Still, no chocolate, a moral failing on the part of Amazon.

Oh, wait...

There it is.

HARUMPHHH... only a few squares of Ghiradelli. Not such a good deal Amazon...

Amazon can be a wonderful place to shop, but, food is not one of their bargains. Food supplements (like protein) - that's another story and there are some good deals.

It's hard to tell. I've watched a couple times and I'm not sure. Usually if someone's going to do a voice over they make it more obvious. Since I have no clue what a porcupine sounds like I can't pass judgement.

Porcupines are very vocal animals and make a variety of noises, ranging from high-pitched whistles to whines, grunts and snuffles

still, it sounds too much like talking to rule out a voice over...

I've come to understand that as feeling creatures who think, humans are doomed to repeat history one way or another. Too many are simply not able or willing to learn to think long-term. They fall victim to emotion and perception.

Because it's created.

It is essentially the exact same thing, but it's not "natural". AND market prices are driven by emotion and perception, so created gemstones are not as valuable.

One could argue there is a scarcity factor, I guess.

This is kind of like the fact that amber without inclusions is A grade.

What? It's amber. Put a bug in there and it's worth more.

Furthermore, no Africans have to suffer for you to have a lab created diamond.

Well...you know how the "personal distress" of animals (e.g. fleeing, noise-making, other frantic behavior) seems to signal the onset of a major disaster, e.g. earthquake, flood, etc? There must be some vestige of a similar instinct in humans, which perhaps manifests itself as sudden anxiety, despair, or an overwhelming sense that something bad is going to happen.

43 freetoken  Tue, Nov 29, 2011 8:41:02pm

For example, Tribune Media is running this notably stupid editorial by former Fox talking head Rachel Marsden:

Global warnings

Tribune Media doesn't care about the content, all they want are eyes on their web pages (or print pages, for the few print readers left.)

Rachel Marsden - well, all she cares about is who pays her the most. And as a former employee of Fox she has to be aware that there is a huge market out there for nonsense.

Nobody believes their own nonsense. Glenn Beck who predicted the collapse of the dollar for years negotiated his multi million dollar contract in dollars. Jerry Fallwell didn't sell all his worldly possessions when he proclaimed that god was going to kill him unless he met his fundraising goals. Michael Moore isn't going to give away his mutlimillion dollar fortune to support the 99% of OWS.
Nobody believes their own bullshit.

No, I don't think it's a "prophecy" behavior. It's a sign of the Brave New World. Too much change too fast for so many people. They cannot process and internalize the change as fast as it's happening.

Some locals in Mexico (Playa del Carmen area) tried to sell us amber with encased bugs. The idea was to buy the stuff and then burn it and set the bug's *spirit* free after being imprisoned for 100 million years. Didn't buy any but got a great poncho for $11.00.

That too, but it's a very specific set of feelings I'm thinking of - and yes, I must confess a lot of it is based on entirely non-scientific personal experience...I remember tossing and turning, unable to sleep the night of Dec 25 2004, and thinking "I hope there isn't going to be another Sep 11 or something"...

Well, in theory you could be more sensitive to seismic events, but somehow, I think there is a more logical explanation, like coincidence. Unless, of course, you were in India at the time --then maybe you could have intuited something in the vibrations of the earth likes dogs do.

Ok, yes, it is a product. But product consumption tells us about the consumers.

That there is a market for snuff porn tells me there are some really sick people out there.

That there is a market for nonsensical, deceptive, news columns tells me there are some really ignorant or self-deluded people out there.

I don't want to live with people who get sexually excited at the tortuous death of another person.

I don't want to live with people who want to escape reality and furthermore intend to undermine those who want to deal productively with the situation in which they find themselves. And doubly so for those whose intent do deceive brings the infliction of duress and destruction upon others.

Well, as I understand civilized democracy, you have to live with them if their behavior does not break the law or directly interfere with your life. I don't like that there is a cult of Whacko's with multiple wives dressed like Holly Hobby living in a compound in Texas, but as it is, they are not breaking the law and they are on the other end of the country from me.

I get a voice in my head, on very, very rare occasions. Several years ago, I kept hearing "the refrigerator is going to go out" when we were getting ready to leave on vacation. When we got back from vacation, we could smell the rotten food before we opened the front door.

There are enough coincidences of your kind to warrant some investigation, IMHO. Mother's who know something is going on with their kids in a different location, etc. The problem is that there is no good way to investigate scientifically and those that do find the only way to make a living at it is to succumb to telling ghost stories and selling paranormal gadgets, crystals, tin foil hats etc.

There is a lot we don't understand, and I don't think we will have the science to understand it in my lifetime.

Or maybe ever. But, it maybe better for those to remain mysteries. :)

The night Katrina strengthened, I had a dream about it strengthening. When I woke up, I bolted to the TV. For some reason, the dream I had had the Hurricane at the same strength. This was the Saturday before New Orleans was nearly destroyed.

70 Gretchen G.Tiger  Tue, Nov 29, 2011 9:07:38pm

My husband has a lot of "gut" instincts about stuff that are often correct. I think if you are working in a high stress or anxiety filled situation you may be hyper-aware of things on a subconscious level. Also, you may be too anxious to pay attention and sort the stimuli you receive from your senses. It all goes in, but if you are anxious, you can't sort fact from fiction.

That, I think, has been studied or observed by academics. There is an energy thing -- we learn about it in Yoga, but it is beyond any level I'll ever achieve. I think Carl Jung would say it belongs in the realm of theology.

I respect other's instincts, I just am not going to recommend spending money on them.

You'd stay the hell out of my way

Anyway, a patient told the tech there was mouse in the room that she had seen running along the baseboards --it was a floater in her eye. I wonder how many witches and psychics thru the ages truly thought they saw something everyone else didn't because of floaters?

...or nuns :)

Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) was a remarkable woman, a "first" in many fields. At a time when few women wrote, Hildegard, known as "Sybil of the Rhine", produced major works of theology and visionary writings. When few women were accorded respect, she was consulted by and advised bishops, popes, and kings. She used the curative powers of natural objects for healing, and wrote treatises about natural history and medicinal uses of plants, animals, trees and stones...Although not yet canonized, Hildegard has been beatified, and is frequently referred to as St. Hildegard.
...
It is now generally agreed that Hildegard suffered from migraine, and that her visions were a result of this condition. The way she describes her visions, the precursors, to visions, to debilitating aftereffects, point to classic symptoms of migraine sufferers.

Hey, did you hear the one about Rick Perry and the voting age?

Perry, who during a recent Republican presidential debate struggled for nearly a minute to remember the third agency on a list of three federal departments that he said he wanted to eliminate, slipped up just as he was wrapping up his prepared remarks at his third of four events in the Granite State.

"Those of you that will be 21 by Nov. 12th, I ask for your support and your vote," Perry said to a crowd that included college students.

"Those of you who won't be -- just work hard -- because you are going to inherit this and you're counting on us to get this right. The idea that you're looking at a $15-trillion debt, that you're looking at entitlement programs that will not be there for you if we continue on this path, is not fair to you and it’s not right."

The minimum voting age in the United States is 18.

Wow. He's even more out of touch than I thought he was.

Since the fall of Qddafi's Government, we are learning alot about some of the more unexplainable events involving Libya. For Example, we now know what happened to Aerolinee Itavia Flight 870.

On July 18, 1980, 21 days after the crash, a Libyan MiG-23 crashed on the Sila Mountains in Castelsilano, Calabria, southern Italy, according to eye witnesses and official reports. Media rumors reported that the plane may actually only have been discovered at that time, and that the pilot's body was decomposed; this gave rise to allegations that the MiG-23 may have been shot down at the time of the Flight 870 incident.[6]

According to the Italian media, documents from the archives of the Libyan secret service passed on to Human Rights Watch after the fall of Tripoli, show that Flight 870 and the Libyan MIG were attacked by two French jets.

Friendly fire resulting in a CYA Operation.

So they figured the that Gaddafi was in that jet? That changes things a great deal. That would mean this wasn't an intercept mission that became a shoot-down (as KAL-007 was). This was a French attempt at a "Yamamoto Mission" (link provided on request). That's a pretty big failure in terms of the airliner, though given that the MiG likely seemed to be an escort the failure is understandable. The MiG's presence also likely dictated when the French fired. With a hostile fighter flying escort (or so they thought), getting close to make a positive identification would have been far more risky. So they fired from longer range, and thereby shot down the liner without knowing what it was. A true 'fog of war' moment.

A thing to remember there is that Chad was once a French colony, and France has worked to maintain influence and provider defense for its former colonies when it can. It's actions in this shoot-down fit that pattern, being the intent was to defend Chad by killing the tyrant menacing that nation from the north.

"Woe to the Vanquished!" - King Brennus of Gaul, to a group of Romans paying him an agreed tribute to leave Rome (circa early Republican times). He used heavier weights than agreed to balance the scales onto which the Romans placed the tribute in gold. When they complained about this, he placed his sword on the scales as well as shouted "Woe to the Vanquished!"

As it happened, time was running out for Brennus. Soon thereafter, a Roman army, trained the new tactics of the legions, marched to Rome, relieved the city, killed King Brennus, and sent the remnants of his army fleeing north in defeat.

Combat experience is everything. A few experienced men to train the rest can make all the difference between a capable unit and a mass of men that will flee when pressed hard.

Oh, I see. I'm a bit tired and fuzzy right now.

It's interesting to see the Libyans, just a month after the end of their brutal civil war, trying to help the Syrians. This could be like a train going downhill. I wonder if the real start of things wasn't so much Tunisia as Libya. Tunisia started it, but Libya may give this WAY more force. Which could cause a cascade effect.

If I were Algeria, I would be shitting bricks right now. They are surrounded by very pissed off nations, and one of them is already using their experience to help another nation. The other two seem to be near full-fledged democracies in their own rights. Not to mention allies of NATO, and in the case of Tunisia and Morocco, long time allies of the United States. Tunisia was the one Barbary State to not attack us after independence. We signed a deal with them in the 1790's.

CDM depends upon the Kyoto Protocol continuing, but they don't know if KP will survive, yet they are still arguing over CDM details, but some delegates are raising this causal dilemma, but others don't want to budge on CDM because that will mean they accept that KP is doomed, so they fight on with CDM jot and tittle arguments.

They went bankrupt even ahead of the latest "financial crisis". It's a small nation with an idiosyncratic population of Viking descendants.

Small nations can do these types of things because they don't cause very large ripples with symbolic measures. With the financial problems Iceland had/has their impact was magnified by UK banks which were blinded by their greed to not see how bad (financially) Iceland had become.

But in this case I can't think of any Western nation that will follow Iceland in this recognition of a Palestinian state. Eventually, yes, as in general Europe continues to evolve into a post-post-WWII something or other and I have no doubt that Israel won't be able to continue BAU for ever.

Nor can I see the rest of the Anglosphere following Iceland, or even the westernized Asian nations (Japan, SK) doing likewise, at least for several years.

With the financial problems Iceland had/has their impact was magnified by UK banks which were blinded by their greed to not see how bad (financially) Iceland had become.

Greed shmeed. Please stop. "Greed" is a moronic explanation of economic operations.

But in this case I can't think of any Western nation that will follow Iceland in this recognition of a Palestinian state.

Norway maybe (scandinavian ties, also very pro-Palestine). Or Denmark (even stronger ties to Iceland). Maybe some other state that feels too bullied by the EU (Greece? Hungary?).

155 freetoken  Wed, Nov 30, 2011 2:19:36am

They have moved on to the "Adaptation Fund", but the AF suffers the same basic problem as the CDM. Like the CDM, the AF depends upon a flow of money that arises from the KP working. But if the major nations don't go ahead with the next phase of KP, then there is not a functional flow of funds.

So this is where we get to the whole COP structure - there two meetings in parallel - one for the KP, and one for everything else, but mostly what is known as "LCA". The diehard KP nations always hated LCA because they realized it allowed for negotiation on items outside of the KP framework and feared that LCA would eventually doom KP. They were right, of course, but that is the nature of things.

As your first link points out, the timeline goes way back before 2007, so why start in 2007? The structural problems of real estate affecting banking in the US go way back, and I remember the demise of the Savings and Loans system.

So when I referenced the "financial crisis" I was thinking of the late GWB administration era blow-up, not trying to follow the genetics back to the first ancestor!

158 (I Stand By What I Said Whatever It Was)  Wed, Nov 30, 2011 2:27:11am

re: #157 freetoken

so why start in 2007?

Because that's when the fallout started. And by fallout I mean payments not being made on a scale that blew the lid off the fraudulent bubble and instantly threw every big player into the red or made dubious their liquidity. Crisis = payments not being made (or more generally: contracts not being upheld) on a systemic scale.

Yes, you can track the causes back as far as you wish. But the trigger definitively was the subprime mortgage implosion.

In all seriousness, I'd say Somalia is at the bottom of a broken pile. One of the best ways to help it change would be the engagement of its rich almost-neighbors in the Middle East, who share a faith. But those countries are also broken, though they're broken in way that involves less pirates and more being assholes on a global scale. The countries near it, Ethiopia and Kenya, have both been constantly riled with political turmoil, Kenya just ending a fractious political stalemate in the last couple of years. They probably are too internally-focused to be of much help, but continuing to aid them in their attempts to remain democratic would help stabilize the region.

Good point. Both Kenya and Ethiopia have troops on the ground now working on their own. I'd like to see the US incentivise them to come under the AU troops who are making some good progress in Mogadishu. The AU troops have received some significant training by a US contractor paid by UN and US State Department that has had a real impact on the security of the African Union troops.

Al Shabab has once again forbidden several aid organizations from delivering desperately needed aid. I think there is an opportunity to use this fact against them.

WOW!

Beneath the plaza are thousands of gallons of gasoline and diesel fuel that are sold tax-free and at huge profit by the bridge company's Ammex Detroit Duty Free Store.

Bridge owner Manuel (Matty) Moroun fought along multiple fronts for more than a decade before winning the right to sell duty-free fuel, finally triumphing in court in 2007.

By selling gasoline and diesel fuel at slightly below market prices, the Ammex fuel operation can net, based on prices last week, a savings of more than 60 cents per gallon (about $9 for a 15-gallon fill-up) that nearby U.S. stations pay in gas and sales taxes.

"That goes directly into (Moroun's) pocket," said Bill Vollenweider, president of the Detroit Travel Center truck stop on I-75 just south of Detroit. "It's a heckuva competitive disadvantage. He won the right to do it. But it's not right."

Famine weakens and divides al Shabaab militants

Refugees fleeing the area have recounted harrowing tales of al Shabaab militants attempting to stop civilians from reaching aid centers, with some refugees telling reporters that al Shabaab militants had killed men trying to flee, saying it was better to starve than accept help from the West.
...
In recent weeks, the group’s mercilessly obdurate response to the latest hunger crisis - which was fueled by Al Shabaab’s disastrous agricultural policies and incessant fighting - has seriously weakened the group, according to Rashid Abdi, a Somalia analyst at the Brussels-based International Crisis Group.

Gee, I wonder why //

(Once the St Lawrence froze over the Indians would drive over the ice instead of taking the roads and using the bridge to get between the different parts of the reservation - which was on the US side, an island in the river, and the Canadian side of the river.)

I didn't know there was "unrest" going on up there beyond their typical in-fighting between their "modernist" and "traditionalist" factions. More used to hearing about the groups up near Lachine (next to Montreal) putting up roadblocks.

Heh. Solution would probably have to be a balancing act between re-dividing the country(ies) in the region along ethnic lines and also making them semi-independent in terms of resources as well to minimize the have/have-not differences that lead to wars. In addition to the necessary educational and aid requirements to get stable regimes established and running. A federation of some sort would be interesting, but would probably fail due to ethnic tensions and demagoguery (e.g. leaders of groups not currently in top dog position agitating that they're being kept down and persecuted.)

LOL so simple to google.

The East Wing, which contains additional office space, was added to the White House in 1942. Among its uses, the East Wing has intermittently housed the offices and staff of the First Lady, and the White House Social Office. Rosalynn Carter, in 1977, was the first to place her personal office in the East Wing and to formally call it the "Office of the First Lady." The East Wing was built during World War II in order to hide the construction of an underground bunker to be used in emergencies. The bunker has come to be known as the Presidential Emergency Operations Center.

Fed, ECB offer aid to global financial system

The Fed -- along with central banks of the eurozone, England, Japan, Switzerland and Canada -- announced a coordinated plan to lower prices on dollar liquidity swaps beginning on Dec. 5, and extending these swap arrangements to Feb. 1, 2013.

A swap takes place when the Fed provides U.S. dollars to a foreign central bank in exchange for the equivalent amount of foreign currency from that central bank.

Overall, these efforts are meant to "ease strains in financial markets and thereby mitigate the effects of such strains on the supply of credit to households and businesses and so help foster economic activity," the Federal Reserve said in a press release.

No. That's because retailers want you to remember that you need to buy gifts for people, preferably as soon as possible.

Some stores play the shittiest holiday music they can find. "Jingle Bells" sung "jazz style." I want to run out screaming whenever I hear that. Also, some death metal cover of "Rudolph"

Wow that sucks.

I can never take Christmas music seriously ever again after living in Japan a couple years ago. It's so weird there - they start preparing even earlier than we do because they don't have Thanksgiving, but the Japanese just don't get what Christmas is, really. I found it pretty amusing.

Coolest thing I ever saw was in Little Tokyo, Los Angeles back in the early 80s. One of the stores there had Shogun Santa. They had a guy in full shogun era armor, but with a Christmas theme. Red and white accents, jingle bells attached to the armor and a sashimono saying Merry Christmas.

Did they really have Santa on a crucifix or is that just a legend?

I've never heard or seen of that, but I would hardly be shocked if it's true. It seems plausible from what I did see.
It's one of the interesting things about that there - it's not that they think Jesus is good or bad in one way or another. Most of my Japanese friends just don't get Christianity at all. "I never asked him to die for me" and all that.

Alabama law has citizens spying on their neighbors

Sheriff Mike Blakely said most of his department’s resources are not being stretched thin because of illegal immigration arrests, but instead because of investigations into the alleged mistreatment of illegal immigrants. [...]

In terms of the arrests of illegal immigrants, the sheriff said there hasn’t been a noticeable increase because he feels many illegal immigrants have left the community. However, he said the department’s call volume is rising because residents want officers to investigate neighbors who they believe are illegal.

“There’s a lot of people confused about the law and people are getting frustrated with us,” he said. “If they suspect someone is illegal, we can’t just go out and check them out. The law prohibits us from doing that. We can contact ICE, but unless they’re committing a crime, we have no authority (to arrest them).”

I thought last night's broadcast of the "classic" Burl Ives Christmas show was Teh Suck. Why do they broadcast this shit anyway? People with kids already have DVDs full of their favorite Christmas shows, to watch at their own convenience. It's not like the 1960's when we didn't have the choices and the technology that is available today?
