Santorum Bubbles Up As Iowa Polls Show Very Close Race

Santorum has momentum
Politics • Views: 29,229

The Iowa Caucus is now basically in a three-way tie, with Rick Santorum rising.

The Republican caucus in Iowa is headed for a photo finish, with the three leading contenders all within two points of each other. Ron Paul is at 20%, Mitt Romney at 19%, and Rick Santorum at 18%. Rounding out the field are Newt Gingrich at 14%, Rick Perry at 10%, Michele Bachmann at 8%, Jon Huntsman at 4%, and Buddy Roemer at 2%.

GOP's already got its talking points ready.

- Paul wins, then they shrug and move on to the other primaries.

- Santorum wins, they'll be shocked, but remind themselves that Huck won Iowa in '08 and did nothing with it.

- Romney wins, and they begin preparations for his nomination.

18 freetoken  Mon, Jan 2, 2012 11:31:43am

Back in 2008 I brought up how the then beginning recession would make political problems for candidates - though many in the crowd here at that time refused to acknowledge that by early 2008 the US was already in severe contraction (not that I was that great of a genius - I just checked the various reports from places such as the FED and such.)

Anyway, everyone says that this year the economy will play the key role. I don't disagree with that, but it is hard for me to see how much better off the general populace will be by this November.

2011 was the bottom as far as housing starts - the worst year since records have been kept (in the early '60's). Given how the US has centered our economy on housing (since other manufacturing has declined in relative importance) that has meant a very sluggish year for many Americans. Housing starts are projected to grow this year, but given how low they have been moderate growth will still lead to just weak numbers.

Furthermore, Europe appears to be heading into another recession. Between that the the problem with certain Euro-based nations not being able to repay their debt... that adds up for a troubled year for Europe, which could spill over to the US.

So, if we are not in the "Happy Days Are Here Again" mode by November I wonder if the GOP candidate, should he be winsome enough, or just not too objectionable, could unseat President Obama.

However, the hyper-religious, reactionary GOP candidates do turn many Americans off. Most of our fellow citizens have not been paying very close attention yet, and many will just vote in November without hardly any research into the candidates at all. Frustrating for those of us who care, but that is just how it is.

...As for Santorum, this is the sort of subtle racism — much like Newt Gingrich’s recent comments about low-income youth — that Republicans often don’t recognize as being racist. In Santorum’s mind, when he thinks of programs like food stamps, he automatically associates them with “black people’s lives.”

and if you ask the average wingnut what caused the recession they will tell you without missing a beat or thinking about it for a half a second that the recession was caused by liberals forcing banks to sell houses to "unqualified minorities"

Rose Parade 2012: Occupy activists form 'peacekeeping' team

Occupy the Rose Parade activists said they had assembled a "peacekeeping" team to thwart members who might try to cause trouble during the event.

A team of about 36 Occupy protesters will, in three groups, march with the Occupy procession at the end of the Rose Parade to self-police and prevent violence or disturbance of the parade itself.

..."If we can get small situations handled within our own group, we’ll avoid the need for police to come in," said activist Roger Bruce of San Clemente, who will be in the peacekeeping group.
The group will use human microphones, in which a person yells and others echo, to draw attention to any troublemakers, he said.

"We think we can handle it with sweetness," Bruce added.

I wonder what they are expecting to happen.

re: #18 freetoken

Basically, yes with caveats.

The economy would normally be a problem for Obama, especially if we see a second dip. (which as you noted is quite possible.)

However, the majority of the public thinks (according to polls) that the Republicans are the reason things are still bad. Heck, a plurality thinks it's JUST the Republicans (as opposed to both Congress and the President). That makes the economy minimal if not non-existent as an issue in this election. Bring on a second dip, have Obama propose a major jobs/relief package, have the Republicans in congress kill it, and then let the Republican candidate explain either he agrees with his congressional peers or thinks Obama did the right thing. Ouch.

Frankly, at this point I think Romney's going to win, but he's going to have to go to June because he can't pull a large enough plurality to lock it until the winner-take-all primaries come into play. That means six more months of listening to them all play to their base. That's six more months of the ~10% that is honestly "in the middle" becoming aware of what the republicans look like. I don't know that Obama will have Reagan-like margins, but I do think he's going to have enough of a victory margin that there'll be no doubt or opportunity to challenge the win.

As if we didn't have enough suspected rightwing violence over the past couple of days with the Mt. Ranier shooter, and the Queens firebombings of Muslims:

Fire damages abortion clinic

The State Fire Marshal’s office has taken over the investigation of a suspicious early morning fire that gutted the American Family Planning clinic on North Ninth Avenue.

Pensacola Fire Department Battalion Chief Steve Peake said the rear section of the two-story, wooden building was fully involved in flames when crews from nearby Station 6 arrived just after 1 a.m.

Formerly known as The Ladies Center and as Community Healthcare, the clinic has been the target of abortion protests for decades.

In 1984, two Pensacola men bombed the facility along with two doctors’ offices where abortions were provided. Matthew Goldsby and James Simmons were convicted of the Christmas Day bombings and sentenced to 10 years, but they serve only about half of their terms.

In 1994, protester Paul Hill killed John Britton, a doctor who provided abortions, and James Barrett, a volunteer who escorted patients, as they arrived in the clinic parking lot. Barrett’s wife, June, also was wounded.

Just heard (what in practice sounds like) a great weight loss idea on FB this morning.

Friends who resolve to lose weight: instead of focusing on numbers and scales, make small changes. Brush your teeth after every meal and snack. This serves as a signal to your mouth- and your mind- that it's time to stop eating. You'll be disinclined to ruin that minty freshness with whatever snacks are lying around!

That makes quite a bit of sense.

My chief problem with the school was that even after years in the school system--the same one--they still made me follow the rules that seemed to have been designed with the thought that if I was out from under direct supervision for five minutes, I would light something on fire or sell drugs or just leave.

Yeah, I get that a lot of kids are that way. I sat next to them. But by the time I was seventeen, I think they might have figured out that I wasn't. I had exactly one detention my entire school career, and that's because the school's bell system malfunctioned and made us all late to class.

only one of those I saw recently was they wanted to pay some welders 40,000 and were complaining that nobody would take the job.

Then, buried in the article, was the fact they went to a job fair and their competitors were offering 50,000. But because they couldn't get any takers for 40,000, people aren't "really" looking for work.

I wouldn't mind seeing the blurb about the fabricators if you can find it. I'd like to see one that didn't have crap like that buried inside.

Santorum's last minute rise is really not all that surprising. Iowa's GOP caucus has always been and shall always be a political anomaly. The people who participate are disproportionately extreme right wing hyper-religious conservatives, and therefore are not a useful indicator of the general Republican voting population.

Sanctimonious chest-thumpers often perform well in Iowa's caucus, only to flame out when other states have their more democratically-run primary elections.

Of course, the alternatives are between an isolationism and anarchy-promoting conspiracy theorist, a master flip-flopper (who happens to be ... gasp ... a Mormon), a repeat adulterer and self-serving financial opportunist, a buffoon governor from Texas (part deux), and a dim-witted Minnesotan with a poor grip on reality. GOP voters will no doubt engage in a fair amount of hand-wringing in the next few months.

They made an arrest in LA...

LAPD chief confident arson suspect is in custody

(CBS/AP) LOS ANGELES - Los Angeles Police Charlie Beck said he is confident authorities have their man after a person of interest was detained in connection with dozens of arson fires.

Beck tells City News Service that the ponytailed man had materials possibly linking him to the fires when his van was stopped by Los Angeles County sheriff's deputies early Monday morning near the Hollywood border with West Hollywood.

Fifty-five fires have been set since last week in Los Angeles and nearby communities, most of them in cars inside apartment carports. Those include a dozen fires on Monday.

No one was injured but many apartment dwellers were forced from their homes.

Los Angeles police and fire officials scheduled a midday news conference to discuss the detention of the man.

...The Los Angeles Times reported Monday that the man in custody "is a native of Germany who may have been in dispute with federal immigration officials."

The Times, citing unnamed sources, said the man may have been battling federal officials over the immigration status of a relative, but it was unclear whether that dispute was related in any way to the fires.

Meanwhile, multiple media outlets are reporting that the person in custody was driving a vehicle with British Columbia license plates. Sources have also told ABC News that an incendiary device was found in the blue van.

Local Family Disturbed by Topless Occupy Protest

EUGENE, Ore. -- A Eugene woman is speaking out after she and her family accidentally stumbled upon a topless protest outside City Councilor George Poling's house.

The woman says she was taking her six and eight year old boys out to look at Christmas lights when she saw a group of topless women, with bags over their heads and red paint on their bodies.

She said the demonstration was being video taped by a man.

The footage you see in the video above of the incident is from YouTube. We've blurred out portions of it due to its explicit nature.

It's the second protest outside Poling's house by Occupy Eugene members.

The woman who spoke to us did not want her face on camera but says her children are terrified and she's worried that Occupy Eugene is out of control and instilling fear in the community.

"My 6-year-old asked if they had been beaten and why were they bloody... were the masks covering up bloody faces, he didn't know they were masks, he thought maybe they were bandages," said the woman wanting to remain anonymous. "They were terrified that they were going to follow us."

re: #155 engineer dog

Each caucus is a meeting, literally a gathering of people ("tribal" in Steve's words.)

Certainly one can stand by themselves, but most people congregate under banners of candidates' names, in order to persuade the un-persuaded. Yes, "tribal". Only then is the count made, after the group-pressure has had its work.

So, I suppose, if you want to nominate Ms. XYZ, you can stand by yourself, try to convince others that Ms. XYZ is the person, and you all can then vote for that person.

But I really doubt there will be much of that, given the wide selection of nuttery all ready on offer to top the GOP pizza.

Even after the count is made, this is not the selection for the actual delegates. There is a state convention later, after county conventions. So the actual final count of delegates for Ms. XYZ could be 0 even if some locals show up on Tuesday and do a secret ballot with her name.

Apparently the 70-foot octopus float carried by an estimated 5,000 Occupy L.A. protesters at the end of today's Rose Parade wasn't awesome enough for KTLA, the premiere local station covering the event.

Reporters gushed over marching bands, floral arrangements and even a police horse brigade led by LAPD Chief Charlie Beck. But after float No. 43 had passed the finish line, the cameras shut off.

I guess they just aren't newsworthy anymore.

Iowa Republicans deserve the crankodoodle choices they are getting.

Sadly, they are intent on dragging down the entire country with them into the gutter.

Could be but I guarantee it's not intended for this.

Ohio Earthquake Linked To Fracking Injection Wells

On New Year’s Eve, a magnitude 4.0 earthquake struck northeastern Ohio, the second quake to strike the region in a week. Saturday’s earthquake, which occurred in an area not typically known for this type of natural disaster, is being traced back to fluid injection wells at a Youngstown fracking site. According to the Akron Beacon Journal, “the quake was the 11th over the last eight months in Mahoning County, all within two miles of the injection wells.” They also point out that injection wells have been linked to earthquakes in other states as well, including Arkansas, West Virginia, Colorado and Texas. Two of the Ohio injection wells in question are now being shut down.

Science!

It comes off as one of those strange rituals, sort of like some death rituals, or weird religions of remote indigenous tribes.

Kind of like painting skulls with flowers, which a corner of Austria is famous for I believe.

Weird stuff.

And then they act shocked when the rest of us just look at them with raised eyebrows.

Went for a 32 mile bike ride today...Felt pretty good, and I made it up a hill that defeated me last time I did this ride (only about a 700 foot climb, but at mile 22 I'm like, "Fuck me...") - maybe I don't need a granny gear after all.

Really wanted a burger after the ride, but all the fuckin' tourists created a 40 minute wait at the brewery...so I had to be satisfied with some country style pork spare ribs I braised last night. Life is okay.
