MSNBC Headlines Gay Couple Kissing After Navy Deployment; Conservatives Go Nuts

Exposing the hate…
LGF • Views: 38,272

This afternoon, MSNBC ran an above the fold photo showing a Navy sailor kissing her partner as the first sailor off their ship. That, by itself isn’t particularly newsworthy.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Marissa Gaeta, left, kisses her girlfriend of two years, Petty Officer 3rd Class Citlalic Snell, at Joint Expeditionary Base Little Creek in Virginia Beach on Wednesday, Dec. 22. It’s a tradition at Navy homecomings that one sailor is chosen by raffle to be first off the ship to kiss a loved one. Wednesday, for the first time, the reunited couple was same-sex.

Youtube Video

That both of the people involved in the kiss are women makes it noteworthy, and instead of honoring the service of the Petty Officer, Free Republic posters are showing their pettiness and vindictiveness, to say nothing of their anti-gay and anti-Obama sentiment. The comments are disgusting (and I’ve truncated for space):

First comment:
Awwww….isn’t that just precious?
(sickening sarcasm)

Second comment:
So it begins the total down hill turn for our nation and its military, glad I am out!

Down a bit:
Ok, well the US military it is no longer.
I’m, just going to go ahead and call it the US fagitary.
Nice going, president Ohomo.

This is the same forum that not long ago honored service in the military, and now they’re disparaging a sailor who happens to be a woman kissing her partner, who also happens to be a woman.

Moreover, some of the same people who are registering their disgust over the policy would also be among those who would have no problems if this was a scenario playing out in a porno film.

These critics need to get over themselves; women are in the military and they are doing a service to the nation that we are indebted. There are gays who serve in the military and can now serve without fear that they would have to give up their commissions because they are openly gay. They too are people to whom all Americans are indebted since they’re putting their lives on the line to protect the nation.

That someone who is a woman and happens to be gay is serving in the military should not be a shock, nor should a photo of their first kiss off the boat be cause for derision and anger.

UPDATE at 12/21/11 2:43:22 pm

Here’s another lovely comment on this subject, from a Sarah Posner post at Religion Dispatches:

God Is Not Mocked…..You Reap What You Sow…..
Posted by JLof on December 21, 2011 at 1:38 PM

“nothing but love and happiness…”

Probably the same kind of smug, God-hating, derisive mocking heard prior to God flooding the entire earth and killing almost every human and animal; and heard in Sodom and Gomorrah prior to those cities being wiped out. But, as Scripture says, God is NOT mocked. What is sown WILL be reaped….

but they're already nuts

5 Randall Gross  Wed, Dec 21, 2011 2:16:05pm

This is what happens when conservatives sit in front of computers too long -- it stresses them to the point of their bile ducts ossifying into a permanently open position - then just get stuck spewing bilious puke on the internet all day long, even at Christmas time. It's the modern version of that crabby old fart telling the neighborhood kids to get off his lawn.

Indeed, they should not be...but they are. This truly is a sad, sorry commentary on this nation, that you cease being an honorable soldier in the eyes of some the moment your lifestyle gives them the willies.

If you wear that uniform, thank you.

Thank you for being brave and courageous.

Thank you for defending the freedoms we hold so dear.

And Thank you for being willing to make the ultimate sacrifice for all of us.

From my grandfather who served in World War II to my friends and acquaintances who have served in Iraq and Afghanistan to the cadets who have just started basic.

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

God bless you all and God Bless America.

there is a mental link among these people between homophobia and patriotism.

The link is American Exceptionalism and Dominionism: they feel that if we are to be God's Own Country, our laws must reflect (their interpretation) of God's Laws.

They insist that allowing things like abortions, gays to serve in the military or marry, prostitution, drug use, progressive taxation, etc. is all an abandonment of (thier view of) Scripture and will lead to our losing favor in the eyes of God.

This is "change you can believe in". Obama got Don't Ask Don't Tell repealed the "proper" way, in Congress. He said he wanted to do this via Congress (as opposed to an Executive Order), and he did it right.

Unfortunately Congress is now officially looney-tunes, and I don't know what if anything Obama can accomplish with the Congress. But assuming the Affordable Care Act and DADT repeal are not themselves overturned in the future, we can look back on them as real achievements.

Sure. We're talking about people who support the troops--so long as the troops are straight, Christian (maybe a couple of Jews) and vote for the same people they vote for.

They support families, so long as Mom and Dad are together, there are children, everyone straight, and religiously and politically appropriate.

They support apple pie, as long as it doesn't have any weird Middle Eastern spices in it.

They admire people for one thing only: being like them. The courage a man shows in defending his country is irrelevent, as soon as he's known to be gay, they're no longer impressed.

The love of a mother for her children is sacred right up to the point that she's a lesbian or black and single, or a liberal, or an atheist, or a needlpointer when they like cross-stitch.

That's why they're PINOs. To be a real patriot, you have to love something other than yourself.

By the way, Harvey Milk was also in the military, during the Korean war, reaching the rank of lieutenant junior grade-- the same rank JFK reached.

He joined as a petty officer, which I believe means he got promoted from enlisted man to commissioned, so he must have been doing some things right.

But back then he was in the closet, so I guess that was all cool. It's only when you kiss in public that God gets angry and starts sinking your boats.

Alexander, Frederick the Great and Von Steuben were all very, very straight men.

You're just LYING if you say otherwise.

Comment on a military history forum: Caesar was possibly bi as well. Frederick's brother was definately gay and he was also a good commander. The entire Spartan military system was based on state sponsored homosexuality. Bottom line, don't piss off gay people.

I do love the scene in Rome where Atia thinks that Octavian has seduced Caesar, and is disappointed when the kid tells her it didn't happen.

"Some people might think it was improper, since he's your great-uncle, but who can say what's proper these days?"

Woman is nuts.

I say the media should show more images like this. It might desensitize the wingnuts enough to make them complaining alot less.

I still hear bitching about shampoo and shower soap commercials being pornographic. These types will only find happiness in the grave. And no, that is not meant as a threat.

Spartans!

Pretty much every review I've seen of 300 has pointed out the blatant hypocrisy in Spartans looking down at Athenians as "boy-lovers" and thus inferior.

88 Slumbering Behemoth Stinks  Wed, Dec 21, 2011 3:13:32pm

Smog check. I drove out to a spot that had a great price w/coupon, only to find out they're not "gold shield" certified anymore, despite the CA gov't website that listed them as such.

Serves my dumbass right for not calling ahead.

BTW, If you haven't noticed. She is also Surface Warfare Qualified.

Specifically the criteria in 1979 to qualify was as follows:
1. Be a Petty Officer 2. Have 24 months on a surface ship 3. Have a performance mark and Leadership marks of top 30% for CPO's and 3.4 for Petty Officers. 4. Complete the PQS for Damage Control, Damage Control Petty Officer, Repair Party Leader, and Work Center Supervisor. 5. Qualify in all watch stations for rating and pay grade. 6. Perform an oral board held by the Commanding Officer, Executive Officer or LCDR. 7. Be recommended by the chain of command, and approved by the Commanding Officer.

In other words, she's damn good at her job...

So long as they're straight; I'd venture that more than a few Freepers don't care for minorities or women in "their" armed forces either.

That's putting it way to mildly. I'd characterize it as a movie that bent the actual history over a table and wailed on its ass with a meat tenderizer for a few hours.

Actually, thanks to one of my heroes, A. Phillip Randolph, socialist union leader, the US army was ordered to desegregate in 1948 and started doing so in earnest in 1951. There was still a ton of crap for black military members to deal with, but by the end of the 50s black officers commanding white men wasn't uncommon.

Thankfully, I can read history to realize these voices have been with us a long time.

Go to the archives and find various letters to the editors over various stages of integration, whether being allowed to serve or being allowed into combat units or (the real stack of nasty) full integration with black officers over white enlisteds.

Doesn't make it better, just helps me remember that this too shall pass.

re: #13 ralphieboy

there is a mental link among these people between homophobia and patriotism.

In other words they think just like the Taliban, except with Christianity rather than Islam.
