The First Lady of the United States cannot be 'uppity'. A person of her social standing can, at worst, be described as 'aloof'.

Which she isn't.

I think that's what drives these guys nuts. She is totally entitled to be treated like the wife of a head of state, and First Lady. When she is given respect and her opinions are considered important, and fashion magazines analyze her jewelry, this is absolutely how it should be. Or at least, it's traditional.

I am not sure I understand what uppity means. In the usual historical context, it was mean to describe blacks who refused to bow and scrape to whites in the South. What did it mean in the rest of the nation? I have no idea.

For me, it's a poisoned word that you avoid, because for most people my age, it only has the first meaning, and any others have been lost.

Now, stuck-up, that I understand. That was pretty much endemic in junior high. Every girl described every girl she didn't like as stuck-up.

Maybe that's after my time. Slut was in my time. That and, as I mentioned, stuck-up, which I took to mean as "isn't my friend."

I was the weird awkward smart girl in the corner with a book.

7 Shiplord Kirel  Tue, Nov 22, 2011 9:15:01am

"Uppity" is basically pretending to have more status than you do. Most Beckites and Limbaugh dittoheads are therefore uppity, since they mistake their confused amalgam of prejudice, ignorance, and self-serving assumptions for actual intellect, and assert that it has equal standing with, say, the conclusions of climate scientists.
As SFZ points out, the First Lady almost can't be uppity, since there is almost no status higher than the one she actually has.

This is not going to be another one of those times where these assholes spew their racist bullshit and then go on the defensive claiming they had no idea "calling a black person uppity (or picturing them with watermelon, or as a African witchdoctor or as a monkey sitting on a porch) was just good old fashion racism instead of satirical humor at its finest" is it?

12 nines09  Tue, Nov 22, 2011 9:17:15am

Limbaugh plus Beck equals racist to the Nth degree. Two druggies who deep down hate themselves and project like an overhead projector.

No, not at all, actually. What does the President or the First Lady say about you? I'd actually be stunned if Obama has mentioned either of them in any meaningful way, and I'm pretty certain Michelle Obama has never actually spoken in any regard about obese cult demagogues. So what do 'they' say about you? Anything at all? Or could this just be projection again, like every single other opinion and attack that the cult holds?

The normal usage assumes that the person being described is presuming above their station. This is why it's normally used to describe black people, women and children, although I've heard it used in old-fashioned Southern novels to describe the white nouveau riche as well.

Hence, in this use, it's a desperate attempt to reduce Michelle Obama to a person who knows she isn't really important enough to get the special seats and the special service and the special treatment, but is pushing for it anyway, because she likes putting one over on her 'betters'--that would be Rush Limbaugh's listeners--who therefore are entitled to mock her and put her back in her place.

Thing is, of course, that they are very, very mistaken in this. Michelle is not only inherently classier than Rush Limbaugh, she is the wife of the President of the United States of America, which, by itself, makes her a special person to be treated specially.

16 makeitstop  Tue, Nov 22, 2011 9:21:47am

The only difference between Limbaugh and Beck are the type of drugs they took (take?) to wreck their brains.

End result - one fried brain backing up another. And neither one has a tenth of the class that Michelle Obama has.

re: #14 JasonA

When the hell did arugula become the new caviar, anyway?

It's become downright subversive on the right.
During Soviet times, we rightly ridiculed Soviet theoreticians for creating such categories as "politically correct vegetables." (This was "politically correct" in its original, non-ironic, and communistically humorless sense). Cabbage, for example, was a politically correct veggie, since it produced a lot of nutrition and calories relative to the effort put into raising it. Lettuce was less correct, however, since the calorie/nutrition payoff was much lower for the resources expended.
It is a wonder to me that we, and the new right-wing of all people, have managed not only to revive the political vegetable, but to elaborate on it.

Yes, but notice that those previous "uppity" remarks were disguised. In the first, he's applying it to himself. In the second, he says he's not using it because Obama's black.

This time there's no disguise at all. He called the First Lady of the US 'uppity.'

I think the disguise was as thin as using the word uppity instead of n-word. But yeah, you're right.

re: #64 elizajane

On a right site I was reading last night (maybe HotAir?) the string of commenters claiming that they had never, ever heard of "uppity" as being racial in any way whatsoever was just hilarious. Where did they all grow up, North Dakota? Even in white-bread central Pennsylvania, "uppity" was about the negro folks.

The extraordinary ignorance some of these folks claim about the history of racially-charged language in the United States is just amazing.

Even if they were actually right, and it wasn't 'racist', that doesn't make it any more true. Michelle Obama could be white as the driven snow, and she'd still be treated like Marie Antoinette by these fools, hated as a dictator for no reason other than that their high priests feed them a daily dose of anger.

It's one of those words that comes across a lot differently if you say it to or about a black person. Say it to a white guy or gal and there's nothing different about it.

The First Lady of the United States cannot be 'uppity'. A person of her social standing can, at worst, be described as 'aloof'.

Which she isn't.

The speakers do not think of her as first lady, they look at first lady and see n*****.

They keep saying this over and over, yet nobody listens.

I'm not sure it isn't in some states if the police spraying was criminal over-reach. IRRC, causing a miscarriage, as in an auto crash, can carry criminal or civil penalties--one of the contradictions.

I think that's what drives these guys nuts. She is totally entitled to be treated like the wife of a head of state, and First Lady. When she is given respect and her opinions are considered important, and fashion magazines analyze her jewelry, this is absolutely how it should be. Or at least, it's traditional.

Not just "a" head of state, head of *THE* state.

For people who believe in American exceptionalism, there's nobody on the entire planet who outranks the President of the United States. Nobody at all.

Have you found where it was used to label Clinton, Gore, or Kerry. Hell, Kerry was the one they really like to make out as if he was just this East coast elitist, when did they use the term "uppity" on him? On any of the wives of these people? Why did the term just happen to come up with Obama?

That would work where women actually were expected to hold to a visibly subservient role. My wife can be a PIA, can't be uppity.

re: #4 EmmmieG

I am not sure I understand what uppity means.

I believe that is the reason why Rush chose to use the word "uppity". it has both the meaning to describe blacks who refuse to bow and scrape to whites hidden behind the more common meaning of "stuck up." or "snooty."

He gets to show off his racism while still claiming to not be racist.

Pepper spray burns your eyes and causes the nose to flow like a fountain but there is no medical reason it would cause a miscarriage.

Pregnant Woman Blasted with Pepper Spray by SPD Says She Miscarried (Updated)

UPDATE on Nov. 22 at 3:47 PM: ... While sources in general should be given the benefit of the doubt—even if they are homeless women—and there is no evidence that Fox isn't being entirety forthright, her story looks increasingly dubious.

Note the update was added several hours after Amory Blaine first posted this article. Hard to "read the whole story" in such a case unless one is capable of time travel. Another update states the Seattle Police Department is investigating the matter, though "no formal complaint has been made".

In any case, the sickening right-wing reaction to the story remains all too real.

122 Varanus  Wed, Nov 23, 2011 1:02:51pm

I'm just gonna throw this out there...

If a person who was for all intents and purposes neutral in the political debate described Mrs. Obama as "Uppity", and we could reasonably expect that person to both have planned their statement (i.e. the use was not an accident or slip of tongue) as well as have a clear knowledge of the racist undertones of the word, would the reaction been the same?

I think we are calling it out because the bias we put on Rush. We think he is a racist so therefore he meant "uppity" as a racist slur. If we asked Rush "why did you use that word", absolutely no answer would get him out of our first assumption. If Mr. John Doe had made the same statement, we would accept any explanation and settle with it. You say, well yes, Rush is a racist.

Why bother posting that Rush said A B or C at all? Just have a running article every day "Sun Rises, Rush is a racist".
