They Call It Cyber Monday, but Thursday’s Just the Same

Amazon’s deal-a-ganza continues
Lifestyle • Views: 43,803

Amazon’s Cyber Monday gadget-fest is still on, with remarkable bargains on all kinds of electronic gear — and other stuff too. I just bought this very nice high-back office chair at a 56% discount, for example.

These really are the best buys of the year, and if you click through from our link we get a small commission based on the purchase price — so you can help support LGF at the same time.

Steve King Publicly Interrogates Veteran About His Immigration Status

Singling out the only immigrant on the panel, King questioned congressional witness and former Sacramento police chief Arturo Venegas about why he came to the U.S. Venegas said he was brought to the country as a child by his U.S.-born mother (which means he’s also an American citizen). King responded, “Can you just tell us what year and what visa, then, Mr. Venegas?” — apparently not knowing or caring that U.S. citizens born abroad don’t need special visas to enter the country. Venegas also fought for his country in the Vietnam War

Douchebag.

Anti-Immigration Group May Shut Down And Rebrand Because Of Financial Issues

In an e-mail to supporters Thursday, ALIPAC head William Gheen wrote that for “first time in our organization’s history, we have failed to reach our minimum operational expenses for our final funds drive of 2011. All things being equal, this would put us on a final shutdown date of January 1,” 2012.

But, he told TPM that “we are not closing down, we are making changes to our organization to be able to function better in the very changed economic environment,” and that they are fundraising to help launch a more efficient “ALIPAC 2.0.”

In the e-mail, Gheen first blamed the economic downturn and technical problems with the site for the group’s fundraising troubles, but added that it doesn’t help that “we are having to take issue with different politicians like Rick Perry and Newt Gingrich of whom some of our members have decided to support.”

But, he said, it’s also Obama’s fault, because supporters are so “utterly dismayed by the authoritarian and dictatorial actions of Obama,” that they have become “demoralized” and “are throwing their hands up in exhaustion instead of rallying against Obama.”

Also looking for a good idea for a children's biography of a figure that's not a household name. Thought about Michael Collins for my kid brother whose also into Irish history and I thought it would be neat too since I have Tim Pat Coogan's bio myself and thought it could be fun to discuss Collins while we both read biographies. U.S. moves to supply 'bunker buster' bombs to UAE

The Obama administration has proposed selling 600 "bunker buster" bombs and other munitions to the United Arab Emirates, which lies across the Gulf from Iran, to deter what it called regional threats.

Iran is widely suspected of seeking to develop nuclear arms through a program that Tehran says is for peaceful power generation only.

The proposed $304 million sale would include 4,900 tail kits built by Boeing Co that turn unguided free-fall bombs into guided weapons and 4,300 "general purpose" bombs, the Defense Department said in a mandatory arms sale notice dated Wednesday.

The deal would boost UAE's ability "to meet current and future regional threats" and to help deter aggression, the Pentagon's Defense Security Cooperation Agency said in the note to lawmakers.

You see, the problem is that yes, we give our kids gifts on Christmas. We just have the philosophy that expensive electronics should be something they purchase when they are older and have their own money. We also don't believe in buying garbage.

I'm not sure exactly what that might mean. I suppose those missiles could be set up and used later as part of a larger offensive. It's hard to imagine the defensive use of bunker busters. They're pretty much an offensive weapon. They're especially useless without some really good intel to use for a target list.

But remember -- there's no such thing as class warfare:

Norquist Tells GOP That Raising Taxes On The Middle Class Doesn’t Count As A Tax Increase

Anti-tax zealot Grover Norquist, the president of Americans For Tax Reform and author of the radical anti-tax pledge that has played a significant role in hamstringing budget and deficit-reduction negotiations, has said that it is unacceptable for those who have signed his pledge to vote in favor of any tax increase. But now that President Obama and congressional Democrats are backing a tax cut aimed at stimulating economic growth, Norquist has changed his tune.

Norquist met with Republican members today to let them know that opposing the extension of the payroll tax cut — which would provide many families an extra $1,000 a year — would not amount to supporting a tax increase, National Journal’s Billy House reported today.

This is just the wackiest bunch of Republican kooks I have ever seen, in my entire life. No exaggeration.

You're not the only one thinking that. John Danforth said damn near the same thing:

Former Republican Senator: The GOP Presidential Field Is ‘Embarrassing’

"What have been the big applause lines in these debates? Well, a statement that the governor of Texas is responsible for killing 234 people on death row. Or that we favor torture. Or that we’re creating a fence on the Mexican border that electrocutes people when they try to cross it. Or when people show up at the emergency room at hospitals and they’re not insured don’t treat them. And that, I mean these are the big applause lines, people just hoop and holler when they hear all that. [...]

It doesn’t have anything to do with the Republican party that I was a part of. This is just totally different. And all of these people who are saying this, y’know, and claiming that, y’know, they’re for all this stuff, they also sort of ostentatiously say, “Oh, we’re very religious people. We really, we’re just very pious, Christian people.” They were for torture, and electrocution of the people on along the border and all of that. That doesn’t have anything to do with, is contrary to the Christianity that I understand."

re: #84 HoosierHoops

Charles has been documenting the Base of the GOP moving to the extreme right for 2 years now at least..
We can't be surprised by their choice of candidates... Newt makes perfect sense for the base..

If Romney were human instead of a bot, I'd feel sorry for him. No matter how much money he spends, how many endorsements he rakes in, or how hard he panders to the Base, they simply aren't having him. He reminds of a lonely nerd who spends a fortune to woo the girl of his dreams, only to watch her dump him for the first bad boy who rides up on his motorcycle.

I've read the David Donald biography of Lincoln and thought it was very good.

Cool, thanks.

But remember -- there's no such thing as class warfare:

Norquist Tells GOP That Raising Taxes On The Middle Class Doesn’t Count As A Tax Increase

Wonder what Grover thought of the GOP's supercommittee proposal, which would have cut the top bracket down to 28%, but made up the difference through tax increases and loophole closures for the poor and middle class?

The day somebody of importance in the GOP tells Norquest to STFU and STFD and is not immediately forced to offer an apology is the day I believe the GOP to be on the road to recovery.

Norquist has an awful lot of power for someone that's never been elected.

He's smart and he's actually willing to take a stand. And with Michelle Bachmann having self-immolated in Burning Stupid, Rick Perry suffering from Foot-In-Mouth Disease, and Herman Cain having been revealed as having zipper control problems, Newt is the last "Not-Romney" left standing.

Well, there is always Generic Republican :)

Same thing with Rush Limbaugh. Two armchair generals who are nothing but bullies and pimps for the select few.

Unfortunately, the only people willing to take him on are the lunatics accusing him of being a stealth jihadist because his wife is Muslim.

re: #87 Lidane

You're not the only one thinking that. John Danforth said damn near the same thing:

Former Republican Senator: The GOP Presidential Field Is ‘Embarrassing’

I like John Danforth. When he condemend the Christian right, it was quite telling since Mr. Danforth is also Father Danforth.

He was also one of the "youtube" questionners chosen at "random" by CNN in the GOP debates of 2007...

And to think, he was almost Bush's VP. What a difference that would have made.

Not enough adults left on the bus at this point.

re: #39 engineer dog

of course, newt wrote the new testament, you know. right after he defeated communism in congress

as a matter of fact, when chuck norris makes a new chuck norris joke, he has to steal it from newt gingrich

as a matter of fact, when newt gingrich says something that doesn't correspond to reality, reality changes to what newt said. and then apologizes to newt

That is a good example of arrogance. Well written!

Norquist actually has an impact on Politics, but I bet you'll have heard Saul Allinskys name mentioned on Fox and Limbaugh more over the last 3 years.

He was Bush's original choice, and was all set to go until Cheney got involved.

Damn didn't know this. See I was only in middle school in 2000. Followed the election but not that carefully. I think if he does that Bush wins fairly easily and without controversy.

I certainly remember hearing this at the time it happened, but I also believe that it has been reported since then.

If my (admittedly hazy) memory is correct, there is a discussion of this in Ron Suskind's book "The One Percent Doctrine", where you will learn more of the evils of Dick Cheney.
