Someone just sent me to this on Facebook. Anyone know anything about this scale? Is it considered significant? Thought it was quite interesting.
Here is what I have found....
[Link: www.clearlycultural.com...]
Hofstede’s Power distance Index measures the extent to which the less powerful members of organizations and institutions (like the family) accept and expect that power is distributed unequally. This represents inequality (more versus less), but defined from below, not from above. It suggests that a society’s level of inequality is endorsed by the followers as much as by the leaders.
For example, Germany has a 35 on the cultural scale of Hofstede’s analysis. Compared to Arab countries where the power distance is very high (80) and Austria where it very low (11), Germany is somewhat in the middle. Germany does not have a large gap between the wealthy and the poor, but have a strong belief in equality for each citizen. Germans have the opportunity to rise in society.
On the other hand, the power distance in the United States scores a 40 on the cultural scale. The United States exhibits a more unequal distribution of wealth compared to German society. As the years go by it seems that the distance between the ‘have’ and ‘have-nots’ grows larger and larger.

It strikes me as something a PhD thesis might encompass, in order to somehow convince others that the student has discovered something important.
Frankly, I am highly dismissive of any approach that tries to use a single number to describe the complexity of a large system. A single number is chosen because the human brain more readily grasps integers of low magnitude. But a system such as human civilization isn't something that lends itself well to being described as such.

The person who sent it to me wanted me to check out Israel's score.
Which will come as no surprise to anyone who's ever met an Israeli.

Denmark is also quite low. Austria, for whatever reason, seems to be the lowest, at least that I could find. I'm interested that they seem to have distinctly lower scores than nations in their immediate area that I think of as having fairly similar cultures and economies.

The results desired by the author should be highly mathematical in nature. Analyzing census data followed by analyzing tax data. One is open, the other not so much, especially the 1% folks have ninja skills when it comes to hiding wealth. Public opinion probably would be pretty damn close to the actual numbers.

There is a cult of ignorance in the United States, and there always has been. It is a tradition that is old as America: we had an inferiority compley towards Europe, which was more advanced culturally and scientifically.
For that, we saw ourselves as morally superior to those decadent, effete, over-educated Europeans.
I appreciate American's disinclination towards elitism and our preference for folksy, down-to-earth anti-intellectualism, but lately it has turned into a nearly complete rejection of science and education.

Adventurer Mark Moffett has found the world’s biggest insect - which is so huge it can eat carrots. The former park ranger discovered the giant weta up a tree and his real life Bugs Bunny has now been declared the largest ever found. He came across the cricket-like creature, which has a wing span of seven inches, after two days of searching on a tiny island. The creepy crawly is only found on Little Barrier Island, in New Zealand. The species was wiped off the mainland by rats accidentally introduced by Europeans.

I live in Florida, where we have BIG cockroaches.
Q. How big are they?
A. They are so big that, when they back up, they are required by federal law to emit warning beeps.
These cockroaches could harm Florida's image. But we Floridians solved that problem by giving them a new name, "palmetto bugs, " which makes them sound cute and harmless. So when a guest walks into a Florida kitchen and screams at the sight of an insect the size of Charles Barkley, we say: "Don't worry! It's just a palmetto bug!" And then we and our guest have a hearty laugh, because we know there's nothing to worry about, as long as we do not make any sudden moves toward the palmetto bug's sandwich.

This op-ed by former SEIU president Andy Stern in the Wall Street Journal called "China's Superior Economic Model " has Rush Limbaugh going full Cold War:
What Andy Stern calls an economic model is actually a political philosophy that makes the individual subservient to the state. So here we are. We finally reached a point here, ladies and gentlemen -- and this is something I have been warning you people about for two-plus decades -- where liberals are comfortable citing communism as the endgame. Andy Stern, he proudly declares it! He's singing the tune; he's singing the hymn. It's in the Wall Street Journal: We need to become communist! They have been doing it and saying it for two plus decades. This is progress to people like Barack Obama and Andy Stern, and this is why Obama does want a second term. I don't buy this notion that he's not interested. So the progressives, because of the panic that they're in, are finally being honest here.
It's a movement towards an all-powerful, centralized state government, unencumbered by a constitution, unencumbered by a Bill of Rights, unencumbered by a separation-of powers. This is what Andy Stern is saying: Screw a Constitution! Screw limits on a grand pooh-bah leader. We need us, the smart people, able to move mountains with a wave of our wand. So we're in the process here of defining, folks, the larger purpose of the 2012 elections. It isn't just Barack Obama versus a generic Republican. This election is about remaining a free people. This election is about the individual versus the state. This upcoming election is about the public sector versus the private sector. This upcoming election is about state control of property versus individuals controlling their own private property.
This is an election of the makers versus the takers, and what hangs in the balance really is the American way of life. These people -- Andy Stern, Barack Obama, and they're cronies -- are on the verge of rendering the American Revolution null and void, and the regime's minions know it. They're one election away from remaking America. Obama's even said it. We've got the sound bite coming up here somewhere. He's telling these people in the Occupy crowd, "Hey, it's worse than I thought. We need four more years. You've got to give me four more years to make sure that my question plan is fully implemented." Four more years to finish the job, four more years to finish them off. (interruption) Well, Snerdley's in there laughing, but I'm telling you: This is how I see it. Four more years to finish the job. Four more years to fully implement Obamacare. What's so important about that?
Because that's ballgame.
I have this Daniel Hannan piece. It ran at the Telegraph, UK Telegraph.com. "What has happened since 2008 is not capitalism. In a capitalist system, bad banks would have been allowed to fail, their profitable operations bought by more efficient competitors. Shareholders, bondholders and some depositors would have lost money, but taxpayers would not have contributed a penny. ... Those of us who believe in small government are not motivated by the desire to make the rich richer. We’re really not. We are, in most cases, nowhere near having to pay top rate tax ourselves; our most eloquent champions over the years have been modestly paid academics. We believe that economic freedom will enrich the country as a whole." This is in Hannan's memo to the Occupy people. He's just talking to, you know, deaf ears, trying to explain conservatism to them. They're not listening. They don't care to know.
That would require work.

Moonbats at Amnesty International are still trying to put GWB in jail...
Group calls for Bush arrest
Amnesty International is calling for the arrest of former President George W. Bush while he is traveling overseas in Africa.
The human rights group issued a statement Thursday calling for the governments of Ethiopia, Tanzania or Zambia to take the former president into custody. According to Amnesty, the 43rd president is complicit in torture conducted by the United States during his administration and should be held pending an international investigation.
"International law requires that there be no safe haven for those responsible for torture; Ethiopia, Tanzania and Zambia must seize this opportunity to fulfill their obligations and end the impunity George W. Bush has so far enjoyed," said Amnesty senior legal adviser Matt Pollard in a statement.
Bush is traveling overseas in Africa to raise awareness for HIV/AIDS, cervical and breast cancer across the continent. He participated today via satellite in a Worlds AIDS Day event put on by the ONE Campaign and (RED) where he was joined by President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton.

Iran's ambitious Quds Force chief linked to British embassy attack
LONDON: The storming of the British embassy in Tehran this week has further revealed the role of a growing, radical actor in Iranian foreign policy: the country's Quds Force.
The force is the external operations wing of Iran's Revolutionary Guard, one of the regime's most powerful institutions, with extensive economic and financial interests across the country.
Some of the rioters at the embassy held aloft pictures of the Quds Force commander, Major General Qassem Suleimani, around whom a personality cult is developing. There are claims that a known Quds commander was in the crowd.

True, it is, yet if these organizations and Journalists want the high status they seem think they deserve, they should overcome their fear.
I'm sorry, that brush is too broad. There is nothing wrong with a reporter who stays inside his own safe, democratic country and reports on conditions there. I have no idea what you mean by the respect that 'they' seem to think they deserve. I'm no lover of the media, but I think you're confusing the mass media as a corporate entity with the actual individual reporters and investigators.

Amnesty Int'l Finland: Israel scum state
BERLIN – The head of Amnesty International’s Finnish branch, Frank Johansson, told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday that he stands by his statement that Israel is a “scum state.”
Writing in his blog, which appears on the Web site of Finland’s third largest newspaper Iltalehti, Johansson wrote on Monday that “A friend of mine who works in Israel was visiting [and] while piling wood in the shed, we got to [talking about] his favourite topic. [After] several years of residence in the Holy Land, he has come to the conclusion that ‘Israel is a scum state.’ Based on my own visit[s], which occurred during the 1970s and for the last time in the 1990s, I agree.”

Perhaps I could say, in general, I am always pleasantly surprised when I visit websites of different organizations The Corporate Media Product gives us such little information on which to form opinions.
Even visiting the White House Office of Science and Technology website last night was an eye-opener. There is a lot of good information out there. A lot of people working to do the right thing.
I don't think the MSM does a good job of telling us that.

Amnesty approves controversial anti-Israel event
LONDON – Amnesty International is allowing a controversial event deemed as anti-Israel to take place despite widespread calls to cancel the event.
Protesters were set to mass outside Amnesty’s headquarters in London on Monday night following its decision to allow the event “Complicity in Oppression: Do the Media Aid Israel?” to go ahead.
The event was organized by London-based magazine Middle East Monitor Online (MEMO)and the campaign group Palestine Solidarity Campaign.
A spokesman for Amnesty told The Jerusalem Post on Monday that the event will take place since the event’s organizers responded to their concerns about MEMO and the participation of Abdel Bari Atwan, editor of the London-based al- Quds al-Arabi newspaper.
In 2007, Atwan declared that he would “dance with delight” in Trafalgar Square if Iran attacked Israel, and in 2008, he said the terrorist attack on the Mercaz HaRav yeshiva, in which eight students were killed, “was justified” as it was responsible for “hatching Israeli extremists and fundamentalists.”

Oh, that really sucks. How accurate is this 8.6% number?
Why do you only bold the part that shows people dropping out of the workforce but ignore that more people out of work found jobs?
Regardless, the rate is 8.6. A lot of it is due to upward revisions going back several months, including the big goose egg in August.

Amnesty’s obsession with Israel
Even in a month when war raged in Georgia, Amnesty International continued to focus on the Gaza Strip, persistently blaming Israel for ongoing Palestinian hardship.
Amnesty, in fact, issued harsher condemnations of Israel than of any party to the Georgian conflict. With a ceasefire holding between Israel and Hamas, resulting in a period of calm, Amnesty stubbornly continued to spew hollow publications repeating outdated allegations.
Moreover, Amnesty took pride in its relentless criticism of Israel, while the rest of the world rightly concerned itself with the unfolding crisis in Georgia. In a press release, the organization boasted: “With the ceasefire holding, the suffering in Gaza has fallen off the international news agenda. However, Amnesty International members continue to campaign.” This “explanation” merely highlights Amnesty's obsession with Israel, regardless of the reality on the ground.

The doubts on sustainability. I think an Egypt run by the MB and even more radical Salifist groups would be a disaster for far too many reasons to list. I'm not sure what the possibilities are but I don't think it's likely that the military is just going to drop the ball and walk away. It's the same GOP ignorance that got Sarah Palin on McCain's ticket in 2008.
Hillary Clinton lost the nomination, so the GOP looked for a photogenic Republican woman as a generic substitute, figuring that any woman would do to pull in support. With Cain, someone on the right figured that any black guy would do to run against Obama.
It's that lack of understanding that will doom the GOP into completely alienating women and minorities and being a regional white party.

Like when they ran Alan Keyes against Obama in the Illinois Senate race?

What I love about the whole thing is Cain's downfall is largely tied to his woman problems. So who is the candidate gaining most in the primary? Why serial adulterer Newt who confuses sex drive with passion for country. I guess Newt respects women more than Cain if you can believe his Ali G interview.
My guess is that Newt's got two advantages over Cain - well, three if you think race matters, but I'm speaking about the woman problem issue.
First, it's old news.
Second, he didn't pretend it didn't happen, nor try to bury his accusers in BS.
I'm beginning these two facts are what will prevent his downward plunge in echo of all the other NR (Not Romney) candidates.

Yep makes sense. A governor halfway through her term of one of the smallest states(in terms of economy and population). One thing I saw from a Palin fan that I loved was them saying "But she's governor of our largest state." Had to politely remind them that Alaska is only biggest in physical size which has no bearing on anything political. And then Carly Firoina suggesting she was more experienced than Biden by virtue of being governor and totally ignoring Biden got in the Senate when Palin was a 8 year old.

They don't seem to get that quality matters. Palin was a pathetic substitute for Hillary Clinton, just based on qualifications alone. It was downright insulting to have the GOP so blatantly try to pass her off as a stand-in just because she also had lady parts.
Cain is an insult to minority conservatives. He's proof that the GOP doesn't care about running quality candidates as long as they have someone they can point at and say, "See! We've got black Republicans! We're enlightened!"

This crazy guy (who served on the BoD of AI USA for some time):
Indeed, I’ve gone on the Internet [and read] sections of some of their reports when it comes to Israel, and the people who do these reports over in London and here in the United States, they’re very clever, sharp, and sophisticated people. They know exactly what they’re doing. And if you go through it, you’ll see that basically , it supports the Israeli party line on whatever the issue is. Or finally, after many years of outing them on this, now they’re no longer supporting it but they’re not doing much. At least the thing on Jenin here is not supporting any Israeli party line. But previous reports in the not too distant past, if you go through them carefully, you’ll see that their legal characterizations of the nature of the conflict, the status of these territories, the status of Jerusalem, tracks the Israeli party line.

That whole line of attack made me laugh. Biden was elected to the Senate when my mother was pregnant with me and when Sarah was playing with dolls. The guy's got a Rolodex most people would kill for, and Palin was more experienced? ROFL.
Again-- it goes back to the GOP thinking that any old candidate will do as long as they meet the superficial criteria. In their world, Hillary was a woman and Sarah's a woman, so by default, women are going to vote for Sarah. Also, Barack Obama is black and Herman Cain is black, so clearly, black people are going to automatically vote for Cain.

I loved the right's sudden embrace of feminism and resorting to calling Obama and Biden sexists when they criticized Palin. The most hilarious were those who called her a VPILF and Limbaugh's nickname for her was "Governor Babe."
"Oh you're so hot, tell me why we need to drill baby drill and why Obama's a socialist who hates America." She was very divisive. I resented the hell of her coming to my state, a state I have no doubt she never or seldom visited before the election and going to a Republican stronghold and talking about how glad she was to live in the "Real Virginia." Another McCain surrogate pulled the same crap as did his brother.

Marshall I read was none too happy when he found out who his successor was. Anyhow, him and Bill Brennan, two of my favorite modern justices. They get it. The point of a HC is not to get harangue Black voters into mashing the button for them, and never was. A Black constituency is the last thing on earth those dumb bigots want.
The only thing they understand is that we all look alike to them. Any old incompetent will do, because that's precisely how they see us -- symbols to be used in their little games of racial redemption, without actually ever having to redeem themselves for their legendary transgressions.
Their constituency is the only one dumb enough to fall for it, too.

I'm a liberal and I would rather read Scalia's legal opinions all day instead of Thomas. For all his flaws, at least Scalia gives actual thought to the matters before the Court. Thomas is off in his own little world.
I recently finished a massive research paper on the SCOTUS decision about the California violent video games law that got struck down. That case shows just how pathetic of a jurist Clarence Thomas is. His entire dissent has nothing to do with the law being debated. It doesn't cite any federal statues or case law to make his point. It's a total fantasy. Even Scalia all but says that Thomas pulled it out of his ass in the footnotes of the majority opinon.

Oh, I agree, but I think it's important to differentiate two races, the primary and the general.
In the general his history will hurt him a lot. But in the primary...
Look, there's a common meme that the Republicans are engaged in a war against women. It's not quite accurate. What it is, is that many, perhaps most current Republicans hold contempt for women. SOME women can be as good as men, but for the most part women are just bedwarmers and entertainment and procreational tools who can do good things f properly supervised or if it's not too mentally challenging.
Yes, Newt gave one of his ex wives divorce papers while she was recovering from cancer surgery.
But that was 'just bad timing'. He was right, she didn't look like a president's wife and she was going to suck all his energy while he was engaged in a hard fight. And he's learned his lesson - he won't be giving divorce papers to an ex in the hospital any more.
I won't vote for him. But then, none of the candidates, not even Huntsman, are as acceptable to me as Obama. So I can look at the primary with a bit of detachment.
I think Gingrich has a real chance of being the Not Romney selection.
The real question in my mind is Luap Nor. He's pulling 15% or so, which is enough to make him a spoiler given the distribution of delegates this time around. There's still a chance of a brokered convention because of him.

I'm no expert on this, but i think that Thomas has a pretty consistent philosophy. Sadly, it involves rolling back society to the 1840's.
But it has lead him to some surprising conclusions, like the one a few years ago when he stated that he could not imagine the founding fathers having any law against the growing, possession, or smoking of pot.
Scalia is just a political hack. His sarcasm and pugnacious stances are no substitute for reason, and his reputation as an intellectual is founded on the same idiotic view that Newt's is.

The 1840's? You're being generous.
In the video game case, his entire dissent rests on the premise that parents have the absolute right to control their children and, more to the point, control access to their children. This means that parents also have the absolute right to have the state control access to their children, even if it means restricting speech because the Founders would never have understood the freedom of speech to include a right to speak to children without going through their parents.
His rationale? Well, the Pilgrims and the Founders lived in a patriarchy where children were seen, but not heard. So, yeah. Censor away!
