In regards to salvage:

When the search for survivors and bodies is complete, Dutch salvage firm Smit International will remove the vessel’s fuel as requested by the ship’s owner and insurer. Smit has also offered to remove the wreckage of the Costa Concordia, but the owner has not contracted any firm for this. Carnival Corporation has issued an investor disclosure stating that “The vessel is expected to be out of service for the remainder of our current fiscal year if not longer.”

On 16 January, the CEO of Costa said that the ship could be refloated by giant inflatable buoys and then tugged away. However, he called it “one of the most difficult [undertakings] in the world.”

The Costa Concordia weighs 114,500 tons. The Titanic only weighed 46,328 tons.

Plenty of other people managed substantive criticism of OWS without resorting to the hyperbole, outright fabrications, and love for violence you displayed. Huntsman supporters, though few in number, are slightly moderate and likely to gravitate towards Romney. And the far right evangelical vote is still divided among the three remaining non-Romneys—Newt, Rick and Rick.

my point

You mean besides the one atop your head? Steve, what is it you think I’m not seeing about this situation that I must got out and “enlighten” myself about? What, you think if I got out and talk to a few folks, I’ll suddenly think it’s cool to piss on corpses?

gingrich sucks all the funny out of the air for an area of 47.5 square feet around him in all directions and replaces it with mean

Definitely, so why is he considered some master of rhetoric who could blow Obama off the stage? He’s had plenty of opportunities in the seemingly hundreds of gop debates to land knockout punches on people far less skilled than Obama, and I haven’t seen him take much advantage of it. All hat, no cattle.

He always seems to imply that if he really wanted to, he could win a debate, but he’s just too damn tired and bored to bother with it. Like he’s being kept from a much more important appointment and only debating to stave off boredom.

Newt too often acts like the debates are an insult to his intelligence, as though he’s humoring the yokels by speaking down from on high to them.

On the other hand, I never got Limbaugh’s appeal, either, and people apparently really enjoy listening to him. He’s a stammering guy with a soupy voice and he generally repeats things about five times; if he was saying things i thought were great I’d still have a hard time listening to him.

Maybe there’s a portion of people who are lulled into a gentle state by Newt’s languid hectoring.

I had a prof like that. It is “I am the great G-d from Mount Olympus and I am here to bestow these tidbits of knowledge upon you and you better be d*nm thankful I am doing it” syndrome. I can’t think of anything else to describe it.

Yeah, I had teachers like that in college as well. God help you if you tried to correct them during a lecture.

re: #111 Targetpractice, Worst of Both Worlds

My wife has run into quite a few in med school— it’s inevitable, since there’s so much information churn, that professors will sometimes not know something that a student does, just ‘cuz the student read it in a journal or somesuch. But it’s a rare prof that can take that with good grace.

Limbaugh’s resentment level is always turned up to 11. So he gets the angry right wingers who see liberals as an economic and social threat to real America. He also makes conservative white racists feel justified by appropriating victimology rhetoric and pointing out the alleged worse racism on the other side. Sick nativist reactionary BS, but it works on a lot of people in a country this big and diverse.
