Is there something about this campus, or is it just unlucky?

I mean this sincerely. It could be something to do with the physical layout, the student body, or some other fact. Or is it just copycat?

4 dragonfire1981  Thu, Dec 8, 2011 11:01:06am

Why does this particular school seem to have so many tragic incidents?

5 HappyWarrior  Thu, Dec 8, 2011 11:01:15am

The school really needs to improve its safety. Both this and the shooting a few years ago really hit close to home to me as a Virginian and college student with a lot of friends and family that have gone to or go to Tech.

I guess the rules of chance really do apply--just because one student has gone off the rails and reached for a gun does not actually lower the odds of another student doing the same.

It might raise them, in fact.

I'd be really unsurprised by this being the case. About the only thing needed to make it worse is some Virginia CC permit holder to decide to play John Wayne...

Not sure. I've never actually been down there. It's a big campus and Blacksburg is very much a town that relies heavily on the college Quite different from here in Fairfax where GMU while vital to the community is not the community. If that made any sense?

10 kirkspencer  Thu, Dec 8, 2011 11:04:54am

I'm not sure we need the 24 hour rule for this, but I've got some questions I think it's going to take time to resolve.

What were the circumstances? Was the policeman first, or second, and why was the other victim shot? So on, so forth.

Spree/rampage, or "just" a bad crime in a sensitive location?

11 Lidane  Thu, Dec 8, 2011 11:05:22am

There actually was a protest in favor of that at GMU a few weeks back. I'm for responsible gun ownership but I think concealed guns on a campus would be a recipe for disaster. Would rather have kids smoking pot than having guns on campus.

According to the NYT, a VA Tech cop made a routine traffic stop, and things went south from there.

The shooting took place around noon, a university spokesman said, after a campus police offer made what she described as a routine traffic stop in a parking lot near McComas Hall. During the stop, the officer was shot and killed, said the spokesman, Mark Owczarski, Director of News and Information.

Witnesses reported that the shooter fled on foot, heading toward a different parking lot, called the Cage, near Duck Pond Drive. At that parking lot, a second person was found, also dead. It was unclear whether that person had been shot.

An image posted online by the student sports newspaper the Collegiate Times appeared to show a cordoned off area and white sheet covering a body in the middle of a narrow road.

It does. I was up at State College, PA (community that essentially supports Penn State University) right after they had a shooting incident in 1996 where a student was fatally shot (by a non-student lying in ambush). A state of shock since a place you normally thought was safe and comfortable has suddenly proven dangerous - and perhaps randomly so. And thus arbitrarily it could have been you who got caught in the incident.

Things like this shake up these communities heavily since they are relatively isolated and also generally have a sort of "rural" feel to them with the belief that things are a bit more laid back and safer as compared to a more built-up area.

From CNN's live blog:

[Updated 1:56 p.m. ET] A Virginia Tech police officer has been shot and killed after making a traffic stop on the university's campus, Mark Owczarski, the university's director of news and information, said Thursday.

The suspect fled on foot toward another parking lot where a second person was also found dead, he said.

The shooter is still at large, he said.

I rather take my chances with John Wayne than that Cho lunatic

As I said in the previous thread, I can put myself in the position of Officer X, hearing one of mine has been shot and killed, seeing a student with handgun drawn. Even if I don't wind up shooting him, I'm going to waste precious time dealing with him.

Worse, I see Student Y (with handgun drawn, or at least carrying) see Student Z running with handgun drawn.

I can't see any good resolution here barring luck.

The school shootings of Kip Kinkle in Oregon were not nearly as bad as they might have been because a few male students decided to take him out. They didn't have guns, but they tackled him (at least one was badly wounded in the process), and stopped his rampage.

re: #72 oaktree

Heh. Thanks for making a reference that got me dredging up memories of wargaming weekends in the basement of the fraternity house in 1984. Pizza, Pepsi, beer, and marathon gaming sessions (AH Civilization, Car Wars, Paranoia etc.) that lasted two days. And never play Toon while drunk.

I was more a D&D, Kingmaker and Squad Leader fan myself. Never played Toon but it looked like a hoot. Illuminati was a hoot as well. I liked playing the UFOs.

Pfff. Paranoia and Toon are both a hoot when toasted. Especially Paranoia. Or Paranoid Toon which happened occasionally as well.

Ah, I miss the old days - Traveller, Runequest, D&D/AD&D...

I wonder how much a good pinball machine would go for. Would love to have that in my future bachelor's pad.

The good ole days when you could use Squats and the Imperial Guard had platoons of Beastmen or field a Genestealer Cult Army.

I probably need to qualify that as group drunk to near incoherency. Buzzed did open up a lot of inhibitions and not being uptight about "falling down".

Did also play Traveller, AD&D, Champions, Runequest, etc. in that time period. That was one of the clique divisions in the fraternity - the gamers and anti-gamers.

Heh. Champions. It could be fun with a really good GM, butI've never liked point build systems since then.

We had a big Cyberpunk group back in the day. That and a White Wolf gaming group.

I find it interesting that they have the words "anti-defamation" in their name.

Heh. Champions. It could be fun with a really good GM, butI've never liked point build systems since then.

My take from RPGs over the past thirty years is that a good GM and group of players could make just about any system work and that a poorly working group of players could wreck any system. Therefore you selected and worked with a system that fit the game style and genre being run and you hopefully had a good group to work with. Some systems were easier to work with, some tried to do everything, etc.

I thought Champions was a bit clunky, tempted one to min/max heavily, and was dominated by DEX stat to a certain degree. (I think GURPS was as well when I looked at it.) The last time I did superhero genre a few years back was using Mutants & Masterminds system which I think was an interesting D20 variant for attempting the particular issues of that genre.

I played Shadowrun once in that general time period. Group fell through. Some interesting concepts and background, but I had some issues with the system and especially how "deckers" fit into it without bringing the game to a grinding halt. (I drew the parallel to how psionics was implemented in AD&D 1st Ed.)

OT, but on the VT shootings, there are two different unconfirmed reports, 1) a weapon has been recovered near the location of the 2nd shooting, and 2) the second victim may in fact be the gunman. Again, unconfirmed.
