Newt Gingrich in 2007: Urgent Action Needed to Address Climate Change

What changed?
Politics • Views: 23,629

In 2007, Newt Gingrich spoke convincingly about the need for “urgent” action to address climate change and reduce “carbon loading” of the atmosphere.

At last night’s Mike Huckabee Forum, Gingrich said that doing a public service ad on climate change with Nancy Pelosi was “one of the dumbest things I’ve ever done.”

Youtube Video

The evidence is sufficient that we should move towards the most effective possible steps to reduce carbon loading of the atmosphere. And do it urgently.

He’s an opportunist. I think he’s telling the truth when he says it was the dumbest thing he ever did; he should have known the GOP was heading into the anti-science hinterlands, having helped to drive it there. So taking that position was dumb of him if he wanted to remain relevant in GOP politics.

One of these statements is probably more true than the other:

(1) Newt Gingrich will say anything to get elected.
(2) Newt Gingrich will say anything.

I’m not sure which.

The amazing spiral down that the GOP has taken at the national level is quite impressive, in a bad way. It’s not just Fox’s fault, though the repositioning of what is nothing more than Hollywood-tabloid style empty talk as real news certainly contributes to it, and it’s not even the Koch brothers who are chiefly responsible for it (though they know how to manipulate the descent to their advantage.)

I lay most of the blame at the feet of those Americans who are afraid to look at the modern world face on. They are afraid of what science has discovered; they don’t want to hear about what historians and observors have recorded about the US from outside the oft repeated myths; they want to run from the velocity of change in the world at large, change that is taking the US away from its role it had in the 20th century.

There is just too much fear of taking on the future. That’s the heart of atavism - fear.

And that’s really Gingrich in a nutshell: A man who will do/say anything to remain “relevant” in the GOP. After 10+ years since he was shitcanned for leading them to the ass-whipping that was ‘96, he’s now seen as the leading candidate for one reason: He’s not Romney. And that’s really not a campaign message that’s going to work for him come next year.

Good point. I think one reason is that Obama has been so professionally demonized as an evil hater of America, that to many people, the flip-flops of Gingrich and Romney seem relatively unimportant. Millions of voters, alas, are looking for a warrior against Satan. All they want to know is: can he or she beat Obama in 2012?

I don’t think he’d do that.

I do think that if he gets the nomination, he’ll be his usual condescending, ‘smarter-than-everybody’ self in the debates - at which point Obama will promptly take his faux-intellectual ass to school.

That would be a wonderful thing to see, but I still don’t think Newt will be the nominee. I think whoever was responsible or taking Cain down (probably the Romney camp) will do basically the same thing to Newt.

The media is talking up Newt’s inevitability at this point, but there are so man skeletons in his closet he can barely get the door closed. He won’t last through the primaries IMO.

I hope you’re right, but the gop primary voters already know about all these skeletons since Newt’s had such a long career of personal fuck ups. They’re essentially down to Romney and Gingrich. Gingrich is up now because they think he’s the real conservative and because electability is less important to a group that thinks Obama has no chance at re-election, so they can run anyone and win, or so they think.

I think a lot of people don’t know that about Wallace. Fabulus the governor who did the same thing as Wallace in Arkansas was similar. And there were a lot of others who admitted either after Civil Rights legislation was passed or in their old years that they race baited because it worked. And frankly I think that’s even worse than being a sincere racist. I’ve read about authorities in the Russian empire who condoned Anti-Semitism for the exact same reasons because it helped their career advancement. Sickening.

Norv’s gotta be out. Two underachieving seasons in a row and this is the team that fired a coach who went 14-2. I think the Chargers go with a veteran coach like they did when they hired Norv and before that Marty. Not sure who the hot coordinators are that teams want since my team’s DC is already a Hall of Famer. Agree about Rivers. Never have seen him as the great QB he’s made out to be. Big underachiever.

Newt’s ‘surge’ is a media creation if you ask me. When Cain’s woman problems were first getting traction, quite a few reporters speculated that it would cause primary voters to take another look at Newt. The worse Cain’s situation got, the more the media talked about Gingrich.

And lo and behold - Cain’s problems force him out of the race and Newt is suddenly polling a lot better. Why?

Because the media pointed primary voters in that direction, and they were dumb enough to go along with the suggestion.

It just shows you how much the GOP base hates Romney.

The idea that Newt is relevant in 2011 is more a statement about how pathetic the slate of candidates the GOP is running, and just how weak Mitt is overall.

The reality of this election is two-fold. One, the guy best positioned to win against Obama is the guy the Tea Party base hates with a fiery passion. And two, the field is absolutely piss-poor because none of the truly viable candidates want to be “The guy who lost to Obama” by bending over to please the Tea Partiers. They’re gambling on the TPers taking it up the strap next November, such that come ‘16, their control of the base is broken or at least much reduced.

Yeah, but even previously staunch pro-Romney people like D_F have been praising Newt recently. I think a lot of it has to do with gamesmanship, coalescing around a candidate they think will debate well against Obama. Gingrich has the right combination of name recognition, gravitas (everyone has to address him as Mr. Speaker) and combative pig headed dickishness that conservatives tend to admire.

I think if Romney does win, he will be in the same position Kerry was in ‘04: Leading the ticket only because he’s the least objectionable candidate put up by the party. He’ll then be saddled with a “reliably conservative” VP by the party establishment, though they’ll likely try to avoid repeating the Palin mistake. And in the general, he’ll look great on stage, but keep getting his ass paddled with his own flip-flops, before leading the party to a piss-poor performance on Election Day.

Yeah I agree with the Kerry 04 comp more than Romney 08. Hardly any Democrats were really enthused by Kerry. They were more like well he’s not Bush. I think it’s an(other) indication that the media decides upon a narrative and starts repeating it, and people who are impressionable enough (glances at Fox News viewers) let themselves be led.

How else can you explain the fact that Donald Trump was seriously considered as a presidential contender for a while? Or Cain or Bachmann?

They’ll tire of Newt in a week or two. And at that point, since Santorum, Luap Nor and Huntsman have been written off pretty much permanently, the focus will turn back to Romney - just in time for the Iowa caucus and early primaries.

I think so too. I still think OWS, if it continues, could really hurt Obama’s support from his base. Especially if things heat up with Iran and OWS returns to its roots as an antiwar protest movement. He’s in an impossible situation with the lefty base. There’s nothing he can do to jail the bankers and solve income inequity. He’s still killing droves of terrorists with drones and it’s entirely possible he’s going to have to deal with Iran in the next year.

I think that’s in some ways counterbalanced by the Right’s belief in the simplicity of defeating Obama next year. I’ve seen more and more hypotheticals about what “President Romney” will do once he gets into office. Some seem to honestly believe that all they have to do is show up on Election Day with a candidate and Obama will fall. Every criticism of their candidates is met with “Well, yeah, but Obama…”

Trump, another wannabe politician, but who is more PT Barnum than Presidential debate moderator material, is still sticking around despite the fact he has no business anywhere near what the GOP is still calling a debate.

Gingrich is still around and benefiting from the ABR - anyone but Romney.

So, until Gingrich says/does something else really stupid, he’ll pick up where all the other pretenders left off - right before they all spectacularly flamed out.

He’s still killing droves of terrorists with drones and it’s entirely possible he’s going to have to deal with Iran in the next year.

you’re really out of touch with this base. fact is, this part of the base has been fatally pissed off at obama for some time now, and only now as the focus shifts to the gop primaries and the election are they muting their dissatisfaction. as a matter of fact, since OWS got started, these so called “firebaggers” have only seemed to get more and more reconciled to an obama who they have long derided as practically a republican

as for “OWS returns to its roots as an antiwar protest movement”, uh, i think you are, shall we say, “improvising freely” here - you need to find out more about what the people you speculate about actually think and what the actual history of things are

Those were terrible. The amazing thing was many of those vets had actually previously endorsed him in his Senate races. I understand why people didn’t like Senator Kerry but the smears on his military service were a load of shit and a low point in politics.

But it was very effective as the big issues of the day were the WOT and Iraq. The Unfit for Command meme stuck.

This time it will be mostly about the economy most likely. There may be a good bit about income inequality. If Romney is the nominee, his time at Bain Capital will not bode well for him.

Heard a great line earlier today from Robby Boemer, who was also running for the GOP candidacy this year on a “campaign finance reform” platform before packing it up this past week and declaring a third-party run.

I know, I didn’t mean to pick on you for it, I’m sorry. But I am passionate about this. Debates have become an absolute joke, more for ad revenue these days than anything else. What you see on stage are not presidential candidates, they’re actors in one of the longest running and least funny comedy shows this year. I’m sure you realize this but if the money was actually burning a hole in their pockets then the economy wouldn’t be in trouble. That’s why unemployment checks are comparatively better stimulus than tax cuts for the wealthy, because poor people spend damned near everything they make while rich people hoard.

That is a Nissan GT-R, which is worlds more technologically advanced than a corvette. AWD, with torque vectoring. Closer to a super-car than a muscle car.

That is a Nissan GT-R, which is worlds more technologically advanced than a corvette. AWD, with torque vectoring. Closer to a super-car than a muscle car.

I’m the same way. Cars are one of the biggest rip offs in modern society but we cherish them so much. We pay absurd prices for something that loses about 50% of its value as soon as we purchase it and we pay absurd interest to banks to buy these things we can’t afford. We tire of them in a few years when they no longer feed our egos and repeat the process all over again because we imagine that other people in traffic admire our style even though most of them are driving the same cars.

Because people kept knocking on my door asking me if I wanted to sell the car. It kept happening and I finally asked someone why they thought to ask and they said it doesn’t look like it’s being used. I’ve been washing off the moss for a few years now and it does cut down on the car sales inquiries.

I buy used. I find something in good to excellent shape, have my mechanic check it out for potential problems, if it passes inspection I pay cash and drive it home.

Mostly I use my truck to haul equipment around. As long as it looks good and all the amenities work, I’ll drive it until it starts to go, then go and pay cash for something else.

Occupy Seattle at a crossroads: ‘People have lost the message’

Some of the “occupiers” say there’s a growing frustration at the aggressive tactics of late - tactics that hurt more than help.

They want to inflict violence,” says Occupy Seattle medic Thomas Canant. “They want to start violence, cause violence.”

“It’s a 24-hour-a-day job just trying to keep the peace,” he says. “People have lost the message. People have lost the concept of why we’re here.”

Canant says the original idea of starting a dialogue over financial disparity has given way to the near-riots in Olympia and Friday night’s takover of an empty warehouse - walking the fine line between anarchy and organization.

Erik Huper of Capitol Hill says, “It just doesn’t seem like anything’s being accomplished.”

He initially supported Occupy but has tired of the aggressive faction taking over.

“There’s no constructive strategy for how we’re going to get this country out of the mess we’re in,” Huper says. “Yeah, what’s the point?”

Sounds like a subversive attempt to deny that the Earth was created 6000 years ago, eh?

Round Rock festival showscases life from when Central Texas was covered by ocean

Linda McCall really likes her “fossil bling,” as she calls it.

A shark tooth earring and a necklace with an ammonite, an ancient mollusk with a spiral shell, helped her fit right in with the thousands of fossils, many of which were found right under the Central Texas soil, at the 21st annual Fossil Fest, which was held over the weekend and which McCall organized with the Paleontological Society of Austin.

“The goal of the weekend is to introduce paleontology to the general public in a fun, interesting way, because it’s so much more than picking up dead things in rocks,” said McCall, vice president of the society.

Just below the dark dirt in somebody’s yard, there could easily be fossils between 65 million and 145 million years old, said McCall, an avocational paleontologist — an amateur who has published scientific papers.

[…]

Heh, it’s more than “there could easily be” - there absolutely are fossil remains - what do Texans think all that oil is?

Oversimplifying - petroleum is the remains of the soft matter of micro-organisms that used to live in the ocean, with the oxygen in the carbon compounds removed.

So… all this talk of automobiles - Americans run their lives on the fossil remains of micro-organisms, consuming said resource roughly a million times faster than the net production of which the Earth system (biosphere + geology) is capable.

I’m finding Chrome to be just so much more cpu and memory efficient to want to use Safari anymore, though there are a couple of things about Chrome that annoy me (such as the non-scrolling of text in window upon selection down to the bottom - I have to roll the cursor below the window to make it scroll… but I usually have the windows open the full height of the screen - argh.)

So, Chrome is likely to be my default browser now.

Apple needs to rework Safari internals. They have done so, for their mobile versions and those versions will likely keep Safari alive, but Firefox might be under too much pressure from Google:

How Google Can Deal a Death Blow to Firefox

Firefox’s future has never been as uncertain as it is right now. Let’s start with the market share numbers and work our way from there. Depending on which web analytics firm you put your faith into, Mozilla’s browser has either given up it’s second place position to Google’s Chrome browser, or is really close to doing so. NetMarketShare, for example, has Firefox sitting on a 22.14 percent of the global market at the end of November 2011, down from 25.02 percent in December 2009 (which is as far back as NetMarketShare goes). Chrome, meanwhile, is nipping at Firefox’s heels with an 18.18 percent share of the market, up considerably from just 4.71 percent in December 2009.

If you head on over to StatCounter, you’ll see numbers that show Chrome overtaking Firefox globally for the first time. According to StatCounter, Chrome is the browser of choice 25.69 percent of the time, slightly above Firefox at 25.23 percent.

3. The warming will be catastrophic

As each day passes more and more scientists are questioning all 3 postulates. The latest was Friday’s column from the leading sea level expert (and yes, he’s a scientist) saying sea level’s aren’t rising more than 1MM per year - very similar to the rise for the past 3 centuries - and there is no measured threat.

The Left calling any skeptic the name of “anti-science” sounds weirdly reminiscent to the Marxist professors who called anybody who didn’t accept the natural progression from capitalism to communism “anti-science”. But that’s always what the Left has been good at - name calling and vilifying the right. If

So one “expert” states an opinion contrary to the general consensus of his field, and that all of a sudden makes him the “leading expert” and therefore worthy of being listened to to the exclusion of all other scientists in his area of specialty. Right, I think I’ll pass on the lone nutjob opinion pieces in favor of, you know, actual science.

We who?

He’s also an expert on ‘dowsing:’

Morner claims to be an expert in “dowsing,” the practice of finding water, metals, gemstones etc. through the use of a Y-shaped twig.

Morner’s attempt to prove his dowsing abilities is chronicled by James Randi, the well-known myth buster, who has offered the longstanding One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge.

Sciency opinions for a dollar.

Morner was listed as an “allied expert” for a Canadian lobby group called the “Natural Resources Stewardship Project” (NRSP). The group appears to have ceased operations in 2008, but was originally led by executive directors Tom Harris and Dr. Tim Ball.

DeSmog uncovered that two of the three directors on the board of the Natural Resources Stewardship Project were registered energy industry lobbyists and senior executives of the High Park Advocacy Group, a Toronto-based lobby firm specializing in “energy, environment and ethics.”

Dear Dr. Osipov:

It has come to my attention that Dr. Nils-Axel Mörner gave presentations at the seminar on climate change organized by the Russian Academy of Sciences at the request of President Vladimir Putin earlier this month. Dr. Mörner attacked the science of climate change, while claiming that he is President of the Commission on Sea Level Change of INQUA.

I am writing to inform you that Dr. Mörner has misrepresented his position with INQUA. Dr. Mörner was President of the Commission on Sea Level Change until July 2003, but the commission was terminated at that time during a reorganization of the commission structure of INQUA. Dr. Mörner currently has no formal position in INQUA, and I am distressed that he continues to represent himself in his former capacity. Further, INQUA, which is an umbrella organization for hundreds of researchers knowledgeable about past climate, does not subscribe to Mörner’s position on climate change. Nearly all of these researchers agree that humans are modifying Earth’s climate, a position diametrically opposed to Dr. Mörner’s point of view.

Sincerely,
John J. Clague
President, INQUA

re: #422 tshinkle

LOL. Think your crackpot douser has more credibility on this issue than, say, the US military?

Changes in climate patterns and their impact on the physical environment can create profound effects on populations in parts of the world and present new challenges to global security and stability,” wrote Defense Science Board co-chairs, Larry Welch and Willian Howard in a letter preceding the DSB report, Trends and Implications of Climate Change for National and International Security.

“Failure to anticipate and mitigate these changes increases the threat of more failed states with the instabilities and potential for conflict inherent in such failures,” the DSB co-chairs warned.

And:

Such realities, coupled with a renewed focus on energy efficiency within the Obama administration, have prompted the Defense Department to set a more aggressive emission-reduction target than any other federal agency: 34 percent by 2020, instead of the 28 percent goal set for the federal government as a whole.

The United States military is the country’s largest energy consumer, and it is now embracing conservation and sustainability. The volatility of the oil market in recent years has made defense officials realize the importance of energy efficiency and reduced dependence on oil. Supply convoys that deliver fuel in combat zones are prime targets for attacks. Fewer convoys mean less vulnerability, making it safer to fight a war.

Why do you hate America? :)
