I’ve been checking out the deals at the Black Friday Deals Week, and as they do every year, Amazon has some really incredible bargains going on electronics, cameras, gadgets, video games, and other goodies. This is a great way to get ahead of the Christmas rush, save a lot of money, and help support LGF at the same time — because if you click through to Amazon from the image below, LGF gets a small commission on everything you purchase (with no charge to you, of course!).

With the release of more East Anglia emails today it is clear to me that there are multiple streams of idiocy involved in this theft and hijinks-ery.

The thieves themselves, as well as their well funded public supporters/fans are of course complicit in deception and misdirection (as well as simple thievery.)

Yet the inability/unwillingness of some in the media to accurately report what the story really is... that is just bad journalism.

arlos Pazmino, 21, a City College student who helped organize the protest, said that after students began opening lobby doors to the building where the CUNY trustees were holding a public hearing on the 14th floor, CUNY public safety officers surrounded the entrances and pushed back, using their batons. He said that when students formed a line to push past, the officers began hitting the students with the batons.

“I saw two people knocked down by cops,” Mr. Pazmino said. “They were arrested, and one guy’s head was bleeding.”

During the fighting, students on higher floors dropped books down on the police, and captured the scuffle on video.

I'm totally wrestling with the idea of giving my portion of the Household Christmas Fund to the Interfaith Food Pantry in our area. I drive by there weekly and last drive-by was slowed because of the lines of cars waiting outside. The cops were directing the traffic. The problem is the regents blocking student access to the meeting, denying them a voice on tuition hikes, and by them authorizing the cops using force.

Those kids were trying to get into the meeting and what's the first choice of the cops? Beating them with batons. Then of course all hell broke loose.

I'm getting flash backs of spending many, many, many hours building things with Lego's. I, to this day 40 or so years later, still love playing with them! My Brothers got thousands of them, I never got any cause my parents thought they were boy's toys and I was a girl so I got dolls and stuff. But all I ever wanted to play with was those Lego's, my brothers were always complaining to my Mom that I wouldn't leave their Lego's alone and go play with my dolls. Humph, dolls were boring, with Lego's I could imagine and build anything! And I did! I wasn't very girly as a child, I was dirty more often than not and I had more scrapes on my elbows and knees than my brothers did! I still love getting down in the dirt and planting things to watch them grow. Mom shook her head at me more than I care to admit too. Oh well.

That meeting was hardly the first opportunity for input. Students could register to speak. Crashing the meeting is not an option, thats designed to end the meeting. The regents are well aware of the opposition. It's not as if some students there stating opposition was going to be any surprise. Or chance the budget any.

They might even had been allowed into the meeting if they walked in like normal people. That angry mob trying to rush the building would have been stopped regardless of the ideology of the mob.

They had the opportunity to register and speak.

I've thought about trying to have a constructive conversation about this but it seems pretty pointless. Some people just seem to think the protesters are immune from laws and normal human conduct by virtue of their righteous cause.
It still makes my blood boil to see these crowds attack police and them chant "shame shame" when the police respond. I just can't wrap my head around it.

that's the entire stripped down version...do this, and that will happen...it's just so naive and counter productive....when the feds want your money, they don't line up and bash your door down for it, they use the system....you have to fight fire with fire, not camp out and attack cops....beat them at their own game...but that takes time and energy and drums won't factor in....the campins are over now...figure it out and press forward

the discussion here always seems to be entirely about ows methods

gallup today on OWS:

Americans have grown a bit more critical over the past month of the methods used by Occupy Wall Street protesters; however, their overall view of the movement and position on its goals have not changed. The majority of Americans, 53%, say they neither support nor oppose the movement, while supporters continue to slightly outnumber opponents.

the poll seems to show three things:

1) nearly half of americans aren't paying any attention to it to speak of

2) the goals, as perceived by those paying attention, are differentiated from tactics

3) views on the goals from democrats, and, critically, independents, who are paying attention, are significantly more positive than negative, but views about the tactics are more mixed, with 26% of independents disapproving and 20% approving

Also from that article:

All told, the stimulus did boost jobs and the economy in the short run, according to CBO’s models. At the peak of spending from July through September 2010 it sustained anywhere from 700,000 to 3.6 million, which lowered the unemployment rate by between four-tenths of a percent to 2 percent.

See, that's what it's supposed to do. Help in the short term.

Here is how I see it. Sounds trite but I learned a few things at a wonderful Buddhist Temple where I went to classes for over a decade. We have to understand that neither side is looking for a fight. The protesters have to push to be heard. The cops have a job to do.

It's brinkmanship, and that always have violent potential. Protesters will screw up, lose a temper and get violent. A cop can do the same. At the end of the day we all know we need some important changes. The real hard part is giving the other side some understanding. Here too. IMO, that's what has soured some threads. A lack of patience for the other side.

Again just IMO, I'm a guy that has only been here about 3 years. This is a big tent blog. CJ lets us have at it but only up to a point. Angry F bombs aimed at each other are just going to spoil the place.

I think that probably the most objectionable tactic that people are reacting to is the violence. Images of angry mobs fighting with police is a big turn off to most people. Unfortunately OWS sees these encounters as a winning strategy for them.

40% of the stim was tax credits...not for fat cats or union members only...actually went to millions of mid class taxpayers.

purpose of a stim is to soften a downward spiral. did it "fix" the economy? no, but it's not fixable now anyway, the purpose was to offset some of the downslide, thus it was modestly successful according to CBO.

point is, both Bush and Obama had to do something (bailouts, stimulus, whatever) or risk being the 21st century version of Pres. Hoover.

2. The US's 400 richest people have a greater combined net worth than the poorest 50% of the country.

What this means is that a group of 400 people in the United States have more money than roughly 162,000,000 people. COMBINED.

Now guess which group of people have the ears and create policies implemented by the votes of the lawmakers in the US?

I disagree about the "cabal" aspect of this, as the individuals comprising of this "400" are pretty damn diverse. Any claim that Bill Gates, Warren Buffet, Michael Bloomberg and the brothers Koch are all conspiring to steer the nation in a specific direction is sheer fantasy. On the other hand, those same people (as well as the heads of the largest corporations - since the "Citizens United" decision deemed multinational businesses as people too) do use their influence to get laws made that specifically benefit themselves finacially, the overall good of the country be damned.

So, in my continuing research indirectly (seemingly) related to Dodd-Frank, I've been reading a scholarly type report published by the Federal Reserve Bank of Philadelphia in 1984. It is called: Private Clearinghouses and the Origins of Central Banking by Gary Gorton.

Sounds so dry, and it is, but then I read this:

Before 1850, banks cleared checks with a daily exchange and settlement-each bank went a porter to make the rounds to all of the other banks. The porter carried a ledger book, checks drawn on other banks, and bags of gold.

OMG! Can you imagine? I LOL when I read it.

whatever, I don't disagree with any of that, but clearly the vast majority of average citizens are not better off for the enormous debt...and it looks like a huge union bailout as much as anything...green fail is another aspect...no back up plan, no long term solutions...like mainlining your last spoon

Debt will only be dealt with when it reaches Greece style crisis level. Too much polarization in Congress...too much worrying about retaining seats...no one willing to compromise on spending cuts and revenue increases, even though most economists say that's the only realistic approach.

And we've got TWO "third rails" in American politics: the military and entitlements...no one has the guts to stand up and say that BOTH need to be on the table for cuts. Without that will, debt will keep piling up since defense and entitlements are about 70% of overall budget.

Now guess which group of people have the ears and create policies implemented by the votes of the lawmakers in the US?

Will Blitzer quote Reagan and what he said when he signed the Convention against Torture?
Don't bet on it.

"The United States participated actively and effectively in the negotiation of the Convention . It marks a significant step in the development during this century of international measures against torture and other inhuman treatment or punishment. Ratification of the Convention by the United States will clearly express United States opposition to torture, an abhorrent practice unfortunately still prevalent in the world today.

The core provisions of the Convention establish a regime for international cooperation in the criminal prosecution of torturers relying on so-called 'universal jurisdiction.' Each State Party is required either to prosecute torturers who are found in its territory or to extradite them to other countries for prosecution."

The 5 main guys who ran for the gop nod back in 2008 look like towering statesmen next to most of this crew. That would be McCain, Giuliani, Huck, Fred and Mitt. You're right, things have changed for the worse.

Weird thing is, 2012 is a much better year to run as a Repub than 2008 was. McCain had to spend half his time reminding people he wasn't George Bush, and the GOP was getting pounded over the wars and economy. Now the odds are much better of a gop victory than they were in 2008, but only the bozos showed up to challenge Romney.

Huntsman's the only other non-clown, but he worked for Obama and believes in science, so he'll never get more than low single digits, which is a shame. He's actually the one who should be the new not-Romney candidate...but Newt inexplicably is getting a second at-bat. But forget him--more baggage than a 747. Also, incendiary, rotund, ugly and unpleasant, pretty much Huntsman's opposite. Not a winning formula.
