Leading Evangelist: Romney Wears ‘Magical Underwear with Satanic Markings’

In case you forgot, or missed it, a lot of American evangelicals are not exactly enamored with Mitt Romney: Satan Cheers Graham, Osteen, Starr for Not Telling the Truth About Mormonism.

ST PETERSBURG, Fla., Jan. 9, 2012 /Christian Newswire/ — Bill Keller, the world’s leading Internet Evangelist and the founder of liveprayer.com, with over 2.4 million subscribers worldwide reading the daily devotional he has written every morning for 12 years on the issues of the day from a Biblical worldview, says Satan is cheering Rev. Franklin Graham, Joel Osteen, and the former special prosecutor during the Clinton impeachment investigation Kenn Starr for being too gutless to tell the truth about Mormon cult member Mitt Romney.

In the past weeks as it becomes more likely former Mass. Governor and member of the Mormon cult Mitt Romney will win the Republican nomination to run against President Barack Obama, more and more high profile Christians are putting politics over souls by not telling the truth about the true beliefs of the Mormon cult and why a Mormon is no more a Christian than a Muslim is.

Keller, who in 2007 was in the national news after coining the phrase, ‘A vote for Romney is a vote for Satan,” said, “It is sad to see a man of God like Franklin Graham go into the nation media and state that he would vote for a cult member like Romney whose beliefs lead the eternal souls of men to hell. Osteen is a gutless coward, nothing more than a motivational speaker, who ignorantly lies to people by saying that a Mormon is a Christian, when Mormon doctrine is 100% inconsistent with Biblical Christianity. Starr, well known for his Christian views, made the political case why he could vote for a Mormon without once dealing with the spiritual implications of having a cult member as President.”

Keller went on to say, “People are free to believe whatever they want. I have no problem with a person of any faith running for office. The only thing I have ever asked Romney or any member of his cult like Glenn Beck to do is to tell the truth. Romney LIES when he calls himself a Christian, since he and members of his cult believe their ‘jesus’ was created through the sexual union of their ‘god’ who was once a man, and Mary, meaning their ‘jesus’ is NOT a deity, is the brother of Lucifer, and once visited the United States. The ‘god’ and ‘jesus of the Mormon cult is NOT the God and Jesus of the Bible, and the final authority for Mormons is NOT the Bible, but the writings of their cult’s founder Joseph Smith who was a documented con man, pedophile, polygamist, racist, and murderer.”

Keller concluded, “Listen, if Mitt Romney wants to wear magical underwear with Satanic markings that he believes protects him and thinks he will die and become the god of his own planet with an endless supply of women to create spirit babies with, that is up to him. I think it is journalistic malpractice for the media not to at least tell the truth about what Romney and those in his cult believe, while calling anyone with the guts to tell the truth about his cult a bigot. It is inexcusable for Christian leaders like Graham, Osteen, a respected Christian like Starr, and any other true Christian to help perpetuate the lie Mormons are Christians without any concern for the fact the Bible states those who believe a false gospel will die and their souls lost for eternity in hell!”

Whoa.

Romney is definitely next in the GOP’s line of succession (John McCain’s painfully grudging endorsement made that clear), but if anything can get in the way of his nomination it’s the fanatical religious right.

Um, well, Mormons do wear "special" underwear. Mens garments are longer than your basic men's shorts in a store, and women can't be shown having belly buttons, or shoulders, they don't wear sleveless, they wear capped sleeves. DON'T ASK. It was a business experience, when my company bought stores in Utah. I only wish I were making this up!

Even if the religious right nutjobs don't keep Romney from getting the nomination, they sure as hell won't vote for him. They'll stay home.

Fundamentalists and evangelicals view Mormons as barely a half-step above Satanists. This has been true for a long, long time. It's not going to change because a Mormon gets the GOP nod. Voting for Mitt would mean giving tacit approval to a religious denomination that these people consider a satanic, heretical cult. Not gonna happen.

I really hate it when a Republican loses the presidency for the wrong reason.

Won't happen anytime soon.

If Obama wins a second term, the far right will just double down on the fail and claim it was because Romney wasn't conservative enough. If Romney wins, the far right will STILL double down on the fail in an attempt to push the POTUS further to right.

On the other hand, the New York Times editorial policy required that belly buttons be airbrushed off swimsuit and lingerie models until around 1970. When they realized that no one knew why they were doing that, they stopped.

I think it plays on the human tendency towards Obsessive-Compulsive rituals. Especially with things like clothing (burka, magic underwear, special hats). Once people get used to them they'll feel something's wrong unless they have their special attire, less likely to leave the religion because it makes them feel comfortable.

Just for reference, here is an excerpt from Bill Keller's obit of Chris Hitchens:

Well Know Writer and Atheist Christopher Hitchens Died from Esophageal Cancer

[...]

I was always amazed at how the secular media loved Christopher Hitchens. They put him on every program to promote his last book, "God is not Great, How Religion Poisons Everything." [...]

Of course the first logical question is why? The answer is no more complicated than the fact that the masses who have made the choice to live in open rebellion to God do not want to be held accountable for their choices. [....]

Once a person makes that foolish choice, you can easily see how rejecting the Bible, rejecting Jesus Christ, embracing a theory like evolution, and supporting others who are involved in every type of sin imaginable follows. Obviously if you deny there even is a God, it makes it easy to dismiss the book God wrote, the Bible, as simply a book "written by men" or a million other idiotic responses you will get from people who have rejected the Absolute Truth of God's Word. [...]

How does a ridiculous "theory" like evolution become accepted by the mainstream culture as the explanation for man's existence? Men can say they never have seen God, therefore there is no God. However, they are still left with the little problem of explaining how we came to be. So they have turned to this laughable notion that we evolved from a drop of pond scum, to a monkey, and voila, here we are! LOL! Of course they can never tell you where that drop of pond scum, or where that first cell came from, or the "big bang" that some claim started it all. In the end, those who embrace this "theory" are left flopping around like a fish out of water.

[...]

Yes, evolution, the source of all evils.

I wonder if Keller will ever connect Mormonism with Charles Darwin.

It's really ironic with these evangelicals. They take such a pounding from "reality" and "logic" and "common sense" from the outside world that all that's left for them to pick on is Islamism and Mormonism. And voila, that is why they project all their frustration and hate and on these much smaller religious, often helpless contingents.

They're great at judging others but if you put them under the microscope they go nuts and scream "You're persecuting Christians!!!!!"

Bill Keller, on President Obama:

Is It Possible for a One-World Government, Economy, and Religion as the Bible Says

Is it really possible for there to be a one-world government, economy, and religion as the Bible speaks of? When I was going through my formal theological training 20 years ago, I have to admit that I really never saw the probability of some of the things spoken of in the Book of Revelation happening in my lifetime. I thought it was impossible in the world as we knew it in the 90s to ever see a one-world government, or economy, or religion. There were just too many factors that made that type of scenario impossible. Fast forward to the year 2009, and we now live in a world that is ripe for the emergence of a one-world government, economy, and religion.

My warnings for the past year about King Obama, excuse me, President Obama, have been about the spiritual impact of his philosophies on politics and life and the fact he opposes God on every major spiritual issue of our day. The danger of his socialist political ideology is that it puts the United States in play to see the formation of a one-world government, economy, and religion. It now aligns us with most of the European countries and many other nations around the world, making it very possible for the pages of Revelation to be fulfilled, even in our lifetime!

[...]

A one-world government could easily fall into place as well. With the UN and other organizations involving numerous nations, with the European Union, the reality of a North American Union involving the United States, Canada, and Mexico, the ability to pull together the various governments around the world becomes a much easier task. Once again, the political philosophies of King Obama, I mean President Obama, make the United States a ripe candidate for these type of alliances that could easily evolve into a one-world government.

[...]

I was REALLY hoping the nasty attacks on Mormonism weren't going to start up, but I didn't have much hope that they wouldn't. It's pathetic. *sigh*

re: #29 Killgore Trout

I think it plays on the human tendency towards Obsessive-Compulsive rituals. Especially with things like clothing (burka, magic underwear, special hats). Once people get used to them they'll feel something's wrong unless they have their special attire, less likely to leave the religion because it makes them feel comfortable.

I don't entirely disagree with the OCD part, but there are all sorts of attire that signify identity, not just religion: professional (a judge's black robe, a doctor's white coat, a chef's hat), ethnic (numerous, take your pick), political (numerous, take your pick), or social (baseball caps, cowboy hats & boots, $500 designer handbags, body piercings, tattoos, shaved heads, mohawks, sports team jerseys).

People in all of the above groups may indeed feel something's wrong unless they have their special attire, but I seriously doubt that feeling is very high up on the list of reasons not to leave one's religion.

I've never heard of anyone saying, "I was really miserable in religion X and decided that it was no good for me and I should leave, but the thought that I might have to stop wearing my special [fill in the blank] stopped me in my tracks 'cause, y'know, not being able to wear it would be much more uncomfortable than the other stuff that's bothering me." That doesn't make sense. Why would someone even have to stop wearing the attire if they were that attached to it?

Pretty confident that's wrong too ... but hey, whatever. If you're not part of it, all religions have practices that look pretty danged weird.

Imagine you never heard of sports. Then you suddenly saw some NFL uniforms at the game and thought okay, that's all just colorful function. Then you turn around and look at some wild fans-Team jerseys, weird hair, team colors of make up.... Then you see the Marine Color guard.

It ain't just religion that has a strange sense of fashion and superstition I'm afraid. Just ask sports fans.

I'm sorry to think that the precedent has been set. Fear of the other has been the go too for so long. It will provide a societal interest to see it go against someone so 'ordinary' (Romney) tho. It will be a tad bit shocking I think for normal, mildly secular voters. Will the GOP retrospect about the treatment of Obama? Doubt it, the same haters will hate.

She stars in the film adaption of Douglas Kennedy's novel The Woman in the Fifth, which is planned with a release in late 2011.[14]
In Sarah's Key (2011), Scott Thomas starred as an American journalist living in Paris who discovers that the apartment her husband is renovating for them was once the home of a Jewish family who were taken away in the Vel' d'Hiv Roundup; she becomes obsessed with learning what happened to the family's daughter, Sarah. Also in 2011, Scott Thomas will star in the upcoming film Bel Ami as another love interest of George Duroy (played by Robert Pattinson).[15]
In summer 2011 Scott Thomas returned to London's West End to star as Emma in Harold Pinter's Betrayal at the Comedy Theatre. The revival was brought to life by director Ian Rickson. Her husband was played by Ben Miles and the love triangle was completed by Douglas Henshall.

I once saw a Harold Pinter play on Broadway when I was an easily impressed, pretentious teenager. "The Birthday Party" or some such stupid, boring shit. I went with my dad and he wanted to leave at intermission! "This is garbage! Why couldn't we see a musical?" He was so right.

I honestly don't have a problem with modest, conservative styles of dress. Actually, I wouldn't mind seeing less of my fellow Americans while out in public, to be honest.

What does the good reverend have to say about Rick Santorum or the newly converted Newt Gingrich? Especially Gingrich, who chose to join the cult of Roman Catholicism to satisfy his third wife?

Good grief.

Given our outrageous overweight/obesity rates, I couldn't agree with you more.

She's taken hell for it, but I think Michelle Obama chose very wisely for her traditional first lady cause. Only 20% of Americans smoke (as opposed to 50% back in the 60s), but this generation may actually be the first in US history to have shorter lifespans than their parents. And obesity is a major cause.

I can understand those who are raised in a religion, or even those who weren't and adopt one for all the reasons some people need that, but when people, like Beck or the Newt, change for personal reasons that likely have nothing to do with a sudden realization that they have discovered the ultimate truth, then this strikes me as no more sincere than changing cars because the old one wasn't cool enough.

I've come to the conclusion after a great deal of thought (I was a religion major in college, after all) that religion is merely the effort of the finite to limit the infinite, especially among the monotheistic faiths. Most of them are about defining what or who God isn't rather than trying to understand what having faith really means in a world that makes it increasingly difficult to buy the fairy tales peddled by the literalists.

Okay, excuse me while I have one of my flights of fancy.

I was just standing at the sink washing out my coffee filter so I could make a fresh pot, and I was thinking about guys in fancy religious outfits thing, then my imagination pounced without warning and sent me into fits of giggles:

Instead of having religious fights/wars we can have international, interfaith beauty pageants! We can gather all the religious leaders from the various religions & their sects—rabbis, popes (east & west), cardinals, gurus, muftis, ayatollahs, etc. and we have this HUGE contest where they all show off their finest garments and accoutrements. In order to make sure the votes are unbiased, we'll probably need to draft some atheists as judges.

Granted, it's probably not gonna be much fun for Mormons, Amish, Protestants, and assorted Evangelicals, but I'm pretty sure the Catholics will kick ass!

// LOL, I soooo wish I could project what's in my head right now into a video and show it to you guys. Do you suppose I'm gonna go to hell for such thoughts?? ;)

My thought tends more to the conclusion that it is first and foremost about maintaining an identifiable social identity for the individual, and secondly about having supreme reason for exerting control over others. The dogma and all that follows are simply the way one rationalizes the above desires.

Needless to say, the related discussion on forms of dress are just visual labels for the same rationalizations.

Romney's religion is a dumb reason for deciding to vote against him, of course. But he is giving everyone better reasons.

Romney's pretense that the successful Massachusetts health care reform law is not really the basis of the federal law (and similar to it) is starting to get really annoying -- because he is lying outright about the federal law in order to appeal to the tea party and other far right extremists.

He reportedly came up with this, for example, "I do not want to live in a world where we have Obamacare telling us which insurance we have to have, which doctor we can have, which hospital we go to. I believe in a setting, as I described this morning, where people are able to choose their own doctor, choose their own insurance company. If they do not like their insurance company or their provider, they can get rid of them."

He certainly knows that everything he suggested about the federal Affordable Care Act in that quotation is untrue. The federal law allows people to buy insurance from any company they choose and use the private doctors and hospitals they choose and just requires everyone to get themselves an insurance policy, same as the Massachusetts state law. He certainly has to know that.

In fact, both the federal and MA state law increase a person's freedom to choose their insurance company and change companies when they want, because the new company cannot use a person's health as a reason to avoid selling them a policy.

He has been misrepresenting, and I would say deliberately lying about, the federal law to get support from the far right who want to believe that kind of stuff -- and it is harmful to the people of this country for him to be deliberately misleading people about the federal law, and thereby support efforts to defeat health care reform outside of Massachusetts.

Chicken Soup for Killgore's Soul:

Occupy Wall Street is wandering in the desert. This much was made clear on New Year’s Day. Sitting at the airport in London waiting for my flight back to America, I watched a stream of hysterical tweets from OWS’s Twitter account. They described the attempted “reoccupation” of New York City in terms usually reserved for genuine crises. It was 4 a.m. on the East Coast, and the occupiers were in the midst of an attempt to grab the first headlines of 2012 — ostensibly by encouraging their members to get themselves arrested, which is apparently the new metric of revolutionary success.

When I landed at JFK, I expected to find all sorts of stories filling the Web and to head straight down to Zuccotti Park to see what had happened. After all, the disproportionate media coverage that OWS received — which was more in line with the protesters’ deluded sense of self-importance than commensurate with the public’s interest or the coherence of their aims — was its greatest achievement of 2011. But there was nothing, and nor was there much sign of OWS in New York. In the seven hours I had been out of touch with those on the ground, America’s media had gone wild with apathy and OWS had gone home. Evidently, occupying is so last year.

Having been cleared out of most of its major encampments — New York, Oakland, Portland, Los Angeles — the occupation is now homeless. This presents it with something of a problem. The sine qua nonof an occupation is that its practitioners have to stay put (the clue is rather in the title), but the occupiers have now been rendered nomads. They have not quite reverted to diffusion — prior to congregating on September 17 last year, its members were living variously and waiting for the next G8 — but are now a wandering rump, in search of a new tactic. They seem to have settled upon flashmob-esque descents on major public spaces, which are keenly filmed in the craven hope that something bad happens. In New York so far this year, their sets have been Grand Central Terminal and Broadway. (The latter being a suitable home for many involved, perhaps.) They may be coming soon to a sidewalk near you.

Once they’ve assembled, we have heard the same old misunderstanding of the First Amendment that characterized last year’s hijinks: that it legitimizes all behavior, providing that such behavior is in support of political protest. “OWS blocked Broadway! Being moved away by police. WTF!?” read one New Year’s Day tweet. WTF? It seems rather self-explanatory to me.

During their pathetic attempt to retake New York’s Zuccotti Park on New Year’s Eve, OWS marched under a predictable banner. It promised a “New Year’s Revolution.” In reality, it is more of a devolution. At its height, Occupy was a few thousand leftists in a park. Now it is a few hundred leftists without a park and with a couple of faculties that really should be put to a more productive purpose. The occupiers can walk around in the desert for as long as they like, but they will never escape the mirage.

“My name is Vermin Supreme; I’m running [for] the president of America. I stand for mandatory toothbrushing laws,” he said, delivering his on-the-fly stump speech. “I’m a friendly fascist, a tyrant you can trust because I know what is best for you. I am on the ballot here in New Hampshire, and you can vote for me. I am Obama’s primary, primary, challenger. I am challenging him and Ron Paul to a debate and an arm-wrestling match, leg-wrestling match and a panty-wrestling match to decide it all, the presidency of the United States.”

Asked whether he plans to send troops back into Iraq, he said he wants to send troops “everywhere.”

“I propose we will invade and we will make that country a state,” he said. “So, Iraq would be our 51st state, Afghanistan would be [the] 52nd state, and on and on. Once we change these foreigners to Americans, they will certainly love America, and we’ll will be able to tax them, and it will be a wonderful unified United States of the Earth. Thank you.”

i always tell people that i think misconceptions about oakland saved me about 50 - 100 grand on the price of my house

Well, hell. I was reliably informed right here on this forum that any neighborhood in Oakland is 'one of the most crime-ridden neighborhoods in the United States'.

I did try to explain to him that the Rockridge HOA has taken out hits for less.

oh, right

perhaps i am wrong, since i am not a footbal fan, but my impression was that tim tebow was giving god credit for his success in football, and otherwise bringing religion into a sports competition. if this is true, i would find that distasteful

Tebow's public piety, from what I've heard, seems a bit over the top. Onion gags aside, he's hardly the first devout Christian to play football.

However, if he wants to pray on the field, nu, let him. What troubles me is that some of the sports commenters I overhear seem to be willing to entertain the idea that somehow his piety is giving him an edge in the game, and that disturbs me. It's frivolous, and silly, and whether they realize it or not, it's a bit of a slur on other players.

I see it as a slur on other believers. Those who believe in the power of prayer, pray.

To say that Tebow's NFL successes are in answer to his prayers insinuates that G-d cares more about football than He does about starving children.

Well, that's how this non-believer sees it any how.

No. Its reputation precedes it, but I've never been there.

I have been to Richmond's Iron Triangle at eleven thirty at night. Not doing that again, unless I'm accompanied by the SAS.

I also once had a (retrospectively) hilarious experience where I went for a job interview deeper into Seriously Fucking East Oakland than I had ever been. On public transit. I told the whole story to a friend not long ago, and at some point I said, "And all I can think is, if I can just get back to the Coliseum BART Station somehow, I'll be OK," and she says, "So what you're telling me is that you're somewhere where the Coliseum BART Station seemed like a beacon of safety? Where the hell WERE you?"

It's like that magical "other side of the tracks", except it's the other side of 101.

I got off the bus, and started walking toward where the interview was. And then I realized, I was going into a walled neighborhood, and it was eleven in the morning on a Wednesday, and there were grown men sitting on burned-out cars drinking.

So I retreated, and tried to go around. And then I thought I'd make sure I was going in the right direction, so I went up to a teenager at the bus stop, and asked him.

He jumped. He was looking at me as though he couldn't decide if I was actually there, or if he was hallucinating, and if it were actually safe to speak to me. He was polite though, and pointed the way. I looked, and decided that the only way I was going that way was if they had my grandma hostage at the end of it, so I crossed the street, and changed my objective to 'getting the hell out of here'.

I ASKED the people at the gas station to call me a cab, but I had to yell to be heard through the bulletproof glass, and then they wouldn't. They pointed me to a payphone outside. So I went outside and called for a cab. Things were going great until they asked where I was. I gave them the address. They said it would be twenty minutes, but I'm not THAT white and middle class. I realized that no one was coming.

Then a man offered me a lift. He was sixtyish and respectable looking, but I'd made it to the age I was then by generally not getting into vehicles with strangers, so I thanked him and said no.

Then the SuperShuttle came by for gas, and I offered the guy fifty bucks to take me to either airport. He said no, because I wasn't a pickup. I offered him fifty up front, and a hundred under the table. He said no.

Eventually, the bus I'd taken from the Coliseum came back, and I got on it. Same bus driver. "Is everything OK, honey?" she asked.

"I found what I was looking for," I said. Then I went home and called the guy at the job and told him that something else had come through for me, and I was so sorry I'd had to stand him up.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
“Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me.’

Well put. They might follow that up by remembering that the guy they claim to defend is not a hater and in fact Tim Tebow spends a great deal of his time and money helping poor people, many of whom are not white.

It's kind of rich for a blog that has as one of its leaders a man who posts videos that praise The Turner Diaries to claim to be defending such a man. But Tim Tebow is really only what Goddamnfrank called a "Maguffin": Tebow is just an excuse for them to hate on LGF. If they had no liberals to attack, I'd expect them to turn on Tebow and attack him for being a "socialist" or some such thing.

i got to know the matthew text fairly well when i was in a phase of studying the bible and reading up on jesus. it has a reputation as the most "jewish" of the gospels and has the best version of the sermon on the mount

what i did was to cut and paste into a file by itself all the places in matthew where it quotes jesus verbatim, and then to study that as, basically, a way to let jesus tell me what is he preaching, directly

naturally, a good jewish boy preaches a righteous jewish philosophy of moral and compassionate behavior
