But technically, he said he is looking at running as the President of the United States of South Carolina, so unless you're registered to vote in the USSC, you might not be able to.

There was a story in Analog, must be 15 years ago now, about a comedian with a nightly show who declared his candidacy on the air a month or two before the election. The story ended with him waking up hungover on Wednesday morning as the President-elect going basically WTF! Good tale & rather scary to consider at the moment.

The one argument I've found against this is to try and avoid a situation where Obama wins the electoral vote but loses the popular, like Bush in 2000. It's not at all a likely scenario, but it happened once and that did happen again but with a Democratic winner the wingnuts would not take it gracefully, they'd be in all out civil war mode.

Another good point. Depressing a vote can be about reinforcing a mindset of futility that may not be representative of actual reality.

I have trouble finding Colbert amusing since his schtick is essentially simply what you see from politicians every day turned up a notch. It's too accurate in it's point dodging, word splitting, and outright lunacy to be funny except in a black comedy sort of way.

re: #21 Atlas Fails

Ah geez. It sucks all the more because it's the hierarchy, not the membership:

[Link: www.washingtonblade.com...]

U.S. Catholics are more supportive of LGBT rights, including same-sex marriage, than the general public and other Christians, according to a newly released study analyzing public opinion polls taken in 2010.

The study, conducted by the D.C.-based Public Religion Research Institute (PRRI), found that nearly three-quarters of Catholics support either allowing same-sex couples to marry (43 percent) or allowing them to legalize their relationships through a civil union (31 percent).

Just 22 percent of Catholics indicated same-sex couples’ relationships should not be legally recognized, the study found.

“If marriage for gay couples is defined as a civil marriage ‘like you get at city hall,’ Catholic support for allowing gay couples to marry increases by 28 points, from 43 percent to 71 percent,” a 22-page report describing the study’s findings says.

Catholics deserve a better church leadership. I remember growing up hearing bishops call for wars on poverty, to feed the hungry. Now I just hear about them denying communion to politicians who support abortion, or saying shit about gay people.

Average Salary

As of Nov. 5, 2010, the average salary of a Catholic priest for advertised openings in the United States was $40,000, according to Simply Hired. Yearly compensation from area to area varies widely, however, swaying as wide as $29,211 in Phoenix to $44,566 in Miami during 2010, according to Salary Expert. The Bureau of Labor Statistics' Occupational Outlook Handbook notes that a priest's take-home cash earnings may be significantly less--less than $20,000.

That's for priests, though, not bishops.

41 Obdicut  Sun, Jan 15, 2012 2:19:38pm

re: #38 Lidane

The difference between the church and the people-- and the culture-- is so extreme with the Catholic church. The Catholic populace is far nicer and wiser than the hierarchy. The Catholic philosophers and scientists of yore were actually very progressive at times. And yet the hierarchy is just reality-denying and weirdly obsessed with politics.

Bishops do have a salary. It is not published.
They also have a stipend for retirement, health care, pension fund and a car and expenses covered in retirement. They are provided a private secretary, and fairly unlimited travel expenses to visit Rome, or to carry out what they think is their mission.
They are well compensated as single men without obligations, and enjoy a life of ease and luxury similar to the wealthy upper class of Americans.

Also rather complex--the Archbishop of Boston, for example, technically has zero personal income. He is a Franciscan who has taken the required vow of voluntary poverty. That means he does not own his own clothes. (It does not mean, however, that he is likely to go naked or hungry.)

It's a disguised plug socket. I saw it on the Matrix.

Those precede the Matrix and go at least as far back as Saturn 3. Allows for the implanting of hierarchy instructions and the memory core of their predecessors.

Eli is an elite QB. If he's not at the same level as Rodgers, Brees and Brady, he's not off by much.

1. Monogamy is an easier vow than celibacy.

2. If you were married three times, then you broke the "'til death do us part" part.

Romo is good, but he won't get much credit for it until he's got a ring.

Who have two SB rings, which trumps just about anything else. Payton always seems nice enough in all those commercials he's in. I only saw him play live once against UK. Had a bad first half and the Cats ran up a big lead, then they couldn't stop the Vols in the second half and lost.

If Stephen Colbert's name is on the presidential ballot this November, I'll find it really difficult not to vote for him.

Becareful Charles, as lolz worthy as that would be, too many sane people voting for Colbert (if he's running as a third party candidate) could cost Obama be the victory.

If Colbert actually gets the GOP nomination feel free to vote away as I'll be joining you!

He can STFU. If I ever decide to get married, I damn well will, even if I'm not all that keen on having kids. At my age (I'll be 39 in April), kids are risky. And I'm already going to have enough debt with my student loans for grad school.

If I decide to be a parent, there are plenty of children out there looking for a loving home. I'd adopt.

This kinda bullshit is why I think the Separation of church and state should extend to marriage. Government should stick to contracted obligations between individuals, and the church can deny its blessing to whom ever they frelling want.
