The ‘Lie Detector Expert’ in Cain’s New Ad is a Donor to His Campaign

And he’s not a ‘lie detector expert’ either
Politics • Views: 33,444

Herman Cain’s latest ad is a real howler, as he claims he’s been vindicated of the charges of sexual harassment and affairs by “one of the foremost lie detector experts.”

But this “lie detector expert,” as we pointed out November 10th, is actually a private investigator who also happens to be a donor to Cain’s campaign.

He’s no “lie detector expert,” either, and he didn’t give Cain a polygraph test, although the ad hopes you’re dumb enough to believe that. He recorded one of Cain’s press conferences and ran it through a bogus “voice stress analysis” program, then declared Cain vindicated.

This is sheer pitiful desperation, folks. Who’s Herman Cain trying to fool at this point — America, or his wife?

As I concede at the end of the thread, the article (as especially the title) are somewhat misleading. NOAA released the 2011 version of their Arctic Report Card this week:

Arctic settles into new phase – warmer, greener, and less ice

PDF of the NOAA presentation

From the CSM summary article:

[...]

"We've got a new normal," says Don Perovich, a polar scientist with the US Army Corps of Engineers' Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory in Hanover, N.H. It's "a normal that has less ice, thinner ice, younger ice, a new normal where more light will be transmitted through the ice into the upper ocean. That has implications not just for the ice but for other components of the Arctic system."

Changes the report tracks "have long been predicted," notes Jonathan Overpeck, who is codirector of the Institute of the Environment at the University of Arizona in Tucson. "It is troubling how fast the change is proceeding. Of particular note is not just the sea-ice change, but the accelerating rate of Greenland Ice Sheet ice loss."

I imagine Cain's wife has a few new baubles and her hand firmly on the checkbook. Perhaps she and Newt's wife can exchange Tiffany gift catalogs while they smile at whatever incredible shit comes out of their husbands' mouths.

If she leaves him, he's sunk, and he knows it. I imagine he's already consulted with Tiger Woods and Jesse James and John Edwards about how this kind of thing turns out, and formed a new strategy: buy the wives really nice shit and deny it until the sex tape is leaked.

I wasn't aware of that.

Ron Paul's antipathy towards Jews goes way back:

A 1987 issue of Paul’s Investment Letter called Israel “an aggressive, national socialist state,” and a 1990 newsletter discussed the “tens of thousands of well-placed friends of Israel in all countries who are willing to wok [sic] for the Mossad in their area of expertise.” Of the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, a newsletter said, “Whether it was a setup by the Israeli Mossad, as a Jewish friend of mine suspects, or was truly a retaliation by the Islamic fundamentalists, matters little.”

Top GOP Strategist Admits He’s ‘Scared’ Of Occupy Wall Street Because It’s ‘Having An Impact’

Luntz told attendees that he’s “scared of this anti-Wall Street effort. I’m frightened to death.” The pollster warned that the movement is “having an impact on what the American people think of capitalism.” So the pollster offered some advice for them about how to fight back. Here’s a few snippets of what he said, according to Moody:

– Don’t Mention Capitalism: Luntz said that his polling research found that “The public…still prefers capitalism to socialism, but they think capitalism is immoral. And if we’re seen as defenders of quote, Wall Street, end quote, we’ve got a problem.”

Empathize With The 99 Percent Protesters: Luntz instructed attendees to tell protesters that they “get it”: “First off, here are three words for you all: ‘I get it.’ … ‘I get that you’re. I get that you’ve seen inequality. I get that you want to fix the system.”

– Don’t Say Bonus: Luntz told Republicans to re-frame the concept of the bonus payment — which bailed-out Wall Street doles out to its employees during holidays — as “pay for performance” instead.

Don’t Mention The Middle Class Because Americans Don’t Trust Republicans To Defend It: “They cannot win if the fight is on hardworking taxpayers,” Luntz instructed the audience. “We can say we defend the ‘middle class’ and the public will say, I’m not sure about that. But defending ‘hardworking taxpayers’ and Republicans have the advantage.”

– Don’t Talk About Taxing The Rich: Luntz reminded Republicans that Americans actually do want to tax the rich, so he reccommended they instead say that the government “takes from the rich.”

Frank Luntz is no minor pollster. He is considered to be one of the top political communications experts in the world, having provided consulting to many of the world’s top corporations, politicians, and special interest groups. That Luntz is admitting the impact of Occupy Wall Street and the 99 Percent and telling closed-door meetings of Republicans that it frightens him is a huge victory for the movement.

I played the second one. Missions felt too repetitive for me though character modification was fun. I'm getting the MGS HD collection for the PS3. Don't have a PSP so I never got to play Peace Walker. Love that series. Been playing it since I got MGS for the PSX when I was 12.

I stopped playing MGS after Sons of Liberty. When the cut-scenes start nearing feature-length status and crowd out gameplay, the folks in charge have lost sight of what it is they're creating.

Romney has to stay looking moderate for the GEneral and hope newt explodes or the convention splits between nutbars.

re: #191 windsagio

Lots of people have posted links to that story in the comments today. My personal favorite is the one from ClimateProgress:

So just as he did with his infamous 2003 global warming warming memo – which taught conservatives how to sound like they care about the issue while opposing all action — Luntz has some key advice for Republicans on how to pretend to care about regular people while continuing to screw them over.
...
Democrats do sometimes misuse the language and create euphemisms. All politicians do. But it is Luntz and his legion of conservative followers who have twisted the English language beyond recognition. They are the true Orwellians. The GOP parrot him as if they were reciting lessons in grammar school
...
So I’ll end with some old advice of Luntz’s:

"There’s a simple rule: You say it again, and you say it again, and you say it again, and you say it again, and you say it again, and then again and again and again and again, and about the time that you’re absolutely sick of saying it is about the time that your target audience has heard it for the first time."

Capitalism. Capitalism. Capitalism. Capitalism. Capitalism. Capitalism. Capitalism. Capitalism. Capitalism. Capitalism.

I think people are finally hearing it.

At this point, the only cannon fodder...er, candidate left is Newt. Santorum would sink as badly as Bachmann has, while Huntsman actually has something in his head other than a brain stem and thus is disqualified, and the only way Crazy Uncle Ron wins the nomination is if the GOP leadership suffers a collective stroke.

If Newt actually wins, then the campaign ads write themselves.

Yeah, the cruelty potential of using a taser to roast an NPC was hard to pass up. But otherwise, the gameplay was sort of "bleh." Not bad enough to deserve derision, but nothing I hadn't already seen. Think that's part of the reason why it's not gotten the upgrade/reboot other franchises have.

Yeah, a story is a big plus for me, but I agree with Yahtzee: The story and gameplay should go hand-in-hand. Neither should overshadow the other or be pumped up at the other's expense, and a great story can make up for bad gameplay but generally not vice versa.

Like Bioshock, which gets a bit too easy towards the end, and the final boss is such a let-down compared to earlier challenges, but the story is so engaging that it's in my top 5 list of all-time best games.

I'm of the mind that had Romney '08 run this year and won the nomination, he would have been a tough challenge for Obama. Not only because he would have been able to suck up a lot of independent votes, but also due simply to disgust in the far-Left for Obama at this point. Crazy or not, the idea of a primary challenge being mounted against Obama has gained momentum even amongst some pundits. Those who don't believe that there's a "better" candidate out there think that a piss-poor candidate running against Obama would "get him in line."

What I don't get is why '08 Romney was embraced by Limbaugh, Coulter, and now those same people are vehemently opposed to the guy.

There is no "true conservative," certainly not in this year's field. Even Luap Nor's all find with big government, so long as it's limited to enforcing his view of morality on us godless heathens. Which is what makes the wingnut embrace of Newt so hilarious, as people have already begun pointing out his support of an individual mandate, his bipartisan (with "Princess Nancy" Pelosi) posters against climate change, his support of the sort of immigration program that Bush and McCain supported, and so forth.

There's nobody in the field that can truly please the base, or at least won't find himself talking out of both sides of his mouth once the primaries end and the general begins.

Twitter just told me I need to scrape up another $1,000 next year to stay even.

“Tonight, Senate Republicans chose to raise taxes on nearly 160 million hardworking Americans because they refused to ask a few hundred thousand millionaires and billionaires to pay their fair share. They voted against a bill that would have not only extended the $1,000 tax cut for a typical family, but expanded that tax cut to put an extra $1,500 in their pockets next year, and given nearly six million small business owners new incentives to expand and hire. That is unacceptable. It makes absolutely no sense to raise taxes on the middle class at a time when so many are still trying to get back on their feet."

291 freetoken  Thu, Dec 1, 2011 8:37:46pm

The Vatican's senior scientist Brother Guy Consolmagno is ready to greet alien life and will be happy to baptize any of them should the opportunities present themselves.

Brother Guy Consolmagno has said it before, but reiterated his welcoming attitude in London this week. The Daily Telegraph reported Consolmagno's comments prior to his attendance at this week's British Science Festival.

"I’d be delighted if we found life elsewhere and delighted if we found intelligent life elsewhere," he said. But the odds of us finding it, of it being intelligent and us being able to communicate with it - when you add them up it’s probably not a practical question."

In 2009 the Pontifical Academy of Sciences held a conference in Rome on the study of life beyond Earth, with scientists and religious leaders.

Among them was Brother Consolmagno's colleague Father Jose Funes, a Jesuit astronomer who said at that time, "As a multiplicity of creatures exists on Earth, so there could be other beings, also intelligent, created by God. This does not conflict with our faith, because we cannot put limits on the creative freedom of God."

Some might be taken aback by those statements because of the men's association with the Vatican hierarchy but Consolmagno was a practicing lay scientist for a decade and a half prior to coming to the Catholic Church.

[...]

Mixing science and religious dogma doesn't prevent Consolmagno from taking a clear position on the theory of evolution and its detractors who tout creationism as the alternative theory.

"The word ( creationism) has been hijacked by a narrow group of Creationist fundamentalists in America to mean something it did not originally mean at all. It’s bad theology in that it turns God once again into the pagan god of thunder and lightning."

Bold topics for sure but the interest in exploring them indicates that Catholic hierarchy understands how science and religion can co-exist on this planet as well other places in the heavens.

That "narrow group of Creationist fundamentalists" however includes all but 2 of the GOP Presidential candidates.

I'm kind of surprised that Bachmann wasn't able to get farther than she did.

Her support went to Perry when he entered the fray looking like a formidable candidate. Then when he showed how dismally stupid he was, Cain caught on fire and the Base flocked to him. By that time, Bachmann's campaign had sort of started unraveling, and Gingrich had had good debate performances flying under the radar. After Perry and Cain showed what lightweights they were, the Base was hungry for someone who could go toe-to-toe with Romney or Obama in a debate, and that pretty much eliminates everyone in the field except Gingrich.

So two bills were up for consideration, one from each party. The Dem bill, which would have increased the payroll tax cut to 3.1% and extended it to employers, paid through a 3.25% surtax on incomes over $1 million, fell 9 votes short of cloture.

But the Repub bill, which would have just kept the current cut without any means of paying for it, crashed & burned at 78-20.

The rumbling from the Senate is that the reason that the Repub bill smacked into the ground so hard is because "fiscal conservatives" there were angry over nothing being done to pay for the continuation of the tax cut.

Why we're doomed #ivelostcount:

Ramesh fears India may earn 'deal breaker' tag at Durban

The Union Cabinet on Thursday approved India's tough stand on climate change issues despite rural development minister Jairam Ramesh cautioning against the country being seen as a "deal breaker" at the Durban climate talks. Environment minister Jayanthi Natarajan had proposed at the Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh that India should not give in to the pressure of the developed world and should say no to binding climate treaty.

Natarajan, while opting for a hard-line approach, had also proposed that India should push for second committment period for existing climate treaty --- Kyoto Protocol and ensure that new transparency regime on climate mitigation action was not intrusive to country's domestic policy.

According to sources, Ramesh, who was head of India climate negotiating team in 2010, reportedly expressed fear that India's tough stand can isolate it at the Durban talks. He was also of the view that India should keep its options flexible to avoid being described as a deal breaker.

[...]

Any AGW mitigation strategy has to include nations changing their "domestic policy" on many fronts. That's the whole problem to begin with.

I saw that. Brown's not a bad dude for a Republican but Warren would be the heir to the fighting liberalism that EMK represented.

Republican party discipline, especially in the Senate, makes it irrelevant what any particular one might prefer to vote for and against. They're *all* voting the way Mitch McConnell tells them to. Every time.

Exactly why I want her to lose, and I think terms like those you used to praise her can swiftly be turned against her. It should not be too hard to redefine her "fighting spirit" as "nastiness" and "fighting liberalism" can be reread as a "hostile and dogmatic leftism" (the latter of which is what I actually think "fighting liberalism" really is).

And that's just a salesman first thoughts. Given a few paid days, I could do far more in ideas for redefinition, and Karl Rove and Frank Lutz are even better at it than I am.

Kristin Cavallari And Jay Cutler's Engagement Back On For Real

And it is bigger news if you're a Bears fan. Now, if only the former reality star has some trick to get Cutler's thumb in working order by Christmas. Because if he was able to play even part of the game against the Packers (and didn't get hurt again), she truly would win over the Bears and their fans.

Go Bears!

It keeps getting better.

There is Republican Jewish debate next Wednesday the 7th and all the regulars are committed except for one - Ron Paul. The sponsors said he was not welcome since he is too "extreme".

Odd that such a "debate" exists and that they deliberately exclude the non-interventionist Ron Paul as an extremist.

The Anti-Zionists on the Right (and – this is the odd thing - Left) rally around Ron Paul, pretty much. It's not odd at all, really.

True that. Ron Paul has made it very clear he's no friend of Israel nor does he share any real concerns with American Jews. Letting him attend would just be annoying the audience with someone they already think (correctly) is an ass. Ron Paul cannot actually win the nomination, either, so it's not like there's an actual loss. And besides, they've still got Bachmann to supply any needed insanity.

I think it's going to be hard to define her as nasty when she responded probably the best I've seen a politician on either side to a heckler. I wouldn't have faulted here at all if she got pissed as hell at the guy who dalled her a socialist whore. . Sure they could define her as too liberal but Massachusetts after all so that could backfire too. And I don't see anything that suggests she's a leftist. Big difference between being a staunch liberal than leftist. Brown only has that seat because Coakley was terrible. He ran a good campaign I grant him but you can't tell me that Coakley's incompetence is why he's there by and large.

Pffft

Brown may not be a bad guy, but he still supports the endless fillabusters which keep the Senate from doing anything at all

And the Rove/Luntz stuff will not work against a female in MA. However, the fact that Forbes magazine declared that Brown is "Wall Street's favorite Senator" will be very effective.

I doubt it will work either. Really, what Brown will do and I've seen senators from both parties who represent states that very much vote different than they do in presidential politics is emphasize his moderate stances and bring up issues where he shares in this case a position with President Obama. Rovian and Luntzian tactics seem like a recipe for disaster in Massachusetts. So, I think Brown's most smart political move would be to distance himself from the national party and stay the hell away from Luntz/Rove. He wants to sell himself as an "Independent voice" then it's wise not to have the former top campaign strategist of a president who was never popular in that state.

Yeah, I didn't know much about her until recently but alot of my friends really like her. I saw one of her ads. Probably one of the better ones. I don't know why DF thinks she's this dogmatic leftist. She believes strongly in what she believes but I don't see a close minded woman which is what dogmatic means to me. And by the way, I was just saying since Brown is running in Mass, he will try to tie himself to Obama somehow. You saw it in the Bush years where a representative or senator from a red state would emphasize that he worked with Bush.

A variation on it will work just fine. It wouldn't be the same thing as is used in other states like Florida, but linking her to taxation and stagnation might work very well.

I should point out that when Rove's minions ran some negative ads against Warren a month or so ago, Brown public ally criticized them and suggested that they stay out of MA.

Voters here don't respond very well to negative ads.

It's not Cain--the 999 Fund is one of those Super PAC deals that "supports" a candidate by doing things that "aren't authorized" by the candidate.

Americans for Herman Cain has established a non-connected political committee that is established and registered with the Federal Election Commission. The committee supports the Federal candidacy of Herman Cain for President and is not a separate segregated fund; a party committee; nor is the committee authorized by any candidate or candidate committee. Paid for by 9-9-9 Fund. UNLIMITED contributions from either personal or corporate funds are acceptable.

I imagine this ad is one way they're trying to burn through those UNLIMITED contributions as quickly as possible. Other ways possibly involve tequila.

re: #152 Ojoe

Yeah I know, that was bad.

But I can't stand the guy, especially after he said that if you're not employed and rich, it is your own fault because you haven't worked hard enough.

That fails the compassion test.

I work at a food bank (day job) and believe me there are plenty of people coming through the line these days with no job and it is not because they haven't worked hard all their lives.

I despise Cain for that one remark alone.

Eh. I don't. I despise him for plenty of other reasons, but not that one remark.

All humans have an inherent psychological tendency to maximize our self-perceived merits by attributing success to our own doing and failure to someone else's. It's a basic evolutionary mechanic to preserve a sufficient sense of self-worth to get through the day.

Look at someone like Limbaugh, who rants and raves about being entirely self-made. Never relying on the government for anything. Ever! You know, except the public school education, the student loans, the public transit, the safe drinking water and food, the prescription drugs that don't kill you, the anti-trust laws that prevented competitors from destroying you when just starting out, your car that doesn't explode when they get hit, the FDIC guarantees for your bank account, the cops and firemen who kept you from being robbed... etc, etc.

Particularly wise, intelligent, or otherwise decent humans realize this inherent bias and take mental preparation to avoid falling into the trap.

Mentally weak, shallow, opportunistic idiots like Cain do not. But the statement is just a symptom of the overall problem. Not the problem in and of itself.
