GA GOP State Rep. Manning: I’m Afraid of Romney’s Mormon Faith, But It’s Better Than a Muslim

Wingnuts • Views: 28,277

Republican Georgia State Rep. Judy Manning is supporting Newt Gingrich because she’s afraid of Mitt Romney, him being a Mormon and all.

But she does have to admit that even a scary Mormon is “better than a Muslim.”

These are the people making laws in the state of Georgia.

State Reps. Sharon Cooper (R-east Cobb) and Judy Manning (R-Marietta) have both endorsed Gingrich. …

By contrast, Manning believes Rick Santorum doesn’t have the seasoning to unseat Obama, and Mitt Romney concerns her.

“I think Mitt Romney is a nice man, but I’m afraid of his Mormon faith,” Manning said. “It’s better than a Muslim. Of course, every time you look at the TV these days you find an ad on there telling us how normal they are. So why do they have to put ads on the TV just to convince us that they’re normal if they are normal?”

Why do mormons support the GOP? Their power base overwhelming distrutst them, and maybe even hates them.

Hmmm... Let's try something else.

“I think Mitt Romney Newt Gingrich is a nice man, but I’m afraid of his Mormon Christian faith,” Manning said. “It’s better than a Muslim Jew. Of course, every time you look at the TV these days you find an ad on there telling us how normal they are. So why do they have to put ads on the TV just to convince us that they’re normal if they are normal?"

The LDS Church hierarchy is overwhelmingly white, socially conservative, anti-abortion, anti-gay (see Prop 8 in Cali), so the GOP kinda fits.

Because they are Conservatives by nature. They just aren't crazy, like the gaspers that make up a lot of the base. Outside of a new third party, where can they go?

Damn good question, though.

Funny because as an atheist I'm not afraid of Romney's Mormon faith. Fear like this is for cowards and people that are incapable of vocalizing their thoughts in a rational manner.

"If the Mormon faith adhered to a past philosophy of pluralism, multi-wives, that doesn’t follow the Christian faith of one man and one woman, and that concerns me.”

If the Christian faith adhered to it's past philosophies, it wouldn't follow your one man and one woman "concerns" either. Stupid [deleted].

Also, the LDS explicitly forbade African Americans to join. I believe this ban was lifted in 1978.

She "apologized" to Mormons but never did so for Muslims. And of course you know where atheists sit in this food pyramid. Regardless of this apology we all know where Christians sit in the social hierarchy of American politics and American life.

21 dragonfire1981  Sat, Jan 7, 2012 3:01:45pm

This all goes back to Fundamentalist Christian beliefs. The going belief among these people is that anyone who does not worship Christ via the Christian Bible (either NIV or KJV) is someone to be feared.

They believe that anyone who follows a so-called "False" religion is in league with the Devil. In fact, a lot of these folks believe that Mormonism is a cult and Islam is, in fact, a creation of Satan himself.

They should realize that the people they have allied themselves with, such as Bryan Fischer, are going after the Mormons as soon as they are done with the Gays. When your "ally" says you literally don't have the right to practice your religion, you should rethink which side you want to be on in the culture war.

Prop. 8 -- Support from Religious organizations

The Roman Catholic Church, as well as a Roman Catholic lay fraternal organization, the Knights of Columbus, firmly supported the measure. The bishops of the California Catholic Conference released a statement supporting the proposition, a position met with mixed reactions among church members, including clergy.

Rick Santorum considers the concept of anyone being able to get a college education "snobbery".

TRENDING: Santorum: Obama's education stance is 'snobbery'

Manchester, New Hampshire (CNN) - Rick Santorum called President Barack Obama's education goals an agenda of "hubris" on Saturday, saying he is "outraged" that the president thinks "every child in America should go to college."

"The hubris of this president to think that he knows what's best for you [...] This is the kind of snobbery that we see from those that think they know how to run our lives," the former Pennsylvania senator said in a forum at St. Anselm's New Hampshire Institute of Politics.

Obama has repeatedly said he wants the United States to have the highest proportion of college graduates in the world by 2020. Earlier this year, while announcing plans to reform "No Child Left Behind," Obama also said he intends for every student to graduate "career and college ready."

But Santorum, whose children's education includes home-schooling, argued that not everyone is suited for a college education.

You know when we moved to Las Vegas a group of nice young Mormon guys helped carry our furniture from the moving truck into our house for hours in 110 degree heat once they heard my husband was deployed and I was handling the move myself. They were great, knew we were Methodists, didn't try to talk us into Mormonism, and didn't even want to let me buy them sandwiches. I insisted, and my atheist mom went to Panera Bread anyway. They did eat them, and drank the bottled waters once we put them in their hands.

So, Mormons would force us to help out military wives in bad weather?

Really, I am at a total loss. I am not interested in joining their church, but they are nice folks. My son is good friends with two girls who are Mormons here in Oklahoma, and their parents are great also. They are moving to Phoenix this summer because they just aren't totally comfortable here...which is a real shame.

so we know now that mormon is worse than protestant, but better than muslim. since we know there are more items on the list, this is what would be described in computer science as a 'partial ordering'

which begs the question of where catholic, jew, and all the others fall on the ordering of religion from good to bad

I tend to lump them all together and disregard the entire mob

If the underclass isn't kept ignorant, they won't be so easy to manipulate.

Back in the Dark Ages, it was easy. Education was limited to the upper class while the poor were left uneducated and illiterate.

These days, they have to work harder to keep people stupid. Now it takes a concerted effort from blogs, a news network, talk radio, and politicians bent on pandering to the idiots and bigots.

re: #91 funky chicken

You know when we moved to Las Vegas a group of nice young Mormon guys helped carry our furniture from the moving truck into our house for hours in 110 degree heat once they heard my husband was deployed and I was handling the move myself. They were great, knew we were Methodists, didn't try to talk us into Mormonism, and didn't even want to let me buy them sandwiches. I insisted, and my atheist mom went to Panera Bread anyway. They did eat them, and drank the bottled waters once we put them in their hands.

So, Mormons would force us to help out military wives in bad weather?

I'm not scared of Mormons. I'm downright angry at some of the shit that the Mormon Church itself pulls. But an organized religion is not the adherents of that religion. Any individual Mormon I'll take based on their own beliefs and actions.

And Romney's suck. Not because he's a Mormon. But because he's a vacillating panderer who is willing to junk any principle no matter how long held in order to get elected. I don't even know why, which is the odder part. Why is Romney so determined to lead a party that forces him to deny most of his life in order to lead it?

re: #127 wrenchwench

I think advertising for religion kind of points to the logical flaw in their underpinning, at least for doctrinaire religions. For the religions that believe that you have to follow certain rules, behave a certain way, know certain texts, etc., in order to achieve salvation/glorify god, etc., the fact that there are tons of people on earth who have/had never really heard of the religion is a bit of a puzzler. Did God just not give a shit about those people, or is his whole plan that he'll inspire a few guys with religious beliefs which are otherwise indistinguishable from all the other religious beliefs out there and set them out to convert the world? Is that really god's plan? Because it kind of sucks.

And if you can achieve a meaningful relationship with god, salvation, etc. without the doctrinaire religion, then what use is it? Some religious people have said their religious doctrine makes it easier to establish that link with god, but then, isn't that, like, cheating? Shouldn't God take that into account in judgement, or, if it's not about judging, again, why is he content to sit back as highly imperfect followers fuck up the proselytizing of his one true religion?

Whoever came up with "God moves in mysterious ways" must have been patting himself on the back for years after he came up with that one. It's pretty much all you need to get around the obvious anthropological underpinnings of religion.

Ninety percent of respondents thought whites and blacks could share their vision of society. About 80 percent said the same of Hispanics, Jews and conservative Christians. More than 70 percent said it of immigrants, and 64 percent said it of Muslims. Atheists had the lowest rating at 54 percent.

Atheist: 47.6%
Muslim: 33.5%
African-American 27.2%
Asian-Americans: 18.5%
Hispanics: 18.5%
Jews: 11.8%
Conservative Christians: 6.9%

Also a good survey to point out for those whining about 'reverse racism' towards whites.

Egyptian women cane morality police

Vigilante gangs of ultra-conservative Salafi men have been harassing shop owners and female customers in rural towns around Egypt for “indecent behavior,” according to reports in the Egyptian news media. But when they burst into a beauty salon in the Nile delta town of Benha this week and ordered the women inside to stop what they were doing or face physical punishment, the women struck back, whipping them with their own canes before kicking them out to the street in front of an astonished crowd of onlookers.

Replace Romney with Bush and then imagine how many people said the same thing about him back in 2000 and how wrong they were. Especially with a GOP Congress. Given that the GOP is actually crazier then it was just 10 years ago I could imagine any Republican in the WH including Romney being beyond disastrous.

In response, the group pointed to the al Nour party’s recent election triumph in which they won nearly 30 percent of parliament seats, as giving them a mandate to enforce Sharia law. They claimed they not only had the backing of members of Al Nour’s leadership council, but that al Nour leadership had in fact provided the funding to mobilize young volunteers.

The Al Nour party’s Facebook page however denied financing the group.

In a desperate effort to gain control of their public message, Al Nour party officials have tried to control the actions of their followers and silence individual Salafi sheiks, like Abdel Moneim el Shahat in conservative Alexandria, who has suggested covering the “obscene” figures on Egypt’s ancient monuments with wax.

The young members of the morality police held their first meeting this week, according to a report in the Al Masry Al Youm newspaper, “to determine the tasks and geographical jurisdictions of the first volunteers, who would monitor people’s behavior in the street and assess whether they contradicted God’s laws. Volunteers would wear white cloaks and hold bamboo canes to beat violators and later would be provided with electric tasers.”

If she'll have him he's probably going to pick Susanna Martinez of New Mexico. Mitt needs to offset the ill will he and his party have generated from women and latinos during this primary season, and she'd be an antidote to a diversion from charges the fact that the Republicans are a bunch of misogynistic hispanophobes.

Might help with the misogyny, but the way she's been going after the drivers license issue here, she might not seem pro-Hispanic even while being one.

And she's said she won't leave her current post, but that's not worth anything when it's said before the offer.

Could do that as well. With Rubio he would get the Southern vote locked in and some Hispanic votes. But I think the latter is negligible.

I think latinos are more likely to be swayed by a female member of their community than a man like Rubio. The idea of voting for "Mom" will generate a fair amount of good will.

No she wouldn't. I guess you missed the 2008 elections because Sarah Palin did not help the GOP with women at all. Filling in quotas with a female or Latino pick will not change how women or Latinos view the GOP. In fact, there's plenty of proof that it does the opposite. It gives the impression that the GOP thinks minorities and women are stupid an simply vote based on gender or color. We don't. Policies matter. Romney can try to fill any quota he wants with his VP pick and it won't make the GOP look more minority or woman friendly. We are not impressed with window dressing.

Interesting. It looks to me like as years went by, they started making the outer walls on the things, probably to protect people from being burned. The early ones look like they toasted the toast in basically the same way as the ones do today, but were just open so people (children) might accidentally get burned.

Actually Rubio is the only GOP candidate to win a majority of Hispanic votes. And that's because he's Cuban and Cubans are already largely Republican so they didn't have to change their voting patterns to vote for him. Everywhere else the numbers for Latino voter looked like 2008, 2/3 for Democrats and 1/3 for the GOP, even for Latino GOP candidates. Martinez in NM and Sandoval in NV won with white votes not a Hispanic votes. I think it's arguable that their is no Latino candidate that will provide Romney much help outside of Rubio in Florida.

Minorities care about policies, we couldn't give a damn about window dressing.

I suppose my point is that policies matter. Palin was picked in an attempt to win women who supported Hillary Clinton over the GOP. No consideration was given to the fact that those women wouldn't vote for a woman who subscribed to the same policies that turned them off from the GOP in the first place. It's not enough to fill a quota. If a woman or Latino pick supports the same policies that a male or white Republican does, it won't help. Minorities are pretty good at spotting tokens being used for window dressing.
