Newt: Fire the Union Janitors, Put Kids to Work Cleaning Schools

The intellectual leader of the GOP has another innovative idea
Wingnuts • Views: 24,390

Newt Gingrich, the man of Big Ideas and Bold Conservative Vision, seems a little unclear on the whole “child labor” concept: Newt: Fire the janitors, hire kids to clean schools.

Newt Gingrich tonight said at an address at Harvard that child work laws “entrap” poor children into poverty - and suggested that a better way to handle failing schools is to fire the janitors, hire the local students and let them get paid for upkeep.

“This is something that no liberal wants to deal with,” Gingrich said. “Core policies of protecting unionization and bureaucratization against children in the poorest neighborhoods, crippling them by putting them in schools that fail has done more to create income inequality in the United States than any other single policy. It is tragic what we do in the poorest neighborhoods, entrapping children in, first of all, child laws, which are truly stupid.

“You say to somebody, you shouldn’t go to work before you’re what, 14, 16 years of age, fine. You’re totally poor. You’re in a school that is failing with a teacher that is failing. I’ve tried for years to have a very simple model,” he said. “Most of these schools ought to get rid of the unionized janitors, have one master janitor and pay local students to take care of the school. The kids would actually do work, they would have cash, they would have pride in the schools, they’d begin the process of rising.”

The multi-millionaire serial philanderer didn’t add:

And they’d be a hell of a lot cheaper too!

Good grief. When one of the Republican presidential frontrunners openly and blithely advocates throwing adults out of work and using children instead, we’re through the looking glass, people.

Fire unionized janitors...use child labor in their place...thus removing one of the very last living wage jobs in some of these neighborhoods...would somehow lead to more stable families and higher achieving kids.

Yeah, I want 10 year olds using bleach and other strong chemicals to clean floors and bathrooms.

Like I've said, revolting in body, mind, and spirit.

Please, please tell me somebody has this "radical proposal" of his on videotape.

Of course then he'll just say he was kidding.

Revolting.

I wonder if he'd be for it if the children could unionize. My guess is no, proving that he's for it just because it breaks unions, not to actually help poor kids.

We could probably solve all the schools' budget woes by imposing a single special 20% tax on anything Newt buys from Tiffany's.

The former House Speaker acknowledged that it was an unconventional pitch, saying, "You're going to see from me extraordinarily radical proposals to fundamentally change the culture of poverty in America and give people a chance to rise very rapidly."

Repeal child labor and minimum wage laws! It's for the poor children!

People are actually going to vote for this lunatic.

I remember my elementary school janitor quite well since he later worked at the same hotel as my Dad. Great, great guy. But because he was probably union ergo he's scum to Newt. And Newt, many students work already you asswipe and school kids should be focused on school first and foremost so they can go to college.

6 Obdicut  Sun, Nov 20, 2011 1:40:48pm

I can't believe the GOP is actually coming out pro-child labor these days. It's pretty nuts. The time before labor laws sucked. Everyone should know that.

Some kids do have to work jobs to make ends meet and bring in more for their family. Some just drop out to do that. Neither of these are good things. They should be studying. A job in the summer can be good, but a job while you're taking a full load of classes means your classes aren't challenging you enough.

7 Obdicut  Sun, Nov 20, 2011 1:41:59pm

Also: What did the janitors do wrong that they should just get fired? Since when is it cool to just blandly talk about depriving people of their jobs for some abstract social goal?

That sounds mighty government-meddling to me.

My grandpa was a school janitor. I used to go with him to feed the fish on the weekends. I couldn't imagine being given the keys to a school and have that kind of responsibility as a kid.

Would the school district still have to put the child's family on a health plan? Or pay a wage that would provide for a family's room and board?

I actually find this kind of crap more upsetting than the theocracy garbage, because I think the theocracy is laughable.

Oh yeah Newt, the poor kids in school are really gonna take pride in cleaning their school after hours. I'm sure the wealthier kids are gonna be real proud of them too.

His naivete oozes out of his mouth. This guy has been out of touch with reality every since he began his pampered, coddled life. When you're rich and have been rich your entire life it is impossible for you to understand and feel for the financially destitute. Absolutely impossible.

As noted by recusancy, it's about breaking up the unions, at least primarily. Beyond that, it's about creating justification to start tearing down a lot of the labor laws that built the middle class that fueled America's growth during the last century. Once you've got more kids on the payrolls, then the GOP will them as a weapon against minimum wage laws, arguing that kids don't need $7.25/hr, and so abolishing it will free up employers to pay "market wages" and bring down their costs.

I'm picturing the kids repairing damaged ceiling tiles, replacing those long fluorescent light bulbs, and running the heavy waxing machines. In addition to fixing lockers, plumbing and electrical problems, and broken windows.

Not to mention cleaning up body fluids, using industrial strength cleaning products, etc.

And people actually will vote for this individual.

True story--the custodians at the school where I taught were all former Yugoslavians. There was a Bosnian, 2 serbs, and a couple of Croats. I'd see them playing basketball and soccer on their breaks and made friends with them. They said back at home they would have been enemies, but here they could be friends. And one had been a physics professor, one a professional musician, one a registered nurse...all displaced by war.

Yeah he's gotta be talking about kids younger than 14 since teenagers can and do work. I worked at the grocery store during the winter and spring of my Junior year for example as did a few of my classmates. Kids younger than fourteen should be focused on school first and foremost.

32 Charles Johnson  Sun, Nov 20, 2011 1:57:09pm

The unions are victimizing children. Children are trapped as students in failing schools. Newt wants to do the victimizing himself, and trap children as workers instead of students. I don't think the "rising" he has in mind is the kind of "rising" that he would get.

Too bad no Slovenes to spice it up heh. (I'm part Slovene). Sound like great guys. My janitor whom I mentioned was this tall black guy who was just about the nicest guy ever. He'd pinch the kids on St. Paddy's if they weren't wearing green as a joke. And he just had this memorable laugh. He'd also dominate when our teachers played the rival elementary school's teachers in basketball since he was a good 6'4-5. All the kids loved him.

This is a case of what might be part of a good idea taken to idiotic extremes.

I don't know if it is still done in public schools, but I do remember during my middle school years that we had a weekly rotation of students in our homeroom who were designated for cleaning duty in our classroom. This was mostly cleaning blackboards, picking up and disposing of trash, straightening desks, and maybe a little bit of sweeping. Team-building and general group responsibility stuff.

However, what Newt is talking about here is getting rid of trained maintenance personnel replacing them with child labor. No word what he thinks should be done when the first of these under-15s is injured because they are attempting to perform a task that they have no business doing. And believe me, with his proposal, THIS WILL HAPPEN.

re: #49 RadicalModerate

In Japan it was customary that children cleaned their own classrooms at the end of the day, as a group.

I think it is a good idea - not only is the classroom cleaner, but the group-ethic reinforces to each student that they are part of their class along with their fellow classmates. It would hopefully make them more sensitive to their fellow classmates.

That is, however, different than Newt wanting to dump unionized Janitors in favor of child labor.

I like your points. My other problem is Newt doesn't seem to realize at all that the primary thing we need to be doing is getting kids a better education and Newt is probably one of these types that think cutting education funds is a good policy. Money doesn't solve everything but more investment in education I think can only be a good thing.

Plus, once those shiftless little bastards go to work, Newt can make a case for abolishing the minimum wage, since kids live at home with Mom and Dad, so what the hell do they need the minimum wage for?

Newt really is a squirmy piece of shit. Really child labor laws are bad? As I said, high school aged kids can and do work so either Newt's guilty of stupidity or he thinks it's "stupid" we don't allow preteens and young teens to work. And there was a time where I granted Newt was a smart guy. Now, I doubt that.
