Gingrich: I’ll Force Women to Bear Rapists’ Babies

The Republican Party’s monstrous anti-choice positions
Politics • Views: 31,591

If anyone ever asks again why I left … no, ran away from the right, here’s one of the main reasons: the utter heartlessness of a party so morally bankrupt that it would force women to bear the babies of rapists and incestuous family members. Gingrich: I ‘Wouldn’t Make Exceptions’ For Abortions In Cases Of Rape Or Incest.

With Gingrich now changing his previously stated views, the majority of the Republican candidates for President are onboard with this monstrous position — a position not arrived at through reason or rationality, but through religious fanaticism. Bad craziness indeed.

Only through maintaining moral and ideological purity will this nation retain its favored status before God.

Though truth be told, ~99% of abortions are of non-assault related pregnancies. [Link: realweb.ifastnet.com...]

Which one? Because the one the GOP keeps sucking up to comes across as a real asshole.

For a party that claims to be all about smaller government, individual liberty, and freedom, the GOP candidates are sure quick to force their way into a woman's uterus and into her private life.

This is one of many, many reasons I could never be a Republican. It would mean supporting lunatics like these.

But Newt wasn't talking about those abortions. And there are lots of good reasons to end a pregnancy other than rape or incest.

8 Targetpractice  Tue, Jan 3, 2012 12:33:57pm

And if Newt wins the nomination, what will we hear in the general? "Well, I didn't really mean it!"

9 makeitstop  Tue, Jan 3, 2012 12:34:33pm

The one upside to all this craziness - it's going to make it way more difficult for the eventual nominee to 'run to the center' in the general election.

These chumps can't even see the center from where they've moved themselves to in the primaries.

10 erik_t  Tue, Jan 3, 2012 12:34:44pm

Can you imagine coming to grips with the fact that your very existence was due to your father sexually assaulting your mother?

Don't worry, Newt gives as little of a shit about the prospective children as he does about the rape victims.

we're not talking statistics. we're talking individual cases of women who should be able to determine what is to happen with their bodies.

I wish I was so certain about that. On the abortion issue it may not actually hurt them so much. Most women that this would drive away wouldn't vote for them to start with and many others will be like my family and just dismiss it as "talk, since there's no way they'd actually be able to do that."

Bad crazy all in the pursuit of gaining the votes of even more extreme social conservatives in places like Iowa.

And regardless of who wins, women nationally lose because these ideas are gaining a foothold and public health gets undermined because doctors are increasingly under pressure to not provide these services.

Not that that will stop them from making a mad dash to the center upon nomination. If it's Newt or Romney, look for a lot of talk about "opening dialogues" and "bringing attention to the issue." Remember that even when Paul Ryan's "Roadmap" was getting savaged by everybody with two neurons to rub together, the wingnuts were going "But at least he's bringing attention to the need for Medicare reform!"

Ugh. It's times like this I wish we had a system where elections lasted weeks instead of 18 months. This shit is ridiculous. I'm tired of this long, drawn out primary system that does nothing but poison the well.

10 state primaries a week for five weeks, and the election a month or so after that so we can all go on with our lives. The current system is untenable.

Agreed, the whole "rape, incest, safety of mother" business is the line we hear from RINOs to help them in elections by making them seem "reasonable," that they're not for wholesale banning of abortion, just against it being used as a "contraceptive."

It's just another excuse for the a-holes to fantasize they're sitting in judgment, somehow in control of the outcome.

Fact is, they're not. This is one major reason why abortion is legal in the first place. There is no end to the rage about this, among so-called "prolifers".

32 aagcobb  Tue, Jan 3, 2012 12:46:43pm

I wonder if Newt will get any criticism for proposing a new federal program for women pregnant by rapists, when clearly the conservative solution is just to threaten them with prison if they get an abortion?

I dunno. A lot of what I've seen suggests that while younger people and conservatives are generally much more accepting on certain social issues, like gay rights, anti-choice sentiment is just as strong as ever, if not stronger.

It's something that much of my generation has taken for granted and where many have only seen a really strong push from anti-choice people with little from pro-choice people. Many don't understand what things were like before Roe and don't realize how terrible returning to that time would be.

I totally agree. Abortion should be safe and legal, end of story. No government or religion should have ANY say at all in the matter; the only person who should be allowed to make that choice is the pregnant woman.

What's interesting about those numbers, particularly the increase since the 70s - or rather the increase since it became legal (Roe v Wade) - is that there was no way of counting it before. How many women died in back alley abortions? How many gave birth and abandoned their children or killed them? We have to believe that the number has to be at least as much as it is today because unwanted pregnancies has been an issue since time began.

Why is it the socons believe that people are so out of control that they have to be told what to do all the time?

Oh right. They themselves have so little restraint that self control is unthinkable. Plus they know they're not smart enough to make their own decisions.

At that point we start discussing the morality of, eg, carrying to term a child that is (to take this to its conclusion) a child that will live a life that is medically guaranteed to be brutally short and indescribably painful. I find this to be a worthwhile discussion, but one quite disconnected from this issue.

Having a father who was a rapist isn't the same as having a medical problem. Many people have to deal with the fact that their biological relatives are scumbags, but they live whole lives anyway.

As for the carrying to term when the child is medically not viable issue, that's another one, and one I find much harder...but I still have to finally say that I'm not OK with anyone but a woman's own conscience telling her whether or not to end a pregnancy.

Oh FFS. Of course they have abortions in Somalia. Abortions happen everywhere in the world and have been happening since, well, forever. The difference now is that it is possible for abortions in some places to be done safely, rather than adding another possible health risk to the woman's life.

Interestingly there are only a small handful of nations where abortion is 100% illegal, no exceptions. With the possible exception of Vatican City they're not places most people want to live.

In El Salvador (one of the places) a doctor or nurse who participates in an abortion is complicit in murder. So is the mother who had it done. Miscarriages are investigated as possible homicides.

So instead of keeping the pants on you want mothers to be able to murder their children?
What about the rights of the unborn?
on that note should Fathers be allowed to beat their sons because they simple fathered them?

Nice try. On your last question, if you are a bible believer then the answer is YES (according to your bible).

The mass of cells is not a child, and the mothers body almost from the moment of conception is trying to kill that foreign mass of cells anyway. And it actually does a pretty efficient job of it until the mass gets some protection (which her body does by natural suppression of her immune system until other protection is in place).

What about the rights of the mother?

Indeed, either one is in favor of abortion remaining legal or not. But like I said, most of those pushing the "rape/incest/safety of mother" bit are politicians looking to be seen as "reasonable," saying that they're not totally against abortion.

Yeah. It just makes me suspect that they don't care about the sanctity of human life so much as they do controlling women. I don't hear "I'll make an exception for rape" as caring, I hear it as "Well, if you can prove it's not your fault you're pregnant, it's OK."

re: #69 SanFranciscoZionist

Frankly, 'rape and incest' as an exception coming from a hardcore anti-legal-abortion speaker freaks me out, because it makes no sense. Either a fetus is a protected human life or it's not. You can't say 'abortion is murder, unless the individual in question's father was a scumbag'.

I don't actually agree with that. To begin with let me say though that I am absolutely pro choice, under any circumstances. I also understand that there are those that believe a fetus is a protected human life. I disagree with them completely, but I am willing to believe that they have an honest belief it it. But I do believe that it is possible to argue that notwithstanding that it may be a "protected human life" in someones eyes, that fetus is also a continued assault on the person of the mother. That is, the assault commenced with the rape, the depositing of the rapists seen in the woman, the fertilization of her egg, and the residing of the fetus in her womb. All of that is an assault oh her person in the same way as if someone broke in to your home and never left. The fact that the B & E took place months ago, does not change the fact that the trespass and assault on your property continues until the intruder and all his or her property are removed from your home. I in no way am trying to equate rape with B&E, simply for analogy purposes showing how someone might have an honest belief in fetus as protected life, but arguing that that life can be terminated in cases of rape. Murder is wrong. But killing to stop an assault even on one's property is supported by a great many conservatives.

new wrinkle from nigerian email scamsters:

Anti-Terrorist and Monetary Crimes Division
Fbi Headquarters In Washington, D.C.
Federal Bureau Of Investigation
J. Edgar Hoover Building
935 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW Washington, D.C. 20535-0001 Website: [Link: www.fbi.gov...]

Attention, this is the final warning you are going to receive from me do you get me?

I hope youre understand how many times this message has been sent to you?.

We have warned you so many times and you have decided to ignore our e-mails or because you believe we have not been instructed to get you arrested, and today if you fail to respond back to us with the payment then, we would first send a letter to the mayor of the city where you reside and direct them to close your bank account until you have been jailed and all your properties will be confiscated by the fbi. We would also send a letter to the company/agency that you are working for so that they could get you fired until we are through with our investigations because a suspect is not suppose to be working for the government or any private organization.

Your id which we have in our database been sent to all the crimes agencies in America for them to inset you in their website as an internet
fraudsters and to warn people from having any deals with you. This would have been solved all this while if you had gotten the certificate signed,
endorsed and stamped as you where instructed in the e-mail below. this is the federal bureau of investigation (fbi) am writing in response to the e-mail you sent to us and am using this medium to inform you that there is no more time left to waste because you have been given from the 3rd of January. As stated earlier to have the document endorsed, signed and stamped without failure and you must adhere to this directives to avoid you blaming yourself at last when we must have arrested and jailed you for life and all your properties confiscated.

You failed to comply with our directives and that was the reason why we didn't hear from you on the 3rd as our director has already been notified
about you get the process completed yesterday and right now the warrant of arrest has been signed against you and it will be carried out in the next 48hours as strictly signed by the fbi director. We have investigated and found out that you didn't have any idea when the fraudulent deal was committed with your information's/identity and right now if you id is placed on our website as a wanted person, i believe you know that it will be a shame to you and your entire family because after then it will be announce in all the local channels that you are wanted by the fbi.

As a good Christian and a honest man, I decided to see how i could be of help to you because i would not be happy to see you end up in jail
and all your properties confiscated all because your information's was used to carry out a fraudulent transactions, i called the efcc and they
directed me to a private attorney who could help you get the process done and he stated that he will endorse, sign and stamp the document at the sum of $98.00 usd only and i believe this process is cheaper for you. You need to do everything possible within today and tomorrow to get this process done because our director has called to inform me that the warrant of arrest has been signed against you and once it has been approved, then the arrest will be carried out, and from our investigations we learnt that you were the person that forwarded your identity to one impostor/fraudsters in Nigeria when he had a deal with you about the transfer of some illegal funds into your bank account which is valued at the sum of $10.500,000.00 usd.

I pleaded on your behalf so that this agency could give you till 1/3/2012 so that you could get this process done because i learnt that you were sent several e-mail without getting a response from you, please bear it in mind that this is the only way that i can be able to help you at this moment or you would have to face the law and its consequences once it has befall on you. Also, the BS on the drones.

Between November 2008 and January 2009 Pakistani Aryana Institute for Regional Research and Advocacy conducted a survey of the public opinion about the drone strikes in Federally Administered Tribal Areas. 5 teams of 5 researchers each interviewed a total of 550 people from all walks of life. Most people thought that the drone attacks were accurate and did not lead to anti-American sentiment and were effective in damaging the militants.

Based on the responses the researchers concluded 'The popular notion outside the Pakhtun belt that a large majority of the local population supports the Taliban movement lacks substance'. Most people thought that the drone attacks were accurate and did not lead to anti-American sentiment and were effective in damaging the militants. In addition the locals wanted the Pakistani forces to also target the militants. According to Farhat Taj a member of AIRRA the drones have never killed any civilians. Some people in Waziristan compare the drones to Ababils, the holy swallows sent by God to avenge Abraha, the invader of the Khana Kaaba.

and

Farhat Taj claims that locals usually appreciate drone attacks when they compare it with the Pakistan Army’s attacks, which always result in collateral damage. People said that when a drone would hover over the skies, they wouldn’t be disturbed and would carry on their usual business because they would be sure that it does not target the civilians, but the same people would run for shelter when a Pakistani jet would appear in the skies because of its indiscriminate firing. They say that even in the same compound only the exact room – where a high value target (HVT) is present – is targeted and others in the same compound are spared.

It may be worth considering pulling Pakistan apart.

re: #105 Charles

... But it is very revealing of how extreme the right wing has become that they're openly bragging about their support for an anti-human level of oppression ...

I think part of the reason for this is that saying something that's just plain crazy is a tried-and-true way to identify yourself as a follower of a particular authority. E.g. if you announce that you agree with L. Ron Hubbard that the sky is blue, you haven't exactly wowed anyone with your commitment to Scientology. But if you announce that you agree with L. Ron Hubbard that there are exactly 34.687 mother ships in orbit around Mars right now, you're sending a clear signal that you're "one of us". (I'm only using Scientology as an example... I know next to nothing about it, fortunately.)

So the WORSE it may sound to the rest of us ("No abortion when the mother's life is in imminent danger", "No health care if the insurance card doesn't go through the computer"), the BETTER it sounds to the kind of person whose attitude is: I don't care about the issues themselves; all I care about is who is on my side, who obeys the same authority I slavishly obey, who is in rapture to the same God that I'm in rapture to. Such a person's radar is fine-tuned to the worst, the craziest, ideological statements, because to him/her, that's a signal that the speaker is "one of us".

To the people who have invested their lives in slavish obedience to authority, the Republican candidates are now sending the signal: "Your life has not been wasted, and you're not a *&% idiot; in fact, I myself bow down to the same ideology that you do."

Gay community apologizes to Amy Koch for ruining her marriage

The gay and lesbian community of Minnesota has issued a letter of apology to recently resigned Senate Majority Leader Amy Koch for ruining the institution of marriage and causing her to stray from her husband and engage in an "inappropriate relationship."

"On behalf of all gays and lesbians living in Minnesota, I would like to wholeheartedly apologize for our community's successful efforts to threaten your traditional marriage," reads the letter from John Medeiros. "We apologize that our selfish requests to marry those we love have cheapened and degraded traditional marriage so much that we caused you to stray from your own holy union for something more cheap and tawdry."

Forgive us. As you know, we are not church-going people, so we are unable to fully appreciate that "gay marriage" is incompatible with Christian values, despite the fact that those values carry a biblical tradition of adultery such as yours. We applaud you for keeping that tradition going.

More proof of the ongoing war against Christians.

Top Ten List of Anti-Christian Acts of 2011

10) NBC television network twice took the words "under God" from the Pledge of Allegiance in its lead-up to the U.S. Open at Congressional Country Club.

9) In Franklin Massachusetts a pro-life man was beat by the police for peacefully handing out pro-life materials. The police accused him of conspiring to plant bombs.

8) A Christian man in Minnesota was fired from his job because one of his female co-workers attended a Bible Study that his wife led.

7) A Christian Florida teacher was suspended after school administrators discovered his support of traditional marriage posted on the internet.

6) In Kalispell Montana, pro-lifers were attacked by a fire-bomb during a prayer vigil in front of an abortion clinic. No one was hurt, but a police officer remarked pro-lifers should expect this sort of reaction to their activities.

5) Because of a complaint filed by the ACLU, the liberal 9th Circuit Court ruled that the Mt. Soledad War Memorial in San Diego was unconstitutional.

4) A homosexual activist effort caused investigations by the online money-transfer company, PayPal, against pro-family Christian organizations.

3) A Bible study was shut down by San Juan Capistrano, CA officials who claimed the group needed a permit because it posed a risk to public safety and health.

2) President Obama declared June "Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Pride Month" and hosted a White House celebration by homosexuals.

1) California Governor Jerry Brown signs a bill forcing public school curriculum and textbooks to "celebrate" homosexuals, transgenders and bisexuals.

The horror. The horror.

Also, the BS on the drones.

and

It may be worth considering pulling Pakistan apart.

People always talk about how we missed our chance in getting Osama bin Laden. This time we had a chance to take out another terrorist leader with the potential to cause mass casualties not only in the USA but around the world by the name of Anwar al-Awlaki. He decided to play that game and lost with his life. Anwar al-Awlaki is dead, assassinated, bombed, droned, call it what we like and the world is a better place for it.

And in short. UAVs minimize collateral damage through use of lower yield weapons and extended loiter times. They're not perfect but they're a lot more accurate then large fighter/attack aircraft.

I see that we have a big right wing blog outrage going on, calling for Alan Colmes to be fired from Fox News because he brought up Rick Santorum's bizarre treatment of the death of his premature baby.

The childbirth in 1996 was a source of terrible heartbreak -- the couple were told by doctors early in the pregnancy that the baby Karen was carrying had a fatal defect and would survive only for a short time outside the womb. According to Karen Santorum's book, ''Letters to Gabriel: The True Story of Gabriel Michael Santorum,'' she later developed a life-threatening intrauterine infection and a fever that reached nearly 105 degrees. She went into labor when she was 20 weeks pregnant. After resisting at first, she allowed doctors to give her the drug Pitocin to speed the birth. Gabriel lived just two hours.

What happened after the death is a kind of snapshot of a cultural divide. Some would find it discomforting, strange, even ghoulish -- others brave and deeply spiritual. Rick and Karen Santorum would not let the morgue take the corpse of their newborn; they slept that night in the hospital with their lifeless baby between them. The next day, they took him home. ''Your siblings could not have been more excited about you!'' Karen writes in the book, which takes the form of letters to Gabriel, mostly while he is in utero. ''Elizabeth and Johnny held you with so much love and tenderness. Elizabeth proudly announced to everyone as she cuddled you, 'This is my baby brother, Gabriel; he is an angel.' ''

This is one of those subjects that Alan Colmes should have known better than to bring up, but he was not wrong.

And as the article above says, I'm one of those who thinks Santorum's behavior was ghoulish - in the extreme.

My vet recommended a food that is supposed to be better for the cat but hasn't pushed it once I explained that he wouldn't eat it. She prefers to have him eating (and thus better hydrated since it's wet food) than worrying about getting him to eat lesser quantities of stuff "better for him".

She did insist that the cigars and evening glass of sherry were right out though. ;)

That's relevent, and important. That kind of situation is exactly what people who want to ban later-term abortions deny ever happens, and it's very relevent, given Santorum's stance on abortion.

What Colmes decided to bring up really isn't relevent, and frankly, what he said was tasteless and made Santorum look like a victim.

I dissolved tar with Fresca once. I was working for the Forest Service in Montana (1988 fire season) and we were building burn piles to clean up some trees and brush we'd fallen during the fire. These were then covered with tar paper to keep them dry until the first heavy snow, at which point someone would go ignite them. Well, being an idiot, I was cutting tar paper with my good buck knife, and gunked up the blade. At lunch, at a loss for something to use to wash the blade, I poured my Fresca over it (hey, I like Fresca...deal with it), and was able to wipe the tar off in seconds.

re: #386 Slumbering Behemoth

The Green Party would have better luck, I think.

I can see an atheist PAC. But an atheist party sounds too much like a Christian party. It's too narrow. If I want to work politically with people I want them to be from all walks of life. Where we work together on common goals. If I want an economic solution I don't want some kind of "atheist" economic solution. Some things are naturally secular and we don't need to put some kind of atheist seal of approval on it.

Heh. I'm chilling the booze in case he wins.

Not only will that give him momentum and get the Paulbots going, but it will give the GOP leadership fits, forcing them to call Iowa irrelevant after all this nonsense. Plus, it will be good for a few laughs.

Being a skeptic simply removes one way to be an idiot about politics. There's plenty of others left over.

And just becoming a skeptic doesn't make you perfect at it, either.

This is the thing. I sometimes see people (even here) going on about how removing religion would somehow give us a better, more rational society, and I gotta say, the proportion of smart, egalitarian atheists to stupid asshole atheists seems to pretty much match the spread of every other faith-or-lack-thereof group out there. Anecdotally speaking.

Not to mention that getting momentum in Iowa might be enough to convince him to seek a third party run, which would well worth suffering through the rest of the primaries to see.

The Netherlands have one of the most liberal abortion laws in the world.
They also have one of the lowest abortion rate worldwide.
Sounds like a contradiction? No. But why?

1) strong voluntary family planning movement
2) efficient public health insurance system
3) successful strategies for the prevention of teenage pregnancy (including sex education, open discussions on sexuality in mass media, educational campaigns and low barrier services)
4) wide acceptance of sterilization.

If those Republican troglodytes wanted to save unborn lives, that would be the way to go. But of course, it's not about life, but about ideology.

Personally I liked this one...

This won't help her one bit (2+ / 0-)
and it will give OWS detractors one more reason to scorn and dismiss what is a very legitimate movement. A lose-lose.

I like to see them thinking about the optics of OWS. Having a realistic idea of how others are going to view this stuff is important.

Let’s be honest.

First Republicans aren’t smart enough to avoid hypothetical questions that make them look callous, but whose odds of occurring are somewhat less than winning an Academy Award or dying by slipping in the bathtub.

Second, there have been over 1,000,000 abortions in the US for more than 35 straight years.  If you believe a human fetus has the same moral value as an ugly mole or a rotten tooth then you shouldn’t care.

These silly arguments on the fringe of an issue will never amount to anything more than preaching to the choir.

No argument here, either. I empathized with Cindy Sheehan at first, but she quickly stopped doing herself any favors. Once she started siding with Hugo Chavez, I was done with her for good.

It's really sad that she's gone so far out. She could have been a force for a lot of good after her son died. Now she's just another kook.

I want to also add. Say one were to create an atheist political party which of course would require a platform. Said atheist party thus, for example comes up with a platform were upon Issue "X" is firmly supported.

Let's make this issue increased gun control. Because it is an atheist party two things will happen. Said atheist party will assume it is speaking for all atheists and that they also support increased gun control. We also wind up with the false assumption then that all atheists believe in increased gun control because "the Atheist Party has it in their platform."

Then what about foreign policy? Environmental policy; taxation; entitlements; defense spending; etc. There isn't and shouldn't be an atheist consensus on many if not most of these issues. It would be absurd for many atheists to support an atheist party that also support isolationism if this is something they oppose.
