I hate to derail this thread so early, but I'm having some issues changing my avatar. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The last year I worked at Cafepress they did $1M on cyberMonday...and Tuesday and Wednesday and Thursday...if I'd stayed with them a couple more years I would have cashed in for about an extra half-mil.

Thanks, but every time I try to select a pic and hit upload, the screen says "no file chosen." It's odd, because before I click the upload button, the file name is shown onscreen. I've tried re-sizing and re-formatting, but neither seemed to work. Maybe it's my own computer; the thing has been on the fritz lately.

Reposting: It appears I am a solid liberal.

I've taken this one before, and I think it would work better with a wider and more nuanced range of options. I'll vote for 'diplomacy' before 'war', but this pits 'diplomacy' against 'strong military', for example.

Exactly. I know I would shift a bit to the right if they allowed nuance on War and Diplomacy.

(Personally believe the Human Rights should be biggest foreign policy cause and if a mass violation/genocide is going on, it should be enforced at the end of a gun.)

Here are the posts in question:

In 2001, we had the weight of (most) the World behind us. Iran gave some assistance in Afghanistan, and by the time WTC 7 had collapsed, both Russia and India were on the highest alert.

We should have gone bigger.

and:

Exactly.

In 2001, we should have gone balls to the wall. Gotten Iran, Russia, and India into a meeting. Then done something that we haven't done since 1941.

Declared War on Afghanistan and Pakistan.

Using the fact of not only 9/11, but the at the time well known fact of Pakistan using cells in India to conduct Terror attacks, and well as the Mazar-i-Sharif massacre, which resulted in the death of 20 Iranian Diplomats. The Taliban were nothing more than an extension of Pakistan's government. This is seen by the fact the Taliban stripped the land of most of it's resources, and sold it to Pakistan. In fact, I would argue the Taliban was a colonial organization of a sort.

At the time, I think Pakistan's nukes were much more primitive, and we might have had the technology to knock down the missiles that were launched.

re: windsagio

Pakistan DOES have a history of sending terrorists over a border. The Indian one.

finally:

I meant in 2001. After 9/11.

We should have done things more forcefully, with more allies.

The English language speakers have a lot of challenge with these otherwise simple Japanese names. Both "Kyoto" and "Tokyo" are pronounced in a very simple manner... and indeed from the Romanization of the names it should be obvious that they have similar syllables, just arranged differently.

To pronounce correctly - think of the English word "yo-yo". Do you pronounce it "ee"-"o"-"ee"-"o"? Of course not. So stop pronouncing Kyoto like "Kee"-"yo"-"to".

Oh, please. People posturing for Power is not a conspiracy theory. They are competing as humans do, not cooperating.

Mind your words:

I have a deep down feeling that the whole AGW debate is an attempt to control the economy.

Sure there are elements of power play, like with anything involving politics. That's a given and banal. But to "have a deep down feeling" that the whole AGW debate is "an attempt to control the economy" is a conspiracy theory and nothing else.

The twittering class on #COP17 seems so far to be dominated by the activist types, with some press, and only a few wingnuts. I wonder how that will change.

Things will really heat up in 7 days when the final push comes on... expect Canada and Japan to take quite a bit of flack on their decisions. Russia's choosing to do the same thing but they normally dodge from getting much criticism. I think the biggest new news we'll be seeing at this conference is how big of $$ pledges will come in form the G20 to help the developing nations in the so called Climate Adaptation Fund. The old news will be that there won't be an effective extension of the Kyoto Accord, but that is already expected.

HOBART, Ind. (WTW) — A northern Indiana hospital that erected billboards with the message "Obesity is a disease. Not a decision" is facing a backlash from people offended by the signs' suggestion that obesity isn't a lifestyle choice.

The staff for St. Mary Medical Center's Healthy 4 Life weight-loss program expected that some people would disagree with the signs that started going up in July in Lake and Porter counties, The Times of Munster ([Link: bit.ly...] ) reported.

But director of bariatric services Lorri Field told the newspaper no one expected the angry phone calls or emails from people saying they were offended by the signs' message about obesity's root cause.

"I didn't expect such an ugly debate. It's almost like an ugly tone," she said.

I see it as forcing responsible behavior.

Sure, there will be short term pain but in the end, long term stability is a realistic vision.

If these nations expect to be bailed out on a continuous basis, there will be little if any change and in the end we will wake up one day to the news that the Germans are tapped out (or voted for a government that will no play along as a debt enabler) and the the bailouts will stop.

If some of these nations believe austerity is tough now, wait till that happens.

PRESIDENT Nicolas Sarkozy's UMP party has reacted with anger to a report in the New York Review of Books that suggests Dominique Strauss-Kahn might have been the target of a plot to “destroy him as a political force”.

Evidence gathered by the veteran investigative reporter Edward Jap Epstein suggests that Nafissatou Diallo, a maid at the Manhattan Sofitel, might have been used to entrap Strauss-Kahn. Her accusations – never proved in court - killed his chances of running against Sarkozy as the Socialist Party candidate in next year’s presidential election...

I had an awesome Thanksgiving this year! Zedushka and I enjoyed a delicious turkey dinner, then we spent the weekend in Toronto for the bris of my newest grandson!

Saturday night I wanted to go out to eat at a fancy restaurant, but Zedushka didn't feel up to it and I didn't want to go alone. So instead I got some takeout from Zedushka's favorite deli, Marky's, and we ate in the hotel room.

The only thing that sucked was it rained all day yesterday while we were driving home.

re: #200 Rightwingconspirator

Today's entry is a YouTube video from our old friends at Inner City Media, covering Occupy L.A. on the Occupy Wall Street November 17 National Day of Action. We missed this video that day while we had our hands full covering New York's multiple actions and, since Occupy L.A. is facing eviction this morning, we thought it was a good time to circle back to how the one percent of the City of Angels felt about their occupiers.

In the exchange, two men in suits are watching a protest march happening on the street below them from an office tower in downtown in Los Angeles. Asked if he's part of the 99 or the one, one of the men says, "I'm part of the one that's making it so that these people here can get something from the government."

After proudly saying that he's part of the one percent, the suit goes on to say "Here's the other thing: now out of the 99 percent, have you ever heard of anybody great that's come out of the 99 percent?"

"The Beatles!" the interviewer says.

Admitting that he does, in fact, love the Beatles, the suit reluctantly admits, "There's four."

"The Marx Brothers!" the interviewer says.

"There's eight!" he admits, again.

The video provides a brief insight into a perspective we don't hear much about and, surprisingly, shows an exchange with more humor and warmth than you might expect.

From what I can see it looks like about half the tents are gone but they still have a huge crowd. The park is closed from 10:30 to 5:30. So they can gather as they was during the day. They can still hold the GA in the evenings. And Occupy is somehow keeping the trouble makers to a minimum. So much so the riot squad has backed off into reserve. SWAT is deployed in case of a serious 911 incident in the district while so many cops are at the park.

Kudos to the livestreamers. I have got to get set up to do that with my best cameras.

Vocabulary Word for the Day:

Australopithecine:

The hominid family originated between 10 and 5 million years ago, with a single species of bipedal ape. As usually happens with newly established mammalian lineages: The 1st specie gave rise by stages to a range of descendants, producing a relatively luxuriant evolutionary bush. Individual branches were pruned away from time to time as species became extinct and new ones were added. Eventually, the hominid bush was reduced to just H

omo sapiens.

Heh:

NH Union Leader Publisher: Romney 'Represents The 1%'

One factor in the New Hampshire Union Leader’s decision to endorse underdog Newt Gingrich over Mitt Romney: money. Specifically, Romney’s massive investment fortune.

“I think — and this is crazy, but so are we — that Gingrich is going to have a better time in the general election than Mitt Romney,” publisher Joe McQuaid told FOX News. “I think it’s going to be Obama’s 99% versus the 1%, and Romney sort of represents the 1%.”

Gingrich has his own vulnerabilities in this area as well, namely his consulting work for big corporate clients and his huge credit lines at Tiffany’s, but McQuaid’s line is a nod to a tough attack that Romney hasn’t had to deal with much in the primary but will definitely come up in a general election.

re: #12 ProLifeLiberal

Hey, DF, I was wondering how my positions on Pakistan coincide with yours.

I might be to your right on it.

Pakistan. One of those situations with no good answer. Pakistan, for starters, isn't even the little bit like a "person" that many nations are. One makes a mistake to speak of "Japan", for the reality is that there are many people in Japan and they often have conflicting or divergent goals.

But that's nothing compared to how splintered things are with Pakistan.

With that preliminary out of the way, what I see is that Pakistan has been good enough to allow the U.S. to operate supply routes, for a price.

On the other hand, other people in Pakistan, divergent aims and so forth, have been harboring Osama bin Laden and others among our enemies, have staged the atrocious raid on Mumbai, India, have helped North Korea get nuclear weapons, and have even been in shooting fights with our soldiers in Afghanistan.

This last mess, with 20 plus Pakistani soldiers dead, has to be seen in this context. Men wearing the uniform of Pakistan may or may not be soldiers of the Pakistani army. Their officers may or may not be following orders from higher command. All our information is that we were receiving fire from where we shot back at. It could well be true.

Double dealing, back stabbing, and corruption are central facts of life in the whole region. A falling out was inevitable.

Our best plan now is probably to abandon our nation building efforts in Afghanistan and go home. Stop giving Pakistan money, and save ourselves a bundle. We cannot get any good faith cooperation out of Pakistan, and with Osama bin Laden dead, maybe al Qaeda is too badly hurt to reconstitute. On its own, anyhow.

If a new Al Qaeda were to be set up in Afghanistan, and if they were to do us any major damage, the return address in that hypothetical next time would have to be Pakistan. Perhaps, with all that in mind, all the factions of Pakistan will be able to work out whether propping up a new al Qaeda in Afghanistan is a good idea or not.

For our part, we need to harden our targets so that small terrorist efforts cannot easily yield huge casualty lists. We've done some work along those lines, but with the failure of the effort to set up a halfway friendly government in Afghanistan, and to buy a halfway friendly government in Pakistan, we'll have to do more.

All this is tough luck for our Afghan friends, but we're just at the end of our ability to help them. They've not been much good at helping themselves, and history has shown that efforts to help those who won't do their part tend to fail no matter how hard we work at our end.
