(1 star) Wholly unsuitable for eating, November 22, 2011
By Dan

Despite Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly’s assurance that this harmless vegetable mist is a “food product”, I found it wholly unsuitable for eating. It caused an extraordinarily painful burning sensation in the mucous membranes of my upper respiratory tract and the tissue surrounding my eyes, resulting temporary blindness which lasted from 15-30 minutes, inflammation of the skin which lasted from 45 to 60 minutes, and upper body spasms which forced me to bend forward in fits of uncontrollable coughing that made it difficult to breathe or speak for between 3 and 15 minutes. While there are many pleasurable ways to ingest fruits of the genus Capsicum, a nice New Mexico-style green Chile sauce on a stuffed sopaipilla for example, I found this product unsatisfactory.

Product Warnng: This procuct multiplies protesters
I casually used this product to try to disperse a small band of non-violent campers who had locked their arms together. Although initially it seemed to be effective, it took two applications! The worst part is that the next day they multiplied exponentially! Now what?

One positive outcome, I did receive a paid vacation for my efforts.

Sandy Koufax used capsicum cream on his elbow to kill the pain so he could keep pitching.

Which meant when he donated his jersey to the winner of a little league tournament, the poor kid thought he was catching on fire.

There's a PJ O'Rourke article, from his trip to South Korea during an election. The protesters he was covering have been hit with massive amounts of pepper spray, and he and his friends have made their way, choking and sobbing, from the protest.

Then they run into some pleasant Korean businessmen, who greet them with "You are Americans? What do you think about Korean democracy?"

O'Rourke's friend wheezes, "Tastes terrible."

No, the Black Friday shoppers have been pepper spraying one another.

Must be the season of the pepper spray.

(Maybe cops or security have also been using it for crowd control, don't know.)

I was given a pepper spray bottle by a fellow activist over a year ago. Given the almost rabid nature of the "advocates for Palestine" the person figured it would be wise to keep some on hand, in case the police were unable to offer adequate protection (we were always outnumbered 10-1, easy). I didn't disagree, but also never wanted to use because of course that would be assault, even in self-defense and that would open the flood gates for future assaults from the other side. I am proud to say I never had to use it, and have recently donated it to a friend who is living alone in the City.

All that said, I once, accidentally, released the tiniest fraction of that vile stuff into my immediate environment. I. Was. In. Agony. That stuff is wicked evil nasty all wrapped up into a tiny canister. Of course it is unsuitable for eating! WTF is wrong with people!?! It's a product designed to do harm, and extensive harm at that. No wonder only stupid people watch fox news.

There's something really horrible about her statement. I know it's funny, but it reminds me a lot of the people who insist that waterboarding is no big deal. Not making an honest argument for why these things should be used, but pretending coyly that they don't understand what the problem might be.

Going back to last night's discussion, though, there's one retailer that appears to have a god-awful safety record for this sort of thing.

K-Mart and Kohl's and Target all had giant Black Friday sales, and it's not their name I see popping up again and again with the violence, and the chaos, and the rioting.

The Amazon reviews are hilarious. My personal favorite so far:

Although, as many others have observed, this product is excellent for maintaining law and order, the ordinary consumer seldom ventures into this area -- that's what police are for. For the rest of us, this product provides invaluable help during intense shopping expeditions. The New York Times on Black Friday shopping: "In California, a woman pepper-sprayed fellow Wal-Mart shoppers, apparently to keep them from grabbing an Xbox she wanted." However, I gave the produce only four stars, not five, because of a problem that limits use of the product by the entire family -- the cannister is too large for a small child to manage. A kiddie-sized package would prove useful for child-centered celebrations like Easter Egg Hunts or Halloween.

Did you miss the part where at least one of the UC Davis kids was coughing up blood after having it sprayed down his throat, or did you find that funny as well?

I didn't see that but pepper spray shouldn't cause internal bleeding. The report probably isn't accurate (like the chick who claimed she had a miscarriage after being pepper sprayed) or it's the sign of a serious medical condition.

There's something really horrible about her statement. I know it's funny, but it reminds me a lot of the people who insist that waterboarding is no big deal. Not making an honest argument for why these things should be used, but pretending coyly that they don't understand what the problem might be.

"It's a food product."

"They just poured some water on him."

Hee hee.

If pepper spray is no big deal I wonder if she'd be ok with being deployed at her child's school. Methinks not.

A few years ago, a Wal-Mart employee was killed in a stampede. The people who actually trampled him to death had no control--they had to move forward or go down--and the people behind had no real way to understand what was going on in front. Bad crowd control.

A big group of people is more than the sum of the individuals in the crowd, and managing them is a bit of an art and a lot of a science.

I think it's significant that it's Wal-Mart, not any of the other box stores, that had such total chaos breaking out.

re: #78 Killgore Trout

Thanks, Dr. Trout. However, the problem is that repeated coughing and retching can indeed cause tears in the throat (as many asthmatics know), so you can make someone cough blood by pepper-spraying them.

As with waterboarding, try to not minimize the problem when making your case.

That's really your answer? okay them!

Your very serious Republican Opinion right here, brought to you by the fine folks at Little Green Footballs, lol

I don't think that was his answer in its entirety. Surely poor crowd control can be cited, but the ultimate blame for a store riot* must rest with the rioters. If they hadn't started trouble, there would not have been any trouble.

*: "Store Riot" was used to separate this event from riots with political causes. I wanted only to speak to this limited set of circumstances, and so excluded other riots to avoid undue complexity.

Stores get hit with lawsuits every year about their negligence and complicity in the injuries that occur at these sales. Many times they're found liable, and pay it off. It's still worth their while, so they keep on doing it. There's just a chance of a lawsuit vs. the certainty of sales.

Going back to last night's discussion, though, there's one retailer that appears to have a god-awful safety record for this sort of thing.

K-Mart and Kohl's and Target all had giant Black Friday sales, and it's not their name I see popping up again and again with the violence, and the chaos, and the rioting.

I really hate to generalize but, being somewhat lower-middle-class and a person that patronizes WalMart quite a bit, there's a reason for websites such as People of WalMart. More than any other retailer I go to, there's always plenty of low-brow, low-class fail going on from people who should be old enough to know better at a WalMart somewhere, usually late at night.

Well I'm not that old, was born in the very late 60s and I remember clear as day having a job as soon as I hit HS. Simple stuff: mowing lawns, painting, helping with yard work, etc. There are kids at the culinary school I attend who own more gadgets for their phones and cars than I do, and I know most of them still live at home with their parents and party hard every chance they get. If I have noticed anything it's the whole entitlement thing, passed down from parent to child. Blech.

More than any other retailer I go to, there's always plenty of low-brow, low-class fail going on at a WalMart somewhere, usually late at night.

People have brought this up, and I suppose it's a possible contributing factor. In my limited experience of Wal-Mart, I haven't seen that the clientele look wildly lower-brow than people in most big box stores. (I have seen 'People of Wal-Mart', but most of those folks are just dressed like lunatics, which in and of itself doesn't cause rioting.)

I guess I'm open-minded, but skeptical of the idea that there's a critical mass of out-of-control underclass shoppers that hit the Wal-Mart Black Friday sales, but NOT the K-Mart ones. I do, however, have no problem believing that Wal-Mart's notorious committment to sales may override good safety practices. GGT was also saying last night that she thinks the Wal-Mart store layouts are inherently less manageable in a situation like this.

Just my guesses, I may be wrong.

11 stores, no luck,,, AND

You have not clue 1 of what I've been through in my life

My son survived,,, he got one months later ,, I didn't riot because I couldn't get him the Wii at the time

You could afford to keep shopping & get it eventually at the reg price. Maybe these folks can only get it at the doorbuster price. Otherwise, no way. Sorry son, maybe next year.

re: #134 SanFranciscoZionist

I'm not saying that all of the blame for these Wal-Mart incidents rests on the shoppers (some of which needs some damn common sense); as you said, much of the blame goes on Wal-Mart corporate and their "Bottom Line Uber Alles" ethos.

From the store level all the way up the chain to Bentonville, Wal-Mart management is culpable for much of this crap; they have seen what happens every year for at least the past few years, yet the mitigation strategy hasn't really changed.

When you put a lot of people (many of them trying to make meager money stretch as far as possible and more than a few of them in dire need of a common sense transplant) trying to get good deals of limited quantities of merchandise together with Wal-Mart management that seems to have done cost-benefit analysis on improving security and crowd-control procedures at the stores and decided it wasn't worth the extra money off the bottom line, it's pretty damn bad.

To quote Val Kilmer in Real Genius, it's like lazing a stick of dynamite; the kicker is that people getting hurt or killed can be greatly reduced, but Wal-Mart decided they liked money more.

Not every lawsuit that could be filed against them ends up being filed, and many that do are made to go away for less than they might otherwise be worth (this is often because the plantifs would rather have the money sooner rather than later, often they need it sooner).

GGT was also saying last night that she thinks the Wal-Mart store layouts are inherently less manageable in a situation like this.

That's exactly the problem. Walmart is seriously goddamned frustrating. I tend to only go there for a few thing, like t-shirts, fishing line and ammunition, but walking to the back of the store to reach the outdoors section without a cart is seriously irritating. The aisles are narrow, even the main pathways are often clogged with pallets of goods on special. People with carts or children have to be on their game to avoid jamming shit up and making whole areas inaccessible.

The trick to surviving Walmart with one's sanity intact is to just not give a rat's ass about time efficiency or random rudeness. My Dad who is normally very easily annoyed and loves registering his old man's displeasure in everything to complete strangers can deal with it there because he's retired, has nothing else to do and likes spending lots of time looking at prices. Also he's oblivious to pedestrians in all situations (scary) so the fact that he's causing backups and then randomly cutting people off doesn't even register. If you're the kind of person who conscientiously and scrupulously gives a shit about courtesy while trying to get shit done then Walmart can be hell.

The difference between mob a happy concert fan can be as little as a loud firecracker. I had a couple of my kids at a Pink Floyd show in Venice, and prepped them in detail about what to do if the mellow joy turned to shit.

And surely Albusteve can supply incidents in which Rolling Stones concerts turned ugly.

How about if I post nice things about WalMart? I can't defend the corporate abuse of employees, but they are an appreciated employer here in rural NM. And it's as much a place to socialize as it is a place to shop. Maybe that's because the Wal Mart haters are the efficient shopper types, and they don't go there. I love seeing all the abuelas catching up with each other. It's a great place to brush up on your Spanglish. We don't have the population density to jam the aisles here either.

How generous of you to acknowledge that urban liberals deserve a voice too.

Weiner will probably come back, just as Spitzer and Mark Sanford have.

The only one who probably won't make a comeback soon is John Edwards, whose wife was so well liked that he won't be forgiven soon. Unlike Newt, who did the exact same thing, but a long time ago to someone who was unknown. I guess Mark Foley may have a tough time making a comeback; indiscretions with underage boys usually turn the public off for good.

I wasn't trying to be condescending. I was trying to draw a distinction between Weiner's act of weakness and Grayson's act of malice. I put that bolded part in to make it clear I wasn't attacking liberalism.

There was a story about Alaskan militia getting busted, but I hadn't heard that wrt Miller. What I had heard was that:

a. Miller's security detail detained and handcuffed a reporter that was trying to interview him.

b. When active-duty military were discovered on Miller's escort, he didn't have a problem with it.

1. Re Studds:

Studds Gets Standing Ovations At First Meeting Since Censure
The Washington Post (1974-Current file) - Washington, D.C.
Author: By Sandra Evans Teeley Washington Post Staff
Date: Aug 12, 1983

MARTHA'S VINEYARD, Aug. 11 -- Rep. Gerry E. Studds (D-Mass.) was greeted in this secluded resort tonight with two standing ovations from several hundred residents and summer visitors who turned out for the congressman's first town meeting since he was censured by his House colleagues for sexual misconduct with a 17-year-old male page.

2. He was reelected handily after the censure, and afaik the seat was his for as long as he wanted it.

3. How oh how did paragons of morality like the American Peepul come to be represented in Congress by so many shady hacks, hmmm?

4. Speaking of paragons of morality, Sarah Palin endorsed Joe Miller after a lot of the stuff on him came out.

What team is better than either of them?

The game should pit the two best teams in the country,, and BTW ,,, that game was ANYTHING but a "snooze"

There were great plays on both sides of the ball by both teams

No team is better than either of them, that's the problem. So we get to see a rematch of a boring game. Woo hoo. Great defenses, lame boring offenses. Three yards and a cloud of dust. They play like it's the 60's. I'd rather see points scored than a couple of field goals.

200 yards passing is nothing in today's college football. Geez, UH averages over 500 yards of offense per game, 400+ coming thru the air. I just don't like low scoring football the same way I don't like pitcher's duels in baseball. Call me a non-purist. I think sports, like everything else, should evolve.

Alabama is ranked 73rd in passing O; LSU an even worse 101st. Sounds likely to be another dull game. But yeah, their D's are great. woo hoo.

Pay attention

IN THAT GAME ,,, from your comment that it was 3 yards and a cloud of dust

3 yards and a cloud of dust is an old saying for boring football. And 200 yards of passing just ain't much in today's college football. For a lot of teams, that's an average HALF a game.

In the LSU-Bama game both teams had more rushing than passing attempts. That's very old school football. Doesn't even exist in the NFL anymore (except when Tebow plays) and is also receding from the college scene. And 7 yards per pass is nothing special--barely average. For LSU, a whopping 41 rushes to 17 passes. Bear Bryant would have been proud. Yawn.

Huntsman is actually a pretty conservative guy. It's just that he doesn't seem angry about it, as most of his gop opponents do. He doesn't use overcharged rhetoric to demonize Obama, unlike his gop opponents. And he actually believes in things like science. So he stands out from the crowd. Unfortunately to the gop he's poison due to his constructive working relationship with the Obama admin.

Romney's the gop best hope to beat Obama. I'd make him the favorite to win the general in betting terms. Gingrich, as we all know, is a loose undisciplined bomb thrower with more baggage than a jumbo jet. Earlier this week he proposed firing adult working class employess, and repealing child labor laws in order to hire children to take their place. That kind of bizarre rhetoric, coupled with an unlikeable personality, makes winning a national election difficult. Not impossible, but very hard.

Yeah, and Woody Hayes was a deranged relic from a bygone era...pathetic old man went out in disgrace after punching an opposing player...not quite Paterno shame, but still sad.

And 2 of the 3 things that can happen when you run the ball are bad: losing yards or fumbling. It's nice for eating up clock, but so is the west coast offense when run well. It's a different game now...25 years ago nearly every team ran more than it passed, in both college and pros. Now it's the exact opposite.

of course you want BOTH a solid running and passing game, but facts are facts. In the NFL, and most of college ball, there are more pass attempts than rushes, and far more yards gained through the air than on the ground. For better or worse, the game has changed significantly.

Big question: if LSU loses to Georgia (they won't, but just hypothetically speaking), should they still play Bama in the BCS finals? Computer malfunction would probably ensue. Why not just have a playoff with 4 (or at most 8) teams?

Umm, you might wanna take a look at actual NFL numbers. Most of the top teams in the league--GB, NE, DET, DAL, NO, NYG, PIT, BAL--have on average THREE times as many yards passing as rushing. Even the Jets have over twice as many yards passing. Only two teams have as many yards rushing as passing, and they both suck. College is moving in this direction as well, just a tad more slowly and with some anomalies along the way.

the passing game is more prolific now that ever...rule changes and the rise of huge, fast wideouts demands more vertical passing...hence O lines have become behemouth and passing is the new running...QB records have been shattered, not because Brees is a better QB than Staubach was...red zone offenses are far more complex than 30 years ago...4 and even 5 receivers at first and goal...the game is much faster, the rules favor the pass game and systems have just morphed with it...but non of that means shit if you cannot play action, cannot run screens out of the backfield or cannot slam the ball for a couple of yards....you MUST have an effective running game or the glamorous big play stuff will not be effective....it's not about yards, it's about carries to keep the D back to open up the middle of the field...elementary football

Give the top 4 teams a bye week.

Have 5 through 12 play a game, seeded like March Madness.

That way you could include a team like Houston, who went undefeated (to date) -- their opponents were a combined 61-80 this year.

All the top 10 teams would be included, as well as anybody who might have gone undefeated by beating up on East Creampuff University.

Sure, #13 gets left out, but if you can't break into the top 12, you're not really "left out."

And who went where? Or didn't? And why are we worried about who is usual? Or not?

I so wanted a LSU vs Oklahoma for a national championship...

Now that MU is in the SouthEast conference, will they ever play KU again?

re: #466 albusteve

Of course balance is the ideal. And if you can't do one or the other, NFL D's will stack the box or play the nickel and you're screwed. But take a look at GB: 3400 yards passing, 1000 yards rushing. Same with NO. And they're pretty successful despite these unbalanced numbers.

re: #471 EdDantes

Rules have changed over the years to favor passing. I think the quarterbacks of the 70's would adjust and pass more.

Oh sure, I'm not saying QB's sucked back then. The real point is that coaching philosophy has changed. And now QB's are asked to do more. Namath, Fouts and a lot of others could do the same stuff that Brees and others do now.

when Walsh put up the west coast offense, he had three things...a smart mobile QB, who could drift around and make three reads, wideouts that would fight for the ball, as in tall, strong and fast, and fearless tight ends and slot guys...I mean fearless...and even then it took him a few years to get it right...corners were too small, inside LBs too slow, nickel and dime backs with their heads up their asses...at that point in time a QB like Steve Young could just kill you...took awhile for the league to catch up and counter with 2 deep covers and zone blitzes etc to slow it down

yup...toss in a sturdy, tough home run hitter, like Frank Gore or Rodger Craig and you've doubled down...eventually the D has to deal with it and then you have the long ball...if not you get dinked and dunked to pieces

re: #472 sattv4u2

Umm, you might wanna take a look at actual NFL numbers.

You're correct when it comes to yards, but i meant balance in number of plays. Running 50% (+/-) plays keeps the defenses honest. Thats what the NFL coaches are looking for

Of course having balance is the goal. But there were very few teams back in the old days that had a 60/40 pass to run ratio, which is the norm today. It used to be the opposite, or even more extreme. (Except maybe a few teams in the AFL. Blanda threw 42 INT's one season when he played for the Houston AFL team, and his team still went 11-3.) Also very few teams amassed 3+ times as many yards through the air as on the ground. And this year many of the best teams, starting with the Pack, have exactly such a ratio.

All of which to me makes the game much more exciting than what I watched as a kid. Much more complicated passing schemes, more receivers on the field on most plays. And the greats--Manning, Brees, Rodgers, a few others--can still carve up most defenses.

The whole debate was very meta. It was really more about the process of debating and the obsessiveness of some commenters than about the substance of bank malfeasance or economic injustice.
