End of the Year Prediction Thread

LGF • Views: 37,253

It’s the time of year when it becomes mandatory to make predictions about what will occur in the next year, so here’s mine.

Despite right wing bloggers and Fox News concocting at least one minor fake outrage per day, and at least two ridiculously overblown fake outrages per week, Barack Obama will easily win the Presidential election against Mitt Romney, 54% to 46%.

Your predictions?

We'll go with yours.

I've known all along that it's definitely going to be Romney. He's next up (after John McCain) in the GOP Good Ol' Boy line of succession, and all this other stuff is just theater.

3 Daniel Ballard  Sat, Dec 31, 2011 5:19:35pm

Bigger margin for the win. Hopefully a win like Reagan enjoyed.

4 Jdorfma4  Sat, Dec 31, 2011 5:22:28pm

Senate - R -52, D-48
House- R-239 D - 196
Pres: Obama -49, Romney 42, Paul - 9 (yes, he will run, he's 76, this is it for him and he's obsessed)

Rubio will be the VP candidate. His lips say no but his eyes say yes.

5 sagehen  Sat, Dec 31, 2011 5:23:27pm

I beg to differ -- 52-48 at the outside is my call. More likely 51-1/2 to 48-1/2. And a lower electoral college total than last time, I don't think he' can pull Indiana again.

Dems will regain a bunch of House seats, but probably not enough for a majority. Reps will pick up some Senate seats, but not as many as they'd hope for. Dems will pick up a *lot* of governors and mayors and state legislatures.

Alcatraz (J.J. Abrams new show on Fox) will air episodes in the wrong order, weeks apart, and Fox will be astonished that it didn't pick up much of an audience. The new season of Justified, and the back half of White Collar season 3, will be awesome. The Hobbit will break all box office records.

It will be the hottest summer ever, with major wildfires in more places than we're used to. A ship will make it from New York to St Petersberg by the the elusive polar route that Lawrence spent all those years hoping to find.

I'll lose 15 more pounds and firm up my thighs.

I'm predicting that an enormous number of students here in South Carolina may well decide to vote in an election they otherwise wouldn't have bothered with, just because the onerous voter i.d. law has drawn so much attention that students may well be motivated to give a damn.

I couldn't really venture a guess at the election. Republicans will take the Seante and hold the House. I think the Presidential election has too many variables. I guess the economy is the biggest factor, uncertainty about Europe. I think Iran is going to be dealt with within the next year and it depends on how well it goes and how well the public handles it. Lefties are going wobbly and I'm not so sure Obama will retain the support of his base. Too many variables.

37 M. Dubious  Sat, Dec 31, 2011 5:47:01pm

I predict huge sandals in the Republican party.

38 Targetpractice  Sat, Dec 31, 2011 5:47:35pm

Predictions?

Obama wins close election against Romney, GOP immediately declares he has "no mandate" and declares (essentially) that they will continue to obstruct however they can.

Both sides make gains in Congress, but Senate stays in Dem hands while Republican control on the House loosens. Democrats take over numerous state and local level seats in response to Tea Party bullshit at the local level.

The situation in Iran will remain tense, with the odd rattling of the saber, while multiparty negotiations resume. In a related story, Iraq will dissolve again into sectarian violence, while the government remains largely impotent due to sharp divides in its composition. Al-Sadr will try to drum up anti-US sentiment in the wake of our departure to gain power.

The economic situation across the globe will continue to remain perilous, with the strong potential for a major collapse either in the EU or China. Meanwhile, job growth will remain shallow but steady here in the US, while the housing market continues to slowly sink beneath the waves.

And The Avengers and The Dark Knight Rises will fight over the crown of "Best Movie" of 2012 before The Hobbit comes in and eats their lunches.

My suspicion is that the redistricting will be an over-all slight plus for the Democratic party - the GOP doesn't hold the House by a very big margin and a non-responsive GOP base turned off by Mitt could mean the Dems taking the house back.

And, I would not put the Senate into the (R) column just yet. That was the conventional wisdom after the 2010 election, but the GOP has really come off poorly in this whole budget battle/ tax holiday thing.

Alright, I figure Romney's a lock for the candidacy, but anyone have a prediction about what albatross Veep they're going to hang around his neck?

55 Gus  Sat, Dec 31, 2011 5:57:26pm

In a similar vein to Killgore I'm going to at least say there's 50 percent chance that Obama will win the election. One of the most important contributing factors is this. There's close to a 100 percent chance that Republicans will vote for the Republican regardless of who is chosen in the end. Then you get the independents and then the Democrats. It's tough to gauge which way the independents will go. It could be 50/50 or it could be 33/67 in either direct with variation at or above or below.

Which leads me to my main point. The Democrats and the left. The problem here is the current stream of anti-Obama sentiment from the left regarding the signing of NDAA, and other neo-libertarian concerns. There's a strong anti-Obama sentiment occurring now with the left. The rhetoric has finally attained the same base level as it was with Bush. While I may have joked about this here recently with the Bush-Obama parodies it is in fact true. It was there last year and it has grown rather substantially.

I think that sector is by and large lost. The key to an Obama victory are the indepents. While the far-left represents a significant portion of a potential vote the independent base is much larger. And at the same time indpendent voters tend to be more reliable. But, the number are more important. Obama has to work to gain the independent vote. So counter to the message from the far-left Obama will swing further to the center, or some would say towards the right. Keeping in mind that far left already sees Obama as "just another Bush."

56 Feline Emperor of the Conservative Tears  Sat, Dec 31, 2011 5:57:28pm

Don't forget we also get an independent Trump run for a few weeks. Don has to get some publicity and also see who he can suck money out of.

The independent vote is going to rely in large party on the economy. If it continues its steady, weak improvement, then it's pretty much a lock for Obama. The craziness of the GOP primaries, combined with the almost guaranteed continuance of their campaign of obstruction in Congress, will sour opinions on whoever ultimately grabs the brass ring. And if it is Romney who wins the nomination, then he's going to get pounded not only on his years of flip-flops, but his "Mr. 1%" persona in a time of increased public disapproval of the wealth disparity and tax code flaws.

Like I said above, I right now see Obama winning a close race against a Romney ticket. But if there's some major economic crisis, scandal, or foreign policy disaster between now and then, all bets are off.

We reported yesterday about Newt cutting the global warming chapter from his new book in response to queries from Limbaugh's ditto heads. Now Newtie is trying even harder to impress:

Newt Gingrich Defends Climate Change Credentials: ‘I Am An Amateur Paleontologist’

One of the issues Newt Gingrich is most vigorously defending on the campaign trail is his position on climate change, following the advertisement he filmed several years ago for Al Gore‘s nonprofit organization alongside Nancy Pelosi. Gingrich has said repeatedly over the course of this campaign that he considers the ad the biggest mistake of his political career, but his opponents are still using the video in their attack ads.

During a town hall in Iowa today, Gingrich was asked by a supporter to clarify his position on global warming. The candidate immediately stated that global warming “hasn’t been totally proven” and even if it were, he would still oppose a cap-and-trade solution to combat carbon emissions which, as Gingrich argued, would “turn… over the entire economy to the EPA.” He offered the following analogy to explain his position.

“The Dutch face the problem of oceans. They decided to build dikes instead of lowering the sea.”

Gingrich touted his conservative credentials on opposing cap-and-trade by citing a testimony he delivered before the House of Representatives following a testimony by Al Gore. Referring to the negative attack ads his opponents have used to accuse him of anything else, he dismissed them as “a plain lie.”

And then, in a rather bizarre offshoot, Gingrich bragged about his own personal experience studying the history of the Earth’s climate.

I, also, am an amateur paleontologist, so I’ve spent a lot of time looking at the earth’s temperature over a long time, and I’m a lot harder to convince than just looking at a computer model.” [That's so straight out of the creationist playbook.]

So if we’re keeping track now, Newt Gingrich is both an amateur historian and an amateur paleontologist. All he needs is a fedora and a whip, and we’ve got ourselves a real-life Indiana Jones here! (Yes, Indy was technically an archaeologist, but let’s not ruin what could be a great franchise reboot here.)

Um, Newt, "paleontologists" study fossilized life remains. I think you meant "paleoclimatologist".

What a BS-er.

-Glenn Beck will narrowly escape death when chef Paula Deen mistakes him for the Pilsbury doughboy and stuffs him whole into a hot oven during a joint appearance on her show.

-A Bigfoot tribe will be discovered living in an abandoned logging camp in a remote part of the Pacific Northwest. They will be found to have television, radio, and cheap magazine subscriptions, but no internet service. Their alpha male will appear on national television and endorse Newt Gingrich for president.

-A group of conspiracy theorists will claim to hear hidden messages when they play Rick Perry's speeches backward. Alleged messages will include "I am a doofus," "Mitt's hair is better," and "where the hell is Maryland anyway?"

-Mitt Romney's hair will freeze during an outdoor campaign appearance next October, several large chunks will fall off injuring a number of reporters at the foot of the dais.

-A gigantic spaceship will land on the Washington Mall. Hideous but benign aliens will emerge and demand to see, not the president, but tort lawyers so they can sue various ufologists and talk-show hosts for defamation and libel, including allegations of kidnapping, cattle rustling, and airspace violations.

Sagging pants will fade from popularity after John Boehner nearly loses his pants during a televised crying jag. In a drunken, slurred attempt at damage control, he will claim that he was emulating the popular fashion trend, finally making the practice shameful enough to erase it from the cultural landscape.

Shortly after Justin Bieber's voice changes, he will release a Nirvana tribute album that receives wide critical acclaim, but is strongly disliked by his young fanbase and never takes off commercially. Hundreds of anti-Bieber Facebook pages spring up overnight. This causes tens of millions of Gen-Xers, unable to cope with the new reality of a suddenly-respectable Justin Bieber, to commit the largest mass suicide in history in a fit of nihilistic despair. Former tween fans grow into teenage hipsters, snobbishly reminding everyone that they listened to Bieber literally before he was cool.

Obama wins re-election, by a fairly wide margin - mostly due to a slowly, but surely recovering economy. Job recovery won't be quite to pre-2008 totals, but will at least be well on the way. Health care reform laws will be weakened, but not completely struck down in Supreme Court cases this year.
Republicans lose major support in Congress - the House will be near even numbers, and Dems will gain a few seats in the Senate. The Tea Party movement loses what little steam it had, including the dissolving of its congressional caucus.

Worldwide, there will be more widespread pro-democracy movements in the mideast. Syria will see its current dictatorship overthrown - possibly in an uprising even more violent than Libya, and ultimately, the Iranian clerics completely lose control of the country to the Green movement within.

On the downside of all of this, the further marginalization that occurs will possibly bring a MAJOR event of violence (or one that is narrowly averted) from someone on the far right in the US - perpetrated by either a Eric Rudolph "Army of God" type or another Timothy McVeigh/white nationalist type. When this occurs, either a Fox News personality or someone like Limbaugh will attempt to justify the actions.

Summer 2012 will be another one of extremes. Some areas will have extreme heat, smashing decades-old records (probably centralized north and east from the 2011 drought/heat wave). On the other hand, the west coast (especially southern California) see record amounts of rainfall, causing major flooding and landslide issues. Late 2012 will have a major ice/snowstorm hit the southern US, stretching from Texas/Oklahoma all the way into the southern Appalachia region.

Romney and Paul Ahead in New Iowa Poll

The Des Moines Register poll — the final one before the Iowa caucuses on Tuesday — has Mitt Romney and Ron Paul virtually tied in the lead going into the final 72 hours before voting.

In the survey, Mr. Romney has 24 percent and Mr. Paul has 22 percent.

The new poll, which was released online by the newspaper at 7 p.m. local time, shows the candidates closely bunched up behind the two leaders.

Mr. Santorum has 15 percent in the poll while Mr. Gingrich gets 12 percent. Mr. Perry has 11 percent and Mrs. Bachmann gets 7 percent. The poll has a margin of sampling error of plus or minus 4 percentage points, the paper said.

The paper said that Mr. Santorum’s support boosts himself into second place when only the final two days of the poll were counted.

I think it is quite possible that Santorum is seen as a running mate for Mitt, especially if Santorum prevails to end up #2 in delegates after Perry/Bachmann/Gingrich collapse.

The AG of the state announced the Old Dominion is likely to change the law. And both Democrats and Republicans in the state support changing the 10,000 signature law. Virginia really doesn't want to see 40% of its presidential delegates voting for Crazy Uncle Ron.

That's also one of my predictions: The threat of Ron Paul having a decent showing or even winning the nomination leads the Republican party to effective run him and his supporters off. His son Rand may leave the GOP in response, but I'm not prepared to make a prediction on that.

Actually, McDonald's knew that the coffee cup was faulty.

It wasn't necessarily an issue with the cups, but rather the temperature at which McD's corporate told their franchisees and corporate store managers to keep coffee at (at least 30-40 degrees above the industry recommendations). Coffee was kept at damn near boiling...that's what got McD's nailed, and deservedly so.

McClatchy writers ask the question:

Santorum is peaking in Iowa, but then what? By WILLIAM DOUGLAS AND DAVID LIGHTMAN

Former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum has gone from afterthought to X Factor in the Republican presidential field during the closing days before Tuesday's Iowa caucuses.

Through a combination of relentless campaigning, misfortune falling upon some of his GOP rivals, and a still-unsettled electorate, Santorum has risen from being a single-digit bottom-dweller to a third-place contender with aspirations of surprising front-runners Texas Rep. Ron Paul and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney on caucus night.

A new Des Moines Register Iowa poll dramatically illustrated Santorum's potential. Romney led the survey, taken Tuesday through Friday, with 24 percent of likely caucus-goers. Paul was second at 22 percent, followed by Santorum at 15.

But results from Thursday and Friday showed a Santorum surge. Romney still led with 24 percent, but Santorum had vaulted into second at 21 percent, followed by Paul at 18. But can the Santorum surge last?

In this topsy-turvy campaign in which six candidates have taken turns at the top, nobody knows for sure. But the conservative ex-senator is clearly enjoying the new attention after spending most of the year stumping through the Hawkeye State in near obscurity. "If we do well here we get on the national stage," Santorum told McClatchy Newspapers as he hosted an Iowa State-Rutgers University football game viewing party Friday at a restaurant in Ames, Iowa.

What a difference a bump in the polls makes. An NBC News/Marist College poll released Friday showed Santorum in third place at 15 percent among likely Republican caucus-goers, placing him behind Romney at 23 percent and Paul at 21 percent. Fifteen percent might not seem like a big number, but it's a long way up from the 6 percent Santorum registered in a similar Marist survey in early December. More importantly, Santorum has clawed his way past former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who represented Georgia and whose numbers are fading under a barrage of negative attack ads, and Texas Gov. Rick Perry, who's struggling to regain the confidence of caucus goers after his poor performances in televised debates. "He's been slowly building a grassroots following," said Craig Robinson, editor of the Iowa Republican, a GOP newsletter. "He has the ability to challenge Ron Paul and Mitt Romney on caucus night. He's had quite a week.

He's won the battle of the news cycle every night." Robinson said Santorum's new status is a testament to his old-school campaign doggedness - he's held over 350 town hall meetings and visited all of Iowa's 99 counties at least once - and his appeal to Iowa's evangelical and Christian conservative Republicans, who've been shopping for a candidate to rally around. Gingrich's drop has also prompted some Iowans to give Santorum a second look. "He getting that second wave, the splash created by the Gingrich collapse in the never-ending search by Republican conservatives for who's an acceptable conservative," said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion.

There are no questions about Santorum's conservative credentials.

Santorum is the Religious Right's last hope. I can easily see them rallying around him for the rest of the campaign season.

Coffee was kept at damn near boiling...that's what got McD's nailed, and deservedly so.

There's a whooooole lot more to that case than most people have ever heard.

Stella Liebeck of Albuquerque, New Mexico, was in the passenger seat of her grandson's car when she was severely burned by McDonalds' coffee in February 1992. Liebeck, 79 at the time, ordered coffee that was served in a styrofoam cup at the drivethrough window of a local McDonalds.

After receiving the order, the grandson pulled his car forward and stopped momentarily so that Liebeck could add cream and sugar to her coffee. (Critics of civil justice, who have pounced on this case, often charge that Liebeck was driving the car or that the vehicle was in motion when she spilled the coffee; neither is true.) Liebeck placed the cup between her knees and attempted to remove the plastic lid from the cup. As she removed the lid, the entire contents of the cup spilled into her lap.

The sweatpants Liebeck was wearing absorbed the coffee and held it next to her skin. A vascular surgeon determined that Liebeck suffered full thickness burns (or third-degree burns) over 6 percent of her body, including her inner thighs, perineum, buttocks, and genital and groin areas. She was hospitalized for eight days, during which time she underwent skin grafting. Liebeck, who also underwent debridement treatments, sought to settle her claim for $20,000, but McDonalds refused.

During discovery, McDonalds produced documents showing more than 700 claims by people burned by its coffee between 1982 and 1992. Some claims involved third-degree burns substantially similar to Liebecks. This history documented McDonalds' knowledge about the extent and nature of this hazard.

McDonalds also said during discovery that, based on a consultants advice, it held its coffee at between 180 and 190 degrees fahrenheit to maintain optimum taste. He admitted that he had not evaluated the safety ramifications at this temperature. Other establishments sell coffee at substantially lower temperatures, and coffee served at home is generally 135 to 140 degrees.

Further, McDonalds' quality assurance manager testified that the company actively enforces a requirement that coffee be held in the pot at 185 degrees, plus or minus five degrees. He also testified that a burn hazard exists with any food substance served at 140 degrees or above, and that McDonalds coffee, at the temperature at which it was poured into styrofoam cups, was not fit for consumption because it would burn the mouth and throat. The quality assurance manager admitted that burns would occur, but testified that McDonalds had no intention of reducing the "holding temperature" of its coffee.

Plaintiffs' expert, a scholar in thermodynamics applied to human skin burns, testified that liquids, at 180 degrees, will cause a full thickness burn to human skin in two to seven seconds. Other testimony showed that as the temperature decreases toward 155 degrees, the extent of the burn relative to that temperature decreases exponentially. Thus, if Liebeck's spill had involved coffee at 155 degrees, the liquid would have cooled and given her time to avoid a serious burn.

Haven't actually seen that doc yet, but I want to.

In his case, that's actually somewhat fair. The man is very old-fashioned, but other than AGW he's not aggressively ignorant like Bachmann nor an isolationist like Ron Paul. And he is capable of caring, as shown by his staunch support of President Bush's anti-AIDS programs in Africa even after coming under anti-foreign-aid fire. So yes, the Puritan image can work with Rick Santorum.

Fixed. The Japanese did not fear condemnation by foreigners, which is what recrimination would mean. What they did fear was retaliation-in-kind if they used chemical weapons on US or UK troops. Japan was not able to provide adequate chemical-protective gear to its troops and knew it. So they refrained from using mustard gas against the British or Americans, because they knew they would get the worst of the exchange.

306 Dark_Falcon  Sat, Dec 31, 2011 9:35:51pm

Sadly, its already time for our first horror story of the new year:

A teenage Afghan girl was brutally tortured, beaten and locked in a toilet by her husband's family for five months after she refused to become a prostitute, it emerged today.

Sahar Gul, 15, was in critical condition when she was rescued from a house in northern Baghlan province last week, after her neighbours reported hearing Miss Gul crying and moaning in pain.

According to police in Baghlan, her in-laws pulled out her nails and hair, and locked her in a dark basement bathroom for about five months, with barely enough food and water to survive.

Her husband's family also burned the teenager with cigarettes and cut out chunks of her flesh with pliers.

Despite being barely able to speak, Miss Gul managed to tell media about the terrifying ordeal.

'For several months I was locked up in a toilet by my in-laws and particularly my mother-in-law,' she said.

'I was denied food and water. I was tortured and beaten.'

Doctors say the youngster has suffered both mentally and physically and will need weeks of treatment in order to recover.

'She was married seven months ago, and was originally from Badakhshan province. Her in-laws tried to force her into prostitution to earn money,' Rahima Zarifi, head of women's affairs in Baghlan told Reuters.

I know rot like this exists in the world, have known it for many years. But it still sickens me to see it. I hope the people who did this to her are all hanged together. Scum like that shouldn't be breathing.

Yes, etymologically. It means, literally, "masters of return", in the sense that "master" is used to mean someone who can do, or accomplishes something.

It also means 'husband', and something like 'lord'. The deity name is the same word.

I can't argue with that, especially the first part. I think there are a lot of folks whose awareness of Islam started on 9/11. A lot of people have gotten past the worst of their feelings, but I think some never will.

Yes, etymologically. It means, literally, "masters of return", in the sense that "master" is used to mean someone who can do, or accomplishes something.

It also means 'husband', and something like 'lord'. The deity name is the same word.

I'm sorry, this is totally unclear. "Baal" by itself also means 'husband'.

I am honestly baffled, dude. I live in the Central Valley of California. Full of farm land, and thus, full of immigrant farm laborers.

But all the good, authentic taquerias have either sold to crappier ones, or have become pet stores or something.

When I lived in the bay area, I could throw a rock from my house and hit at least three bad-ass taquerias in a single toss.

I've started making my own asada tacos at home, it's gotten that bad. Most of the reasonably priced Mexican joints in my area are like Denny's doing mexican food. Good, but this guerro can do better.

I've never seen that spelling before, but, yeah, it depends on how you say it. Used amongst latinos it's pretty much always a term of endearment. Ditto for the diminutive, which is why I used it. ;)

"Gabacho" is the term I've never heard used in a positive way. IIRC, it's a pejorative the Spaniards originally used for the French.

I totally get that. Your first day/week in Waikiki and hula seems kitschy. But I get it now and I think it's beautiful, it's own unique beauty. My wife used to hula and wants to take lessons again, I hope she does. It's lovely when young girls, young ladies, even seasoned citizens do it.

My friends laugh when I say I like Hawaiian music. I still love all the other stuff from Hendrix/Zep/metal/Radiohead/triphop, but there is nothing like getting off the plane in Kona from a hectic trip and hearing the soft slack key guitar while walking through the airport.

Then I taught in the SF Bay Area. I'd have a couple white kids, here and there.

Hyper-Libertarian (economically at least) has already been tried. It led to the intensification of misery and death in Ireland 150-160 years ago.

Obama wins in a slim majority [50.5% to 48.0%] … with no significant 3rd party character in evidence.

The GOP keeps the House and the Dems keep the Senate [majority-wise].

Obama drops Biden for Hillary for VP some time around the Dem convention.

The 1st half of the Hobbit film makes enormous amounts of money but is not better then any of the Lord of the Rings films [based on a consensus of critics].

The Dark Knight Rising is universally panned as the worst of the ones that Nolan has helmed but Tom Hardy gets nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actor [and this finally launches him into a leading role category of actors].

Dunno as he can beat Bachmann, or Perry, or even Uncle Ron, if we can admit the newsletters as evidence, on the aggressive homophobia front.

In Santorum's case, it's not ignorance, it's ugliness. He's an intelligent man. Bachmann isn't, she actually is thick as a brick. Santorum has a good mind in there, buried under a pile of culture-war manure.

New Years is an under appreciated holiday by music/song writers, at least in the English speaking world I think.

Francis Lai did the theme music for the movie La Bonne Année so that might work:

Belief and Knowledge are two different things.

On the lower end of the spectrum, gullibility and ignorance speak to each respectively.

I am not willing to cut Santorum the "slack" that the term ignorance should imply. He is knowledgeable enough to know better, yet continues to pander to bigots using superstition and fear.

He is craven, not ignorant.

But since when are ignorance and pandering to bigots mutually exclusive? (Think Palin.) Santorum seems sincerely homophobic, and stupid enough to believe that gays have some magical power to destroy all that's good in western civilization. And he ran on that in 2006 in PA. It wasn't the only reason he lost, but his radical culture war stance didn't help in moderate blue PA.

They are not. But ignorance is a simple thing cured by simple learning. A man like Santorum has likely had many opportunities to learn.

Children are ignorant of many things. Remote tribes are ignorant of modern gov't and technology. This does not mean they are evil, or lesser, or craven, or stupid. It simply means they are ignorant.

I refuse to give Santorum the courtesy of calling him ignorant. He is craven and backwards. He is worse than ignorant.

As a beginner, it's tough to follow what's going on sometimes, because the regulars know each other so well. It's like being at a party where you don't know anyone, and everyone else are close friends. I will say, though, that folks hear are genuinely friendly, as long as you aren't a complete asshole (as in racist, a troll, or bigoted against any particular group).

Being ignorant vs. being backwards sounds like a distinction without a difference. Santorum seems to have purposely chosen not to learn anything about the issue in order to remain blissfully ignorant and filled with hate. No doubt you're correct that he's a craven panderer, but so is Romney (just with less vitriol).

But he's been intensely homophobic for so long that I think it's more than just campaign strategy. That we can completely agree on. I'm not quite as optimistic as Nate Silver, who thinks all states will have same sex marriage by 2025 (with MS being the last to permit it). But the tide is quite clear, and it's moving in that direction. With each passing day, more gay couples get married and society doesn't collapse. Which will eventually make today's Santorum/Bachmann/Gingrich hysteria over gay rights look like something from another planet.

To everyone: Happy New Year! Prospero Ano Nuevo! ETC, ETC!

Despite right wing bloggers and Fox News concocting at least one minor fake outrage per day, and at least two ridiculously overblown fake outrages per week, Barack Obama will easily win the Presidential election against Mitt Romney, 54% to 46%.

I think Obama will probably win too, but by around 52/53-47/48%, which is pretty much the margin of 2008 over McCain. The economy could be a thorn in his side if unemployment ticks up again, but if it continues its downward trend (however slow) and drops below 8%, he's untouchable. If unemployment starts to tick back up again, Obama will certainly be quite vulnerable, but the fact of the matter is the Republican Party is very extreme right now, and while Romney isn't, the gravitational pull of the party will force him to play footsie with some tinfoilhattery, which should scare enough independent voters to give Obama the win, however narrow.

The Dems have a good shot at holding onto the Senate, but I think the GOP will take a narrow 51 seat majority. If it is clear that Obama is unreachable, the party will focus a lot of resources on the Senate to make sure it escapes whatever coattails Obama has. In the House, the Dems should pick up between 5-10 seats, possibly more in a more positive economic environment.

I woudn't bet on this, though, because gambling is wrong!

Morning All, Happy New Year and all that...

I still think the presidential race is up in the air but if forced to pick a winner I'd go with Romney 51 Obama 48. The republicans are taking the Senate and holding the house. I would think that repubs will lose some seats in the house (they had a lot of close wins) but with their redistricting edge it might end up a wash.

We're going to end 2012 the same way we ended 2008, one party control of all branches. This time around we'll have a years worth of news stories wondering if the dem party is dead. They can run the exact same stories they ran about repubs in '09 and just change the party names.

Right now I think IN, OH, NC, and FL flip from narrow Obama wins in '08 to Romney which leaves him just short of the number he needs to pull it off. It's going to hinge on places like MI (where Romney has a ton of support), WI (where the recall race might end up biting the dems in the ass), and CO. I'd be willing to put a side bet on whoever wins CO wins the national election.

A man was detained Saturday after trying to go through a security checkpoint at a Texas airport with explosives in military-grade wrapping, federal and local officials said.

The man was stopped at a security checkpoint at the Midland International Airport about 9 a.m. and taken into custody by the FBI, they said.

FBI spokesman Mike Martinez declined to say whether the man was in military uniform or how many explosives were found in the bag. He said he did not know where the man was being held, saying he was at either the airport or at the FBI office in Midland.

In my mid-20's I rented a farm house out in the boonies. The closest neighbor was 1/2 mile away separated by cornfields. The only time the police ever came out was to break up a welcome home party for an army buddy. He showed up with lots of tank/artillery simulators and slap flares. The tank simulators were strong enough to blow up a newly planted tree in the front yard (which my roommate didn't find it at all funny). It was pretty easy for the cops to figure out where all the noise was coming from with the slap flares going off every few minutes.

I propose we have one day (could be two) dedicated for primary elections in this country. Could be one for each major party. And be done with it. This election process has gotten ridiculous. It started in early 2011 and goes well into 2012. Two years of non-stop politicking. In the end all we get is two years of leadership and two years of flapping the gums.

Agree. I'm ok with 6 months, but seriously there should be a law, though I doubt it will happen. Too much money to be earned.

Peaceful protesters getting stabby again....
Occupiers' New Year's clash

Some 800 Occupy Wall Street protesters began the new year by trying to retake Zuccotti Park.

The protesters started a massive clash with police in which one officer was stabbed in the hand with a pair of scissors.

A suspect was arrested on Saturday night in the 11:30 pm incident, according to a law enforcement source.

Hundreds in the crowd of occupiers then surrounded the ambulance as it tried to leave with the wounded officer, the source said.

Money Saved at Misdiagnosed Vets' Expense

- The Vietnam Veterans of America says the Pentagon has "systematically and wrongfully discharged" more than 22,000 veterans since 2001 "on the basis of so-called 'personality disorder'" - rather than post-traumatic stress disorder - to deny them medical care and save the Pentagon $12.5 billion in medical and disability payments.

"The military classifies PD [personality disorder] as a condition pre-existing military service," the four plaintiff chapters of the Vietnam Veterans of America say in their federal complaint against the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security.

"Veterans discharged from the military on the basis of a PD diagnosis are not entitled to receive service-connected disability benefits or VA health care.

"By its own admission, DoD dismissed 22,656 service members on the basis of PD between fiscal years 2001 and 2007; 3,372 of these discharged service members had served in combat or imminent danger zones in support of OCO [overseas contingency operation - Pentagonspeak for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan]. Approximately 2,800 of the service members whom DoD had dismissed on the basis of PD had deployed in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom or Operation Enduring Freedom.

"By discharging over 22,000 service members on the basis of PD, DoD saved the military approximately $4.5 billion in medical care and $8 billion in disability compensation that these service members would have received had they been discharged on the basis of Post-traumatic Stress Disorder ('PTSD') or another service-connected disability."

That's shitty.

Hyper-Libertarian (economically at least) has already been tried. It led to the intensification of misery and death in Ireland 150-160 years ago.

That particular little citation you in the middle comes from a book on the subject in 1962. This has been known for a while.

No go on that. My aunt lives in Scottsdale and such a sight would offend her. And freaks who offend Dark_Falcon's relatives in such a crude fashion can expect to suffer Souldeath. I'm still trying to figure out a way to do that to Ron Paul, but all current methods of Souldeath involve having a magic using being eat the victims soul and analysis indicates that any such being would die horribly from consuming the Bad Craziness of Ron Paul's soul.

The End-Of-Year Emopants Blowout!
By Zandar on January 1st, 2012

Both Glenn Greenwald and Taylor Marsh saw fit to end the year with massive anti-Obama rants where they basically announce openly their opposition to the President for 2012. Not that their opposition didn’t exist before, it’s just now official. First, Double G defends Ron Paul’s “effect” on our political discourse:

Continues.

What a couple of weirdos.

I don't know about that...I only wrote about it in my book.

Rick Santorum hit Rick Perry Friday for his ignorance of Lawrence v. Texas, the Supreme Court case which struck down Texas’s anti-sodomy statute, reports The Hill. “Rulings like Lawrence v. Texas would be a good thing to know if you are running for president,” Santorum said, according to NBC News' Andrew Rafferty.

As TPM reported yesterday, Perry said he was unfamiliar with the case, which took place while he was governor, at an event in Iowa Thursday. Last year, Perry mentioned the case in his book, “Fed Up!”

Interesting. I know a lot of folks are fans of hers but I've never bothered to check her out before. I skimmed around her blog a bit, she's smart and seems fairly honest and reasonable although she falls for some common lefty pitfalls. Eg. Her writings on Israel are pretty sucky and fairly obtuse. It's interesting that she bring up real politik now but I'm not so sure she would have cut Bush (or any other Republican) the same slack. I think she's got some hints that are leading her in the right direction but I'm not sure if she'll ever get there.
She does seem like she'd be a fun person to have a few drinks with.

Happy New Year Satt, am I missing anything worthwhile in the sports world today?

Begs the question whether any sports can be worthwhile, doesn't it?

Florida v. Ohio State, tomorrow in the Gator bowl will definitely rank.

Senate - R -52, D-48
House- R-239 D - 196
Pres: Obama -49, Romney 42, Paul - 9 (yes, he will run, he's 76, this is it for him and he's obsessed)

This seems pretty plausible to me given retirements, redistricting and which competitive seats are actually up for reelection, though, perhaps a much narrower margin in the House. It will be interesting to see what happens to the filibuster and secret holds with GOP control of the Senate. Then after two years of grandstanding and gridlock a reversal of control in the midterms.

I don't think Ron Paul will run third party though. I'm guessing a squeaker majority for Pres. Obama in the popular vote and modest win in the electoral college.

re: #11 Charles

Speaking of fake wingnut outrages, if you had to pick one as the most ridiculous of the year, which would it be?

Maybe an even more idiotic one will occur to me, but what first comes to mind is the resurgence of Birtherism with the Trump boomlet.

I'm just thinking back to all the Trump speeches & interviews getting so much airtime, the media covering the 'issue' more & more (with establishment media talking heads contemptibly asking why he hadn't yet just capitulated and somehow released his "long form birth certificate"), constant BS speculation about the scandalous things Trump's investigators were uncovering in Hawaii, etc. It eventually got so bad that majority of GOP likely primary voters were polling as Birthers and even independents and dems were sliding disturbingly in the polls. That all forced the spectacle of a sitting President having to defend his birth right & status as an American citizen to the press and, for a second time, make his Birth Certificate available for public scrutiny.

World temperatures will continue its trend of flat to slightly cooling...ocean levels will continue it's slight decline....the predictions of global warming alarmists will continue the perfect record of being 100% incorrect. But like all the other alarms of the past 25 years, nobody on the left will admit they were wrong.

Thanks for asking.

Always... always trying to ride the end of a dead thread.

World temperatures (surface, or for that matter troposphere) are not slightly cooling.

You're using ENSO measurements to make global conclusions? Idiocy is too kind a word.

He's confusing El Nina with global temperature. Whether deliberately or ignorantly, I'm not sure.

Derpty durr hurr hurr, chart shows numbers with minus signs, therefore it proves the Earth is cooling!!11! Derp.

And even then, it's still an epic FAIL:

2011: world’s 10th warmest year, warmest year with La Niña on record, second-lowest Arctic sea ice extent

At present, 2011’s nominal value ranks as the equal 10th highest on record, and the 13 warmest years have all occurred in the 15 years between 1997 and 2011....2011’s global temperatures followed this pattern, being lower than those of 2010, but were still warmer than the most recent moderate to strong La Niña years
