State of the GOP: Gingrich Teams with Birther Donald Trump to Put Children to Work
It’s a picture of a political party completely lost in lala land, as Newt Gingrich teams up with Birther Donald Trump to subvert America’s child labor laws and put disadvantaged kids to work swabbing out the toilets in their own schools, reality show style: Gingrich asks Trump to create ‘apprentice’ program for poor schoolchildren.
Donald Trump said he’s creating a program similar to “The Apprentice” for poor New York City schoolchildren, an idea he credited to Newt Gingrich.
While Gingrich might not have snagged an endorsement from Trump following a meeting at the real estate mogul and reality TV star’s Manhattan office, it appears the former House Speaker struck a different sort of deal to create the new program.
“As a number of you know, I’ve been making the case that we need to work very hard to help poor children in poor neighborhoods acquire opportunities to work,” Gingrich said following the pair’s meeting. “And I’ve asked him to take one of the poorest schools in New York, and basically offer at least 10 apprenticeships to kids from those schools, to get them into the world of work and get them into an opportunity to earn money, and get them into a habit of showing up and realizing that hard work gets rewarded and that America’s all about the work ethic.”
It’s not clear whether the new program would be developed into a television program like Trump’s “The Apprentice” on NBC, which has gone through several iterations since its 2004 premiere.
If nothing else, the plan would appear to keep promoting Gingrich’s somewhat controversial push to encourage more relaxed child labor standards, especially in poorer communities.
Good grief.
And yes, Donald Trump is still spouting Birther insanity.
In a conference call with reporters this afternoon, Donald Trump questioned the legitimacy of President Obama’s birth certificate.
“A lot of people agree with me,” Trump said in response to a question from World Net Daily’s Robert Unruh.”They find it amazing, that out of — that all of a sudden, miraculously, this birth certificate just appeared. People have questioned the birth certificate, and many people do still question it.”
“I happen to think,” Trump continued, “it’s very strange that after years, all of a sudden it appears. And I’ve also said, ‘How come there are no records that his mother was ever in the hospital?’ There are records that other people were in the hospital at that time… There’s no record that Obama or the mother was. And then you have the grandmother making statements, and you have the family pointing to different hospitals. Look, I have real questions, but I also know Obama is totally protected by the press, and unfairly so, I would say. … I find that it’s a very interesting topic because basically it’s a violation of the law.”
