Blessed turkey. I am praying for a better year for 2012. Thanksgiving last year, my youngest brother told us he was getting a divorce. Then, at the end of May, my bestie, K, got her pancreatic cancer death sentence. I think 2012 will be better. I am going to do some political activism to soothe my soul.
Kind of heavy, but that's the kind of year it's been.

Some years you look back and think how lucky you were.
Some years, you have to look forward, and be hopeful for the future.

This time last year, my life was really lousy. Right now, I'm financially dicey, and there's a lot of stuff up in the air. My father lost two good friends this past year. Some bad stuff has happened. But tonight I sat down with friends, my husband was with me, my parents are well, and my BFF has a new man in her life. Her nephew was there. Two Thanksgivings ago he was a bump, last year he was crawling. This year he is almost two, and can walk, say 'no', and understand directions like 'Get Grandma a cracker from the cracker tray please." My cousin has a new little boy too.

Good things, bad things...Thanksgiving.

DHS Blasts Reports of Illinois Water Station Hack

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security today took aim at widespread media reports about a hacking incident that led to an equipment failure at a water system in Illinois, noting there was scant evidence to support any of the key details in those stories — including involvement by Russian hackers or that the outage at the facility was the result of a cyber incident.

Last week, portions of a report titled “Public Water District Cyber Intrusion” assembled by an Illinois terrorism early warning center were published online. Media outlets quickly picked up on the described incident, calling it the “first successful target of a cyber attack on a computer of a public utility.” But in an email dispatch sent to state, local and industry officials late today, DHS’s Industrial Control Systems Cyber Emergency Response Team (ICS-CERT) said that after detailed analysis, DHS and the FBI “have found no evidence of a cyber intrusion into the SCADA system of the Curran-Gardner Public Water District in Springfield, Illinois.” The ICS-CERT continued:

“There is no evidence to support claims made in the initial Fusion Center report – which was based on raw, unconfirmed data and subsequently leaked to the media – that any credentials were stolen, or that the vendor was involved in any malicious activity that led to a pump failure at the water plant,” the ICS-CERT alert states. “In addition, DHS and FBI have concluded that there was no malicious or unauthorized traffic from Russia or any foreign entities, as previously reported. Analysis of the incident is ongoing and additional relevant information will be released as it becomes available.”

The statement is the most strongly worded yet from DHS refuting the alleged cyber incident in Illinois. The story broke on Nov. 17, when Joe Weiss, managing partner of Applied Control Solutions, a security consultant for the control systems industry, published a blog post about a disclosure he reported reading from a state terrorism intelligence center about a cyber intrusion into a local water plant that resulted in the burnout of a water pump. The break-in reportedly allowed intruders to manipulate the supervisory control and data acquisition system, or “SCADA” networks that let plant operators manage portions of the facility remotely over the Internet. Within hours of that post, media outlets covering the story had zeroed in on the Curran-Gardner Water District as the source of the report.

The game was apparently released without needing to use steam. You could run Skyrim from the main exe to bypass steam.
Steam updated it a day or so ago to require steam.
Big whoop, I thought.
Since then?

Russian social media erupts as Putin apparat tries to suppress video of booing crowd

A hairline crack has appeared in the authoritarian facade of Vladimir Putin's Russia. The would-be-dictator-for-life -- he recently commanded his sockpuppet, Dmitry Medvedev, to stand down from the next election so that he could run unopposed for another term as president -- was booed while attending an important political function: a mixed martial arts match that he was tapped to introduce.

To protect the thin-skinned action-hero, subsequent airings of the event edited out the boos, a fact that has been widely noted and commented upon.

And that is where the story gets really interesting because some Russians, outraged at what they saw as a suggestion that they had shown disrespect to an honourable loser, have bombarded Monson's Facebook Wall with supportive messages, many of them in English, and many of them attacking Vladimir Putin.

Denis Kir from Mezhdurechensk wrote: "You are great! Putin is just stupid and we booed Putin."

Tanya Kuu from Kolomna added: "People in Russia don't respect Putin's mode now."

Artem Dzyuba from Moscow said: "It's clearly heard the crowd was outraged by the prime minister.

"His corrupted government, muppet courts, punishers in police clothes, pocket electoral commissions and people of his clan at all the most important and profitable chairs - it all drives us crazy!"

Paul Protsenko, a student in Yaroslavl, declared that the 21st of November had been the "greatest date for our country because Putin the first time was whistled and shamed!", adding "Russia must be free".

Thanksgiving: Busting the tryptophan myth wide open
[Link: latimesblogs.latimes.com...]

It is not the tryptophan in the turkey, according to experts at the American Chemical Society, who are determined to debunk that holiday myth. In fact, if you ate a Thanksgiving chicken, you'd get more tryptophan than you do from that turkey.

Although tryptophan, an essential amino acid, is involved with other sleep-inducing chemicals, the "tryptophan levels in turkey are too low to cause drowsiness," says a new video from the nonprofit group, chartered by Congress.

So, what's to blame?

It's that mountain of mashed potatoes, the piece after piece of pumpkin pie and the yams that make you yawn. In other words: carb overload.

But this isn’t the land of excuses, Black Friday veterans will say, or a refuge for the faint of heart: Another pregnant woman threatened to stab someone for not letting her in line.

[Link: www.newhampshire.com...]

The toy collection is already under way, but Best Buy will not be a collection point after a Marine was stabbed on Black Friday last year by a shoplifter fleeing the store, Gunnery Sgt. Robert Ritchie said.

[Link: chronicle.augusta.com...]

In Buffalo, customers were trampled entering a Target store on Black Friday last year. At a Toys R Us store in Wisconsin, a woman cut the line and threatened to shoot people. In Georgia, a Marine was collecting Toys for Tots when he saw someone he suspected of shoplifting. He tried to help, and he got stabbed. These are only some examples of the inane hostility that occurs because people want to get their kids a nice present. I’m a kid, and I know that having a parent in jail on Christmas would be far worse than getting no presents at all.

[Link: blog.syracuse.com...]

In a more violent turn of events, a Toys For Tots volunteer was stabbed by a shoplifter at a Best Buy in Georgia. But the most violent Black Friday 2010 incident occurred when a man was trampled at a Buffalo Target by overzealous shoppers rushing to get at the sales items in the store.

Boycott Kohls:

Rebecca Black Friday Kohl's Ad Annoys Pretty Much Everyone
[Link: consumerist.com...]

Congratulations to Kohl's on their early entry in the 2012 Worst Ad in America contest. Their parody version of Rebecca Black's "Friday" is just as grating as the original song, only with worse lyrics. Yes, it turns out that was possible.

Clever, Kohl's. Take a song that everyone hated so much that they watched it on YouTube eight million times. Add a singer displaying classic "bad consumer" behavior—shoving an elderly woman, stealing merchandise out of a fellow shopper's cart—and you have an ad so awful that people can't stop talking about it. Well, complaining about it.

It's unfortunate that the chain's ad agency didn't check with Consumerist readers first: the comments of this post generated some vastly superior parody lyrics. I liked this version from reader emax4:

Davis pizza store loses $200 in fake orders for Lt. John Pike
[Link: www.news10.net...]

DAVIS, CA - Police are trying to figure out who is making fake orders at a Davis Domino's store using an address posted online as Lt. John Pike's.

Owner Jose Delgado believes the orders are a prank against Lt. Pike, who pepper-sprayed protesters last Friday at UC Davis.

According Delgado, an unknown person made more than 40 orders to his Domino's store, on the 2000 block of Lyndell Terrace.

"That is unfortunate," Assistant Professor at UC Davis Matthew Stratton said. "I think if anything it speaks to the fact that people aren't quite sure whom to hold responsible or how to react in the face of these kinds of situations."

The first order was placed on Friday night around 9 p.m. A Domino's worker delivered to the address provided, but a man answered the door and said he didn't order the pizza, Delgado said.

On Saturday, the same situation occurred. When more orders were placed on Sunday, Delgado realized the orders were fake and refused service.

It only took the owner 3 days and a half dozen pizzas to figure it out.

40 Beagles Rescued from Testing Lab in Europe
[Link: www.ktla.com...]

LOS ANGELES (KTLA) -- A Los Angeles based group has rescued 40 dogs from a testing lab in Europe.

The Beagle Freedom Project rescued the dogs from a lab that went out of business in Spain.

In total, 72 beagles were rescued from the lab, but 32 were adopted in Europe.

The remaining 40 dogs arrived at LAX on Wednesday evening. They were taken to the home of north Hollywood animal attorney Shannon Keith for a special Thanksgiving.

The Beagle Freedom Project will set up foster parents for the dogs until they can find permanent homes.

The dogs, all males between 4 and 7 years old, have spent their entire lives inside laboratory cages, according to group spokesman Gary Smith.

Some of those poor dogs don't know how to react outside their kennels.

The wood gets a lot of direct sunlight so every other year I have to sand/stain/minwax it.

My wife has been doing black friday sales with my neice since the girl was 9 (she's now 18). It's female bonding day for the 2 of them. Luckily, for me, my wife can't buy me a gift and not give it to me. Whatever she buys this weekend I'll have by Sunday.

No, she's still where she is, and I am where I am. She has encouraged me to go out and about, believe it or not, but I have no intentions of starting anything with anyone else. Her or no one.

Crowd dispersement...it works.

LOS ANGELES -- A woman shot pepper spray to keep shoppers from merchandise she wanted during a Black Friday sale, and 20 people suffered minor injuries, authorities said.

The incident occurred shortly after 10:20 p.m. Thursday in a crowded Los Angeles-area Walmart as shoppers hungry for deals were let inside the store.

Police said the suspect shot the pepper spray when the coverings over the items she wanted were removed.

It's the 21st century, so forget rye...unless you're having an Old West theme party or making sazerac cocktails.

Gin's great, in the summertime, with tonic, lime, ice, etc.

This time of year bourbon seems like the best bet. IMHO.

Dunno, I rather enjoy my rye - tasty stuff, truly.

Gin is a year-round pick for me; used to drink it in New England all through the winters. Gin makes me thoughtful and mean, so maybe not. (Still, gin and bitters..... hmmm.)

Bourbon, well, I've put down probably 3 liters worth of the stuff since Wednesday.

In the meantime, fill the tub to the top with hot sudsy water and hop in. Don't worry about spilling water on the floor...it's your wife's house. Sit and soak for a half hour...then decide how much booze you want. But no playing with the toaster while you're in the tub.

Well then, it sounds like it's time to cycle back to rye or gin.

As for bourbon, if you haven't tried Basil Hayden's you might like it. It's made from a mash with a higher rye content and it's a tad lighter, in color and flavor. Been my favorite for years.

Red Czars, that's all the Party really produced. And it was always a poor fit, hence the strong nationalist elements in Soviet communism; it always ended up as an expression of Russian nationalism and solidarity, when push came to shove.

Irish, Scotch, Bushmills, Jamesons, blended, single malt, whatever...I never got into any of it and feel a bit lowbrow, as Scotch always signified distinction and class, in a very superficial way. But for my palate it's gonna take some more time to come around to Scotch.

One could talk about whys and whens of this case, but that's a brute fact and that's the only thing that maters in the immediate context. The only realistic chance for liberals is to somehow participate in the system (like Nikita Belykh, for example), which is why I had some hopes for Medvedev's presidency. In case of an uprising liberals have neither numbers, nor influence, unless there is an external force involved (which is unlikely given the nuclear status)

You're making a pedantic point which is not conductive to the discussion in any way. No, it's not necessary to discuss the history of "failure" of liberalism to see that liberals have no realistic chance of being an influential force in case of an upheaval, again, unless external forces are involved. To see that, one needs only to know the current sorry state of liberal movements and the opinions about them of the general population. Which I do happen to know.

But what are your reasons for judging thusly?

See above.

I am not talking about the "that" but the "why" because chances are without knowing "why", there will never be a conclusive answer to the "how" of moving forward. And that's not pedantic, but simply acknowledging the reality of liberalism in Russia as a tradition within a tradition.

See above.

Nothing disclosed there.

You're simply restating what you have already written. And I'm trying to explain for the n-th comment, apparently in vain, that the question of moving forward is irrelevant in the immediate political future, if it involves an upheaval. Sure, such questions may be relevant in the next 50 years or so, if there's still Russia (or civilization) and liberals around. Next few years? Forget about it. You're confusing long-term and short-term.

Late-Soviet and immediate post-Soviet experience was a unique historical chance, with liberal democrats having basically no anti-rating among the population (unlike now). The success was theirs to lose, and they lost it. The question of how to gain credit again is an interesting one, but it's irrelevant to the issue of what would happen if the current regime suddenly fell in a couple of years.

Nothing disclosed there.

Your loss.

Occupy Maine protester arrested again

Carr, who is from Athens, was arrested for the first time on Nov. 17 for punching and pushing a man who walked into Lincoln Park to object to the protest, police said at the time. Carr was said to be intoxicated and confrontational.

The next morning, Danny Arnold, 34, allegedly tried to choke a fellow protester, Alan Porter, who was playing a drum to wake up others at the encampment. Police said Christopher Schisler, 34, then hit Porter with a hatchet.

Police issued a summons to Arnold for assault and arrested Schisler for aggravated assault.

OK, it's Black Friday, and I'm open. My expectations are low, because serious shoppers head out of town to find a mall or a store of some significant size.

So I put on the Bob Dylan Christmas album, also with low expectations. It sounded pretty good while I was vacuuming, but now, not so much.

Aw, I would shop at your store if I was there. And I don't mean that to sound silly. I have an abiding and ever-increasing contempt for the big box stores that have driven most of the wonderful small businesses like yours out of business. I would shop exclusively at small and locally owned businesses if I could. I do my best but my options are limited more every day.

Thanks! I do OK, they still haven't figured out how to get your computer to fix your bike. It can teach you how, but then you have to buy the tools, and spend the time. My most loyal repair customers are the ones who have taken one of my classes to learn how to do it themselves. They usually decide it's worth paying for.

I managed to order my flannel lined Carhartt jeans from a local store, and they got 'em in Wednesday, just in time for post-Thankgiving up-sizing! My size six Eddie Bauers were purchased during an all too brief weight loss...

I used to work with a hipster activist guy who would attend all the rallies and protests. Every black Friday he would come in a few hours late to attend the Buy Nothing day rally and then spend the rest of the day at the cash register selling things. Even the anti-capitalist advocates don't believe in their own cause.

Eh, you can believe in something enough to support it without supporting it enough not to pay the rent.

Notice how I didn't tie the interesting question to "what would happen if the current regime suddenly fell in a couple of years". That's just in your imagination. Apparently, you don't want to talk about liberalism in Russia. Maybe because from your perspective, the most pargmatic chopice available is the least anti-liberal one, and that's just frustrating or something. That's fine.
