Countdown to Cain’s Bail-Out

“Reassessing”
Politics • Views: 27,599

I saw this one coming after Herman Cain said yesterday that he’d stay in the race as long as his wife wanted him to.

Apparently his wife is “reassessing” Cain’s candidacy.

“Obviously, you’re all aware of this recent firestorm that hit the news yesterday,” Cain began, his voice somber. “First thing I want to do is say to you what I have said publicly: I deny those charges, unequivocally. Secondly, I have known this lady for a number of years. And thirdly, I have been attempting to help her financially because she was out of work and destitute, desperate. So, thinking that she was a friend — and I have helped many friends — I now know that she wasn’t the friend that I thought she was. But it was a just a friendship relationship.”

“That being said, obviously, this is cause for reassessment,” he continued. “As you know, during the summer we had to make some reassessments based upon our financial situation. We were able to hang in there; we reassessed the situation and kept on going. We also did a reassessment after the Iowa straw poll and we made another reassessment after the Florida straw poll. When the previous two accusations, false accusations, came about, we made another assessment. The way we handled those was, we continued on with our schedule. We made an assessment about what was going to happen to our support. But our supporters, and even some folks that we didn’t have as supporters, they stood with us, and they showed it not only in terms of their verbal support, they showed it in terms of their dollars.”

“Now, with this latest one, we have to do an assessment as to whether or not this is going to create too much of a cloud, in some people’s minds, as to whether or not they would be able to support us going forth,” Cain said.

“Over the next several days, we are going to continue with the schedule as usual,” he said. “I’ve got a major speech tonight at Hillsdale College on national security and foreign policy, and I will deliver it with vim, vigor, and enthusiasm. And then tomorrow we’ve got some media appearances scheduled. So we’re going to continue until we complete our assessment over the next several days.”

I can't see how he figured this stuff wouldn't come out if he decided to run for president. Arrogant to a fault.

32 Alexzander  Tue, Nov 29, 2011 9:57:23am

I also suspect he has about one week.

It frankly doesn't matter if he bows out or not after that as even the GOP knows he is done and has been since the original allegations flew.

He has a .4 percent chance on Intrade. For comparison's sake, Even God damn Ron Paul still has a 6 percent chance.

33 Dom  Tue, Nov 29, 2011 9:57:42am

"I deny those charges" even "unequivocally" is not really the stuff of a convincing denial. He goes on to acknowledge this is all about whether he can brush stuff off and go on with his campaign. I predict the voters will find his integrity more important than his resilience, and he obviously has none. He is an interesting political animal to watch flailing about like this, and surely above all else he cannot be President given his exceedingly dim self-awareness.

it says a lot about the party that a fellow like that could be taken seriously. Just months ago, all a candidate seemed to need to do was come up with a populist message and some folks credentials and they could take their place on the debating podium...

35 Alexzander  Tue, Nov 29, 2011 9:58:42am

Another shocker in Intrade: Romney is down around 50 percent. He hovered at 70 percent until about a week ago. Gingrich is now approaching 30 percent. It blows my mind every day how fucking awful the GOP slate of candidates is. This is a country full of incredible people; wtf happened?

Maybe this will help Newt. I can't see many Cain supporters/donors going to Romney, and no other candidate seems to have much of a chance at this point. Newt's illegal immigration stance might hurt him (seriously, where is the GOP at when a guy who wants to build a border fence AND have it fortified with the National Guard is considered soft on immigration, since he realizes that it's pretty much impossible to deport every single illegal?), but where else are they going to go? Rick "Oops" Perry, and his "heartless" gaffe? Michelle "Vaccines Make You Retarded" Bachmann? Rick "NSFW" Santorum? This can only be a good thing for Gingrich, and a bad thing for Romney.

Update on the UK embassy in Tehran...

6.22pm GMT / 1.22pm EST: Here is a summary of what happened on a day when UK-Iranian relations plummeted further:

• Dozens of Iranian protesters forced their way into the British embassy in Tehran, tearing down the Union flag and throwing documents from the windows. They also pulled down a picture of the Queen and burnt an embassy vehicle, as well as US, Israeli and UK flags. The protesters said they wanted to shut down the embassy. Protesters also targeted Gholhak Gardens, a British diplomatic compound in north Tehran that has been a source of contention between Iranian and UK officials over its ownership. Both of the protests have now ended.

• The UK foreign secretary, William Hague, said he held the Iranian government responsible for failing to protect the embassy, despite Tehran's expressions of regret for today's events. The foreign office advised British nationals in Iran to stay indoors and keep a low profile after the attacks. The Iranian foreign ministry said it regretted the events and was committed to the safety of diplomats on its soil but Hague said it "remains a very serious failure by the Iranian government".

• The semi-official Fars news agency said six UK embassy staff were rescued by police after being held hostage by the protesters who it described as "self-motivated university students". The UK foreign office would not comment directly but Hague said that all staff had been accounted for.

• Clashes between police and protesters were reported at the UK embassy. One protester was in a critical condition, according to Fars. It said several protesters and police officers were injured. Police used teargas to try to disperse protesters. Some were reportedly arrested at Gholhak Gardens.

OMG! I really don't get the Zombie meme.

It's people reaching their proper level. Unthinking consumers who shamble from meal to meal without a care. No taxes, and past death since it already has occurred.

I also don't see how zombies are "cool" in any way. Vampires and werewolves cycle in and out of coolness. And you can see appeal in them since there are supernatural abilities (with liabilities) and they are often portrayed sympathetically in movies and related literature.

Norway mass murder suspect is insane, police say

(CNN) -- Anders Behring Breivik, the man accused of killing 77 people in a bomb and gun rampage in Norway in July, is insane, police said Tuesday.
He was psychotic at the time of the attacks and during 13 interviews experts conducted with him, they said.
He suffers "grandiose delusions" and "believes he is chosen to decide who is to live and who is to die," police announced, saying psychiatrists had found Breivik paranoid and schizophrenic.

Mich. company plans Obamacare layoffs

Stryker Corporation, a Michigan-based medical device company with operations around the world, is laying off five percent of its employees in order to offset the cost of a tax passed as part of Obamacare in 2009 and scheduled to take effect in 2013.

"The targeted [employee] reductions and other restructuring activities are being initiated to provide efficiencies and realign resources in advance of the new Medical Device Excise Tax scheduled to begin in 2013," Stryker announced in a November 10 press release, "as well as to allow for continued investment in strategic areas and drive growth despite the ongoing challenging economic environment and market slowdown in elective procedures."

The closest I ever came to betting on Intrade was when W nominated Harriet Meyers for the Supreme Court. That was just an unbelievably stupid nomination and she had absolutely zero chance of getting confirmed.

But how could I make money out of it? Before putting money on the line, I contacted Intrade. I asked:

In the MIERS.VOTES.OVER40 market, "Harriet Miers to receive On or Over
40 Affirmative Votes in the Senate," does the vote have to come to the
Senate floor? What happens if her name is withdrawn or she loses in
committee? Is the market cancelled or is it the same as a 0-100 vote

Their response was:

Thank you for contacting the Exchange Operations Team. If Miers is withdrawn or there is no vote, then the contract will be unwound and all trades will be void.

If you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Kind Regards,

Brian

And this will probably help Newt more than any of the other gopers in the race. Hard to believe that a guy as well known as Newt was at 4% for months and now suddenly leads the race. Tells you three things: the base didn't really like Newt to start with; but they've liked Romney even less all along; and all the other not-Romney candidates flamed out quickly (Rick, Michelle, Herm).

Poor Mitt, with all his money and endorsements from northeastern "moderate" Republicans, still may be stuck in neutral, unable to get the nod. And he's been running nonstop since 2007. re: #148 NJDhockeyfan

Since early 2007 the company has received three Warning Letters from the Federal Drug Administration citing issues in compliancy.[11] The first of these, a seven-page correspondence, named various issues at an Ireland-based manufacturing facility such as untimely fix of failures and procedural noncompliance in the testing of failed or otherwise problem-prone devices. [12] The second, sent November 2007, cites issues at the firm’s Mahwah, N.J. facility including poor fixation of hip implant components, in some instances requiring mitigation by revision surgeries; exceeded microbial level violations in the cleaning and final packaging areas of the sterile implants; and failure to institute measures in prevention of recurrence of these and other problems. [13] The final warning letter, sent April 2008, cites issues at the firm’s Hopkinton, MA biotechnology facility. Again, issues relate to quality and noncompliance including falsification of documents relevant to the selling of products to hospitals which are to be sold under a limited, government-mandated basis. Stryker maintains that employees involved in the falsification of documents have since been terminated. [14]

In the Fall of 2007, Stryker, along with the related companies: Biomet, Zimmer Holdings, DePuy Orthopaedics and Smith & Nephew, were involved in civil ligation with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Inspector General. This litigation called for a net payout of $311 million as the governmental department maintains the aforementioned companies engaged in unlawful kickbacks to physicians who urged hospitals to purchase their respective products. Stryker, however, having cooperated early in the investigation, was not fined. [15]

As of February 2008, a dispute exists between Stryker Corp. and the U.S. Department of Justice concerning a subpoena linking the company to aforementioned misconduct in sale of products. Since governmental filing of the injunction, Stryker notes that it has produced in excess of 300,000 pages of documentation in compliance with the mandate. U.S. Government counters, however, that the documentation was not proper in scope and format. Law officials expect the investigation to continue for several months.
