Stephen Colbert: Malice in Blunderland

Mad as a hatter

So many fake outrages, so little time. I just realized I hadn’t yet covered the phony story that came out this week about the Obamas’ Halloween party for children of military families.

The main reason why I didn’t write about this one is that I honestly can’t even figure out why they’re outraged. Usually it’s related to a current GOP talking point of some kind, but this one seems to consist of nothing more than pure animus toward the President and his wife.

Right wing fake outrages are getting so weird, they’re not even close to making sense any more.

Inviting the Press Corps and posting videos of the party on the line back when it happened was all a part of the cover up.

I'm still pissed the Obamas didn't host an orgy for Saturnalia.

The right conveniently forgets that this was a party for military families. (Given by someone who “hates” the military).

Which, of course, only came to light when a disgruntled ex-employee revealed it in their thrilled tell-all book, which the Right will no doubt buy by the truckload to push it to the top of the Best Seller List.

Basically, we're all supposed to be shocked and outraged that Obama threw this big Halloween party and not making a big deal about it besides letting the press grab a few photos and then asking them to leave so that the parents and kids could enjoy the festivities in peace. Yet, had a big deal been made, we'd instead be hearing now about how Obama exploited these military families for a big photo op, running up the White House tab to get big name celebrities to round it out.

They never remember that it's for military families. Actually, the majority of things the Obama's do are for military families (their cause) but the outrage overpowers the cause.

Remember the Bush years when military was king and we all were traitors.

It just makes it more clear that it's party hatred. Reinforced by the RW media.

Xbox 360 workers reportedly threaten mass suicide

A dissident website is reporting that 300 employees at a plant in China that makes the Xbox 360 threatened earlier this month to commit mass suicide after being denied promised compensation.

The report in anti-government website China Jasmine Revolution (via Want China Times), claims that the protest took place Jan. 2 at a Foxconn plant in Wuhan, China. A tragedy was avoided after the town's mayor got involved and talked the workers out of their threat, the report said. (Another website, Record China, reports that the incident resulted in a plant shutdown.

In addition to Microsoft, Foxconn also builds iPhones, iPods, and MacBooks for Apple. Dell and Hewlett Packard have also sourced products from Foxconn.

I'm willing to bet money that the only reason Jeb Bush stayed out of the race was because his wife is Latino.

That, and the last name.

Newt jumps on O'Keefe's derp bus

“How can the Obama Justice Department call itself a Department of Justice when it will allow a system to continue that enables election fraud?” Gingrich said. “Voter ID is a measure we must have in all 50 states to make sure our elections don’t lose their integrity.”

The video, made by undercover film auteur James O’Keefe, was made available on Wednesday morning exclusively to TheDC.

Gingrich said reports of the dead coming to life to vote show the importance of voter ID requirements at polling places.

“If you can’t prove who you are, an imposter can vote for you, a non-citizen can vote for you and someone can watch the obituary pages and go vote for all our deceased citizens,” Gingrich told TheDC.

Yes Newt, a shadowy cabal is going to monitor every obituary in the US so they can coordinate the tens of thousands of people needed to swing enough dead votes to turn a national election, all without anyone breaking the silence and exposing it.

Yes. Because that child was completely ignored the entire time it was crying. Oh wait.

An infant’s cries rang through the Occupy DC encampment in McPherson Square Wednesday morning, and when a group went to investigate they found only a baby girl alone in a tent, wearing a onesie and mittens.

Soon after, authorities said, a man had been arrested and the girl — who was unharmed — was in the city’s care.

The campers notified authorities and then cared for the girl until help arrived, according to Kelly Canavan, 36, a retired Prince George’s County school teacher who has been living at the camp.

Damn those heartless OWS hippies for calling the police and making sure the baby was safe until help arrived. What diabolical thing will they do next?

Basically, Apple and Adobe are having a snit. Apple says it won't have its products use Flash because it's buggy, attracts malware and viruses, and has no quality standard. Adobe declares that the reason Apple won't use Flash is because it's a totalitarian dictatorship that demands total control over what is and isn't played on its devices and is pushing HTML5 as a means of breaking Flash's dominance.

Stupid parents are stupid.

"...Nebraska found itself facing an epidemic of abandoned children after the legislature passed a law in July that allowed parents to leave their children at a safe place, like a hospital, without fear of prosecution. It was one of the last states in the country to pass such legislation — but the law contained a large loophole by including children of all ages. The legislature gathered on Friday in a special session to fix the safe-haven law. The day before, three more kids were abandoned at Omaha hospitals, bringing the total to 34 since mid-September, shortly after the law was passed."

Ice stops progress of Alaska fuel convoy

The Coast Guard icebreaker and Russian fuel tanker trying to resupply icebound Nome, Alaska, made no progress on Tuesday, a Coast Guard spokesperson said early Wednesday.

Petty Officer 1st Class Sara Francis confirmed an online report from Alaska Dispatch that the Russian-flagged fuel tanker, the Renda, only advanced about 50 feet on Tuesday. That was in stark contrast to what the Renda and the icebreaker, the Coast Guard cutter Healy, did on Monday, when they battled through 50 miles of the ice-covered Bering Sea.

The ships are about 100 miles from Nome, a town of 3,600 on Alaska's western coast.

“Tough sledding. Healy is trying to free Renda right now from an ice ridge,” Carter Whalen, president of Alaska Marine Pilots, told Alaska Dispatch in an email. The pilot aboard the Renda, Pete Garay, confirmed the situation.

The two-ship convoy carrying 1.3 million gallons of fuel had hoped to make it to Nome by late Thursday or early Friday, but that was before Tuesday's standstill.

The Sitnasuak Native Corp. of Nome contracted the Renda to deliver the fuel after ice formed over the Bering Sea in the wake of a ferocious November storm that prevented the last delivery of the season via barge.

It is the first attempt to supply fuel to an Arctic Alaska settlement through sea ice.

Nome is in no immediate danger of running out of fuel, Coast Guard Capt. Craig Lloyd, who is coordinating the mission, said earlier. The town has enough fuel to last until about March, but the delivery was attempted now because it would have been even more difficult then, he said.

Oh, don't kid yourself; it's pretty obvious the only reason he brought this up was because it happened at an Occupy event. Something that happens every day all around the world, from the abandonment to Good Samaritans stepping in, getting the authorities involved, and making sure the child was OK until the authorities arrived; OWS has nothing to do with the countless times this scenario plays out across the world, just stupid or scared parents.

Direct HTML support for video, drawing, animation, and audio is one of the benefits, meaning developers don't have to use 3rd party tools like Flash requiring a plug-in and bogging the browser down. Which benefits us by having a snappier browser and more open development.

Ha! somehow he's going to be on the wire to respond to Bain. Maybe he will blow it.

The Bain thing has major legs. Twice today, it has come up in conversation with neighbors when I've been out walking the pooches. The response is one of disgust with Romney. Also, in both conversations came up his "I like to fire people who provide service to me" thing. He is clearly not at all likable to those who would otherwise want to vote for him.

more, yet

The war between the Gingrich and Romney camps is escalating over the former speaker’s threats to sue TV stations that continue to air attack ads by a Romney super PAC claiming that he was "fined" $300,000 for ethics violations.

In a letter sent to TV stations in Florida and South Carolina, Stefan Passantino, national counsel to the Gingrich presidential campaign, wrote that the ads asserting that Gingrich was "fined" for violating House ethics rules are "NOT TRUE" and represent "a defamatory communication which exposes this station to potential civil liability.

"In turn, we do hereby DEMAND that your station immediately REFUSE, and if started, CEASE airing any such advertisements," continues the letter, which is dated Jan. 6. Passantino added in an email Wednesday to NBC News: “With this letter, Newt Gingrich has put Mitt Romney’s SuperPAC on notice that the free ride they have enjoyed to misstate Newt’s record are over. Discussing true facts concerning one’s record are fine, using SuperPAC funds to mislead voters will no longer be tolerated.”

Puritopian

A Puritopian is a self-described liberal or progressive whose political orientation is to be angry, dissatisfied and unhappy with the state of the nation, because in their view, liberal policies are not being implemented quickly or forcefully enough. They have particular contempt for Democratic presidents.

They are ideological purists who disdain compromise and incremental change, which they see as "selling out" liberal ideas like full employment, an end to war, and liberal social policy. Their views can often sound like utopian fantasy where opposing views never exist.

Puritopians dislike Republicans but reserve their greatest disdain for Democratic presidents, whom they relentlessly attack for not meeting a set of ideological goal posts that are constantly adjusted to ensure that the president will be deemed a disappointment, "not progressive enough" or "just like a Republican" no matter what policy achievements are made.

Puritopians routinely dismiss or ignore congress' role in making or impeding policy, believing presidents can simply "use the bully pulpit" in order to overcome constitutional or legislative obstacles.

Puritopians have a strong affinity for third party politics as a way to punish Democratic presidents. They are especially hostile to President Barack Obama and deem anyone who expresses a lack of ill will toward him to be "Obamabots" and enemies of liberalism.

How cute, O'Keefe thinks he's a journalist

It’s just another kind of hard-hitting investigative journalism, insists conservative video activist James O’Keefe, who is now facing a state investigation.

“There is definitely a double standard against citizen journalists,” said O’Keefe. His undercover stings embarrassed ACORN in 2009, when he posed as a pimp seeking criminal advice from the left-leaning community service organization — and prompted high-level resignations at NPR, after an O’Keefe team posing as Muslim donors taped an executive calling Tea Party conservatives “seriously racist, racist people.”

“I notice a contempt and a hostility from the media establishment towards us,” O’Keefe told the Herald yesterday. “The journalism establishment is not very friendly to me or to our work product, when they’ve been using these tactics for decades.”

How cute, O'Keefe thinks he's a journalist

Newspapers and non-FNC TV news-stations aren't hostile to James O'Keefe because he's an "internet journalist", they're hostile to him because he's a criminal and a liar.

I do hope that the current investigation results in charges being brought against him. He needs some jail time to sort hm out.

294 Lidane  Wed, Jan 11, 2012 9:48:38pm

This sucks. 120 years of history gone in the blink of an eye:

Small town bottler out of the Dr Pepper business

It's the end of an era for the Dr Pepper that so many of us love — the soft drink that's sweetened with real cane sugar and manufactured in a small-town Texas bottling plant.

Soft drinks are a cutthroat business. Coke and Pepsi have been fighting for years. Now comes Dr Pepper.

The story line: If you can't beat 'em, buy 'em. And one-third of the workers in a small business will lose their jobs as a result.

Dublin's Dr Pepper was made with pure cane sugar (instead of beet sugar or corn syrup) in the world's oldest Dr Pepper bottling plant located 75 miles southwest of Fort Worth. It has a devoted following.

Fans have been ordering cane sugar Dr Pepper over the Internet from a family-owned Dr Pepper bottler in Dublin.

But Plano-based Dr Pepper Snapple Group (DPS), which owns the brand for most of the country, took legal action because the plant was only authorized to distribute its product in a six-county territory.

:(

Apparently, the Dublin plant gave up its bottling rights to Dr. Pepper/Snapple Group brands in exchange for not being put completely out of business under the weight of corporate lawsuits. They're supposedly still bottling other brands and selling nostalgic beverage stuff, just not DPSG ones, as Dublin Bottling Works.

I live in Nashville, but I have half-a-mind to shoot DPSG off a letter, but then again, as the holders of the trademarks and formulas, DPSG is unfortunately within their rights, as shitty as they have gone about it.

That said, Coke and Pepsi (especially Coke, IMO) can be even more ruthless in dealing with their bottlers.

I sent DPSG this through their web contact form; not like they'll give two shits about me, but it made me feel better:

In regards to the Dublin Dr. Pepper "settlement", which sees them giving up their Dr. Pepper bottling rights in exchange for DPSG not driving them completely out of business under the weights of lawsuits, I think it's a travesty what your company has done this to one of your oldest bottlers. A bottler that used word-of-mouth and the Internet to sell a version of Dr. Pepper your company had given up on in the rest of the US for decades in favor of a formula sweetened by HFCS. Your "throwback" version may be technically the same as the Dublin version, in that it's also sweetened with cane sugar, but it isn't and will never be.

Don't bother replying back to this if an actual human isn't writing it, because robo-replies will be swiftly discarded.

On the subject of real sugar-sweetened drinks, I love me some Mexican Coke with real sugar in real glass bottles; however, you have to be careful, because some Mexican bottlers also use HFCS, so a look at the label is a must.

Turkey has had a Hyper-Nationalism problem since the end of the Ottoman Empire. And was very much present in the very final days (1890's-1910's) of the Ottoman Empire. I don't refer to the Armenian Genocide as such but call it The Proto-Holocaust. Because a) Lots of other groups were getting mangled at the same time and b) Hitler directly referred to the fate of the Armenians in talking about the Jewish Population of Europe.

Nothing thus far has solved it.

Though, with Northern Cyprus, I lean Turkish. The Greeks attempted to force their will on the minority Turks. It backfired.

Not only that, but Greece aided and abetted Serbia during the Bosnian Genocide, including at Srebrenica, and betrayed NATO. Both then, and in the Kosovo War 4 years later. What is happening to Greece and its people now is well deserved karma for the 90's.

Not so much karma as the results of not changing behavior when the situation changed: when they had a nation a currency, they could always print their way out of debt and deflate the currency.

After they joined the euro, they lost that option but still behaved as if they could just print their way out of debt. Now they can't, they need to be bailed out but are annoyed that their creditors are attaching terms and conditions to the bailout.

Considering they were acting in the same way the collaborationists did in WWII with Hitler, that will be a very long time. Greece not only didn't do anything, they also actively helped the murderers, impeded NATO actions, and even informed Serbia of NATO actions when possible. There was no nation in WWII that acted in this manner.

Not only that, but during the Kosovo intervention, the Greeks did a nice little Anti-US riot. And they still hate us for the defense we did of the Bosnians and Albanians.

[Link: www.huffingtonpost.com...]

[Link: obamafoodorama.blogspot.com...]

And, most tellingly:

[Link: blogs.reuters.com...]

The scene was worthy of a Hollywood extravaganza. Bubble machines blanketed the North Portico, the ceremonial entrance to the White House. Pumpkins, some carved and candle lighted, lined the marble steps. Behind Obama stood a white-helmeted storm trooper character from “Star Wars,” along with the film’s Chewbacca, the hairy, apelike “wookie.”

Entertainers from the Chicago-based Redmoon Theater and other companies wove their own thrills and chills for those in line. A brass band clad in skeleton suits belted out a free jazz-style funeral stomp. Outsized figures on stilts simulated moving trees. Women in butterfly suits maneuvered inflatable, 10-foot (3-meter) snow-globe-like spheres on the White House lawn.

To heighten the Halloween effect, the White House was flood-lit through orange filters. Giant pumpkins weighing as much as 1,000 pounds (450-kg) dotted the 18-acre (7-hectare) grounds. And the big, black spider hung hauntingly between the tall white columns framing the front door.

After handing out the treats, the president welcomed the children of military families chosen by the armed services along with the kids of White House staff in the East Room.

So the big conspiracy is that Obama covered up that families of military children got to meet Johnny Depp? Because obviously they weren't hiding that they were making a big deal out of the holiday, and spending money on it.

Anonymous targets Israel by publishing SCADA log-in details

SCADA, or supervisory control and data acquisition systems are a vital part of the industrial control systems found in manufacturing, power generation and other facilities. They were targeted famously by the Stuxnet worm which is alleged to have been created by Israel and the US in a bid to disrupt Iran's nuclear programme.

"Today is #fuckisrael day. Let us all take one moment of our day to showcase our [sic] damaging to human rights the Govt. of Israel really is," noted the first.

It's strange. When Anon started messing with banks and Paypal I thought the Feds would surely start to crack down on Anon. Since then they've attempted attacks on stock exchanges, power plants and utilities. Still no major arrests. I wonder what's going on.

I trust (hope) that there is an FBI team gathering everything they can and then take down the entire "organization" in one fell swoop.

Lets say they knew who/ where one or two of them are. If they (the FBI) moved in now all the others (Anon) would burrow in deeper

I would think the Feds are interested. Even the attacks on banks and credit card fraud alone are enough to attract the attention of the Feds. The investigations might be more complicated because of the technology. I have no idea what warrants are needed to monitor an IP address or whatever. Maybe Anon is clever enough to cover its tracks but I sort of doubt it. I would suspect Anon is probably pretty infiltrated by the Feds. I would have thought there'd be a crackdown by now but I don't really know how this stuff works.

Katy Perry’s Dad Apologizes for Anti-Semitic Comments During Sermon

Katy Perry’s preacher father has issued a public apology for an anti-Semitic rant he made last week while preaching at an Ohio church.

According to multiple reports, Reverend Keith Hudson, an evangelical minister, drew ire from the Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) and the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) when he told the congregation of the Church on the Rise in Westlake, Ohio:

“You know how to make the Jew jealous? Have some money, honey. You go to L.A. and they own all the Rolex and diamond places. Walk down a part of L.A. where they live and it is so rich it smells. You ever smell rich? They are all Jews, hallelujah! Amen.”

Or they're busy investigating the matter but don't want to make announcements until they've rolled up a bunch of them (probably coordinating with multiple countries since some may be overseas from the US). Why tip 'em off when you don't need to. Some of these attack have to have left markers about how they were conducted and other identifying information that can be used to track the culprits back to their sources. It takes time to trace.

I thought that was great, too, and decided to find the context. I ended up on a page with a whole bunch of Reagan quotes. As I was reading through them, that particular quote didn't seem to mesh with all the other shit I was reading. This is what that site says is the whole quote:

"We establish no religion in this country, nor will we ever. We command no worship. We mandate no belief. But we poison our society when we remove its theological underpinnings. We court corruption when we leave it bereft of belief. All are free to believe or not believe; all are free to practice a faith or not. But those who believe must be free to speak of and act on their belief, to apply moral teaching to public questions. (President RONALD WILSON REAGAN)

Things are getting really strange and there doesn't seem to be any real vocal concern by US government officials.

An exception:
Inouye: Attack On Israel An Attack On U.S.

Visiting Israel this week, U.S. Sen. Dan Inouye is warning that, should Iran attack that nation, “our position is that if you attack Israel, you are attacking the United States.”

Excerpt:

Inouye, introduced to the (high school) students by former AIPAC president Robert Asher as the best friend Israel has in Congress, said he discussed the Iranian threat in a meeting earlier in the day with Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu.

The loose-knit Anonymous movement, who stole thousands of credit card numbers from U.S. security firm Stratfor, has now published the email addresses of more than 860,000 of its clients.

Hackers released the data – which included information on former U.S. Vice President Dan Quayle and former Secretary of State Henry Kissinger – online.

A blanket prohibition is a pretty silly way to go about doing that. It's very close to collective punishment. The citizenship isn't granted automatically, so they could still review each case. I don't see what they gain by saying it's not available for any Palestinian married to an Israeli, no matter what.

If the attacks and scrutiny of Mitt Romney’s Bain record have produced one positive for the former Massachusetts governor, it’s that some conservatives -- including those who haven’t been pulling for his campaign -- have started to rally to his defense. There’s Rush Limbaugh and the conservative Club for Growth. Rival Rick Santorum, who has thrown plenty of punches at Romney’s way, has defended Bain. Ditto Jon Huntsman, who yesterday said: “If you have creative destruction in capitalism, which has always been part of capitalism, it becomes a little disingenuous to take on Bain Capital.”

because everybody knows capitalism means destroying people's lives so ricj people can make more money! it's the American Way!

re: #554 albusteve

This is quite a propaganda coup for the Iranian regime. And they are already reaping their rewards through a largely compliant media. It is my contention that the Iranian government murdered Mostafa Ahmadi Roshan to attain these goals. The Revolutionary Guard Corps Guard speaks:

A much stronger call for retribution came Thursday from one Iranian newspaper in particular, Kayhan, a mouthpiece for the country’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and for the Revolutionary Guard Corps.

“We should retaliate against Israel for martyring of our young scientist,” Kayhan’s editor-in-chief, Hossein Shariatmadari, who was appointed by the ayatollah, said in an editorial. Referring to the Israelis, he wrote: “These corrupted people are easily identifiable and readily within our reach.”

The Kayhan editorial, as translated by Agence-France Presse and other Western news services, also said: “The Islamic Republic has gathered much experience in 32 years, thus assassinations of Israeli officials and military members are achievable.”

Another hardline daily, Resalat, said, “The only way to finish with the enemy’s futile actions is retaliation for the assassination of Iran’s scientist.”

I have a problem with the "against their will" part. He chose his career path by obtaining an education in that field. But as you know, if you know, he's not the first in that career field to be a target for assassination.

559 lawhawk  Thu, Jan 12, 2012 10:56:17am

Israeli citizenship has what appears to be a 3-tier track.

Jews are entitled to automatic and immediate citizenship under the Law of Return. Foreigners can obtain citizenship through a naturalization process, which requires residency and takes place over a 4-year period. Palestinians, in the territories, and other prescribed countries are prohibited from citizenship.

Adalah, which brought suit against the law, claims that the third, the lowest track, is for the spouses of Palestinian Arabs citizens of Israel from the OPT, Syria, Lebanon, Iran, and Iraq. claims that these 3-tracks which is based essentially on the nationality of the applicant, constitutes racial discrimination, and contradicts the principle of equality and prior decisions of the Supreme Court.

Undermining that particular argument is that Palestinian Arabs in Egypt aren't subject to the 3d tier; nor are Jordanian so it isn't a racial discrimination. Nationality is distinct from race.

That said, the existing 2d tier naturalization process should have been sufficient for security purposes and a 3d tier shouldn't have been necessary if sufficient safeguards were in place (background checks, etc.).

Because it seems to be working for them. This is feeding the pigs at the trough of US and Israeli hatred around the world. No one, or barely anyone, is asking the question, "did the Iranians do this?" Instead I am seeing the repeated rhetoric being leveled against both the USA and most particularly Israel. If anyone on our side were to assassinate an Iranian nuclear scientist why choose one that had a relatively low position in the Iranian nuclear enrichment production sector?

I don't know what all the outrage of the outrage is all about? In the original article, all of this information about an afternoon Halloween party with the children is present.

If you are going to be a shill for the Obama's, fine, I will agree to disagree.

See, this is what I mean. You point out that this fake outrage is pure nonsense, and right wingers respond by simply repeating it, as if everyone is supposed to just understand why they're so upset. They can't actually articulate the reason -- because it's not based on reason. It's pure antipathy.

Citizenship applications should be decided on a case by case basis, with the option to reject someone who is quite admittedly hostile, but accept someone who in good faith would be a good citizen.

Agreed. Blanket ban is a terrible idea.

When I heard about this event, my first thought was that it was pretty cool that Johnny Depp dressed up in character to entertain military families and didn't publicize the event or his involvement.

I actually saw a study that said the kid who does the best in life is the one that is not in a group, but has friends in all the groups.

Until they all decide at once that you are collectively a traitor to them all. At which point twenty kids are chasing after you rather than 7-8 with some chance of finding refuge with a different group.

Been there. Done that. Comes from refusing to be blindly loyal to a hierarchy.

Every country in the world is allowed to set its own standards for obtaining citizenship. Israel does not have the same laws as the U.S.

That's a better argument than the MBF-ish comment made earlier in the thread.

re: #559 lawhawk

It's a specific tussle having to do with citizenship and disputed territory. Doubtful that this is a good way to approach it.

This is, honestly, one of those situations that's always a bit tricky for me, since it's a specific area or policy in which I disagree with how the Israeli courts have tackled a specific issue. But it is very hard for me to look at this, and not note the actual context of the region, ie, as Alouette points out, the inadequate response of every nation in the region to the Palestinian refugee crisis, now into its sixth decade.

Lebanon, Jordan, Syria and Egypt all have Palestinian refugee communities, none of them granted citizenship or full civil rights. (And those who have those can lose them, as a number of former Jordanian citizens have found out.) Israel, on the other hand, has Arab Israeli citizens.

Meanwhile, Jordan's ceded their claim to West Bank to the PLO, and manages to excuse themselves from any responsibility for a large and controversial chunk of disputed territory that they considered theirs for quite some time.

So it's easy for me to critize Israel's stance on this, but it's hard for me to do so without some tension, because of the degree of criticism aimed solely at Israel in, shall we say, many, many conversations I've had about the region.

Contrary to popular belief Medea Benjamin is still an asshole.

Did anyone believe otherwise?
