny, or if you are overtly antisocial in expressing it, there is backlash. Typically, those who are called out for poorly thought out ideologies or opinions either amend their stance or back away, but when they push forward regardless - well, then we have any thread with Buck in it, and, more recently, every thread that goes to the topic of OWS.

That's a good post. I try to always steer clear from criticizing an individual even if I'm criticizing that person's post. It even goes to the level of trying to avoid saying things like "that's stupid."
I often edit any such language out before I post - but I also fail to do so at times. I should clarify that I know absolutely nothing about Killgore at a personal level. I see no reason not to believe that he's a fine fellow. That said, his posts on OWS seem to have been based on an incoherent reasoning process, and he has continuously decline to address explaining the reasoning process that lies behind posting comments such as that people are "supporting" rapes and stabbings. IMO, his posts have seemed disingenuous and he hasn't shown accountability for his posts. His claim that people were simply going after him because he doesn't support OWS is a perfect case in point.
I assume that we all post things that are disingenuous at times, and that we all fail to show accountability at times for our posts. It doesn't mean that we can, necessarily, be characterized overall as disingenuous or someone who fails to be accountable for questions of greater importance than rhetoric in a blog comment.

Agreed, That's why I just gave up yesterday. It seems most of the endless squabbling and accusations of smears is much more related to my not supporting OWS rather than the given topic of the moment. It becomes a pointless conversation at that point.
Lol!
When have you sees anyone at LGF trying to get you, personally, to "support OWS"? Who do you think cares about that?

This bit of news made me raise an eyebrow. From Wikipedia.
Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Russia sign a cooperation agreement, setting a target of establishing the Eurasian Union by 2015.

Hey PLL - do you know a lot about Armenia? I have reason to be studying up on it lately. It's very interesting.

I don't think anyone here gives a shit if you support OWS or not.
Being more than just a useful idiot concern troll about it would be enough.

Thank you Charles. I just wasted 3 hours on Youtube. I don't think I can live without any of his stuff. So you just made me blow um,, well I haven't totaled it up yet. But I'm sure it'll be more than I intended to spend on Music for the rest of the year. I hope my daughter doesn't mind listening to this instead of more her Disney music...
