NY Times Finally Picks Up on Ron Paul’s Incendiary Racist Newsletters

Welcome to the party pal!
Politics • Views: 21,429

The New York Times has gotten around to reporting on Ron Paul’s political newsletters that contained numerous racist, anti-gay and anti-Israel passages. These are newsletters that are well known to LGF readers, but it’s well past time for the Times to report on these newsletters.

The latest issue of The Weekly Standard, a leading conservative publication, reprised reports of incendiary language in Mr. Paul’s newsletters that were published about 20 years ago.

A 1992 passage from the Ron Paul Political Report about the Los Angeles riots read, ‘Order was only restored in L.A. when it came time for the blacks to pick up their welfare checks.’ A passage in another newsletter asserted that people with AIDS should not be allowed to eat in restaurants because ‘AIDS can be transmitted by saliva’; in 1990 one of his publications criticized Ronald Reagan for having gone along with the creation of the federal holiday honoring the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which it called ‘Hate Whitey Day.’

The magazine article largely matched a similar report in The New Republic in 2008, and it was written by the same author, James Kirchick. The passages were plucked from a variety of newsletters that Mr. Paul’s consulting business published during his years out of Congress, all of them featuring his name: Ron Paul Political Report, Ron Paul’s Freedom Report, Ron Paul Survival Report and Ron Paul Investment Letter.

Mr. Paul did not respond to an interview request, but repudiated the writings in 2008. Likening himself to a major news publisher, he said he did not vet every article that was featured in his newsletters. ‘I absolutely, honestly do not know who wrote those things,’ Mr. Paul said in an interview on CNN at the time, adding that he did not monitor the publications closely because he was busy with a medical practice and ‘speeches around the country.’

Despite his protestations to the contrary, Paul was on the letterhead as editor and is responsible for what is put into his newsletters under his name. He had no problem with running these stories, and never issued corrections until confronted with the issue back in 2008, years after they ran.

Paul continues trying to run away from his newsletters, but they keep catching up to him — as they rightfully should.

Not knowing about this shows you how far removed from reality our “news services” are. Crack reporting or reporters on crack? You decide, we spin. Sort of like walking into a room carpeted in bubble wrap in total darkness and wondering who’s throwing firecrackers outside.

To pharaphrase he worse Jon Stewart about a similar bit of epic fail “I’d laugh, but I’d need to rig up a plastic bag to contain all the spittle first.”

Obviously, the left wing media machine is just muck raking because Paul is in the lead.

Thanks for the promotion Charles; twice in a week at that!

Note how Paul is responding too. As Locker notes in his page, Paul’s saying people are calling him racist because his policies are winning.

The probability approaches zero given the low viral load in saliva, but it is not impossible and has happened before.

So, the GOP walks out of the vote about tax cuts, but they made sure we got a statue.

While House Republicans couldn’t get their act together to approve an extension of the payroll tax holiday and unemployment benefits last night, they were able to do something far more frivolousness — commission a bust of former British Prime Minister Winston Churchill to be placed in the Capitol. The House “adjourned moments after” passing the bill

I expect to hear a lot more about these newsletters (and Iran and 911) now that Ron Paul has moved into the lead in Iowa and is picking up the once again defected anti-Romney vote. I’m sure some republican bigwigs are flipping their shit right now, as Paul is perfectly timed to peak around the Iowa caucus.

. Ron Paul was happy to bank millions in subscriptions from mouthbreathers while cheerleading for a ‘race war’. Now it’s coming back to bite him.

‘Racial apocalypse was the most persistent theme of the newsletters; a 1990 issue warned of “The Coming Race War,” and an article the following year about disturbances in the Adams Morgan neighborhood of Washington, D.C., was entitled “Animals Take Over the D.C. Zoo.’
…..
‘Yet a subsequent report by Reason found that Ron Paul & Associates, the defunct company that published the newsletters and which counted Paul and his wife as officers, reported an income of nearly $1 million in 1993 alone. If this figure is reliable, Paul must have earned multiple millions of dollars over the two decades plus of the newsletters’ existence. It is incredible that he had less than an active interest in what was being printed as part of a subscription newsletter enterprise that earned him and his family millions of dollars.’

Yeah not from eating at a resuurant. The one case I can think of off the top of my head was a HIV+ mother who infected her very young children by pre-chewing their food. Ugh. Usually that kind of transmission requires some open mouth sores or micro-cuts.

“The researchers said that in two cases, the caregiver was known to have had bleeding gums or sores in the mouth at the time she was pre-chewing food for the baby. The third caregiver could not remember such lesions. “

That sounds like in two cases at the very least (and possibly the third without remembering it) it was the blood that passed HIV along not Salvia.

This is was I’ve suspected will happen all along. Perry was the only real challenger to Romney and I think he could still swing out in front again.

24 Kragar  Tue, Dec 20, 2011 11:36:25am

Romney attacks Biden for having the same opinion as Romney’s own adviser

Of course, the right wing ignored everything Biden had said and focused on the “Look, the Taliban per se is not our enemy” line. Mitt Romney was particularly perturbed, tweeting that the comment is “an outrageous affront to our troops carrying out the fight in Afghanistan.” His campaign also released a statement, saying that Biden and President Obama “must immediately explain themselves.”

But as the Washington Monthly’s Steve Benen points out, Romney may have to have a little chat with his top adviser on Afghanistan, who has endorsed the same policy Biden laid out with Newsweek:

From the comments on the Ta-Nehisi Coates piece Charles linked above:

Occam’s Racist: The notion that when confronted with multiple competing hypotheses for why a person published dozens of overtly racist newsletters over several years, the simplest and best explanation is that they are actually a racist.

43 Rocky-in-Connecticut  Tue, Dec 20, 2011 11:49:14am

this sort of denial is consistent with the modern Ron Paul /Republican/ Libertarian philosophy that allows for a not-so benign neglect to occur in regards to human rights and civil rights..

Included this philosophy is the belief that it is up to faith in the “Free Market” to determine what sort of civil rights exist. Everything on Earth is supposed to be privately-owned and owners should have the right to deny entry or services to anyone they wish based on any criteria they choose.

Libertarian/Ron Paul philosophy promises an efficient Utopia of Freedom but in actuality delivers a society more in line with Afghanistan or Somalia where dogma and thugs control society rather than progressive Western-based Law. it guarantees a third-world living standard (see 1850’s America for example).

It is interesting to note that the main proponents of Ron Paul ?Republican Libertarianism are almost always majority Whites, and not any significant minority populations…. it is no secret that when allowed to, majorities around the world will exert unfair conditions and eventual violence upon minorities. We’ve been through this before here in America. We fought long and hard to void it with various civil rights movements. We must not let the thugs and fantasy-based Utopianists win.

None of this material should be surprising for anyone with even an iota of familiarity with the “libertarian” movement. The calls for “States’ Rights”, “Constitutionalism”, “Libertarianism” are merely code words for supporting Slavery (i.e., leaving it to the States), supporting segregation, racial discrimination, religious discrimination, gender discrimination, and discrimination based on sexual orientation. It has long been established that white Supremacists / neo-Nazis are some of Ron Paul’s most enthusiastic supporters. And then, there is the conspiracy brigade (see 9/11 deniers), the survivalists and other unhinged folks who love the anarchism Ron Paul represents. A truly wonderful group of people…

Buchanan worries White Christian America will be replaced by egalitarian society

Wildmon: Why do these folks have such hostility for our traditions and for the Christian religion? Where does this come from?

Buchanan: Well I think it certainly flourished in the 1960s on the campuses, around the mid-1960s, and the ground had been prepared by many in the faculty. The basic feeling on a part of a lot of these people is that the old traditionalist America was racist, bigoted, sexist, imperialist, colonialist, homophobic and every other adjective you can think of, and they look upon that past with detestation. They want to change and alter what was a sort of, basically a Western Christian country, part of the West, part of European civilization, and they want to put an end to that. They want to create a new nation that is of all the races, cultures, creeds of every continent and country on earth and an egalitarian society, and frankly a country that has never before existed. They want to convert America into a monstrous replica of the United Nations General Assembly where everyone is equal in every way, and it’s a utopian idea and I think that it is incompatible with the existence of the country we grew up in. That is what is happening, but there is a deep, ingrained hostility of the country that we were raised in for the reasons that I mentioned.

71 Lord Baron Viscount Duke Earl Count Planckton  Tue, Dec 20, 2011 12:00:32pm

Ah, I see Sully actually made a defense of Paul:

This issue comes up again and again. Paul has taken two stands on it: the first was to take formal responsibility, even though he claims he didn’t know about the contents; the second was to insist he didn’t write them or know who did. Some of his early responses cited by TNC do seem defensive and cranky. But the notion that he has been actively seeking victimology in all this or that he is defined by these isues seems unfair to me. I think the papers (and comments almost two decades ago) should definitely be considered, in context, when judging his candidacy, and not because the neocons are determined to smear anyone challenging their catastrophic record. But compared with Rick Perry’s open bigotry in his ads, or Bachmann’s desire to “cure” gays, or the rhetoric around “illegals” in this campaign, these ugly newsletters are very, very old news. To infer from them that Paul is a big racist is a huge subjective leap I leave to others more clairvoyant than myself.

But ask yourself: you’ve now heard this guy countless times; he’s been in three presidential campaigns; he’s not exactly known for self-editing. And nothing like this has ever crossed his lips in public. You have to make a call on character. Compared with the rest on offer, compared with the money-grubbing lobbyist, Gingrich, or the say-anything Romney, or that hate-anyone Bachmann, I’ve made my call.

I see only one good point here: most of the rest of the candidates are no less bigoted than Paul. (That shouldn’t let Paul off the hook, though.)

Oy Vey. The Producers from his Gentile years. That’s akin to “the only Dylan album I have ever listened to is Saved”. //

As someone who loves the two Soviet renditions, I tried to take a look… Well, it’s not that good in comparison.

The Zero Mostel/Gene Wilder version is vastly superior to the Nathan Lane/Matthew Broderick musical version.

Why do you feel its supperior?

“Acting like everyone who’s been successful is bad and because you’re rich you’re bad, I don’t understand it,” the JPMorgan Chase & Co. (JPM) CEO told an audience member who asked about hostility toward bankers.

so let me get this straight: you are the CEO of JPMorgan Chase, but you are incapable of wrapping your mind around recent criticisms of wall st and its role in the economic meltdown, and all you hear is “everyone who’s been successful is bad”

i’m so impressed by your ability to ingest and synthesize complex information

Not a great movie, although I did once see several young men in tights perform the dance number at an SCA event. THAT was awesome.

Oh, and the prison planet claims that the TNR story was thoroughly debunked, and that this is yet another manifestation of the power of the Israel lobby.

Yeah, funny how they work that in too.

‘Look, When you are in government you need to prioritize. There are only so many hours in a day, and surely they cannot be expected to work more than 3 of them.’

Flashback:

Ron Paul’s Photo-Op with Stormfront

WOW! I had no idea Ron Paul was so tight with Stormfront, as recently as 2007! Thanks to Charles for that post a few years ago. I had no idea.

It’s hard to be sure, but from looking at the photos, Ron Paul seems perfectly comfortable with his, er, neo-Nazi companions.

I’m not aware that Ron Paul has, or is, apologizing profusely for his ill-considered past associations. Even if I wanted to bend over backwards to give him the benefit of the doubt, in the absence of such apologies I must conclude the worst about him, in regards to racism and anti-Semitism.

We’re definitely in Pat Buchannan territory here.

re: #25 Sergey Romanov

Personally? I’m looking at Andrew Sullivan, who endorsed this prick for the R primaries. Put up or shut up, Andrew.

I have a lot of respect for Mr. Sullivan, and I enjoy his blog very much. Unfortunately, in the case of his endorsing Ron Paul, I’m inclined to conclude that this was influenced by Mr. Sullivan’s feelings about Israel. Mr. Sullivan is entitled to his feelings, and I happen to agree with many (not all) of his criticisms of Israel. But it seems that quite often, when he blogs about Israel, his language is intensely emotional. It’s fascinating to see Sullivan’s eloquence used to channel such plaintive emotion, which generally comes down begging someone, anyone, to wake up and cut American aid to Israel. Therefore, I’m not really surprised to see his endorsement of Ron Paul. If there’s one thing Ron Paul wants to do as President, it’s to weaken America’s relationship with Israel.

Don’t forget about this one:

Ron Paul: Korea Conflict May Be Orchestrated Crisis To Boost Dollar:

[…]

Speaking to the Alex Jones Show, Congressman Paul said it was frightening that people in the Obama administration were advocating war as a means of escaping the economic crisis, saying that North Korea stood no chance whatsoever of successfully defeating South Korea in any conflict.

Paul speculated that the US military-industrial complex was, Doing it deliberately, and sort of orchestrating this in order to have the military-industrial complex benefit and the dollar temporarily benefit.

From Ron Paul Forums…

URGENT! US HAS ATTACKED IRAN ! DAY OF INFAMY ! and also attacked SYRIA!

Yesterday, 7 Dec 2011, two military bases were attacked from the air by the US Air Force using 2 modified TRB-3s firing a magnetic blast from 180 miles up at these Iranian Military Bases.

These TRB-3s were launched out of Edwards Air Force Base earlier in the day and given the mission in flight.

All Iranian Personnel were killed, including Hassan Moghadam, head of the Iranian ICBM program. Over 400 ICBM’s were destroyed.

The state of Iran was at peace with the United States at the time. This was an unprovoked attack that has led to the deaths of hundred’s of both Iranians and Russian military personnel.

The attack was ordered by Leon Panetti.

This attack was an Act of War by the United States and it’s owners, the IMF (See 22USC286, 5USC105, Senate Report 93-549) located in London.

Last night forces paid by the IMF attacked the nation of Syria in an unprovoked attack killing Syrian Citizens and Syrian Military personnel.

To what extent the the Eastern Block will respond to this unprovoked attack remains to be seen.

Thus, in accordance with both International Law and UN regulations, a a State of War now exists between the United States & England against the rest of the 192 other states within the United Nations.
