Barth’s Notes: Andrew Breitbart Targets Charles Johnson in ‘Turner Diaries’ Smear

“An insult to the intelligence”
Wingnuts • Views: 26,281

British blogger Richard Bartholomew weighs in on Andrew Breitbart’s attempt to spread blatantly dishonest smears about your humble narrator:

Andrew Breitbart Targets Charles Johnson in Turner Diaries Smear.

Coming in for special mention: the Duo of Dimmitude, Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer.

This is an insult to the intelligence: Johnson’s Amazon store brings up any book which is available through Amazon – including Breitbart’s own literary endeavours. Also, Johnson has made it very clear that  he despises The Turner Diaries, so the implied suggestion that the book’s availability somehow reveals some sort of dark truth about him makes no sense.

Of course, this is just a minor incident in Breitbart’s stellar career as a smear-monger, although it’s worth noting as further evidence of why Breitbart is a ludicrous figure who ought to shunned by anyone who cares about honesty and decency in public life. Johnson seems to be a lightning rod for this kind of thing: I recently noted Robert Spencer’s claim that Johnson seeks to justify honour killings.

As is widely known, Breibart, Spencer, and Geller have a particular hatred for Johnson because he used to be a political ally. A few years ago, Little Green Footballs took the same sort of approach as can be found on Jihad Watch: the logo, I recall, was a terrified hippy jumping into the arms of a burka-clad woman at the sight of a green football, and the site hosted a good deal of crude anti-Muslim sentiment among the commentators. Johnson’s targets included the stupidity of Trutherism and elements on the anti-war left that were either pro-Islamist or complacent about the problem, but there was also much that I considered objectionable or unfair.

By his own account, Johnson “left … no, ran away from the right”, and he cites reasons such as the rise of the Christian right in the Republican Party and the willingness of elements of the “counter-jihad” crowd to work with unsavoury groups in Europe. While he sees “the right” as having become more excessive, it’s also apparent that he now has a greater respect for progressive discussion and activism.

Pamela Geller recently wrote to him on Twitter:

On your belly, rotten traitor. Everybody despises you – left and right

This is an irrelevant jibe – Johnson is running a blog on his own terms, not seeking a position in a political movement. From what I’ve seen of his site over the past couple of years, he writes in good faith, linking to interesting stories and calling things as he sees them. I don’t always agree with his analyses, but he doesn’t pander and he doesn’t seek to distort or manipulate. Whether he ought to be more self-critical about what his blog used to be like is a matter for him (although some former targets may want to press the point), but the blog is today a useful resource. That’s really all that matters.

Note that one of the obsessed stalkers showed up in Richard’s comments almost immediately after he tweeted the link, wanting to make sure they got credit for launching the smear; and don’t miss his lovely user icon.

Thank you Barth.

This is yet another indicator of the base caliber of Mr. Breitbart's personality and morality. That he chooses to defend and associate with these internet thugs, goons and miscreants is a clear indication of his debased nature.

Now we're not talking about any ordinary blogger when we speak of Mr. Breitbart. He is one of the de facto leaders of political movement in this country most notably the now infamous Tea Party. He appears in political rallies in opposition to many issues affecting our lives including his appearance in Madison, WI in opposition to the state union organizations there.

That the conservative movement has lowered itself to this shock jock and goonish level should not be surprising anymore. It began soon after Obama won the Democratic primary and has been present to this day. It has diminished to a certain extent but as we can see daily in our thread here at LGF the extremist nature of he and other like him are never ending.

They must be opposed by all good Americans including those that consider themselves true conservatives. The near criminal and gang like behavior of these thugs must not be tolerated.

The opposite. Barth's Notes routinely picks apart the claims of anti-Islam kooks and points out their shady connections...though that's just one group of many that the blog reports on and debunks. It gets massive hate and periodic threats from a variety of stalker/loon varieties.

29 What, me worry?  Tue, Jan 10, 2012 12:26:38pm

One thing that kinda of irritates me and I think should be mentioned more often, this blog didn't start off on the Right "back in the day." For years, it was centrist right and really more centrist than anything. The topic matters were mostly Middle East (and not just Israel, but Iran, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, etc.), but the commenters were from all over, right, left and middle. It wasn't until registration started in 2004 that it started leaning harder to the Right and eventually got more radicalized.

It also became more popular at that time when "weblogs" became the new trend. LGF was one of small handful of political blogs. The news outlets weren't even allowing comments on their site and people with personal websites had "guestbooks" not comment sections. So I think when people started to take note of LGF, it was when it had become fairly rightwing, but it was never that way from the beginning.

And then, to compound their dislike of him, he speaks too intelligently and (dare I say it) sanely for them to follow. They want a bomb thrower, who lives and dies by the soundbite, and he's just not it.

Pennsylvania GOP Gov. Corbett: If You Have $2,000 In Assets, You’re Too Rich For Food Stamps

Specifically, the Department of Public Welfare said that as of May 1, people under 60 with more than $2,000 in savings and other assets would no longer be eligible for food stamps. For people over 60, the limit would be $3,250.

Houses and retirement benefits would be exempt from being counted as assets. If a person owns a car, that vehicle also would also be exempt, but any additional vehicle worth more than $4,650 would be considered a countable asset.

Anne Bale, a spokeswoman for DPW, said the asset test was a way to ensure that “people with resources are not taking advantage of the food-stamp program,” funded by federal money.

In addition, Bale said, the test was related to DPW Secretary Gary Alexander’s initiative to reduce waste, fraud, and abuse across all department programs.

So means testing is being implemented in order to save money and reduce potential corruption and fraud in the use of Federal (and I presume state) funds.

Was there any additional data on how much this effort is going to cost the state in order to do all the checking? Or how much it will slow the processing of requests for assistance?

This is my issue with some of my gay friends who are currently dissing Obama which gets under my skin. I'm very vocal when they bring it up and hoping to get them to see straight. HA!

Obama has been by far THE most gay-rights-friendly president ever, even with this stand against marriage, which quite frankly, he's not standing so solid - kinda tippy toe. HAHA! But for realz, I think if you took him in a backroom, away from the cameras, iphones and paper and pencil, he'd tell you that he has no problem with gay marriage.

How The Feds Brought Down Arizona’s Suspected White Supremacist ‘Serial’ Bombing Brothers

In a small trailer park in Catoosa, Okla., in 2005, an aging white supremacist made a startling claim to a woman he had met only earlier that day.

He told her he was a serial bomber.

According to federal court records, Dennis Mahon, was thumbing through an album of old pictures for the woman, showing off his Ku Klux Klan robe and other artifacts of his life when he began to tick off a list of places he claimed to have bombed since the early 1980s.

There was an abortion clinic, a Jewish community center and offices of the IRS and immigration authorities. He told the woman he liked to use a mixture of ammonium nitrate and fuel oil. He said he added powdered sugar to the mix for an extra bang. He would set off the bombs at 2 a.m., he said, so that no one was hurt but a message was still sent.

What Mahon didn’t know was that the woman he was bragging to was an informant working for federal law enforcement. And the trailer she was staying in was rigged with hidden cameras and microphones to catch every word.

These folks at least seem to be playing it honest. The person I almost killed was Barbara Kingsolver. Yes, she feeds her family great, organic, natural food that they grow themselves. While working from home as a bestselling author. Oh, and it works really well because they live in West Virginia part of the year, and Arizona the rest, so they can have a garden producing year-round, but they're going to stop that soon, honest to God.

I was thinking about that whole split with the Right thing the other day.

It cost Charles in many ways. He lost traffic (and no doubt the revenue that came with it), he lost friends & allies (though he probably wasn't losing much, considering), and he gained the enmity of many who still stalk and try to smear him to this day. I wonder how many, if any, bothered to thank him for the years that he gave them a forum in which to communicate and a place where they learned about blogging?

That was an expensive decision he made, and I'm certain he knew full well what the price was going to be when he made it. How many of us would be willing to do the same in order to follow our conscience?

The haters are gonna hate, yes, but I think part of that hate is envy. Not envy of the blog—because they all have their own now—but envy of his resolve, of his willingness to stand alone, consequences be damned.

How do I know this? Because in most cases the haters probably started out just like everyone else: By the time they reached kindergarten they understood the Golden Rule and knew the difference between right & wrong, lying & truthfulness—in short, they knew what personal integrity was even if they didn't know the word. Charles was willing to sacrifice for his when it mattered—they were not.

If I really wanted to make heads explode, I'd even go so far as to say that Charles is a sort of shahid and this ongoing struggle to stand for justice, compassion, and tolerance is his personal jihad.*

*CL —> listens to the sound exploding heads and howls of furious derision. ;o) //

Oh, and it works really well because they live in West Virginia part of the year, and Arizona the rest, so they can have a garden producing year-round, but they're going to stop that soon, honest to God.

Up in the mountains, the howling of the wolves kept him awake. So they separated, but maintained a cordial relationship and were very attentive at the gatherings of the gods.

It was always one of the funniest bits of Norse legend, this little parable about a very important political couple resolving to work things through practically. Al-Azhar’s Sheik Ahmed el-Tayeb told reporters the bill of rights, which preserves freedoms of worship, opinion, scientific research and art and creative expression, is drafted to be a basis for the country’s new constitution, according to comments published by Egypt’s state news agency.
...
However, Abdel-Fattah, who was part of the discussion over the bill of Rights, criticized some wording in the document which appeared designed to also allay fear of conservative Islamists.

The document said freedom of the art must not “contradict religious sentiments and established social mores.”

Abdel-Fattah said such wording “are a source of weakness and undermine the principles of the document by subjecting art to censorship from religious leaders or even common people.” During Mubarak’s rule, Al-Azhar blacklisted a number of novels and other books because of what it considered violations of religion.

Have to be pragmatic about the whole thing. The rhetoric coming from the Republicans right now is far too heated and off base. Obama's on the case. He is, after all, the president. Something which they've forgotten. No one pressured Bush in this manner during his presidency.

We have to be pragmatic about it, accepting Iran's right to nuclear power while keeping a watchful eye on them. So far, Iran's level of secrecy is dismaying, but when you've been branded a member of the "Axis of Evil," it could just as well be seen as prudent not to leave things lying out in the open.

Santorum wants to impose 'Judeo-Christian Sharia'

Santorum could not be more unambiguous: His policy decisions will be based on "biblical truths," and as he noted, these "truths" will not change regardless of whether public opinion has evolved since the time the Bible was written thousands of years ago.

Imagine if either of the two Muslim members of Congress declared their support for a proposed American law based on verses from the Quran. The outcry would be deafening, especially from people like Santorum.

One of the great ironies is that Santorum has been a leader in sounding alarm bells that Muslims want to impose Islamic law -- called Sharia law -- upon non-Muslims in America. While Santorum fails to offer even a scintilla of credible evidence to support this claim, he continually warns about the "creeping" influence of Muslim law.

Santorum's fundamental problem with Sharia law is that it's "not just a religious code. It is also a governmental code. It happens to be both religious in nature and origin, but it is a civil code."

Consequently, under the Sharia system, the civil laws of the land must comport with God's law. Now, where did I hear about someone wanting to impose only laws that agree with God's law in America?

re: #119 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

The whole 20% enrichment bit is meant to scare easily-led, the folks who have no clue what uranium enrichment entails and are either too lazy or too busy to take a moment to Google or Wiki it. You just tell them "it's easier to weaponize it" (which the articles I've found pretty much do) and they get into a tizzy that "Iran's building nukes!"

I don't think there's much doubt that Iran would like to be a nuclear power, if only for the honor.

However, it's not quite as simple as getting a Tivo.

I read this site almost daily and find it to be intelligent, fair and balanced. I also enjoy the humour, science and random mental health breaks from the videos and music. All those that post comments here are great people as well. What I like most though is the LGF is a true force against extremism. This site lets me know that we live in a world where there is hope against the bad craziness out there.

OK. That's all I really want to say before I head back to work. Thanks all and keep it up.

Did you order both cookbooks? Inquiring minds want to know!

Note that one of the obsessed stalkers showed up in Richard’s comments almost immediately after he tweeted the link, wanting to make sure they got credit for launching the smear; and don’t miss his lovely user icon.

An Interplanetary GPS Using Pulsar Signals
Spacecraft could determine their position anywhere in the solar system to within five kilometres using signals from x-ray pulsars, say astronomers. Navigating in space is a tricky business. The usual method relies on Earth-based tracking stations to work out a spacecraft's distance using radio waves, a process that is accurate to within a metre or so. That's fine for the radial distance, but ...

4 Reasons ‘Raiders of the Lost Ark’ Is Secretly About Drugs
Nice, right? Anyway, here's my thesis: Raiders of the Lost Ark is not an action-adventure movie about an archaeologist who plays by his own rules and saves the day. Instead, the film is an exploration of Marion Ravenwood's crippling drug addiction. An addiction that was born from her unhealthy relationship and continued association with Indiana Jones. Is it true? Who cares. Can I prove ...

WAPO’s Glenn Kessler Gives Three “Pinocchios” To Claim of Doctored Emails
It has long been part of the Washington game for officials to discredit a news story by playing up errors in a relatively small part of it.
