Ron Paul Raised Money by Forecasting ‘Race War’

How the far right survives
Wingnuts • Views: 30,945

Imagine my surprise that more evidence of Ron Paul’s long history of racism and far right fear-mongering is now coming to light. Reuters has unearthed a blatantly racist and homophobic direct-mail advertisement for the infamous Ron Paul newsletters: In ad for newsletter, Ron Paul forecast race war.

A direct-mail solicitation for Ron Paul’s political and investment newsletters two decades ago warned of a “coming race war in our big cities” and of a “federal-homosexual cover-up” to play down the impact of AIDS.

The eight-page letter, which appears to carry Paul’s signature at the end, also warns that the U.S. government’s redesign of currency to include different colors - a move aimed at thwarting counterfeiters - actually was part of a plot to allow the government to track Americans using the “new money.”

The letter urges readers to subscribe to Paul’s newsletters so that he could “tell you how you can save yourself and your family” from an overbearing government.

The letter’s details emerge at a time when Paul, now a contender for the Republican nomination for president, is under fire over reports that his newsletters contained racist, anti-homosexual and anti-Israel rants.

A race war? The elves against the orcs? The orcs against the hobbits? The hobbits against the ents? (Did someone cut off dinner?)

Wait--boring old people vs. people? We've been doing that for a long time.

It's as stupid as it sounds.

Oh, and if you get a plug-in microscope for your computer, you can find all kinds of cool anti-counterfeiting features on the bills.

Did you know on the $50, there's people on the walkway to the capital.

Once you start peeling back the layers, Ron Paul's depravity is the gift that keeps on giving. They could milk his insanity right up to the nomination and never run out of dirty laundry to air. And I hope they do, so this lying old fuck can get put to bed once and for all.

People like this(Ron Paul, Rick Perry, Michele Bachmann) are given credibility for their bigotry by voters...repeatedly. We shouldn't elect these people and then be shocked by their behavior.

That whole thing where he walks out on the CNN reporter. Here he had a chance to denounce but more importantly he was actually given opportunity to denounce what was said in his newsletter. He didn't even take that opportunity and that say a lot about the man. He alleges that he basically let others speak for him. Yet he has never really denounced these allegedly ghost written articles with full measure.

Benjamin Franklin lived in a pre-standardization era. Time was standardized for the railroads.

Who knows what 2:20 during the 1700's at Independence Hall would be now. Probably somewhere between 2 and 3, but that's about as close as I would guess.

23 Gus  Thu, Dec 22, 2011 7:11:12pm

And the worst part. Ron Paul is this alleged anti-government guy that's been in the USAF Reserve for almost 40 years and he's been a government, er, Congressman since when? In addition to his "government job" with Reagan. Some anti-government guy he is.

I've been scratching my head on this one as well. Speaking for mainstream conservatives, we've known all along that Paul is a kook - or something. However, our left-wing friends have seemed to give Paul a pass. My guess is because they've seen the more effective and likable conservatives as bigger targets that they fear will pick up the centrist vote - much like what happened in 2010. No reasonable individual ever really took Paul seriously.

There is a tendency for people to go conservative when under threat. The 2008 crash is still an important threat in many people's minds and RP's economic solution is as extreme as possible without going full anarchist. It may be people are so worried they're latching on to a supposed solution as extreme as their fear.

HAHAHAHA, yes, it's liberals who've given Paul a pass. He's part of your caucus, and his popularity is rising within it. Deal with the fact that he's resonating with the Republican base right now because the Republican party's latent racism is coming to the surface.

re: #28 NJDhockeyfan

Probably because right now he's now a leading contender in the Anybody but Romney Sweepstakes. Now he's riding a wave fueled by the promise of legalized weed and a repeal of the civil rights act, a redneck yokel's wet dream.

Haven't you noticed the pattern? Each whacky GOP candidate's dirty laundry got aired when they surged. Bachmann's "pray away the gay" husband, then Perry's derogatory stone, Cain's women, then all Newt's baggage. Paul became the frontrunner in Iowa when Newt started back down, so it was his turn. The question was why is the media paying attention to Ron Paul now. RW's answer was 'they see him as an effective conservative' while pointing out Charles' previous questioning of Colme's snotty hit on her... which is somewhat irrelevant.

Maybe you could Google videos of one (or several) of her speeches. Observe the audience, then feel free to ask your question again. I'm not asking you to split atoms - or something. This should be relatively easy to follow.

We're talking about the woman who doesn't dare say she's either running or not running for president, and who has been reduced to complaining about the White House Christmas card?

Has Ron Paul ever sponsored any serious legislation that was passed?

[Link: www.govtrack.us...]

Ronald Paul has sponsored 421 bills since Jan 7, 1997 of which 418 haven't made it out of committee and 1 were successfully enacted. Paul has co-sponsored 2,385 bills during the same time period. (The count of enacted bills considers only bills, and not resolutions, actually sponsored by Paul and companion bills identified by CRS that were themselves enacted, but not if they were incorporated into other bills, as that information is not readily available.)

Some of Paul’s most recently sponsored bills include...
[Track This Bill] H.R. 2908: Testimonial Free Speech Act of 2011
[Track This Bill] H.R. 3267: Protect Small Business Jobs Act of 2011
[Track This Bill] H.R. 2044: Health Freedom Act
[Track This Bill] H.R. 2045: Freedom of Health Speech Act
[Track This Bill] H.R. 1830: To authorize the interstate traffic of unpasteurized milk and milk products that are packaged for direct human consumption.

That this is true for pretty much any politician out there, not to mention pop star, doesn't detract from the fact that the twoo believers think Sarah is the cat's meow.

Bachmann, Huntsman, Santorum not on Va. primary ballot

Four Republican presidential candidates – Mitt Romney, Newt Gingrich, Rick Perry and Ron Paul -- submitted paper work in time to qualify for Virginia's March 6 primary ballot.

No other GOP contender will be on the Virginia ballot. Rep. Michele Bachmann, former Sen. Rick Santorum and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman did not submit signatures with Virginia's State Board of Elections by today's 5 p.m. deadline.

Those who submitted the required signatures must clear another hurdle. The Republican Party of Virginia has until Tuesday to certify which candidates qualify.

...Candidates must submit the signatures of at least 10,000 registered voters, with 400 from each of the 11 Congressional districts.

Romney submitted 16,026 signatures; Paul 14,361; Perry 11,911 and Gingrich 11,050.

The state GOP decided that candidates who submit at least 15,000 signatures of registered voters on valid petitions with at least 600 signatures from each of the 11 districts will be deemed to have met the qualifications.

It could be only Mitt Romney and Ron Paul on the ballot here in Virginia. That really narrows the field down, doesn't it?

re: #71 BigPapa

I'm not changing the subject, RWMofo is.

The question was why is the media paying attention to Ron Paul now. RW's answer was 'they see him as an effective conservative' while pointing out Charles' previous questioning of Colme's snotty hit on her... which is somewhat irrelevant.

So the answer is, if I interpret RW correctly, because Paul is actually a good candidate now and the liberals deem him a threat.

Huh?

For the record, and just to sweeten the pot, I was a 'believer' in Palin at first. So very generally speaking I was initially a supporter or her. But when she was looked upon seriously the reality that she was a buffoon was too big a reality to ignore.

I hope this conversation isn't a revision of history in that she was destroyed by the liberal media because she was a serious candidate. She was vetted, and failed. The fact that she was savaged at times pretty nastily should not take away from the fact that she was not ready for prime time then, now, or ever.

Two is an effective solution, but likely not a legal one. As I've thought, an option 3 has presented itself:

3. Huff-Duff (High Frequency-Direction Finding): Use direction finding gear that can triangulate radio transmissions to find the drone's controller and vector in a snatch squad. If they are working remotely, use a DoS attack to shut down their ability to control the drone.

Maybe because up until now the GOP base wasn't crazy enough to possibly give him a few primary wins? Oh really?

Some Dems join the Ron Paul bandwagon

Manchester, Ia. — Ron Paul’s commitment to civil liberties has at least one Iowa Democrat considering caucusing for the Republican candidate.

Travis Bockenstedt, of Cedar Rapids, told the congressman he was “on the verge of converting.

“There’s a few reasons for that. One: I am a gay Iowan, and one thing that I do like is that you’re staying out of my bedroom,” said the 24-year old, whose remarks were greeted with applause from a crowd of 150 in Manchester.

Bockenstedt then added: “I know you have your feelings about that and that’s OK. I’m not going to trust any politician that would be a single-issue politician this season. That is not what our country needs.”

Another Democrat— this one hailing from Dodgeville, Wis. — made a similar announcement at an earlier campaign event.

During a town hall meeting in Dubuque, Michelle Godez-Schilling confessed to Paul: “I am actually a Democrat, and I am in love with you.”

Bockenstedt, who is working on a master’s degree in marketing, said he supports Paul because of the government transparency the congressman promotes.

Now you know of two.

TheDC’s Jamie Weinstein: Ron Paul and the Nazi Century

Even as Texas Rep. Ron Paul
rises in the polls and positions himself as a serious contender to win the Iowa caucuses, it is important to remember this: He has absolutely no chance to win the Republican nomination for president.

This is largely, though not entirely, due to his foreign policy views. Without question, Paul is attracting many Republicans who are tired of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. After ten years of war, the siren song of “come home America” strongly resonates. But what Paul is actually calling for is something far more absolutist than merely ending America’s presence in Afghanistan.

Paul wants to cut the military budget drastically and close America’s bases around the world. He has in the past called for the abolition of the CIA and FBI.

...To put his foreign policy in perspective, it might be worthwhile to imagine what our foreign policy might have looked like had Paul been at the helm during key historical moments. Admittedly the congressman’s foreign policy prescriptions may have helped America avert certain overseas debacles, but overall they would have produced catastrophe.

What would a President Paul have done during the lead-up to World War II? In October, he told me in Las Vegas that he would not provide financial aid to an ally even if it were in “mortal danger.”

...If Paul had been president in 1941, such a policy would have precluded America from aiding Britain and the Soviet Union under Lend-Lease. Both countries would likely have fallen to Nazi Germany, or been forced into some type of accommodation with Hitler. And with Great Britain and the Soviet Union out of the fight, the Germans would have been free to consolidate control over Europe — and perhaps next the Middle East — with all the utter evilness that would have entailed.

Then again, a Paul presidency would probably have averted the Pearl Harbor attacks since his foreign policy philosophy would have been opposed to an oil embargo on Japan. But without American involvement in World War II, there would also likely have been no Manhattan project, meaning Germany would have have had an open playing field to develop atomic capabilities first — and then global nuclear dominance.

Could American fealty have followed? However you look at it, if Ron Paul were president during the late 1930s and early 1940s, the 20th Century would not be remembered as the American Century. It would have been the Nazi Century.

Me too. His views on foreign policy are out-and-out insane.

He goes on about the cold war...

And if Ron Paul had been president at the precipice of the Cold War? It his hard to imagine him standing up to the Soviet Union and their quest for supremacy. Can you imagine a President Paul articulating the Truman Doctrine? He has derided it in the past.

Paul is categorically against foreign aid; so the Marshall Plan, which built Europe up after the war and helped it ward off communism, would have been off the table. He is against covert operations, so there would have been no clandestine efforts to buttress liberal forces against the Communists’ attempts to infiltrate Western Europe after World War II.

A President Paul in the 1980s would never have demanded that Soviet Premier Mikhail Gorbachev “tear down” the Berlin Wall. With the “Evil Empire” speech doomed to abandonment at the first-draft stage, we would have seen no effort to prevent Communists from taking over the whole of Europe, and no support of Polish Solidarity or other dissident groups that helped end Soviet domination of – as Churchill put it — “all the capitals of the ancient states of Central and Eastern Europe.”

It isn’t hard to envision Paul, cloistered in the White House at some point during the Cold War, shrugging at the news that the final capital of Western Europe had just fallen to the Soviet Empire.

“Oh well,” he would pithily remark. “Not our concern.”

This sounds like some sort of sci-fi/horror flick.

Oh, and I know this will probably be old news, but it is still kind of topical and I thought that I'd share it. I know someone who has been in the medical publishing industry for many years, and when I showed them the Ron Paul newsletter article that was posted here a few days ago, they helped me put the OB/GYN snippet into better context. After looking at a few covers for "Contemporary OB/GYN" they told me that it doesn't look like a great publication. It's so unknown that even with all of my archive access to medical journals it doesn't come up at all. The publisher's website is of no help, too; they have no results older than ten years.

It's not a journal that you'd use for any serious research like the newsletter tried to do (it's not peer-reviewed). Still, it's a magazine that you'd find exclusively in a doctor's office, most likely in a waiting room, but certainly not in a public library. It's more promotional than anything.

The reality is that apologists will apologize and partisans will attack, but people who are objective will scrutinize. She was attacked but also properly vetted at the same time. Her legacy is not the attack on her nor the defense of she herself, be Sarah as the candidate, as it should be. In all her You Betcha! glory.

Ghost Of Christmas Past: Ron Paul Favored Federal Slaveowner Bailout Over Civil War

Along with Rep. Ron Paul‘s (R-TX) ascent to the top of the polls in Iowa comes the obligatory media glare. Although not as flashy as the newsletter controversy, here’s a fascinating curio from Dr. Paul’s political closet: in a Christmastime appearance on Meet The Press in 2007, Paul said that Abraham Lincoln should never have started the Civil War, instead ending slavery by having the federal government purchase all of the slaves and set them free. Like many libertarian ideas, it’s appealing unless you think about it for five seconds.

Set aside the question of, if Ron Paul disagreed with starting the Civil War, why he didn’t just tell Lincoln himself. This is serious business.

The late, great Tim Russert asked Paul about remarks he made to The Washington Post. “I was intrigued by your comments about Abe Lincoln. ‘According to Paul, Abe Lincoln should never have gone to war; there were better ways of getting rid of slavery.’”

“Absolutely,” Paul replied. “Six hundred thousand Americans died in a senseless civil war. No, he shouldn’t have gone to war. He did this just to enhance and get rid of the original intent of the republic. I mean, it was that iron fist…”

“We’d still have slavery,” Russert interjected.

“Oh, come on,” Paul replied, dismissively. “Slavery was phased out in every other country of the world. And the way I’m advising that it should have been done is do like the British empire did. You buy the slaves and release them. How much would that cost compared to killing 600,000 Americans and where the hatred lingered for 100 years? Every other major country in the world got rid of slavery without a civil war. I mean, that doesn’t sound too radical to me. That sounds like a pretty reasonable approach.”

Ugh. Kooky doesn't even begin to describe him.

Ron Paul's latest book: An Inconvenient History.
/for him, anyway

A Holocaust denial "journal" called Inconvenient History has this in the intro article:

Still, Barnes, Martin and their peers managed to create a set of solid historical research based on the facts. Once lost down the Orwellian ‘memory hole,’ many of these titles have resurfaced with some prominence in books by Ron Paul and Patrick J. Buchanan. Once again, the names of John T. Flynn, Garet Garrett, Charles Callan Tansill, William Henry Chamberlin, Captain Russell Grenfell, Walter Millis, Francis Neilson, F.J.P. Veale, and Luigi Villari can be found influencing contemporary thought and being sought out by a new generation who cannot be properly classified as "right" or "left" by contemporary standards.

While Barnes and Martin were considered "serious" historians (although it later turned out that Barnes had been a Holocaust denier in closet), it is notable which political authors are hailed by the deniers.

Total - 1860 CENSUS

Free Colored Persons 476,748

Total Free Population 27,233,198

Total Number of Slaves 3,950,528

Slaves as % of Population 13%

Total Number of Families 5,155,608

Total Number of Slaveholders 393,975

% of Families Owning Slaves 8%

The price of slaves increased steadily from 1802 to 1860. In 1810, the price of a "prime field hand" was $900; by 1860, that price had doubled to $1,800.

So if the Union bought all of the slaves it would have cost $7,110,950,400. Where does Ron Paul think the government would have been able to come up with that amount of cash?

Many, many problems occur to me, not the least of which being: why would slave-owning Southerners sell their entire enslaved workforce, thereby shutting down the entire economic operation dependent upon slavery of their own free will?

Reposting from earlier, but its better on a late night thread;

The Most Insanely Violent Cartoon Ever (Is About the Bible)

In case you're not familiar with the show, Greatest Heroes and Legends of the Bible was a bold little venture that dared to ask one controversial, but vital question: What if we took the most gruesome and awful parts of the bible, paid North Korean sweatshop workers to hastily animate them and then jammed a precocious, androgynous child and its mentally retarded Scooby Doo camel into the whole mess to sing kindergarten rock songs about murder and rape over a Three Stooges sound effects reel?

That's a confusing question to ask, I know. But the good news is that Greatest Heroes has an answer for you; the bad news is that the "answer" is just furious screaming and a slide whistle. The show is balls deep in madness and never wants to pull out. Within the first 10 seconds of the actual animation, we have cougars, holy lasers, cougars running from holy lasers and a John Woo style dove explosion. Within the first minute, we have sex-offending dragons, time-traveling fruit and gunshields.

Now, let's meet our cast of characters: Here's the first "angel from God" who visits Samson's mother, an Israelite oppressed by the Philistines, to answer her prayers for a child. He chooses to manifest himself on Earth in the holiest form our culture will ever produce: A winged Sebastian Bach.

The funny things is, I've actually seen that on network television, on one of the off the beat channels.

Hilariously hideous, and Samson is such a dick. Equally funny, to get around MPAA rules about sex, violence, and other offensive issues, movie studios turned to Bible stories to make their films. All the lust, murder and rape that the MPAA of the time would not stand for, but with all the gravitas of the Greatest Story Ever Told. Hilarious times.

You should page that, without the "(Is About The Bible)" part.

an old way of saying someone was bribed is to say that somebody "crossed their palm with silver". this expression is still current.

in joyce's pun, cross is translated back into the latin, bringing in the meanings both of jesus' literal cross and the metaphorical 'crux of the matter'. palm becomes qualm, like the moral qualms you have about being bribed. and silver becomes the slivers of wood from the cross that, perhaps, are sticking into your palm and hurting you

325 The Ghost of a Flea  Thu, Dec 22, 2011 11:55:12pm

After drifting to a few sites--Gawker, TPM, ThinkProgress--I'm seeing a trend in within the comments by non-Paulbot wingnuts to the Ron Paul fiasco. The beat goes:

1. He was always a fringe Republican, and other Republicans have know that for awhile and isolated him. So he's no true Republican.
2. Liberals who liked his anti-war stance or pro-marijuana ideas had no idea, and are unfairly being left out of recriminations on who has helped Paul stay relevant.
3. Really, more blame should be directed at liberals.

I don't go to fever swamp sites, but I'd be curious if anyone notices a similar patter(n) of rhetoric.

The Paulbots are cutting and pasting great chunks of defense (and doling out condescension) all across the internets.

Whether your history here warrants this or not (most I've seen from you was lefty-baiting, but I haven't been here long enough), kudos for these positions.

I think he does hold those positions. I think a lot of Conservative cultists, when you get down to it, actually have reasonable positions on a number of topics, including climate change and other sacred cows, when asked about them in isolation.

However, modern American Conservatism is a hate-based cult. And as such, it's not really about issues, positions, or anything of that nature. It's about hating the other guys, the liberals, the lefties, the Dems, those guys. It's about finding the angle in any issue, any story, any event, to show how hateful and evil those guys, the enemy, are. And that's what we see on FOX, on the net, on the blogs, on comments here - everything else is all well and good, but what really matters is hating lefties and Democrats. That's why cultists still rationalise voting GOP, even though GOP policies are open about causing harm to Americans and the country, and even though the GOP hasn't been fiscally conservative for decades - because it's not really about anything except hating the enemy.

Wait--is the issue that Lincoln couldn't have had the North buy the slaves, or that nobody could have done it, anywhere in our history?

By the time that Lincoln was inaugurated, things had advanced pretty much past the point of no return.

Russia freed its serfs in 1861 by having the government buy them out but then make the serfs pay it back - by hiring themselves out as slave labor for 45 years.

This was one of the things that created an industrial proletariat in Russia unlike any other in Europe: there were factories will barracks rooms full of ex-serf workers living in the cities, isolated from any sort of community or social contact.

Meanwhile, the nobility took the money and enjoyed the absolute apex of society and refinement: trips to Paris, Baden-Baden, gambling and spending sprees. The extremes grew so crass that only a revolution could begin to address the problems.

Given the extent to which he's a confedereate-- that he supports extremely strong states rights-- I don't think it's actually right to say he wants less government. He wants less federal government, certainly, but he's often said things that imply he thinks the states have very few limitations on their ability to restrict rights.

I don't remember the name of the show, but a lady tried to raise a wolf pup in her home, didn't work. The wolf puppy grew up to be a big skittish wild wolf in her house, had to let it go. I believe another lady in Russia was able to breed the wild out of foxes, took maybe three generations? She picked the tamest of the bunch and bred only those.

Is that what 3 Dog Night has been up to lately?

They have a nice business success story:

"In 1989, three dogs, two guys and one 59¢ biscuit cutter joined forces to create Three Dog Bakery-the world's original bakery for dogs. Thanks to dog lovers everywhere, we've grown from a bare-bones tabletop beginning to one of the nation's leading producers of the best all-natural foods and treats for dogs."

My dogs love a local brand peanut butter treats (My boy found his xmas bag of them in the closet, he has a good sniffer) but they have chicken in them and the female can't have 'em. The ones from 3 dog look like actual hostess vanilla creme cookies. I've actually been tempted to eat one.

I have no idea what to get the wife, as usual.

It's between jade jewelry (her eyes are green and Jade would look lovely on her) and a room air purifier (her allergies are causing her hell).

State media: Suicide bombers strike government buildings in Damascus

(CNN) -- Two suicide car bombs shook the seat of Syrian power on Friday, said state-run media, a strike the government blames on terrorists and opposition forces call the work of the Bashar al-Assad regime.

Bombings carrying "the blueprints of al Qaeda" exploded outside the offices of two security branches in the Syrian capital of Damascus, state-run media reported.

The attacks follow the arrival of an Arab League advance team in the country to discuss the parameters of a pending mission to monitor the violence that has beset Syria in the wake of an uprising against President al-Assad that has killed thousands.

Was, in the AF. Last night a passenger, Houston to the Hell That Is Heathrow.

Heathrow made the list of the world's ugliest airports!

Heathrow Airport, London

Heathrow’s greatest virtue is that it makes New Yorkers feel better about JFK. What does Heathrow actually look like? Hard to say. Terry Riley, an architect and former director of the Miami Art Museum, compares it to “four shopping malls that have been smashed together.” The worst offender is Terminal 3, built in 1961 and distinguished by a bizarre system in which passengers are corralled into a low-ceilinged central seating area and not permitted to pass through security to their gates until departure time. Azmi Merican, a Malaysian design merchant, says of Terminal 3, “This is a terminal for a country that had lost an empire and didn’t know its role in the world, or what style of architecture would reflect this.”

If it passes. Focusing on GoDaddy is a non starter and fails to take into account the other corporate backers including many in the music and movie industry. Obviously GoDaddy has outstanding "pre-exisiting" political conditions which leads those of Twitter faith to fall in line and promote this hysteria against GoDaddy. Once again proving that Apple is the "Teflon corporation" when it comes to political matters especially from their flock.

Police officer allegedly assaulted at Occupy DC campsite

Police arrested two Occupy DC protesters Thursday at the McPherson Square campsite and charged them with assaulting a police officer, according to the Washington Examiner.

Police arrived to McPherson Square to investigate a report of a man assaulting a woman. When police arrived, they found several people who were allegedly disorderly.

Police shocked one suspect with a Taser while taking him into custody, the Examiner reports. Another suspect is accused of kicking a police officer in the groin.

Hezbollah commented on the twin suicide bombings that targeted security service buildings in Damascus on Friday, saying that such acts are “the specialty of the United States.”

“These blasts that resulted in the death and injury of dozens of people… are the specialty of the US, the mother of terrorism,” Hezbollah said in a statement.

I didn't know we were in the suicide biz.

Ezedin Abdel Aziz Khalil, better known as Yasin al-Suri, is a young Kurdish Syrian whose network, U.S. officials say, has funneled hundreds of thousands of dollars and operatives, primarily from the Persian Gulf region, through Iran and ultimately to al Qaeda networks in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Iraq.

Greets and saluts from the NYC metro area. Syria's Assad continues his bloody crackdown, and will use today's bombing of security/intel buildings in Damascus as proof of his claims that he's fighting terrorists in the country and not a bloody crackdown against innocent protesters, but that would ignore the fact that it has been the ongoing crackdown that has led to deserters from the military joining with the opposition to fight Assad and it's the increasing pace of desertions that has led to an increasing body count over the past couple of weeks.

Today's bombings take this to a new and more dangerous level.

At the same time, Assad is also leveraging his loyalists in Lebanon to go after opposition groups there - including Hizbullah.

Happy Holidays from the State of Michigan to its employees!

Michigan Bans All Domestic Partnership Benefits

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder (R) has signed into law a bill that prohibits all public employers from providing benefits to unmarried partners of employees. The House and Senate legal analysts disagree on whether the new law impacts the state’s universities, but Snyder clarified in a signing letter that it would not. Nevertheless, faculty at the University of Michigan have threatened an exodus from the state if their benefits are threatened in this way.

The clearance followed an uptick in violence at the camp that included two sexual assaults and numerous drug and alcohol related incidents, police said.

...Around 12:30 a.m., two people were arrested when they approached the nearby police station with gas masks, crowbars and cannisters, Berkeley police Sgt. Mary Kusmiss said. One was arrested for public drunkenness and posession of drugs, and the other for resisting arrest, she said.

Looking in Wiki:

HispanTV is a Spanish language television channel operated by IRIB, the Iran's state-owned public broadcasting corporation. It began broadcasting in December 2011.

HispanTV's programming will be distributed in Venezuela, Spain, Argentina, Cuba and other countries worldwide and is intended to reinforce ties between Iran and Latin American states such as Venezuela, Bolivia, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Colombia, and Mexico as well as to counter what the Iranian government sees as unfair coverage in Western media. The channel is similar to Press TV, an English language news channel and Al-Alam an Arabic satellite TV station also owned by the Iranian state, which claim to provide "accurate and unbiased coverage of the world and the Middle East events as they unfold."

Owned by Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting:

Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcaster, or IRIB, (Persian: سازمان صدا و سيمای جمهوری اسلامی ايران, Sāzmān-e Sedā va Sima-ye Jomhūrī-ye Eslāmī-ye Īrān), formerly called the National Iranian Radio and Television until the Islamic revolution of 1979, is a giant Iranian corporation in control of radio and television which is among the largest media organizations in Asia and Pacific region, and a regular member of Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union.

And:

Ezzatollah Zarghami has been the head of IRIB, the media corporation in charge of controlling Iranian national radio and television broadcasting, since 2004. His predecessor was Ali Larijani.

On July 4, 2009, he told the press that the videos of Neda Agha Soltan's death during the 2009 Iranian election protests were all fake and were produced by BBC and CNN.

And looking further:

Iran's state television to ban makeup for women

By Thomas Erdbrink
Washington Post Foreign Service
Wednesday, December 2, 2009; 12:09 PM

TEHRAN -- Iran's state television will ban makeup for women, "abnormal" music and unruly children, an Iranian newspaper reported Wednesday.

The broadcaster's top manager, Ezzatollah Zarghami, told his managers that female presenters wearing makeup are to be taken off air, saying the wearing of makeup was against the law -- even though millions of women in this country use it. He said there "should be no insulting of family elders by children."

"Lowering and refining of music is among our plans," Zarghami also told his managers. His comments were reported in the Ettemaad newspaper...

UN holds 'minute' of silence for Kim Jong-il

Nassir Abdulaziz Al-Nasser, president of the 193-nation assembly, called for a "minute of silence" before the start of a routine meeting at 3:00 p.m. EST in the half-empty UN General Assembly hall.

"It is my sad duty to pay tribute to the memory of the late Kim Jong-il, Secretary-General of the Workers Party of Korea, Chairman of the National Defense Commission of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea and Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army, who passed away on Saturday, Dec. 17," he said.

The minute of silence lasted for 25 seconds before Nasser proceeded with the scheduled meeting. The United States, European Union member states and Japan were among the countries that boycotted the tribute to Kim Jong-il.

North Korea's UN mission made a similar request to the Security Council, but Western diplomats said it was rejected.

[puke]

A 25 second minute of silence. Almost as short as Kim Jong Il himself. What that's called is protocol. You have to recognize the passing of Kim Jong Il if you want his successor to join the international community. We're at a point where we may see a sea change in North Korea (if Kim Jong Il was, in fact, the one factor keeping that country as rogue-ish as it was). If his son is more western-friendly, we could see conflicts with two members of the Bush Axis of Evil become things of the past.

North Korea Demands South Korea Attend Kim Jong Il's Funeral

Well this is awkward. North Korean officials have sternly invited demanded South Korea send a delegation to Kim Jong Il's funeral next week, and that not doing so would be "an unbearable insult and mockery of our dignity." According to The Guardian that "unbearable mockery" is something North Koreans will just have to deal with, as it reports the government in Seoul has no plans to send a delegation, though a select group of civilians will be allowed to attend despite South Korea's travel ban to the North. But it plays up the diplomatic dilemma of dealing with North Korea. In Pyongyang, Jong-Il is that swell guy sent from the heavens to fight the Japanese, bowl perfect games and whose death even causes nature to grieve. But to the rest of the world? Not so much. But diplomats don't always get to say what they think. The New York Times points out: "... both Seoul and Washington issued coordinated statements. They were careful to direct their 'sympathy' or 'prayers' to the 'North Korean people,' not to the regime, in contrast to Beijing and Moscow, which sent their official condolences to Pyongyang." As a United States Department spokesman puts it, "With regard to ‘the c word,’ I think we didn’t considerate it appropriate in this case." And there you have it, it only takes North Korea to make "condolence" a dirty word.

Is mystery woman in new North Korean leader's entourage his wife? Rumours fly as pretty companion appears alongside Kim Jong Un

Mystery surrounds the identity of a sharp-suited woman who has suddenly appeared amongst the new North Korean leader's entourage.

Rumours are circulating that the woman pictured standing behind Kim Jong Un at Kumsusan Memorial Palace, as guests paid respects to his dead father Kim Jong Il, is in fact his wife.

If true, her presence could indicate a new openness for the pariah state - as it would be in stark contrast to the departed leader's secretive ways.

Kim Jong Il, who died of a heart attack on Saturday, was known to have fathered seven children by four women. But it has never been made clear who, if anyone at all, it was he married.

Excitement over 28-year-old Kim Jong Un's pretty new companion has grown after she was pictured among senior leaders which included the 83-year-old Kim Yong Nam, the chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme People's Assembly.

re: #518 darthstar

A 25 second minute of silence. Almost as short as Kim Jong Il himself. What that's called is protocol. You have to recognize the passing of Kim Jong Il if you want his successor to join the international community. We're at a point where we may see a sea change in North Korea (if Kim Jong Il was, in fact, the one factor keeping that country as rogue-ish as it was). If his son is more western-friendly, we could see conflicts with two members of the Bush Axis of Evil become things of the past.

Until that time comes we have to deal with the present in that North Korea remains a totalitarian and belligerent state which poses a threat to South Korea and Japan. The only hope for change is a bit of "faith" that Kim Jong Eun will offer a significant shift in a North Korean state of mind. I find that difficult to grasp given the strong cultist and isolationist nature of the North Korean state.

I'm honestly not even sure if the grocery store I normally go to plays music. If it does, I've somehow been able to basically filter it out completely.

I try to avoid shopping at Walmart, but if I am in a hurry and need to pick up something on the way home from work, it's the most convenient. But, they have the same songs playing in a loop: "Jingle Bell Rock," "Rockin Around the Christmas Tree," "Winter Wonderland," "Jingle Bells (scat style)," "Chestnuts Roasting," over and over and over and over.

Seriously, it costs nothing while building potential goodwill for negotiations with the upcoming regime in an organization (of which North Korea was a member) in which negotiation and politics is the primary business.

Portrait of New Leader Takes Shape

A senior U.S. official said intelligence analysts believe, for instance, that Kim Jung Eun "tortured small animals" when he was a youth. "He has a violent streak and that's worrisome," a senior U.S. official said, summing up the U.S. assessments.

I wonder if this is true. Of course the first response might be "why it's the WSJ and they're owned by News Corp!" There's a question if this young fellow will even take over were his father left off given his immature age.

On the "UN tribute":

Mass boycott leads to awkward silence at UN Kim tribute
December 24, 2011

NEW YORK: The United States, Japan, South Korea and most leading European countries have boycotted a minute's silence at the United Nations General Assembly for North Korea's late leader, Kim Jong-il.

Australia's representative was in the General Assembly during the tribute.

The tribute, demanded by North Korea, was the highest-profile international move yet sought by the government in Pyongyang in its quest for global recognition for the hardline leader, who died last Saturday at the age of 69.

The awkward silence was a ''protocol'' move following a North Korean request, according to the UN General Assembly president, Nassir Abdulaziz al-Nasser.

But many diplomats from countries that took part in the protest called the tribute inappropriate. They said the Security Council turned down North Korea's demand for a gesture to Mr Kim.

North Korea's UN ambassador, Sin Son Ho, and another diplomat from the North Korean mission stood with their heads bowed during the silence. Barely a third of the General Assembly's 193 members were present.

Britain, France, Germany and most members of the 27-nation European Union joined the protest...

U.N.: North Korea Human Rights Violations Condemned

UNITED NATIONS — The U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution Monday denouncing widespread human rights violations in North Korea ranging from public executions to severe restrictions on freedom of expression, religion and assembly.

The 193-member world body scheduled the vote before the announcement late Sunday that North Korea leader Kim Jong Il had died.

The nonbinding resolution strongly urges the government in Pyongyang to immediately put an end to the "systematic, widespread and grave violations of human rights."

There's no reason, other than hope and wishful thinking, to believe that Jong-un will lead North Korea on a different path. Jong-il and the personality cult thoroughly indoctrinated the top levels of the North Korean security/political establishment. The gulag archipelago awaited those who wavered from the official line.

So, while we know that Jong-il enjoyed his Hennessey and video collections, he kept a tight grip on the Internet and external communications - effectively cutting the North Koreans off from the rest of the world.

Those policies are so far being continued by Jong-un and the coterie that is behind him (apparently his aunt and uncle). The military is backing Jong-un, and there's no reason to believe that they're going to do anything other than what they've done since Kim Song-il founded North Korea.

It would take a sea-change in political and cultural thought for North Korea to open up, whether its allowing Internet access (though most North Koreans are more worried about their next meal than who's boffing who on TMZ.com), or lowering the militarization along the DMZ.

"Immature age"? Jong-un is apparently around 30 years old. He's led a very sheltered life, and not much is known about him so much of what the intel services know is through supposition and not hands-on knowledge.

That said, he might be a complete nutjob like his dad, or he might actually have an independent streak, though that's not likely considering that Jong-il passed over his older two sons to pick Jong-un. Jong-il must have seen something in Jong-un that he liked - and his young age means that barring some unfortunate accident or massive change in North Korean politics, he's going to be around for a good long time to come.

I'm assuming that you dropped the not from the response (see above). Still, I don't think it's poor argumentation. Jong-un has been increasingly been put in a position of power to succeed Jong-il since Jong-il had those medical issues beginning a few years ago (stroke/heart issues), and the line of succession has been firmed up since 2009. That means that they've been working towards a smooth succession and continuation of policy.

You do know why the older two sons were passed over, don't you? No, apparently not.

In 2001, the oldest son used a false passport to enter Japan. He wanted to go to Disneyland Tokyo. He was caught, and extradited to China. The embarrassment on several levels had him removed. Since then he's become something of a wastrel.

The second son was "it" till around 2007. Actually, there were signs he wasn't going to be it starting in 2003. There's no clear evidence why, but rumor (with some substantiation but not proof) is that he's effeminate in demeanor and possibly homosexual. The youngest son was designated heir in 2007. The second son has been stuck as a division head of 'the party' since his move there in 2005.

It isn't so much that the father saw something in the third son he liked, it's that the other two (and culturally preferred) choices removed themselves from the running and it's all he had left.

No, I'm responding to this clause:
"Those policies are so far being continued by Jong-un and the coterie that is behind him (apparently his aunt and uncle). "

It appears to be a cornerstone of your argument, that we can't expect changes because we haven't seen changes.

While 'un has held significant power since 'il's medical issues began, 'il still had the final say. I see why you are making the claim - not a week, but two and a half years of opportunity. I just think it's a mistaken position.

Thus I stand by the claim that /that/ basis of your argument -- that we can't expect change because we haven't seen change -- is weak.

I'm well aware of the issues with the other two sons, and you're now assuming that I didn't know that the first son tried to gain entry to Japan. The second son was considered even more unstable even though he was considered the successor until as late as the mid 2000s. But you're now assuming that Jong-il had no other options at hand; he could have picked another relative or rehabilitated the image of the other sons. It's not like the propagandists don't know how to lie and exaggerate achievements.

Last night I almost had a seizure when I turned on "X Factor" (I did not realize that it pre-empted my favorite program, "Bones") and Justin Bieber was performing "Santa Is Coming To Town" surrounded by convulsion-inducing projection screens, and a bunch of guys spinning around upside down on their heads.

Horrible.

I personally hate "Last Christmas" as sung by a variety of popular R&B stars, with a passion.

No. read them in order.

I was afraid of that. Thanks.

Just this series of three, or all of them?

re: #487 austin_blue

Over time, the one that has continuously increased as annoying/unlistenable is "The Little Drummer Boy". As soon as it starts, I come to the realization that if I ever find the little bastard, I'm going to Pa-rum-pum-pum-pound that drum up his ass.

I have sort of come around on it since they used it in a very touching West Wing Christmas episode.

I hate the modern songs of Christmas done with Auto-Tune. It's like Cher has taken over TV ads..

For me it's "Santa Baby". People had better be glad there's no concealed carry in my state, otherwise I'd have committed several mall massacres by now when that delightful tune strikes up.

Don't mind Little Drummer Boy.

I love "Santa Baby"

Our big pet peeve is Christmas hymns (not songs, hymns-- O Holy Night is a hymn, and Rocking around the Christmas Tree is a song) done jazzy.

Gah.

The only version I have ever heard that didn't make me want to kick something was the glee version. It's not too bad. Santana does not sound like a kewpie doll in lingerie.

'Wonderful Christmas Time' tops my hated Christmas songs list. As much as I love Paul McCartney, that song is unforgivable.

Almost as bad - 'punked-up' versions of Christmas songs. Just a horrible idea on every level.

+1 on Santa Baby. The only thing that makes it worse is when you watch someone sing it rather than just hearing it. Then you are forced to watch someone try to be dramatically seductive while dressed as an elf. Makes me glad to be Jewish.

But...Earth Kitt!!

It would be odd, but not as annoying as someone trying to make Silent Night rock out.

re: #518 darthstar

A 25 second minute of silence. Almost as short as Kim Jong Il himself. What that's called is protocol. You have to recognize the passing of Kim Jong Il if you want his successor to join the international community. We're at a point where we may see a sea change in North Korea (if Kim Jong Il was, in fact, the one factor keeping that country as rogue-ish as it was). If his son is more western-friendly, we could see conflicts with two members of the Bush Axis of Evil become things of the past.

What exactly are the odds that one man was keeping North Korea as it is? And what exactly are the odds that his hand-picked successor is going to lead them to a brighter future?

I'm holding out no hope at all until I see something more than 'maybe this time'.

Well, my favorite ending to a carol is "Once In Royal David's City":

Not in that poor lowly stable,
With the oxen standing by,
We shall see him, but in heaven,
Set at God's right hand on high.
Where like stars his children crowned,
All in white shall wait around.

"Wait around"? FOR WHAT?

Er...I think the idea is they wait around HIM.

618 allegro  Fri, Dec 23, 2011 9:58:30am

On my way to the grocery store this morning, they played a parody of Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" that had me guffawing in the car. The guy singing nailed the voice and it was instead "Tree of Fire" about the cat setting the tree on fire with such lines as "... when I learned fern burned, the tree of fire..."

Now that's a christmas song I can love.

Portrait of New Leader Takes Shape

I wonder if this is true. Of course the first response might be "why it's the WSJ and they're owned by News Corp!" There's a question if this young fellow will even take over were his father left off given his immature age.

Remember who raised him.

620 SanFranciscoZionist  Fri, Dec 23, 2011 10:11:45am

re: #549 darthstar

New generation, new attitudes. Isolationism isn't something so easily taught to one's children. Humans are naturally curious about the outside world. I'm sure Kim Jong Un has discovered the internet, and probably even the Honey Badger. Send him a few LOLCats and in three weeks he'll be asking to visit the White House.

We are, please remember, talking about the son of a man who kidnapped entertainers he liked, rather than, say, going to Cannes. What Kim Jon Un has probably learned is that if he likes the Honey Badger, they can get him one.

And 'generation' implies exposure to other youth, a common culture, an exchange of ideas...experiences that we probably can't assume this man has ever had.

re: #553 darthstar

"tortured small animals"? I guess we know American conservative media is already working to prevent open negotiations with North Korea since they're already painting Un as a Jeffrey Dahmer.

I'm sure he's a lovely, sensitive young man.

622 SanFranciscoZionist  Fri, Dec 23, 2011 10:13:38am

re: #564 Simply Sarah

And he may also not have much control over things. As we move further down in generations, the potential for the leader to be purely symbolic seems like it would increase.

Probably a lot rests right now on the army.

re: #565 kirkspencer

So you're expecting major changes less than a week after the change? ok.

Look, you're probably right but saying they won't change because the new guy hasn't changed before anything's had time to change is poor argumentation.

True, but arguing that they will change, because they could, is silly, especially if you're ignoring the actual facts on the ground to do it.

Well, I find the song to be shitty even in the original Eartha Kitt version*. I was jokingly suggesting that there is a certain type of person who professes to like any music performed by African American artists, in order to increase their liberal cred. However I was not accusing you of such a shallow aesthetic worldview, hence the sarcslash.

It can be read before or after. A lot of the same family names, but set in this century, instead of the 15th and 16th.
