Kansas City Firefighter Restrains Violent Attacker on Plane

An American hero
US News • Views: 40,932

Here’s a recent story that didn’t get much notice; a firefighter aboard a flight to Kansas City subdued and restrained a man who was trying to break into the airplane’s cockpit, potentially saving the lives of everyone aboard: Action aboard airplane creates a reluctant hero.

You might suspect that this incident involved a Muslim, and you’d be right.

His name is Jabir Hazziez Jr., and he’s the firefighter who saved the plane.

Credit: Shane KeyserA man foaming at the mouth lunged for the airliner’s cabin door, attempting to open it as flight attendants struggled to hold him at bay.

Most of the post-Thanksgiving travelers cruising at some 30,000 feet toward Kansas City that day were unaware of the potential disaster looming at the front of the plane.

But when a crew member came on the intercom asking if anyone had medical training, passenger Jabir Hazziez Jr. heard the sense of concern in her voice.

What happened next came as no surprise to those who know and work with Hazziez, a Kansas City firefighter, reserve Jackson County deputy and member of the U.S. Naval Reserve.

As Hazziez walked toward the front of the plane, he saw a man pacing and holding his head in his hands. The man appeared to be in an “altered mental state” and clearly appeared agitated.

“He was trying to get to the door of the plane,” Hazziez recalled recently. “I grabbed ahold of him and tried to calm him down.”

But the man only became more combative and knocked Hazziez into the cockpit door.

Using his law enforcement training, Hazziez put the man in a neck restraint and took him to the floor. The man continued kicking and trying to reach the door with his feet. Another passenger grabbed the man’s legs.

Together they held him for about 15 or 20 minutes until the plane, which had taken off in Atlanta, made an emergency landing in Memphis and authorities came on board to deal with the man.

Unpossible! Clearly the "foaming" man has been trying to save the plane from the Muslim! Outrage!

This is so over the top it can’t be real. Looks like a set-up, propaganda site to discredit Christians and build sympathy for Muslims.

First they post murderous anti-Muslim propaganda. Then they blame it on Muslims.

Oddly enough, there was an episode of CSI: Las Vegas a few years back that had a similar scenario. Guy boards plan with an infection that's caused encephalitis, but thinks it's just a common cold. Plane reaches cruising altitude and the change in pressure causes the swelling to increase, causing him to become agitated and hostile. It finally gets so bad that he goes nuts and first tries to get into the cockpit, then failing that, tried to open the exit door.

Fortunately, unlike that episode, this real life incident had a happier ending.

Paulbots have become new fans of Kelly Clarkson...

Ron Paul supporters blow up album sales for Kelly Clarkson 28 spots after she takes heat for his Twitter endorsement

Singer Kelly Clarkson's endorsement of Republican presidential candidate Ron Paul on Twitter Thursday cost her some long-time fans but those new ones are pushing her higher in the charts.

In an apparent shedding of skin, perhaps of even those who already had her album, Ms Clarkson's loss of previous devotees gained her new ones in Dr Paul supporters pushing her album Stronger to number 14 on Amazon.com's best selling list within 24 hours.

By Friday it was at 13, up 28 spots from her former rank at number 41.

Occupier targets police officer

The wanted poster asks for Albany Police Officer Richard Gorleski's address, phone numbers, and email address as well as a map to his home and a picture of it.

Occupy Albany member Bradley Russell admits he made the poster and posted it on Facebook.

"I have made no threats and I don't want any threats made," Russell tells FOX23 News. "I have no intention of going after this man. On the other hand, if a peaceful drum circle were to show up at his house one day and protest his actions individually [...] I think that would be a legitimate kind of shaming."

Russell also posted pictures showing him both before and after he was pepper sprayed at Albany's Academy Park on December 22nd.

2 U.S. flags burned at Occupy Charlotte land group in jail

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Four protesters, including the spokesman of Occupy Charlotte, were charged after setting fire to two American flags early Friday near the Occupy camp in Center City, police said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police weren't sure earlier if the four men who set fire to two flags were associated with the Occupy Charlotte movement.

But, WBTV has learned that one of the men is the media spokesman for the Occupy group and has been the contact person listed on press releases from Occupy Charlotte.

The fires happened with in feet of the group's encampment.

Earlier reports indicated one flag was burned, but a police report says that 2 US flags were burned.

Another sane comment, from a "VictorLaszlo" whose sane comments on otherwise nutty threads have been noted before by Yours Truly:

"the terrorists?" What does that mean? (0+ / 0-)

There's not a group out there called "the terrorists."

I'm probably reading too much into this, but that sounds like Fox "News" style frame to me.

There are all kinds of terrorists. Terror is as terror does. "Terrorist" doesn't mean "middle eastern Muslim extremist."

Rule of thumb: If it's advertised on TV, you probably shouldn't buy it.

Around the Chicago area, most McDonald's do not have TV screens. Partially this is because if they did, those screens would often be set to sporting events (Bulls, Blackhawks, Cubs, White Sox, or Bears) and would thus cause patrons to make more noise and stay longer.

Q&A: Kent Sorenson, the Iowa Senator Who Just Jumped Ship from Bachmann to Paul

On Wednesday afternoon, state senator Kent Sorenson appeared with Michele Bachmann as the chair of her Iowa campaign. On Wednesday evening, Sorenson was stepping onto the stage at a veterans’ rally to endorse Ron Paul, switching alliances less than a week before the first-in-the-nation caucuses. It’s not the first time Bachmann’s campaign has suffered desertion, but the loss of Sorenson—a longtime, well-connected Hawkeye booster—is especially devastating. Her campaign responded to the news by suggesting that Sorenson had accepted money to make the switch, a charge that Paul’s campaign and a Bachmann aide deny. Amid the drama, TIME spoke to Sorenson about his controversial endorsement.

I have to go soon, but first I want to post this story and ask for people's first reactions. Best to read about it on CNN's site, because Fox is going to run with this one:

Two Maryland abortion doctors face murder charges

Elkton, Maryland (CNN) -- Two Maryland doctors face murder charges related to abortions performed on late-term fetuses that were viable, authorities said Friday.

Steven Brigham and Nicola Riley are in jails in New Jersey and Utah, respectively, awaiting extradition hearings to bring them back to Maryland, police in Elkton, Maryland, said in a news release.

The two face identical charges -- five counts each of first-degree murder, five of second-degree murder and one of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder.

The cases did not fall into the exceptions for aborted fetuses under Maryland law, Kerwin Miller, the deputy state's attorney for Cecil County, told CNN.

Defense attorney Tom Brown told CNN by e-mail that Brigham "has fully cooperated with this investigation" and has not "violated any Maryland laws." Another lawyer for Brigham, Norman Wilson, declined to comment.

Sharon Krevor-Weisbaum, an attorney at a Baltimore-based law firm that is representing Riley, said, "We believe that the criminal charges are without merit, (and) we believe it is inappropriate for (Riley) to be held without bond."

The investigation began August 13, 2010, when Riley brought a woman into an Elkton hospital due to a "complication resulting from a medical procedure," police said. The woman had driven from New Jersey to Maryland for an abortion, investigators later determined.

Days later, Elkton police searched the abortion clinic where Brigham and Riley work and found several fetuses "in a freezer chest." The fetuses were taken to a medical examiner's office in Baltimore, according to the news release

Going Where Some Men Have Only Gone Before in Their Minds: The Sci-Fi Brothel

For all those dudes who write all that sexy, sexy sci-fi fan fiction, there is now a brothel opening in Nevada just for them. The Alien Cathouse — run by the owner of the Moonlite Bunny Ranch, Dennis Hof — will feature prostitutes dressed and made up to look like aliens, science fiction characters, and basically everything nerds have ever fantasized about since they discovered their manhood hiding underneath all those fanzines. Grab some Purell, because we’re going to tell you all about it!

Set to open in a couple of months, Hof has purchased an abandoned bordello — and the adjacent gas station and convenience store — and will soon transform it into a brothel full of “girls from another world.” The currently windowless and “disgusting” establishment will soon feature spacious rooms that would make any John Doe Geek weep. And who will be helping transform the ladies into sci-fi goddesses? None other than Heidi Fleiss, whom Hof refers to as the “chief alien design queen.”

If patients are dying because a doctor is grossly out of step with the normal standard of care (I'm particularly troubled by something I read in another article somewhere else about this same incident, the doctor taking her to an ER in a cab instead of calling an ambulance, and then not giving ER staff all relevant information) -- if he's doing things that are likely to cost him his board certification (maybe even his license), that puts it in the same territory as Michael Jackson's doctor.

I'd resist any effort to make this an anti-abortion argument, though -- there's really bad dentists, too, but that doesn't mean we should outlaw root canal.

Newt Gingrich is a sensitive man:

Gingrich Kills Chapter on Climate Change in Upcoming Book

Newt Gingrich says he has killed a chapter on climate change in a post-election book of essays about the environment. But the intended author of the chapter, who supports the scientific consensus that humans contribute to climate change, says that’s news to her.

Katharine Hayhoe, an atmospheric scientist at Texas Tech, confirmed in an e-mail interview that she had been asked to write a chapter on climate change for the former House speaker’s book. She said she was approached by former Palm Beach Zoo CEO Terry Maple, Gingrich’s coeditor, at an annual meeting of Republicans for Environmental Protection. Asked to confirm her chapter was dropped, she replied, “I had not heard that.”

The climate-change issue arose on Thursday night at a Gingrich campaign stop in Carroll, when a woman expressed concern about the chapter. She said she had heard about it on Rush Limbaugh’s radio program. As she began to tell Gingrich who the author of the piece would be, Gingrich interrupted. “That’s not going to be in the book,” he told her. “We didn’t know that they were doing that, and we told them to kill it.”

Very sensitive, to the head radio wingnut's ditto-head followers.

The right wingers must be in quite the bind over Butterball right about now... they hate the company because they decided to make up a story about Muslim Turkeys - but now, the company has been busted for animal cruelty: one of right wing America's stalwart advocacy projects.
Do they now forget the Halal hysteria so they can stand up for Butterball's fundamental right to abuse animals any way they see fit?

I think sample size has a strong effect here. Paul and Huntsman were both rated relativly few times (28 and 15 repsectivly), while the "serious" candidates like mitt and rick were each rated more than 80 times. It's possible, that we're simply hearing more of mitt's lies since he's gaining media attention that the like of paul and huntsman are not.

re: #15 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

Oddly enough, there was an episode of CSI: Las Vegas a few years back that had a similar scenario. Guy boards plan with an infection that's caused encephalitis, but thinks it's just a common cold. Plane reaches cruising altitude and the change in pressure causes the swelling to increase, causing him to become agitated and hostile. It finally gets so bad that he goes nuts and first tries to get into the cockpit, then failing that, tried to open the exit door.

Fortunately, unlike that episode, this real life incident had a happier ending.

Herpes encephalitis can be nasty. Fortunately it's treatable if the person gets IV antiviral meds in time.

Of course the article says the guy was suffering from an adverse reaction to a vaccine. Que the anti-vaxxers....

335 DobermanBoston  Sat, Dec 31, 2011 11:47:37am

Kudos to Mr. Hazziez!

This happens on flights far too often. I saw it three times during the 18 months when I flew for work regularly.

I am of the opinion that the once someone pulls this on a plane they should be placed on a blacklist and never be allowed to fly again. Between security threats and the more mundane things like weather and mechanical issues the crew has enough to worry about without having to deal with these disruptive people.
