A Family Fanaticfest
Politics • Views: 21,709

The Republican candidates are performing another debate-like charade today in Iowa, hosted by the extreme religious right group Family Leader.

It's an attempt to both get tough on foreign aid--no more just sending foreign aid all over for no reason!--and not upset an audience that doesn't like foreign aid, but does like support for Israel.

It makes no sense, really, but the implication is that somehow we'll save billions upon trillions by not just randomly writing checks to other countries.

Can't let that pass.
All religious beliefs are "funny" to me, but modern Mormon beliefs make much more sense to me than the mainstream Christian beliefs. E.g., the eternal universe; the post-mortem chance of a degree of repentance; the idea that people who weren't bad but weren't Mormon either will still get their degree of celestial glory.

Pretty soon "chemical abortion" will even refer to the all the drugs which may have a negative effect on sperm production and/or function:

Ketoconazole (an anti-fungal)
Sulfasalazine (for inflammatory bowel disease)
Spironolactone (an anti-hypertensive)
Calcium Channel Blockers (anti- hypertensives)
Allopurinol, Colchicine (for gout)
Antibiotics: Nitrofuran, Erythromycin, Gentamicin
Methotrexate (cancer, psoriasis, arthritis)
Cimetidine (for ulcers or reflux)

Santorum’s campaign pledge to repeal the ACA is the opposite of support for people with disabilities. “When you talk about valuing people with disabilities, is there a policy behind that?” asks Lara Schwartz, spokesperson for AAPD. “Most people with disabilities don’t have a dad who is a former senator. For them medical care, long-term care and education are potentially bank-breaking issues. Santorum should make sure everyone has the opportunities his daughter does.”

Wow. They'd have a cow if someone made fun of their religion.

If someone mocked, e.g. the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, they would all--including those whose sects do not believe in the Assumption--band together to make the mocker unelectable. Bullying is only attempted when the bullies believe the victim cannot fight back effectively.

Since Romney certainly has a reply prepared for the polygamy issue, they have to raise it in his absence.

Since Romney certainly has a reply prepared for the polygamy issue, they have to raise it in his absence.

Why should Mitt have to say anything about polygamy? The official Mormon church banned it over a hundred years ago, and the only time the issue comes up in the modern setting is with marginal nutbar groups like the FLDS.

I have no direct knowledge of the plumbing fixtures in Perry's childhood home, but I do know that his father was a country commissioner and member of the school board. These are not jobs that would typically go to the handful of fringe dwellers who still lacked modern plumbing in 1950s Texas.

I ran across an interesting tidbit that tells me exactly when and where I first crossed paths with Rick Perry:

Perry has said that his interest in politics probably began in November 1961, when his father took him to the funeral of U.S. Representative Sam Rayburn (D-TX),

I was there, too. As I've mentioned before, Mr. Rayburn was my great-great uncle. I don't remember Perry, of course. It was a huge public event, with thousands attending. I was 12 at the time, he was 10, which is a big difference at that stage of life. He was probably one of the many annoying little kids whose parents brought them to the funeral.

Bachmann calls for "educational choice" so fundamentalist parents have the best possible chance of teaching their children creationism.

"Educational choice" is already here. There are plenty of private schools that parents can choose, and there are many homeschool curriculum companies that provide materials to families who chose to pay for them.

What Bachmann is asking for is for parents to get government funding for religious indoctrination of children.

How is that fiscally conservative, or representative of rugged individualism? Has Herman Cain told people to blame themselves if they can't afford private schools for their kids?

No, no, no, you don't get it.

Americans expecting their government to shell out to provide good public schools is shameless socialism.

Americans expecting their government to foot the bill for private schools that teach a weird and extreme version of their faith is meritorious, as long as that faith is Christianity, and they're not Mormons.

I have no way of knowing for sure, but I have to say that their ability to effortlessly switch from pious tears to vicious attacks without batting an eye—not to mention the apparent relish with which they launch them—puts their sincerity seriously in doubt AFAIC.

Anyway, fine, whatever. However, any American who listens to these people at any length and can't see that they don't simply want to be free to practice their own faith the way they see fit, they want to cram their version of The Truth™ down everyone else's throat is a flaming idiot that needs to pull their head out of their ass unless they want to wake up one day and find themselves living in Christianistan.

Yep, you pretty much hit the nail on the head. He started off with some bizarre comment about how much older their antiques are than ours, then talked about the 1000-year war between radical Islam and the West, and how we won 'cause our culture was so superior, but now teh oil, etc.

In high school, I had a friend who had to give an oral report on the history of the Middle East. Bachmann: Congress can limit what cases courts hear.

Seriously?

Yes, to some extent, but IMHO Bachmann is overreaching.

Wikipedia quotes the Constitution on jurisdiction stripping:

Congress may not strip the U.S. Supreme Court of jurisdiction over those cases that fall under the Court's original jurisdiction defined in the U.S. Constitution, and instead Congress can only limit the appellate jurisdiction of the Court.[8] According to the Constitution, the Supreme Court has original jurisdiction in, "all Cases affecting Ambassadors, other public Ministers and Consuls, and those in which a State shall be Party...."

Sound like a reasonable set-up. But the passage continues:

This last state-shall-be-a-party language does not mean that the U.S. Supreme Court has original jurisdiction merely because a state is a plaintiff or defendant, even if a provision of the U.S. Constitution is at issue; instead, the controversy must be between two or more states, or between a state and citizens of another state, or between a state and foreigners.[9][10]

This presumably is what Bachmann is relying on, but it makes no sense to me in terms of the quoted Constitutional text. I found the references impenetrable to a quick look. Perhaps someone who is trained in law can speak up.

Additionally, in 1892, the Court decided that it has original jurisdiction in cases between a state and the United States.[11]

This sounds correct to me and invalidates Bachmann's presumed argument. (If a Congress took exception to this assertion of jurisdiction, there would be a lollapalooza of a Constitutional crisis--especially if the Congress were supported by the President.)

Gingrich is above practical politics.

A self-described "ideas man," Gingrich is the author of 23 books. Weekly Standard Senior Editor Andrew Ferguson has a helpful summary of his oeuvre. The takeaways: Gingrich is fond of saying that the United States is at a crossroads and that technology will lead us away from catastrophe. His earlier books are filled with rapid-fire streams of ideas for bettering society, often without details about how to implement them.

"Gingrich's vagueness was always a problem," wrote Ferguson. "But the books show something more: a near-total lack of interest in the political implementation of his grand ideas—a lack of interest, finally, in politics at its most mundane and consequential level."

As the New York Times details, Gingrich has pushed to reinvent himself in part by putting a new emphasis on faith. He recently told supporters that he believes America is becoming too secular. Gingrich converted to Catholicism after marrying his third wife, Callista, in 2000. In a 2009 Weekly Standard opinion piece co-authored with Callista, Gingrich wrote that religion was key to the triumph of the capitalist West in the Cold War. In his words, "the spiritual nature of man and the freedom to know God were central to defining humanity and decisive in defeating tyranny."

Top Republican Is Doubtful Deficit Panel Deal Can Be Reached

The second-ranking Senate Republican declared Saturday that the work of a special Congressional committee on deficit reduction was all but over, and said that efforts to strike a bipartisan deal had been worthy but unavailing.

s he emerged from his office in the Capitol, Senator Jon Kyl of Arizona, a member of the panel, spoke of the committee in the past tense, using sober words to describe a seemingly unsuccessful 10-week quest for a compromise.

Gone were the histrionics, the talking points and the posturing that as late as Friday had characterized reports of secret negotiations among committee members.

Asked to describe the focus of a possible compromise, Mr. Kyl said, “I’m not sure there is one.”

Speaking of Godwin and all things extremist.

EDL splinter groups may target public sector strikers, unions warn

Britain's biggest unions are warning of a threat of violence by far-right groups during national strike action this month, amid concern that fascist elements are increasingly intent on targeting striking public sector workers.

Unite, Unison and the TUC said they were taking the prospect of disruption by far-right supporters seriously, and had begun to liaise with police to assess any risk to pickets or those on protest marches. The development follows signs that splinter groups from the English Defence League are broadening their campaign from targeting Muslims to trade unionists and socialist organisations. Members of the EDL have recently been involved in attacks on anti-racist and anti-cuts protesters, as well as attempting to target the Occupy movement which has camped outside St Paul's Cathedral.

More than two million workers are expected to walk out on 30 November during a day of protest against public sector pension changes...

This just came out of Burma/Myanmar

Aung San Suu Kyi's National League for Democracy (flag pictured), banned in Burma since May 2010, announces that it will re-register as a political party.

That, along with the fact that a planned hydroelectric plant between the previous junta and the PRC was put on hole after the people objected, gives me hope that something special is going on.

China is somewhat worried. It seems, now that the people of Burma/Myanmar have been listened to (to a point at least) , the Burmese want nothing to do with the PRC.

To be honest, these idiots don't think about the Americans fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan much either. My husband flies airplanes that were built in the 1960s in combat situations. Nobody has any plan to replace them, even though Japan, S. Korea, Australia, and GB have replaced their analogues...with American-made Boeings, to boot.

GWB didn't do one damn thing to upgrade our military hardware. Just like he didn't do one damn thing to upgrade our infrastructure. They are very similar issues, actually. As long as we have people flying 45 year old planes in combat, defense cuts shouldn't be on the table. Get our people out of Afghanistan, then we can talk defense cuts.

Honestly, this whole revisionist WWII history thing is one of my biggest pet peeves. The Soviet Union, for all its faults, threw millions of its men into a meat grinder defending itself against the Nazis. They don't deserve to be consigned to a footnote in history.

The scale of the fighting on the Eastern Front dwarfs anything else in the history of warfare. The Battle of Kursk alone was bigger than most wars. Not to diss our veterans, but the Western Front was a sideshow in comparison.

re: #625 ProLifeLiberal

The Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker is an aerial refueling military aircraft. It and the Boeing 707 airliner were developed from the Boeing 367-80 prototype. The KC-135 was the US Air Force's first jet-powered refueling tanker and replaced the KC-97 Stratotanker. The Stratotanker was initially tasked to refuel strategic bombers, but was used extensively in the Vietnam War and later conflicts such as Operation Desert Storm to extend the range and endurance of US tactical fighters and bombers.
Serving with the United States Air Force (USAF) since 1957, it is one of just six military fixed-wing aircraft with over 50 years of continuous service with its original operator. The KC-135 is supplemented by the larger KC-10. Despite increased maintenance costs, studies conclude many of the aircraft could be flown until 2040. The aircraft will be replaced by the Boeing KC-46.

Boeing's already put forth it's "Silent Eagle" concept, which would add much of the "stealth" capabilities to the already proven F-15 airframe. Not only cheaper, but easier to transfer pilots to, as opposed to the F-22.

Look up the KC-X contract & the KC-46. The story behind the effort to replace the KC-135 is a textbook example of just how screwed up our current appropriations system is. Boeing went from using an inside woman to mark up the cost of acquiring new aircraft, to offering to "lease" new aircrat, to demanding Congress essentially award them the KC-X contract because it was "Made in America," even thought it was a far inferior design.

My opinion, but one of the biggest problems with the F35 (and the F22 before it) is the rolling specification process we've created. In clumsy analogy:
Year one:
(buyer) Build us a cutting edge fighter.
(company) ok. It's going to take ten years and it's going to have A, B, and C.
Year five.
Hey, A, B, and C are great, but D is now cutting edge. make sure it's on the cutting edge fighter.
ok, but that's going to double the cost and delay production an extra five years
Do it.
Year 10.
Hey, E completely overwhelms A, so put it on as well...

You see the story.

Add the "initial order 100, wait, we can only buy 80, 60, ..." process and, well, that's why we pay WAY over budget and WAY late for our modern aircraft.

671 funky chicken  Sat, Nov 19, 2011 5:10:27pm

Shutting down F-22 production was dumb, and was a Bush Administration decision, correct? Fighter production is like pharaceutical production in some ways--the R & D and testing are by far the most expensive part of the process. All of that was done, and the F-22s that had been built were/are fantastic airplanes (unlike the frightening Osprey and the bungled B-1).

It was penny-wise and pound foolish, and typical of Bush Administration defense department decisions.

There's a proposed upgrade for the B-1B to the B-1R which is essentially a flying missile truck brimming with air-to-air missiles.

Ayep. The Russians hit upon the idea of building a family of aircraft on a common airframe, adding or subtracting parts needed for a particular job.

Meanwhile, we build individual designs, then before the first one enters service, we're already getting sold on its "successor" by the same company.

As far as I'm concerned, we should just keep things simple. We don't need to completely trash the venerable F-15 frame; just find one or two ways to improve it, re-engine it, upgrade the electronics, and get her in the air.

As long as the wings don't fall off.

The F-15 is a great plane, but they are very, very tired.

People forget that the AF has been flying those fighters over Iraq since 1992.

That would have been good in Libya.

Any chance we can get those built pronto, and test them against somebody?

They're already built it's just a proposed upgrade to fill in the fighter gap for air to air engagements. The idea being they would fly into the area ripple fire their AIM-180 AMRAAMs at enemy aircraft then turn and burn their way out of the theater since no fighter could keep up with them at sustained speeds at Mach 2.2.

Yeah, I never understood the need for the F-35 in the first place. The Super Hornet and the Eagle fill that void perfectly, and the Super Hornet is a relatively brand-new design. A Mexican told me that hot dogs are American Burritos once. Heh.

Took me a while to find this because the article is TWO frickin' days old and therefore disappeared from the stupid site.

Check this guy out.

"I set up all over," Cordova said. "I was at Furniture Gallery last weekend and at the D & M Gun Store grand opening when they moved to a new location. I can also set up for parties and community events."

The menu is limited to hamburgers, hot dogs, nachos, Hot Cheetos with nacho cheese and burritos. Soft drinks and coffee are also available.

Prices range from $1 for a hot dog to $5 for a specialty burger.

"My biggest seller is a Sonora Hot Dog," Cordova proudly exclaimed. "It's wrapped in bacon and topped with pinto beans, pico de gallo and you can have mayonnaise on it."

Cordova is a life-long resident of Deming where he raised a family, including his wife, Norma, and daughter, Lorenza, 6.

"I have a special running on Wednesdays of this month," Cordova added. "Hot dogs and hamburgers are half-price, and I prefer to be paid in pennies. My daughter is having a penny drive and I think it's a good way to help her out." There is a limit of five per customer.

The link to the article looks like it won't work. But hey! It does!

The F-35's the USAF's new toy to replace the F-16, nothing more. They needed another toy to go alongside their F-22s. The Navy sure doesn't want them and the Marines may be seriously regretting not just coming up with a new variant of the Harrier. Meaning build new ones? That's a good idea, actually. It's a hell of a plane, and the R & D and testing are already done.

The F-35 never made much sense to me, to be honest. It was supposed to be the "one size fits all" fighter that would work for every branch of the military, thus simplifying maintenance and repair and training and infrastructure, etc.

Just because it works for Southwest Airlines with the 737 doesn't mean it will work for the military.

The F-100A officially entered USAF service on 27 September 1954 with 479th Fighter Wing at George AFB, CA. By 10 November 1954, the F-100As suffered six major accidents due to flight instability, structural failures, and hydraulic system failures, prompting the Air Force to ground the entire fleet until February 1955. The 479th finally became operational in September 1955. Due to ongoing problems, the Air Force began phasing out the F-100A in 1958, with the last aircraft leaving active duty in 1961. By that time, 47 aircraft were lost in major accidents.[2] Escalating tension due to construction of the Berlin Wall in August 1961 forced the USAF to recall the F-100As into active service in early 1962. The aircraft was finally retired in 1970.

That's the one. Crazy.

Everybody's tried to do the F4 miracle again. The people who decide won't believe the experts that the jack of all trades that could match the mission designed aircraft had a little bit of luck; was a fluke. Later model F-100s, especially the D, were the main close support aircraft in South Vietnam, and remained in ANG service till 1977. The two seat F-100F was the first "Wild Weasel" defense suppression aircraft. The "F" also pioneered the fast mover FAC role (Forward Air Control, ie visual reconnaisance). Future ace Steve Ritchie was one of the early proponents of this. He and an observer would routinely blast down the Ho Chi Minh trail at 100 feet and 500 mph, spotting and marking targets for other aircraft.
