Santorum Calls Romney ‘Just a Paler Shade of What We Have’
The candidate, according to The Caucus,
urged voters to dismiss the conventional wisdom that Mitt Romney has an upper hand in the nominating contest. He said the party can win back the White House only by offering a “clear contrast” with President Obama. “We need contrasts,” Mr. Santorum said, “not just a paler shade of what we have.”
Fer real. The good thing is Santorum has not chance. The bad thing is that this is what we deal with.

Just to share some good news with my friends here, my short sci fi film treatment is now registered with the Writers Guild. So I can get on with raising some cash and studio resources and discuss the storyline openly. I may wear out my shutter on the 7D with all the time lapse I plan on. Heh, shooting in 3.6k makes for some really crisp sequences.

Got my new Motorola Droid 3 today…not that I normally care about gadgets, but the office pays for it, I was able to sync my Google settings (so I don’t need my old android anymore), and I was able to download Touchdown (a MS Exchange app) to set up my corporate email—and they found my license key from a few years ago so I’m fully registered. That feels pretty fuckin’ good…oh, and the important thing…got facebook and “Words with Friends” installed.

North Korea Reportedly Punishing Insincere Mourners
North Korean authorities are punishing mourners who failed to exhibit sincere sadness and despair after the death of Kim Jong Il on Dec. 17, the Daily NK reported Wednesday.
The online North Korean newspaper, which is published by opponents of the governing regime, said a source in North Hamkyung Province revealed the information. The source told the paper “authorities are handing down at least six months in a labor-training camp to anybody who didn’t participate in the organized gatherings during the mourning period, or who did participate but didn’t cry and didn’t seem genuine,” according to the Daily NK.

Yeah, I considered that, but I’d still have to sell more stuff to afford a working one. I could dump cash on a new one, but the last time I did that (early ’90s for a new car stereo) I ended up eating nothing but egg noodles and corned beef hash for a month. Fuck that.

I understand, my own game budget is basically non-existant. So that’s why I wanted to suggest what we did. I don’t know what the specs on Xboxen are like but could you buy a cheap barebones model from the Pawn shop and then stick ram, disk & etc from your dying one into it to hold down the replacement costs?

The French are very careful to try to preserve their language. They really do not like it when Anglais makes its way into the language.
There is an institution in France, L’Academie Francaise, which tries to prevent English from creeping into the language. They do other things, too, but this is one of the things they look at.
Conservatism
As French culture has come under increasing pressure with the widespread use of English in media and technology, the Académie has tried to prevent the Anglicization of the French language. For example, the Académie has recommended, with mixed success, that some loanwords from English (such as walkman, software and email) be avoided, in favour of words derived from French (baladeur, logiciel, and courriel respectively). Moreover, the Académie has worked to modernize French orthography. The body, however, has sometimes been criticized for behaving in an excessively conservative fashion.

Of course, we have our own organization in La. to try to preserve French spoken here: CODOFIL.
The Council for the Development of French in Louisiana was created in 1968 by the Louisiana state legislature. According to Legislative Act No. 409, the Governor of Louisiana is “…authorized to establish the Council for the Development of Louisiana- French, said agency to consist of no more than fifty (50) members and including a chairman…”. CODOFIL is furthermore empowered to “do any and all things necessary to accomplish the development, utilization, and preservation of the French language as found in Louisiana for the cultural, economic and touristic benefit of the state. The name was subsequently changed to the Council for the Development of French in Louisiana.”

Quebec too; I was just reading about Loi 101, which has this interesting exception to the general requirement for the use of French language:
I’ve got a funny story told to me by a Cajun friend who taught French for awhile at LSU.
Being interested in French, he and some other teachers took a study trip to Canada. They got a lot of ribbing about the Anglicization of Cajun French, particularly for the phrase “passer du bon temps” (to pass a good time) - which the Canadians felt was English-oriented. The Canadian phrase? “Avoir fun”. LOL.

More seriously, a quick look at the last 1200 or so years or English/French history will remind one that 1) the current friendship hasn’t lasted long & 2) we only are free because it was the French had loved giving the English heartache for 1000 years.

Well yeah - except again, they don’t seem to have concerns about languages other than English poisoning the French. L’Academie has mixed results with their efforts - most folks are just going to use whatever is easiest to say. And there are French dialects all over the place which would never meet the standards of L’Academie.

The real winner of the American Revolution?
François Joseph Paul de Grasse. Admiral of the French fleet at Yorktown.
But he is not celebrated, even in France. Mostly because his defeat of the indecisive Rear Admiral Thomas Graves also served to have the British send the ferocious Admiral Rodney to sea to deal with him. Less than a year after de Grasse’s victory at the Battle of the Chesapeake Capes, his fleet fought the Royal Navy under Rodney at the Battle of the Saintes in the Caribbean. Rodney, unlike Graves, formed no line of battle and sent his ships charging in before the French fleet could fully alight itself. Rodney’s doing what Graves refused to do won the UK a smashing victory. As the peace treaty ending the Revolutionary War had not been signed, this allowed the UK to say it had won the last major battle of the war.

At Macdonald’s it’s just a “nugget.”
Last time I ate “McDonald’s”? I was starving and on short time getting back to work. Late 90’s.
Now, when I say I’m starving… I have blood sugar issues, and am now two hours from becoming a cannibal.
I got back to work with a stash of McNuggets, half chewed the first one and spit it out. I’d rather risk the offense of cannibalism than eat that garbage.

True enough.
But tell me, what’s better? To win the battle that matters or loose the one that’s irrelevant?
The crippling of de Grasse’s fleet wasn’t irrelevant, though. France still wanted to seize some of the UK’s Caribbean possessions, and had de Grasse won they might well have done so. Rodney’s victory did not prevent American independence, but it did avoid further British loss of territory and it restored the Royal Navy’s pride after Yorktown.
Moreover, de Grasse beat Graves at the Chesapeake Capes, but most of Graves’ ships withdrew still flying the Union Jack. The Saintes saw most of de Grasse’s ships sunk or captured. So the battle de Grasse lost was a real wound to France, though it did not hurt America.

Speaking of which: this is cool:
Community Supported Agriculture
…a farmer offers a certain number of “shares” to the public. Typically the share consists of a box of vegetables, but other farm products may be included. Interested consumers purchase a share (aka a “membership” or a “subscription”) and in return receive a box (bag, basket) of seasonal produce each week throughout the farming season.
You can search your zip code for participating farms.

Getting here late again, as usual.
I’m seriously put out with the wingnut reaction to the video of Marines apparently pissing on dead Taliban. It might be one thing to suggest that leftists and peaceniks are overreacting, something else again to revel in this barbarism and praise these nitwits for their failure of discipline and character.
I was talking to an acquaintance about it this afternoon. He said, “Well, I can’t judge them. Hell, if I were in their shoes, I might do it too.”
That really hit a nerve. I said, “I HAVE been in their shoes, I didn’t do anything remotely like this, and I think they should be thrown in the brig.”
The conversation was over at that point.
I was also struck by the relatively muted reaction so from the Taliban. Part of the reason might be that they don’t grasp the outrage: This would be pretty mild stuff to them. The desecration of enemy bodies is completely routine with them, and it gets far, far uglier than what we saw in the video. Beyond that, it is their standard and stridently repeated narrative that foreign troops engage in all sorts of atrocities and misconduct. An unusual outburst of rage over this incident would tend to undermine the credibility of that narrative.

I think it does rise to the BCD level because of the additional danger it presents to other members of the service and to the mission itself.

BCD= Bad Conduct Discharge.
Unlike an administrative discharge, a Bad Conduct Discharge (BCD) is a punitive discharge that can only be given by a court-martial (either Special or General) as punishment to an enlisted service-member. Bad conduct discharges are often preceded by a period of confinement in a military prison. The discharge itself is not executed until completion of both confinement and the appellate review process.
Virtually all veterans’ benefits are forfeited by a Bad Conduct Discharge; BCD recipients are eligible for VA disability compensation, as the only discharge that forfeits all VA benefits in full is the Dishonorable Discharge.

BTW, I see PaleoPat has a new column out, featured at Townhall, in which he adulates Ron Paul:
[Praise for Paul’s doomer goldbug outlook…]
Aware it is unlikely he will ever be president, the 76-year-old soldiers on in the belief that this cause will one day triumph in a party where he was, not long ago, seen as an odd duck, but a party where today he speaks for a national constituency.
[…]
There is a gnawing fear in the GOP that Paul will quit the party when the primaries are over and run as a third-party candidate on the Libertarian or some other line in the November election.
Not going to happen. Such a decision would sunder the movement Paul has pulled together, bring about his own and his party’s certain defeat in November, and re-elect Barack Obama.
Paul would become a pariah in his party, while his son, Sen. Rand Paul, who would be forced to endorse his father over the GOP nominee, would be ruined as a future Republican leader.
Why would Dr. Paul do this, when the future inside the GOP looks bright not only for him but for his son?
[…]
That’s right, PaleoPat sees Ron Paul (and his son) as the future of the GOP.

Arby’s roast beef sandwich or GTFO.
We had a “Raff’s” in Portland, Maine — owned and operated by the brothers who founded Arby’s. The story was that after they sold out they weren’t allowed to have a “roast beef” franchise, so Raff’s sold roast beef and fish and burgers. While “Arby’s” meant “America’s Roast Beef, Yes Sir,” the take was that it really meant “Raff Brothers.
Never caught on, however. Drove by the site the other day; it had been rubble-ized.
Woe.

Speaking as a native New Englander who understands that the Patriots have pretty much surpassed Dallas as “THE team you hate,” it would be nice to see them actually win a playoff game. They’re 0-3 in their last three, with losses to both the Ravens and the Jets — at home.

That’s one I can actually do…
You sear the sides and edges first, by holding each side on a hothothot cast-iron piece of cookware, to seal in the melting interior fat. Then simmer it on low, all day, in your properly-spiced liquid mixture. Keep adding water. (If I sounded for a minute like I know something of fine cooking, don’t be fooled. My “properly spiced liquid mixture” includes lipton onion soup mix and a bunch of ketchup)

I’m trying it in an crappy offset smoker. I just haven’t wanted to spend 14 hours tending it every 15 minutes to come out with another failure. Pork is easy, forgiving and only takes 5 hours for ribs and 12 for shoulder.

I briefly dated a girl in college who had been a dancer with the Bolshoi. Freaking amazing what she could make her body do, effortlessly. She was the most incredible athlete I ever met in my life. I never once saw her physically tired. She’d go out for a five mile run and come back just a little pumped up. And anything physical came easy to her. She learned how to deal from the bottom of the deck when I showed her within like five minutes and then dealt me nothing but garbage the next poker game we played in together.
Tough as nails.

Today AT&T will cut off my Elite DSL service. On Friday.
Of course they will only then schedule the guy to come out add a box to my phone line next week. That way by Monday (or??) I’ll be back up and running on Uverse at 12mbps. I guess getting one guy to do both at the same time was too much for the “Your World Delivered” mega corp. I do hope to talk them into something for me for service in the meantime.

I used a typewriter! IBM Selectric. It couldn’t do any fancy shmancy stuff like kerned fonts or superscript. If you wanted to do superscript you had to manually turn the platen a half-return, and it didn’t diminish the size of the type. There was also only one type face, unless you used those little golf-ball font caps which were super expensive.

* - Downside of well-established untended hardwood area and that it has very well-established poison ivy with it. 3” think vines running up and down the tree trunks.
Traditional options are a bolt action. I like .257 Roberts for an all around cartridge that’s an excellent varmint cartridge that can still be used for deer or hogs. Another good all around rifle would be a lever action in .30-30. Last but not least is the modern option - a good quality AR type rifle in the classic .223. Smith & Wesson makes a nice one.
I tend to be a fudd & prefer the older types to the AR’s I carried in the Army but there are people that like them.

You can go two ways with this. My dad has a semi-automatic .22 Long Rifle for small critters like rabbits. Larger pests, he rocks the .30-06 (okay, maybe just a tad bit of overkill) in a bolt-action rifle. It more depends on how many animals he’s anticipating having to shoot at once (larger numbers favor a faster action) and picking the right cartridge for range and size of animal.

.22 long rifle…doesn’t make lots of noise and the coyotes can run off and die in someone else’s yard, so you don’t have to dispose of them. Coyotes are smart…once they get the message they stay away.

Don’t know if it has previously been linked.
An interesting counterpoint to Romney’s rhetoric:
Mitt Romney no stranger to tax breaks, subsidies
Bain Capital profited from a steel company that got them, and he used them to attract business when he governed MassachusettsReporting from Washington—
As Mitt Romney defends his record running a private equity firm, he frequently points to a fast-growing Indiana steel company, financed in part by Bain Capital, that now employs 6,000 workers. What Romney doesn’t mention is that Steel Dynamics also received generous tax breaks and other subsidies provided by the state of Indiana and the residents of DeKalb County, where the company’s first mill was built.
The story of Bain and Steel Dynamics illustrates how Romney, during his business career, made avid use of public-private partnerships, something that many conservatives consider to be “corporate welfare.” It is a commitment that carried over into his term as governor of Massachusetts, when he offered similar incentives to lure businesses to his state.
Yet as he seeks the GOP presidential nomination, he emphasizes government’s adverse effects on economic growth.
If Republican voters actually care about the principles they espouse (as opposed to suffering from ODS), then something like this would be a big hit for Romney - causing them to not vote for him if he gets the nomination.
Excuse me if I don’t hold my breath waiting for that to happen.

He has a .22 LR semi-auto already. (Plus a few older bolt action ones.) That should cover small critter.
Deer hunting in the area is shotgun only (using pumpkin ball or sabot rounds.) He has a 20 g Mossberg 500 for that (including a newly acquired rifled barrel.) There’s also a 8mm Mauser in the house (my father’s old deer rifle which I used when I deer hunted in PA.)
Neighbors are all 1/4 mile or farther away except for one direction. He also wants something that is farily low noise so as not to cause much disturbance. And I think he would favor something traditional looking as compared to something looking like an AR.
.223 is the favorite right now given the need to handle something as large as a coyote. I think .17 (?) was the other load in consideration. .257 Roberts was mentioned in another comment - I have no knowledge whatsoever about that one.
My guess is limited targets at once. Presumably groundhog, coyote, and possibly fox I guess. So relatively high velocity for flat-shooting and lower noise profile if possible.

Fortunately, it wasn’t a matter of need…we just lived in the country and hunting and shooting was entertainment. Dad said don’t kill anything unless you plan on eating it. So when my brother popped the deer, we took it home. Mostly we shot large bullfrogs at the pond behind our house and collected their legs. Yes. They do have plate/bowl privileges. Chicken corn chowder and anything where I have melted cheese gets a great deal of attention. And if I’ve done fried eggs there are definitely some grease and yolk bits still about.
The main reason I’m protective of the eggs is usually I only get a dozen from my brother when I come home from visiting. Nice, very fresh, free-range chicken eggs.

Chipper video accompanying the story that ends with a variation of “…it’s up to the North Korean government to know which tears are real or crocodile”. Yeah, and they get to decide who goes to the labor camps never to be seen again.
That’s the real story here - that the government is going to decide who isn’t mourning sufficiently to pass their cult of personality test, and if they fail, they’re toast. It’s similar to when Kim Il Song died.
Oh, and speaking of Kim Il Song, the North Koreans will display Kim Jong Il’s remains alongside his dad (despite the fact that the country is pretty much broke and can’t bother to feed itself).

The cats do pretty well. Wet food 3-4 times a day where they split a small can*, and dry food is always on-hand in a bowl. If I cook meat (chicken, pork, fish) some gets put aside and shredded for them before I spice it with something they don’t like or start adding onion/garlic. And besides regular cat food a can of tuna get opened for them once a week**.
* - And Pro-plan has a turkey in gravy with cheese bits that they both love. All the wet food helps keep them hydrated, and younger cat has bad teeth and doesn’t like chewing as compared to licking up gravy. Thus favoring giving them pate’ style cat food.
** - Well, one of them. Elder cat likes canned tuna while younger cat actually prefers cat food to it.
“Younger” cat is 13 and having health issues. “Elder” cat just hit 20 and is a crank-fest when he is not sleeping. Very much the Feline Overlord.

Mine subsisted on dry food and occasional scraps for years with wet food being a treat as well. With age and especially thyroid and/or kidney issues wet food becomes a preferred method to help keep them hydrated and as a medium to slip medicine in. I slipped over to that format about 5-6 years ago when I had elder cat and his brother and the brother had dehydration issues due to on-going loss of kidney function.
I also keep finding different foods they like. The younger cat considered an attack last night when I was eating a mix of chicken strips and roasted corn with cheese in a burrito wrap. All things she likes a great deal. The only thing that put her off was the hot sauce I had added as well.
And then there are biscuits. If I don’t guard those they are dragged onto the floor, slain, and consumed with gusto.

Obama proposes consolidation authority to merge government agencies, putting the onus on GOPers to show why they’d be against proposals that would result in a leaner and more streamlined federal government.
The President would require Congress to grant him the authority, and Congress would then have to approve the measure in an up/down vote.
For instance, the President is looking to consolidate six trade/commerce related agencies into one. That would result in a more efficient and streamlined process, so the GOP will have to either go along with the deal, or explain to constituents why they’re opposing such a move in an election year:
Obama’s first project would be to combine six major operations of the government that focus on business and trade.
They are: the Commerce Department’s core business and trade functions; the Small Business Administration; the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative; the Export-Import Bank; the Overseas Private Investment Corporation; and the Trade and Development Agency. The goal would be one agency designed to help businesses thrive. The official said 1,000 to 2,000 jobs would be cut, but the administration would do so through attrition; that is, as people routinely leave their jobs over time.
The administration said the merger would save $3 billion over 10 years by getting rid of duplicative overhead costs, human resources divisions and programs.
I’d say that’s good politics and good policy from the Obama Administration. It’s a start and could go much further but bureaucracies (and their political patrons) are stubborn to any kind of change and become too entrenched in the way things are done.

With younger cats I had issues with trash can raiding for chicken bones a few times as well. Potatoes and cheese are popular, as is cottage cheese. Younger cat likes corn and peas, especially if there is a little butter added (but I have seen unbuttered eaten as well).
Odder was the issue with bread (or rolls) in plastic bags. A few times I found bags of hamburger buns that had been dragged off of counters or tables and buns consumed by the bag being chewed/clawed open.
Not an issue now since neither cat has very good jumping ability. I’ll have to do some cat-proofing in the apartment once I bring in the next generation of FOs.

This can be done on so many levels.
I made a joke the other day about states consolidating… I wasn’t really joking. As an example; CT,MA, and RI should have about 80% of their Government services consolidated between each other…
But, who’d be in charge? therein lies the rub.

I’d say that’s good politics and good policy from the Obama Administration. It’s a start and could go much further but bureaucracies (and their political patrons) are stubborn to any kind of change and become too entrenched in the way things are done.
Those who fear a Communist-Style central government will say he is trying to create just that.

In the end, the only politician who I actually have faith in almost always wanting to get stuff done in the US today, rather than posing or making some obscure point, it’s Obama.
I think it’s his flaw, in that it makes him easy to blackmail. I think it’s, however, a very admirable quality, and if others had that quality— regardless of their political orientation— we’d be in much better shape.

NJ has been talking municipal consolidations for generations, and what happens? We go in the other direction with more of them, and despite the fact that some cosolidations make sense (like eliminating the Bergen County Sheriff and/or consolidating dozens of local police departments into a countywide position), nothing will happen because of the fiefdoms established aren’t going to go away and people think that their services will suffer.
If the Bergen County sheriff office closed, the service could be rolled into the existing services (most often, you’ll find them supplementing Paramus cops around Garden State Plaza or patrolling the Bergen county parks - Van Saun or Overpeck, as well as the Bergen County jail). Annual savings could be considerable, without any loss of service. Will it happen? Not likely.

Cuomo in NY and Christie in NJ have managed to get a lot of reforms done in their first two years in completely different styles. Christie’s far more combative publicly, but has managed to get property tax reforms and pension reforms done (though we’ll see how the sudden death of Assembly GOP Leader Decroce this past week will affect things going forward). Cuomo’s far less combative in his approach - but bordering on secretive to the extreme. The budgetary situation in NY is far worse, but they’ve managed to get the gay marriage bill passed and that’s just one part of his larger agenda to reform Albany.

I’ve been trying to figure that one out.
Some of his positions are, IMO, real head-scratchers (most notably, his empowerment of people like Summers in economic policy development, some of the foreign policy stuff). But there is something about his demeanor and philosophical approach that I tend to view favorably, pushing me towards a kind of trust I rarely, if ever, accord politicians.
I’m trying to reconcile that contradiction: what is the role of bias, wishful thinking, vulnerability to identity politics, etc.?

Red wine-heart research slammed with fraud charges
(Reuters Health) - A University of Connecticut researcher who studied the link between aging and a substance found in red wine has committed more than 100 acts of data fabrication and falsification, the university said Wednesday, throwing much of his work into doubt.
Dipak K. Das, who directed the university’s Cardiovascular Research Center, studied resveratrol, touted by a number of scientists and companies as a way to slow aging or remain healthy as people get older. Among his findings, according to a work promoted by the University of Connecticut in 2007, was that “the pulp of grapes is as heart-healthy as the skin, even though the antioxidant properties differ.”
“We have a responsibility to correct the scientific record and inform peer researchers across the country,” Philip Austin, the university’s interim vice president for health affairs, said in a statement.
The university said an anonymous tip led to an investigation that began in 2008. A 60,000-page report — the summary of which is available at bit.ly/xkyS4A — resulted, outlining 145 counts of fabrication and falsification of data. Other members of Das’ laboratory may have been involved, and are being investigated, the report continues.

It’s not really a photoshop mistake. People who are photographed for magazines live in an alternate dimension in which heads turn like owls, hands float through the air and latch onto people randomly, skin is the color and consistency of plastic, cellulite (and bellybuttons and sometimes entire parts of limbs) disappears like magic, and kneecaps are optional.
One must be special to live in this world.

Michael Moore is the most famous filmmaker in Iran, according to one of that nation’s most acclaimed directors. At a screening of Asghar Farhadi’s critically lauded “A Separation” at Sony’s screening room, the Iranian director spotted the “Fahrenheit 9/11” filmmaker in the audience. Farhadi quipped, “Michael Moore is the most famous director in Iran,” and said everyone knows his movies because they’re shown on national TV there. “[Farhadi] then joked how difficult it was for his own films to be seen in Iran,” our source added. Also there were CBS’s Bob Simon, Kristin Gore, producer Celine Rattray, “Boardwalk Empire” star Michael Stuhlbarg and James Toback. Farhadi has been the toast of New York this week, winning best foreign film awards from the New York Film Critics Circle and National Board of Review. “A Separation” is also getting Oscar buzz and has a flawless 100 percent “fresh rating” on review site Rotten Tomatoes. Moore didn’t respond to a request for comment.
He must be so proud. Heh.

I worked in a graphics agency, and most of it was piecework, delivered at the end of the day and needed immediately, if not yesterday. it was most always handed to someone who happened to still be sitting there, no matter how unskilled or fried from overwork.
