Fire in the hole.

No, literally. The barbecue is fired up and standing by in case of emergency. Tonight's flavor is a light brushing with olive oil, followed by lemon pepper seasoning.

Speaking of olive oil, anybody have a recipe for lemon pepper that doesn't require a shit-load of onion powder?

Oh, and if you happen to have a couple of these to donate? Ok, if you have a lot you can set-up a booth next to the buffet --if Charles says it's ok. I'm sure you'd sell them.

From the link...

Nasrallah hinted earlier this month that an Israeli attack on Iran or Western military involvement in Syria would lead to confrontation between Hezbollah and Israel. “I’m not issuing threats, but it’s plain to see that an Israel-American attack on Iran or military involvement in Syria will lead to a regional war,” Nasrallah said.

Looks like maybe the mystery asplosion in Iran today got something good.

I need some gardening advice. I'm think about how to fill the raised beds in my greenhouse. I was planing on just a 50-50 mix of compost and fill dirt (mostly clay). Some sphagnum moss to adjust PH. Here's my problem: I'm thinking about the continued buildup of salt and calcium may become a problem eventually. I think I'm going to need about 30% vermiculite for drainage to help wash out the accumulated minerals. Any thoughts?

One thing that does dissuade me from using Chrome is that I want to set it up like my Firefox, where I can tell it to selectively save cookies/history and erase the rest when I exit the browser. I haven't yet figured out how to set up those kinds of options in Chrome, and I don't know if you even can.

I probably wouldn't do mine the same today, but at the time I was going in to the old LGF--and it was at once an expression of defiance ("Yes, I AM from San Fransicko. Make something of it!") and explanation ("but here's something you may be able to relate to".)

Not that that helped much. I remember one deranged late-night discussion which ended with me saying to the dude, "What can I say or do that will convince you that I'm not trying to hurt you?" and him saying "Move away from San Francisco."

Hi! I just registered here..How is everyone.. OK..I have a hundred socks to park here...Does Charles Validate Parking?
I heard there is a link to suggest posts that Charles makes.. Where is that link?
I preregistered at the Stalker sites just in case I get kicked out.. That way I can spend the rest of my earthly life complaining about it...
Does anybody else here like linking to Stormfront? Isn't Drudge dreamy?

They're still digging the foundation. I might post a series of pics once the project is done. Hopefully before Xmas.

Yesterday, I was searching for BBC documentaries on YouTube and came across several full episodes of a UK series called Around the world in 80 Gardens. Beautiful stuff. I thought of you right away (much to my lefty annoyance, heh). Below is the China & Japan episode:

re: #85 SanFranciscoZionist

I probably wouldn't do mine the same today, but at the time I was going in to the old LGF--and it was at once an expression of defiance ("Yes, I AM from San Fransicko. Make something of it!") and explanation ("but here's something you may be able to relate to".)

Not that that helped much. I remember one deranged late-night discussion which ended with me saying to the dude, "What can I say or do that will convince you that I'm not trying to hurt you?" and him saying "Move away from San Francisco."

I find my life much easier if I use the same moniker everywhere --or variations of it depending if it's accepted or not. It's easier to remember.

They're 2 feet tall poured concrete beds. They're open on the bottom.

You could use cinder blocks to raise up smaller boxes if you don't need the soil 2 feet deep. You might need some large rocks at the bottom. It could get swampy!

Wha' fo' salt? Chlorinated irrigation water? Try to collect rainwater to keep the problem trans-generational.

I would not go with the vermiculite. Many many years ago I used to use that for potted plants, but the eventual problem that arises is that the expanded mica flakes eventually separate and one ends up with (over a few years) something that can compact too much.

You said the bottoms of the raised beds were "open". Not sure what that means in this context. Do you mean there is an airspace under them? I suspect you mean that there is not a concrete bottom, but rather just direct contact with the existing surface of the ground.

OSU should have a soils expert in their hort/plant science department that you can access through your extension office. They can give you some good recommendations.

My gut feel is that at the bottom should be a mixtures of sand and gravel (say the lower quarter.) On top of that I'd put in a very high quality mix of leaf mold and perlite (expanded volcanic rock.) You'll need to fertilize your intense vegetable/fruit production anyway.

All potting media, even a really large container like your concrete structure, will become undesirable over time since you'll be watering with hard water and there will not be the living being (all the little one cell organisms, worms, arthropods, etc.) that one gets in an open ecosystem. You should probably plan of needing to replace each bed's material during the lifetime of the greenhouse.

Tell me about it. I've been playing off and on since Wednesday and I still don't feel like I've reached anything resembling a half-way point. Granted, that's mostly because I've been busying myself with sidequests and power-leveling skills, but still, this is a very deep storyline.

You're adorable if you think you've gotten through more than 20% of what this game has to offer.

The only reasons I'm not playing Skyrim now are (a) I have to pass my classes or all these student loans are for nothing, and (b) the boyfriend is currently glued to the 360 playing it.

Besides, once Star Wars: The Old Republic launches, my life is over. Might as well try to get things done now. ;)

But, you do have access to those extension offices - just call up the one for your county (Multnomah?) and they can research your answer and get you in touch with someone at the university if needed.

Again, I think your problems will be less if you can get the water situation so that you can at least some time use distilled, filtered, or rain water. Soils tend to be ignored by the novice or common home owner, but all the life is there, in the soil.

They'll be replaced soon. The new iATM missile launchers will be getting their first run through on Saturday at the game. Once the launchers are proven to work, we'll deploy the next batch here. The latest Anti-Troll Missiles don't fire unless locked on a verified troll. They also have dual-mode guidance, using both the new NK-4.5 Bullshit Detector, and the IJ-16 Butthurt Tracker.

This talk of KT's greenhouse spurs me to get on one of my soapboxes.

All around this area (and in all of SoCal) there are no end of hired "gardeners" working in yards, especially in the apartment complexes. But they are not, with only a few exceptions, really "gardening". Rather, a more accurate term would be "outdoor maids". They go about clipping/hedging mindlessly, then blowing the result around with their leaf blowers. Then they drop the pile of cut/dying plant material in the garbage and move on to their next job.

Besides often doing a poor job at the trimming, one can tell right away that they are not really gardening by the fact that they throw in the garbage the organic material. SoCal soils are poor enough already, but then to rob the next generation of plants the necessary material for life in the decaying material is robbery. I consider this poor practice on par with the use of the oversized SUVs as shopping carts - I see people driving those behemoths to the grocery store to get a handful of items.

Americans are impoverishing themselves through a multiplicity of ignorance.

re: #225 Killgore Trout

I don't like tomatoes so they wouldn't be high on my list of what to do with a greenhouse, but I understand they are the motivator for you here so any help I can dig out is given gladly.

One thing to seriously consider is rotating your crops. All the tomatoes and related plants (the Solanaceae) on one side, and on the other side your mix of herbs/legumes/leaf vegetables. Then each year swap sides with types of plants, so the Solanaceae are not grown in the same soil in successive years.

If I understand correctly, you'll have two rows of raised beds (on either side of a center aisle.) You can probably split each side with a metal separator (aluminum or copper, coated), thus giving you four quadrants with which to play with the rotation. Then you can have two planting cycles which allows starting the tomatoes at two different times of the year, giving you a harvest that might extend for 6 months or more. Still, I doubt you'll get tomatoes in winter months, but you might be able to extend the season all the way through fall.

Apparently you're not the only one who feels that way:

God: Hey St. Francis, you know all about gardens and nature. What in the world is going on down there in the Midwest? What happened to the dandelions, violets, thistle and stuff I started eons ago? I had a perfect "no maintenance" garden plan. Those plants grow in any type of soil, withstand drought and multiply with abandon. The nectar from the long lasting blossoms attracts butterflies, honey bees and flocks of songbirds. I expected to see a vast garden of colors by now. But all I see are these green rectangles.

St. Francis: It's the tribes that settled there, Lord. The Suburbanites. They started calling your flowers "weeds" and went to great lengths to kill them and replace them with grass.

God: Grass? But it's so boring. It's not colorful. It doesn't attract butterflies, birds and bees, only grubs and sod worms. It's temperamental with temperatures. Do these Suburbanites really want all that grass growing there?

St. Francis: Apparently so, Lord. They go to great pains to grow it and keep it green. The begin each spring by fertilizing grass and poisoning any other plant that crops up in the lawn.

God: The spring rains and warm weather probably make grass grow really fast. That must make the Suburbanites happy.

St. Francis: Apparently not, Lord. As soon as it grows a little, they cut it... sometimes twice a week.

God: They cut it? Do they then bail it like hay?

St. Francis: Not exactly, Lord. Most of them rake it up and put it in bags.

God: They bag it? Why? Is it a cash crop? Do they sell it?

St. Francis: No Sir. Just the opposite. They pay to throw it away.

God: Now let me get this straight. They fertilize grass so when it does grow, they cut it off and pay to throw it away?

St. Francis: Yes, Sir.

God: These Suburbanites must be relieved in the summer when we cut back on the rain and turn up the heat. That surely slows the growth and saves them a lot of work.

St. Francis: You are not going to believe this Lord. When the grass stops growing so fast, they drag out hoses and pay more money to water it so they can continue to mow it and pay to get rid of it.

God: What nonsense. At least they kept some of the trees. That was a sheer stroke of genius, if I do say so myself. The trees grow leaves in the spring to provide beauty and shade in the summer. In the autumn they fall to the ground and form a natural blanket to keep moisture in the soil and protect the trees and bushes. Plus, as they rot, the leaves form compost to enhance the soil. It's a natural circle of life.

St. Francis: You better sit down, Lord. The Suburbanites have drawn a new circle. As soon as the leaves fall, they rake them into great piles and pay to have them hauled away.

237 Interesting Times  Mon, Nov 28, 2011 7:31:49pm

God: No. What do they do to protect the shrub and tree roots in the winter and to keep the soil moist and loose?

St. Francis: After throwing away the leaves, they go out and buy something which they call mulch. The haul it home and spread it around in place of the leaves.

God: And where do they get this mulch?

St. Francis: They cut down trees and grind them up to make the mulch.

God: Enough. I don't want to think about this anymore. Sister Catherine, you're in charge of the arts. What movie have you scheduled for us tonight?

Sister Catherine: "Dumb and Dumber", Lord. It's a real stupid movie about.....

God: Never mind, I think I just heard the whole story from St. Francis.

Seriously, in my walks I come across yards of Astroturf. In that Mile of Horticultural Abomination there are a couple of examples. I don't even have words to fully describe my feelings about people laying down hundreds of square feet of Astroturf around their houses.

On top of being Astroturf, it's often put down very poorly. Mismatching seems, etc. Really stupid looking.

I can't imagine why people do that kind of thing. Nobody can be that dissonant with the concept of life, can they? Apparently so.

re: #241 freetoken

Astroturf was invented because people couldn't work out beforehand that a glass-topped stadium would be too sparkly to play baseball in, and that when you painted the skylights over, the grass would die. So yes.

Back when I used to mow my parents 3/4 acre every week, I spent some time speculating on what an observing alien would make of us all regularly trimming this valueless crop by 2-3 inches, and decided the easiest explanation would be that it was some kind of religious ritual.

Maybe it is.

I have a perfectly Twilight-zonish way to remedy that: when those people are ravenously hungry, bring them to a banquet table filled with every food imaginable...and then, when they take a bite, they find out that it, like Astroturf, is also made from petroleum products ;)

re: #231 freetoken

We try to grow tomatoes every year. We prefer heirloom seeds because they actually taste like something. This year, no matter how much collected rainwater we put on them (we had fifteen hundred gallons last September, we were dead dry by July), the plants just wouldn't set fruit because of the heat.

Frustrating!

How bad of a situation is it? From a study conducted last year:

After a detailed examination of federal immigration records, Prof. Jacqueline Stevens of Northwestern University estimated this year that about 4,000 American citizens were illegally detained or deported as aliens in 2010. In a study published last summer, she found that as many as 20,000 citizens may have been wrongly held or deported since 2003.

Abominable treatment of US citizens. Heads should roll.

LOL.... ahhh... I can excuse the knuckle heads in Jersey Shore cause they are young and very dumb, but how could anyone vote for an older man still tanning under the orange moon?

I may mock it, but in and of itself, being a tanner is not a reason not to vote for someone. It's a harmless vanity.

Another night of live blogging the UNFCCC... another night of suffering the mispronunciation of Kyoto as Keeeeeeeeyoto.

I mean, it may actually be harmful, but to the tanner. Not others.

OK, I now know three separate people who've had weight loss surgeries.

This is starting to sort of freak me out.

I would like to vote for a person with higher standards. Maybe it is just me. But I hope not. Sort of like people starting to back Gingrich. I could not vote for a person who left his wife, who was dying of cancer, for another woman. To me, that shows lack of a soul. And for the orange stuff, it shows a lack of perspective.

It shows, to me, an inability to stay with something difficult. Do we really want a president who bails on being president halfway through for a newer, fresher, more interesting offer?

Seems to be a popular thing.

Well, THAT took longer and did less than I hoped. I just found out I've got a good bit of work to do before installing Office 2010. I got it on sale tonight, but it'll be installed on my parent's computers long before its installed on mine.

That too... But really, how can a man who married woman supposedly because he loved her, bail when she needed him most. No soul, no heart.
