Speaking today at the Republican Jewish Coalition’s Presidential Candidates Forum, Newt Gingrich announced that for Secretary of State, his pick would be John Bolton.

Yes, that would be the same John Bolton who wrote the foreword for the deranged anti-Obama book by hatebloggers Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer, The Post-American Presidency: The Obama Administration’s War on America, and who appeared in a recorded message at Geller’s ugly “Ground Zero Mosque” hatefest last year. (Newt, in typical Gingrich fashion, agreed to speak too but then bailed out.)

Anyway, back square on topic - Gingrich is really pulling out all the stops, as well as Perry (who is playing the God-card daily.)

So the question is, exactly which constituency is Gingrich hoping to attract with this announcement? Certainly its not the wrap-around-libertarian types who flock to Ron Paul. And, Bolton isn't exactly the James Dobson-esque figure that the religious right would champion, is he?

It must be the old war-hawk coalition... but they don't seem no numerous anymore.

Part of what people don't understand is that man made forcings are very fast in geologcial times, but the recovery won't be. It took millions of years to sequester what we have put up there.

Well, Inhofe has already declared victory... so I guess it doesn't matter anymore.

Problem is Inhofe is correct - in regards to the UNFCCC. It has now become the second incarnation of the League of Nations. It really has. 19 years and very, very little to show for success. Only the UN Human Rights group has a worse record, IMO.

And one other thing that you should add to that page is that the two degree mark - which we are finding was hopelessly optimistic in terms of the damage it will cause is not something that we are likely capable to stop from reaching at this point. We will be lucky to hold the world to three degrees at this point. Of course that assumes we start hard work now.

Unfortunately, emissions had the largest growth ever last year at 5.9%.

That figure was mostly from coal burning in China and does not include released methane from sloppy methane mining techniques.

Gingrich has always had a problem with kids. IIRC one of the main reasons that he was reprimanded by the House was that he set up a bogus charity and he pocketed the proceeds that were intended for disadvantaged kids. He should have been in jail but he took the reprimand and resigned instead. You have to be really corrupt to be shown the door by Republicans.

I'm having troubling parsing the statement, but it sort of sounds like they're proposing using localized pressure groups using implicit networks to achieve policy goals rather than the public forums. You know--end-running the democratic process.

Rick Perry has taken us to a new low in campaign ads with his “Strong” ad. Under the guise of spirituality, Perry has taken the manipulation of religion for partisan political advantage to an incredible, almost unbelievable extreme. With a smile on his face, he trades on personal attacks and provable untruths that reveal no understanding of the first amendment to the Constitution and very little respect for the integrity of religion.

His ad suggests a war on religion that simply does not exist. His statement that he is ‘not ashamed to be a Christian,’ would seem to imply that too many of our public officials are. If anything, the opposite is true. Far too many candidates in both parties trying to use their faith as a political weapon rather than a source for inspiration. This is a race for commander-in-chief, not pastor-in-chief. His divisive and misleading message about faith has no place in a U.S Presidential campaign.

These are difficult times and we are a country facing serious challenges requiring real solutions. Prioritizing one religious perspective in favor of another does nothing to move us forward. As a fellow Christian, I want Gov. Perry to understand that he is woefully mistaken when he implies that it is his faith, rather than his policy views, that qualify him for office. Rather than fighting these supposed ‘liberal attacks’ on our religious heritage, he should focus on protecting that heritage by guarding religious freedom for everyone.

No, Newt Is Not Going To Jail For Saying He Would Appoint John Bolton

The clause that spares Newt is “for the purpose of procuring support in his candidacy.” As TPM reported, Bolton will not indicate if he would accept such a position, nor has he even endorsed a candidate.

Law professor Rick Hasen, author of the Election Law Blog agrees in a post at his blog: “I read this [clause] as requiring proof Gingrich said he would appoint Bolton for the purpose of getting Bolton’s support. More likely, Gingrich made the promise to gain support from voters.”
