The Herman Cain Wrap-Up

It was beauty killed the beast
Politics • Views: 20,815

In the end, it wasn’t his stunning bigotry, total ignorance of foreign affairs, or laughable economic ideas that brought down Herman Cain. It was a consensual affair between two adults.

But at least he went out on a note of pure class, with a profound quote from Donna Summer’s theme song for “Pokémon: The Movie 2000.”

So ends perhaps the most hilarious chapter ever in the saga of right wing politics.

And I drink to you Mr. Uzbekibekibeki President. And the idea that it’s constitutional to close mosques.

I’m still gonna vote for him. I’ll write his name on the ballot. He is the right guy to run the country.

I’m already nostalgic. I’ll always remember where I was when I first saw Mark Block taking a ragged hit off a cigarette in a Herman Cain political ad.

The stock photo of “four happy young women with their thumbs up” on Cain’s “Women for Cain” page has been replaced with a picture of Cain and his wife.

A write-in for a primary? Are you serious?

Especially when there are so many kooks still available to choose from, that seems like a waste.

The thing is, the “consensual affair” was more the straw that broke the camel’s back. I think the not-quite-so-consensual allegations of sexual harassment were a bit more damaging overall.

Yeah, but at the same time, the allegations had actually begun to ebb and his campaign might have been able to weather it for another month. The 13 year long consensual affair that he kept quiet from his wife pretty much served to reopen the wound and rub a mountain of salt into it.

‘OWS to become major challenge for US’

“[The protests] have freedom-seeking and anti-arrogance dimensions and aim to oppose the hegemonic system which has humiliated people for many years,” Fars News Agency quoted her as saying.

Elahian noted that in a recent visit to the United States, the Iranian human rights delegation visited New York’s Zuccotti park, where OWS movement started, and talked to American protesters.

She described the park as having been surrounded by police cars and said people took refuge in nearby churches before going back to the park.

“Due to extreme cold, some of them nearly froze to death…but their [high] motivation and steadfastness proves that their movement will continue,” she added.

They had a report earlier that the government was using snipers to shoot OWS protesters.

It’s kind of par for the course that there is some kind of sympathy between internal dissenters and foreign media. Same is true in Egypt, for instance. The degree of inclusive nuttiness seems more dependent on the degree of competition/hostility between host nations rather than the existence of totalitarianism, though.

Gingrich says front-runner status is ‘disorienting’

kind of admitting he really just wanted to sell books and $60k speeches

“This is such a rapid change that we’re having to rethink our own internal operation right now and where we are,” he told more than two-dozen journalists following his speech.

yeah. uh, just who are you anyway, newt?

The former speaker dedicated a larger portion of his speech Thursday to attacks on President Barack Obama, calling him a “Saul Alinsky radical.”

“He believes in a world in which the classic America has disappeared. He believes in a world where the United Nations is more important than the United States Congress. He believes in a world of internationally law rather than of the U.S. Constitution,” Gingrich noted.

he left out that obama believes in a world where puppies are ripped out of the hands of 7 year olds and drowned. gingrich failed to “note” that

But the spotlight was also on Gingrich’s position on a controversial issue – child labor laws. During an earlier stop Thursday, he suggested children in poor neighborhoods should start working. Pressed following the dinner, Gingrich didn’t say what age he thought might be appropriate to get a job.

“I think the country has to decide. Different states may do it differently, different cities might do it differently,” Gingrich said. “I am trying to create a mindset that says the best way to get poor children to have a chance to rise is in fact to help them early on, learn the work ethic.”

i might “note” that gingrich believes in a world where americans spend their childhood scrubbing toilets instead of playing softball, but i’ll just let him do it himself

There are aspects like particularity of regime ideology, place in left/right-spectrum, motivation and mobilization of masses, etc. that tend to get glossed over in totalitarianism theory.

It’s an old problem in historiography, especially when you come across stuff like NS Germany or the Holocaust and their respective idiosyncrasies, see the Historikerstreit.

Without going into discussion of fancy politological concepts, my attitude to Hitler v. Stalin is: they were equal when it came to evil, Hitler was the leader when it came to harm. “Freedom to Angela Davis” is the leitmotif ;)

>>>

Thousands of Soviet citizens signed letters demanding the release of Angela Davis, and in Russian the phrase “Freedom to Angela Davis!” (Russian: ”Свободу Анджеле Дэвис !”) became a synonym for fighting against certain problems abroad, refusing to see problems in one’s own country. Also an Afro haircut sometimes in Russian is called “Angela Davis”. In 2003 the Russian rock band “Neprikasaemye” (The Untouchables) featuring Bulgaro-Russian pop singer Filipp Kirkorov recorded a song called “Freedom to Angela Davis!” (Свободу Анджеле Дэвис !), referring both to an “Angela Davis” haircut and her imprisonment, with the widely quoted refrain “Дайте ей свободу, суки !” (Free her, bastards ! (literally -Give her freedom, bitches)).

re: #121 Sergey Romanov

If I had to describe the difference between the two, I like Kissinger’s perspective on them.
Hitler, at the end of the day, was about himself. National Socialism wasn’t some radical or new ideology, it was just standard extreme right-wing thinking of the day dressed up in a fancy package revolving around some Austrian corporal. The movement would have collapsed the minute Hitler died, if not sooner.
Stalin was in it for himself, but he also viewed himself as a servant to the Communist cause and historical truth - despite what Trotsky claims, he was a sincere Communist, which means that your 20 year old kid ranting about how Stalinism wasn’t “true communism” is a fool. This meant that as he represented a movement that was arguably the most influential ideal since the Founding Fathers, he had the patience and guile which Hitler never bothered with. He ultimately lost in a sense because it was sort of an “evil cannot comprehend good” moment - he literally couldn’t comprehend why America would care about democracy in Czechoslovkia or Poland, and so did a lot of things that made us very mad.

Meanwhile, the South Ossetian election spectacle continues. The masks are really off: now the opposition drops pretense and gives the ultimatum … to Moscow. Note that formally South Ossetia thinks of itself as an indepedent state (though 90% of its citizens are also Russian citizens, which includes the current president as well as both candidates; funny, that). They demand Moscow to approve the president-elect Dzhioyeva, or else they promise a general strike.

Harassment on the other hand completely different for what’s already been said. The Onion had it right on Cain. “Candidate who didn’t know China had nukes ends candidacy over alleged affair.” It was the things Cain said about foreign policy issues that really made me wonder about him as a candidate. Police arrested 16 Occupy Seattle protesters early Saturday after the protesters broke into a locked Capitol Hill building, barricaded themselves inside and refused to leave.

A consensual affair while your wife has cancer?

Why would a disease change the situation? Is it somehow more unethical than if she were completely healthy?

A 13 year affair that your wife obviously chose to ignore?

That is her decision and none of our business.

A consensual affair with the wife of a man who was serving his country overseas? (I don’t know anyone in this position, I just thought of it as a condition that would make it “worse.”)

Again, that is an outside condition that doesn’t really affect the situation.

There are definitely factors that might make me pay attention.

It wouldn’t figure into it for me, but the harassment sure would.

That’s how I feel. Consensual affair, sure it means he’s a jerk to his wife but we’ve had great leaders that engaged in them. Harassment on the other hand completely different for what’s already been said. The Onion had it right on Cain. “Candidate who didn’t know China had nukes ends candidacy over alleged affair.” It was the things Cain said about foreign policy issues that really made me wonder about him as a candidate. Not to mention 9-9-9 which seemed like it was something he and his advisers put together rather than thinking hard about it. Plus I have an aversion to people who have never been elected anywhere seeking the highest office in the land.

The 9-9-9 came from his last golf game.

Yes, actually, to me it does. A sick spouse is dependent on you in a way a healthy one is not. A person in good health can find out about the affair, pack his or her bags, and sue for joint custody. A person going through cancer treatments, say, has far fewer options, and is more likely to need the cheating partner.

Granted, we’re talking about degrees of assholishness, but it does add to it, in my mind.

Am I the only one who is kinda weirded out that they call LSU’s #7 “the honeybadger?” It just brings up a case of the willies about the history of how race and ethnicity were dealt with over the years in Louisisana.

Eg, from wikipedia:

Quadroon, and the associated words octoroon and quintroon are terms that, historically, were applied to define the ancestry of people of mixed-race, generally of African and Caucasian ancestry, but also, within Australia, to those of Aboriginal and Caucasian ancestry. The terms were used in law and government to provide a precise code of discrimination and the determination of rights. The use of such terminology is a characteristic of hypodescent, which is the practice within a society of assigning children of mixed union to the ethnic group which is perceived by the dominant group within the society as being “subordinate”. [1] The racial designations refer specifically to the number of full-blooded African ancestors, emphasizing the quantitative least, with quadroon signifying that a person has one-quarter black ancestry, etc.

I guess if he doesn’t mind? I dunno.

Vocabulary Word for the Day, deux:

Puta:

In Roman mythology, according to Arnobius, Puta presided over the pruning of trees and was a minor goddess of agriculture.[1]

According to one version, the etymology of its name comes from Latin and its literal meaning is pruning. The festivities in honor of this goddess celebrated tree pruning, and these days, the priestesses manifested themselves exercising a sacred carousal (prostituted themselves) honoring the goddess (which would explain the current meaning of the word in many Latin-speaking countries).

Based on having taught people with similar linguistic stories, yes, it well may. Learning multiple languages fluently is one thing, but it’s also possible for kids to end up in situations where they speak several, but never master any of them to level of sophisticated use, and writing is yet another step, especially for people who may not be literate in some of the languages they speak.

OTOH, there are plenty of people for whom writing is laborious and hard to do well who speak only their primary language. And you write quite fluently compared to, well, lots and lots of people.

Mileage varies, a lot.

Cheating on your spouse indicates an unhealthy relationship or an unhealthy attitude toward relationships. Adding a conditional modifier to that changes nothing. At what point does, let’s say disease, change the severity of the problem? Stage one, stage two, stage four cancer? Anything that makes one spouse vulnerable? How about mental disease, depression for example, is that a factor that can change the ‘badness’ of infidelity? How about if the vulnerable spouse has a remarkable support net, or the spouses have an agreement?

In my mind, any relationship where infidelity is not part of the agreement but happens anyway is justification to either end the relationship, or to get outside help, and other factors are secondary.

One problem that many English as 2nd or 3rd language speakers have with writing is that they expect to be able to write well without revising. Of course, writers for whom English is their fist language may also have that problem, but a belief that you can write well without revising tends to be stronger for people whose first language isn’t English - in ways that are difficult to distinguish from other issues with grammar, usage, syntax, etc.

I offer any of my posts you might read as evidence that lack of revision time results in poor quality writing even for English as 1rst language writers.
