Thanks for all the soil/drainage advice last night, folks. I talked to some knowledgeable folks at my local nurseries today. They suggested amending the greenhouse soil with “chunky” compost. The large organic material serves to aid drainage and has the benefit of adding nutrients. I’m still a little concerned about salt and mineral buildup from the local water supply but I think I can rig an in-line pump up to my rain barrels which should serve my watering needs about 80% of the time.

Not very useful unless it can kill billions.

Koch brothers and the GOP will take care of that soon enough:

It started with Vic Rail’s horses, in September 1994. First one, then another, they died horrible deaths, 13 horses in all over the span of just two weeks, frothing from their noses and mouths, thrashing in agonizing pain. Then Rail died too.

Weeks later Australian officials isolated a newly discovered virus they ultimately named Hendra, after the Brisbane suburb where Rail and his horses died. For 17 years, Hendra virus smoldered in its host population of fruit bats killing nearly 50 horses and claiming three more human lives.

Then in May, something happened.

It was as if Hendra virus awoke from a slumber and roared fully into life. There have been more outbreaks of Hendra in 2011 – 18 at last count – than in the 16 previous years.

Veterinary epidemiologists hunting the virus now know definitively that Australia’s fruit bats (Pteropus sp.), also called flying foxes, spread the disease to horses, which then can infect humans. And while they don’t know the exact cause of the huge escalation in outbreaks, they strongly suspect it has something to do with the heavy rainfall and big floods that drowned northeastern Australia from November 2010 to February 2011.

And that has them looking nervously at climate change.

Abortion Foes Claim Government Subsidized Birth Control Is Religious Persecution

some Republicans and religious groups have adopted a new meme for attacking government subsidized birth control, claiming it’s religious persecution against Christians. The Catholic bishops, “one of this country’s largest and well funded lobby groups,” say that the birth control mandate violates Church teaching, and Fox News has gleefully picked up the argument. Fox hosts Steve Doocy and Neil Cavuto ran segments with titles like “Anti-Catholic Administration? Critics Complain About Admin’s Policies” — disguising conservatives’ assault on women’s rights as a matter of religious freedom.

That’s despite the fact that the administration included a “conscience clause” to the new rule — essentially a caveat allowing “religious institutions that offer insurance to their employees the choice of whether or not to cover contraception services.” The provision mirrors the most common exemption in the 28 states that already require employers to offer contraceptive coverage if they cover other prescription drugs and devices.

Giraffes are kosher! I don’t believe anyone has ever made giraffe brisket (what point on the neck would the shochet make the cut?), but scientists in Israel have made giraffe milk cheese. Wonder what it would taste like on a pizza.

Bail set for trio accused of assault at Capitol

A judge set bail Tuesday afternoon for three men who allegedly forced their way into the Legislative Building after 5:30 p.m. Monday, including one accused of biting a State Patrol sergeant’s arm and drawing blood.

That man was identified in court as a 26-year-old veteran who has served at least one tour in Iraq and is involved with Occupy Tacoma. He has a conviction out of the U.S. Naval Investigations Division for cocaine possession, court papers state. Thurston County Superior Court Judge Lisa Sutton ordered him held at the Thurston County Jail on suspicion of third-degree assault and obstructing a law enforcement officer.

The second person arrested Monday, a 26-year-old Seattle man, also was ordered held at the Thurston County Jail on suspicion of third-degree assault and obstruction of a law enforcement officer. He has two assault convictions out of Chelan County, according to Thurston County Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Scott Jackson. He also has two pending misdemeanor charges out of Skagit County for allegedly disarming a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest, court papers state. Sutton set his bail at $1,500. He is accused of jumping onto a State Patrol trooper’s back and trying to prevent the trooper from arresting the man who allegedly bit him on the arm.

The third person arrested is a 23-year-old Graham man. Sutton found probable cause to support charges of third-degree assault and obstruction of a law enforcement but ordered that the man be released on his recognizance, meaning he did not have to post bail. He has no felony criminal history. He is accused in court papers of grabbing the shirt collar of a state employee and pushing a trooper.

The cartels in Mexico are made up of ex-military and police officers that switched sides because the pay is better. It’s not a bunch of cholos in hair nets. Sending troops into Mexico would be a stupid idea.

Gee—think we could STOP THE WAR ON DRUGS?

It’s the usual warhawks, who only have a hammer, and so see everything as a nail. They figure we can just march in, put down the cartels with our awesome military force, then use our “good will” to bend Mexico to our will.

When the crowd disrupts the newsroom

“We looked at the impact of user-generated content and social media, CNN iReporters and of course our affiliate contributions in breaking news. Consumer and pro-sumer technologies are simpler and more accessible. Small cameras are now high broadcast quality. More of this technology is in the hands of more people. After completing this analysis, CNN determined that some photojournalists will be departing the company.”

In the future, everyone will be unpaid Dan Rather for 15 minutes.

So, some guy on TVTropes just asked how good the Turkish Military is (in regards to the Syrian Revolt).

I wish people were more aware of NATO here. Turkey is one of the Top 5 in NATO. If Turkey intervenes in Syria, it will be a curb stomp.

You should have been a fly on the wall when we were talking about Robert Spencer wanting to invade Istanbul, or whatever the hell he wanted. Take back heilige Constantinople, anyway.

I tried to explain the whole thing to my dad, but he started saying “Turkey? OUR NATO ALLY, TURKEY?” very loudly.

However, let’s not forget what caused the whole thing with Cyprus. The Greeks on the Island wanted to join up with Greece, Turks be damned. In addtion, the Greeks were pushing and squeezing the Turks, making them fear for themselves. So, the Turks came in. The Greeks needlessly escalated the situation out of some dumbass hyper-nationalism.

The Greeks have been needlessly aggressive all of last Century.

They were still 18% of the population. And Turkey ended up acting when Britain was blanching at enforcing the Treaty of Guarantee. In addition, the Greek Orthodox Church was being very aggressive to the Turks.

Granted, alot of this is just a negative view of Greece overall for actions in my lifetime.

Honesty, or at least how many people today are defining or using that word, has little to do with the word itself. It is frustrating because on one hand, those that engage in creative truth are not worthy of a reply. But if these folks are not called out, it only encourages them. They are like Chihuahuas. lol And as far as the list of folks provided, I find it worthless unless you are willing to call out the folks spewing tripe from the Right as well.
