A story not consistent with Newt's or other GOP candidates' claims:

U.S. says China is not a currency manipulator

The U.S. Treasury again shied away from labeling China a currency manipulator on Tuesday, but it rapped the country for not moving fast enough on exchange rate reforms.

Some U.S. politicians have argued that China has gained an unfair competitive edge in global markets by keeping the yuan artificially low to boost exports.

But the Treasury, in a semi-annual report, said that statutes covering a designation of currency manipulator "have not been met with respect to China."

I understood almost none of the lyrics, which is probably for the best.

I'm not sure if they're going for a "The Office" vibe or what. I've never seen the US version, but the UK version might not be the best model on which to base a depiction of your supporters in a presidential campaign. David the boss is a complete amoral narcissistic tool who mistakenly but genuinely believes his staff members admire him and look up to him as a Great Leader. His sycophantic assistant Gareth is a the only one who actually does admire David, and he's a pathological liar. The rest of the office staff are all neurotic and socially awkward to greater or lesser degrees, and generally only tolerate each others' company because they have to.

The current state of the GOP, and therefore of American politics at large and by extension a non-trivial segment of our society, is extremely discouraging. I'm not saying it was better in the past (there has always been stupidity) but the stakes grow larger as our population grows larger and our lives are increasingly tied into actions all over the world.

So many big issues are in play that not having a leadership that can be taken seriously is a real weakness, for which we will pay for years to come.

Real Americans don't like France, anyway....

France has had hottest year since 1900

This year was the hottest in France since the start of the 20th century, Meteo France said Tuesday, with average national temperatures 1.5 degrees Celsius warmer than the norm.
The average national temperature in 2011 was 13.6 degrees Celsius (56 degrees Fahrenheit), Meteo France's Francois Gourand told AFP, 0.2 degrees Celsius warmer than the previous hottest year, 2003.

This year's spring was particularly warm, with temperatures an average 4.0 degrees Celsius warmer than usual in April. The "norm" is the average temperature from 1971 to 2000, Gourand said.

Autumn 2011 was also exceptionally mild, with November the second hottest since 1900, 3.0 degrees Celsius warmer than the average of temperatures from 1971 to 2000.

Every month in 2011 was above this benchmark except for July, when temperatures were 1.3 degrees Celsius cooler than average.

The year's warm temperatures were accompanied by 20 percent less rainfall than usual, except in the southeast of France where heavy rain in November saw the average attained.

Just for the record, no, Mitt and Jon couldn't get the Mormon Tabernacle Choir to back them up. The LDS church does not endorse candidates, and that would be an endorsement.

However, I'll bet they could get members of the Tabernacle choir to back them up, on their own time and independently. So long as they were just individuals, and not representing the church officially, they could do whatever they like.

Barrett Brown issues a statement about the Stratfor hack....
Questions About Motives Behind Stratfor Hack

In a statement posted online on Monday, Barrett Brown, an Anonymous spokesman, said that the goal of the Stratfor attack was not to donate money to charities.

“Rather, the operation was pursued in order to obtain the 2.7 million e-mails that exist on the firm’s servers,” Mr. Brown wrote in a post on the Web site Pastebin. “This wealth of data includes correspondence with untold thousands of contacts who have spoken to Stratfor’s employees off the record over more than a decade.”

Here's a link to his pastebiin post
[Link: pastebin.com...]

Stratfor was not breached in order to obtain customer credit card numbers, which the hackers in question could not have expected to be as easily obtainable as they were. Rather, the operation was pursued in order to obtain the 2.7 million e-mails that exist on the firm's servers. This wealth of data includes correspondence with untold thousands of contacts who have spoken to Stratfor's employees off the record over more than a decade. Many of those contacts work for major corporations within the intelligence and military contracting sectors, government agencies, and other institutions for which Anonymous and associated parties have developed an interest since February of 2011, when another hack against the intelligence contractor/security firm HBGary revealed, among many other things, a widespread conspiracy by the Justice Department, Bank of America, and other parties to attack and discredit Wikileaks and other activist groups. Since that time, many of us in the movement have dedicated our lives to investigating this state-corporate alliance against the free information movement. For this and other reasons, operations have been conducted against Booz Allen Hamilton, Unveillance, NATO, and other relevant institutions. The bulk of what we've uncovered thus far may be reviewed at a wiki maintained by my group Project PM, echelon2.org.
...
many of us are more than happy to proceed according to that amoral dictate if we find it to be necessary. And, increasingly, we have found it to be so.

Successful law practice, great wife, cool kids, new house...and he turns into Rick Perry with a bottle of maple syrup after a couple of beers. I told him "When you see you're about to fuck up, don't." Then I told him I hoped he decided to get his shit together before he lost everything, but that had to be his decision.

However, it does point out that all of the conspiracy theories about a police state system in this country doesn't hold water because by now you'd think that loser would have been interrogated by the FBI. I don't think the Dems are going to hold. Historically Congress shifts to the opposite party of the executive. The Republicans blew a lot of easy victories last time with nutty Tea Party candidates and didn't pick up as much ground as they should have. Now we have the Dem base more interested in marching around with anarchists and communists and dreaming of armed revolution. I think the Dems will probably lose congress. Let's hope Obama makes it because otherwise we'll have wingnuts in control over both houses of congress and even President Mitt won't be able to keep them in line.

He's pretty much limited to executive orders, signing statements and recess appointments anyways. Probably not much will change with Obama and a fully Republican congress.
