The California Syndrome (kind of like the China Syndrome, only without the hot and sexy Jane Fonda - hummana-hummana...)

TOKYO — Molten nuclear fuel at Japan's Fukushima plant might have eaten two thirds of the way through a concrete containment base, its operator said, citing a new simulation of the extent of the March disaster.

Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) said their latest calculations showed the fuel inside the No. 1 reactor at the tsunami-hit plant could have melted entirely, dropping through its inner casing and eroding a concrete base.

In the worst-case scenario, the molten fuel could have reached as far as 65 centimetres (2 feet) through the concrete, leaving it only 37 centimetres short of the outer steel casing, the report, released Wednesday, said.

Until now, TEPCO had said some fuel melted through the inner pressure vessel and dropped to the containment vessel, without saying how much and what it did to the concrete, citing a lack of data.

"Almost no fuel remains at its original position," TEPCO said in the report.

On Black Friday placed an order through Apple Store (one of their few actually good deals, on a hard drive).

It was supposed to be delivered yesterday... UPS showed it on the truck out for delivery. Didn't show up... so I look it up on the UPS database, and UPS said Apple requested return of item. Strange.

So I called Apple today. What a mess. Their computer does all the talking... finally got a live body. They don't know why the item showed up back on their dock... in fact they only knew it about if from the UPS database after I called. Oh, and I have to stay on the line because once I hang up the poor girl gets another call and has to stop working on my order.

That's right, they will only pay attention to me while I am on the phone. No online interaction. No email. Have to hang on... she has to get her supervisor... he's not paying attention... she says he finally approves a "return"... I say I didn't even get it in the first place... she knows that but says there is no other way.

So now the online Apple database tells me that I have until Dec 16th to return my item... which I never got in the first place. Apparently the Apple order database doesn't have an entry for "we messed up" so they have to pretend I want to return an item...

This all from a company that supposedly likes to think of itself as the world's leading consumer tech company.

I have no luck with on-the-phone service with any company other than Citibank and Audible.com. With Apple products I just go to the store and make them fix it. If I do have trouble with Citibank, I go to the branch and make someone there call for me. Seems to work better that way.

WTF Bloomberg?

Bloomberg: If I Had It My Way I’d Dump Half Of NYC’s Teachers

“Education is very much, I’ve always thought, just like the real estate business. Real estate business, there are three things that matter: location, location, location is the old joke,” Bloomberg said. “Well in education, it is: quality of teacher, quality of teacher, quality of teacher. And I would, if I had the ability - which nobody does really – to just design a system and say, ‘ex cathedra, this is what we’re going to do,’ you would cut the number of teachers in half, but you would double the compensation of them and you would weed out all the bad ones and just have good teachers. And double the class size with a better teacher is a good deal for the students.”

That’s right. The mayor told people at a Massachusetts Institute of Technology conference it would be far better to run city schools with way fewer people. And, by the way, on the billionaire’s perfect planet that would mean cramming more kids into each classroom.

Andrea Spencer is dean of the School of Education at Pace University.

“When I heard the statement I was really shocked,” Spencer said. “There is absolutely no evidence to suggest that half of the teachers in any system are ineffective. What there is evidence to support is the fact that larger classes really place detriments in the way of learning.”

Hmm... IMO "real estate" is pretty low on the professions that I consider honorable, sitting below politicians and pimps.

Bloomberg is absurd because the entire GOP establishment is in melt down over their obvious capitulation to the real idiots, and now they are having to live with the consequence. What we're seeing is the implosion of the oldest political party in the US.

Occupy L.A., wind damage may add to $72-million city budget shortfall

....the shortfall could grow once city officials calculate the cost of cleanup in the wake of this week's ferocious windstorms and the two-month encampment outside City Hall by Occupy L.A.

"These are unforeseen problems that we have to pay for one way or the other," Santana said in an interview. “The timing was not helpful.”

Santana called for reductions of $4 million to the Los Angeles Police Department, $1.7 million to the city attorney's office and $1.3 million to the Bureau of Street Services, which is charged with maintaining the city's 6,500-mile network of roads and highways. He said he needs four more weeks to find an additional $20 million in potential cuts for this year's budget, which covers the 12-month period ending June 30.

WTF Bloomberg?

Bloomberg: If I Had It My Way I’d Dump Half Of NYC’s Teachers

Bloomberg is obviously many years removed from ever sitting in a classroom.

I've had some excellent teachers in my time, and every single one of them what made them excellent was what happened during the 10-15 minutes or so of extra help I needed (and could get) every week in addition to the class lecture. But if that teacher has 50 kids... ain't gonna happen.

(and this need for 10 minutes extra -- that's speaking as a brighter-than-average, well-fed kid from a house full of books and unlimited parental encouragement and assistance. I can only imagine how much personalized instruction a kid needs who doesn't have my advantages).

I lived through a situation wherein some people I had known for 35+ years emailed me 100s of times, at all times of the day or night, and I emailed them back based upon the picture of the world they encouraged - even agreeing with me that I was right and the attacks on me were unjust. There were gifts exchanged, along with messages like "my affection knows no bounds", other terms of endearment based upon positive associations, dinners and other supports. Not only was the truth non-sexual where I was concerned, these people were trying to destroy me while covering up for a convicted child molester - in a community youth activity. They were working DIRECTLY with the people attacking me. After I found the long-buried court documents proving the truth, they publicly reverted to working right alongside my attackers

Bryan Fischer dislikes Newt so much he actually says something nice about Obama

reading the freepers and others, i don't see the evidence that newt is popular with them the same way that cain was when he was on top in the polls

Putting Newt in front of a camera/mic is like handing your 5 year old a handgun unsupervised. No telling what direction the bullets will fly.

I’m old enough to remember, what a creep Newt was, and probably still is. His treatment of former wives is really mean.

>>>>Newt is a proven mover and shaker>>>>

If by "mover and shaker", you really mean "the guy who runs around with a lampshade on his head at parties", then yes.

I no longer have a candidate to support. I don’t like any of them really. I am hoping for a contested convention at this point.

While I agree with you on the dangers of the unexplored Newt, there is still no way in cowboy hell that I am going to vote for a Rick Perry.

Newt Gingrich, a similarly farcical character

"farcical" is an appropriate word

farce
late 14c., "force-meat, stuffing;" 1520s, as a type of dramatic work, from M.Fr. farce "comic interlude in a mystery play" (16c.), lit. "stuffing," from O.Fr. farcir "to stuff," (13c.), from L. farcire "to stuff, cram,"

9/11 put the final nail in the coffin of the previous protest-control regime. By the time of the Free Trade of the Americas anti-globalization protests in Miami broke out eight years ago this week, an entirely new model of taking on protests had emerged. People called it the Miami model. It was heavily militarized and very forceful. The police had armored personnel carriers.

This is what it looked like on the ground in Miami in 2003. Occupy protests have shown that variations on this unprecedented show of force have now become commonplace.

One of the proponents of making no exceptions for Americans, Senator Lindsey Graham, Republican of South Carolina, said it would be “crazy” to exempt Qaeda suspects who are Americans and are arrested inside the country from battlefield-style detention. He argued that, to stop other attacks, they must be interrogated without the protections of the civilian criminal justice system.

Citizens who are suspected of joining Al Qaeda are opening themselves up “to imprisonment and death,” Mr. Graham said, adding, “And when they say, ‘I want my lawyer,’ you tell them: ‘Shut up. You don’t get a lawyer. You are an enemy combatant, and we are going to talk to you about why you joined Al Qaeda.’ ”

I actually had a teen in my Revolutionary War class today try to identify the masons as a religion.

I explained that George Washington was an Anglican, Benjamin Franklin was, um, nominally a Separatist Anglican (I think), Joseph Smith was obviously a Mormon (which she should have known), the Marquis de Lafayette was whatever they are in France (Catholic, right?), and my grandfather was a Presbyterian.

It's funny that most of us can only name famous masons from the colonial era, but the list is quite long. It seems there is an Antarctic Lodge.

They have 24/7 armed guys downstairs, so in the amount of 30 seconds you'll have somebody up here. Once in here, you have to have two people with two keys and two different PIN numbers, and that's what you have to have. This safe is bolted down and there is no way anybody can get in here unauthorized without us knowing about it."

I didn't check but I'm pretty damn sure Ben was a Quaker.

Edit: and per wiki it's... unclear, everyone thought he was a member of their religion:

Franklin was a proponent of religion in general. He prayed to "Powerful Goodness" and referred to God as "the infinite". John Adams noted that Franklin was a mirror in which people saw their own religion: "The Catholics thought him almost a Catholic. The Church of England claimed him as one of them. The Presbyterians thought him half a Presbyterian, and the Friends believed him a wet Quaker." Whatever else Franklin was, concludes Morgan, "he was a true champion of generic religion."

re: #170 EmmmieG

I actually had a teen in my Revolutionary War class today try to identify the masons as a religion.

I explained that George Washington was an Anglican, Benjamin Franklin was, um, nominally a Separatist Anglican (I think), Joseph Smith was obviously a Mormon (which she should have known), the Marquis de Lafayette was whatever they are in France (Catholic, right?), and my grandfather was a Presbyterian.

It's funny that most of us can only name famous masons from the colonial era, but the list is quite long. It seems there is an Antarctic Lodge.

Nuh-ope.

He was born in Boston, and his parents had to lie about what day he was born on because he was born on a Sunday, and there was a superstition that the day you were born on was the day you were conceived on.

He moved to Philadelphia to get away from his brother, and became identified with the city forever, but he was born in Boston.

Monstrous NYPD Eats Occupy Wall Street’s Pizza

When a bunch of Occupy Wall Street protesters were arrested during a World AIDS Day protest, Thursday, NYPD ate all the pizza that was delivered to them by supporters, with a grin.
The press release by the AIDS advocacy group Housing Works is an entertaining read. Apparently NYPD belatedly offered to buy more pizza, after their cops ate the two large cheese pizzas from Mini Munchies. (The police say they ate the pizza by "mistake." Right, and Lt. Pike thought he was spraying those UC Davis students with seltzer water.)
"We weren't touching their dirty pizza," protester Charles King said in the press release. "We knew it was cheesy hush money."

"perspective"

They reveal that precinct bosses threaten street cops if they don't make their quotas of arrests and stop-and-frisks, but also tell them not to take certain robbery reports in order to manipulate crime statistics. The tapes also refer to command officers calling crime victims directly to intimidate them about their complaints.

As a result, the tapes show, the rank-and-file NYPD street cop experiences enormous pressure in a strange catch-22: He or she is expected to maintain high "activity"—including stop-and-frisks—but, paradoxically, to record fewer actual crimes.

did you miss reading the part where I said the 'contraband' thing is the really unpleasant bit, or are you sticking with the 'kitchen sink' element specifically because its a better talking point for ridicule?

They won't pull out. trump is a good (from a ratings point of view) bit of stunt casting. He'll yell and be pompous a bit and the spectacle will draw viewers.

So very presidential. Seriously, I bet there will be actual rehearsals. Steve's am idol politics, but not from the party he implied.

actually I might need to come back to you guys, I have a concert tonight, and I'm going to dinner first, so there are things to do!

GMTA

Also, I'd like a debate moderated by Simon Cowell. It would have to be for Britain*, but a debate between 3 prospective PMs with Simon cracking the whip would be fun.

*: While the image of Simon smacking down US presidential candidates is fun, he remains a foreigner and US presidential debates should be moderated by Americans. Not for chauvinistic reasons, but simply because it is our country.

The Troll Hammer is still a good thing, WUB. It got overused, but I have still had occasion to use it this year when someone veered into Israel-bashing. Used in its place, it has great value.
