Live Video: Fox News/GOP Debate in Myrtle Beach

The drama, the tension, the unrelieved ennui
Politics • Views: 22,684

The GOP clown car arrives tonight in Myrtle Beach; I’m sure everyone is filled with a delirious sense of anticipation. The wingnut herd has been ruthlessly thinned lately, and five candidates remain, four of whom have no real purpose except to prop up the pretense that someone other than Mitt Romney stands a chance at the nomination.

Fox News will be promoting the Republican Party tonight, as is their wont.

UPDATE at 1/16/12 6:22:57 pm

Here’s a live audio feed.

Tonight’s competition: Gingrich and Santorum will struggle to out-wingnut each other, to show the faithful that each one of them is the true ABR.

Tonight’s debate format will be Mitt Romney taking 15 minutes to point and laugh at each of the other candidates in turn.

8 Stanley Sea  Mon, Jan 16, 2012 5:56:39pm

My Dad lives there. Last time I saw him he was kind enough to turn off Fox on the TV for me. (he’s the best Dad, and really showed he loved me by doing that for a week.)

I called him & asked if he was going. He said nah, we couldn’t talk long, and we tread ever so lightly with specific political views - we know we disagree badly. But the one thing we talked about was how he was a member of a local blog, that ended up meeting once a month in person. He said (with a lot of emotion, dog I love him) how everyone was so incredibly different in their political views but once they all got together they were just the best friends.

He (and I concurred) that we have both gone way more centrist because of the benefit of talking with people on our respective blogs with different views. Best political conver with my Dad is ever.

That will get me through listening to the lies tonight. And really, that is what’s getting to me. The blatant lies of Romney I’m hearing.

I’d answer that by saying that Santorum is playing a double game with that answer:

1. He’s trying to go after the pro-Mitt Super-PAC in order to portray himself as the Wronged Underdog.

2. He’s looking ahead to the general election by working to shield himself against the inevitable charge of “GOP Racism!”. By talking about the MLK Voting Rights Bill and his support for anti-AIDS help for Africa, Rick Santorum is making a case that he is not a racist.

Aren’t demagogues supposed to be charismatic and convincing?

Only in Hollywood films.

All a demagogue needs is to get people behind him. Usually done by playing to peoples’ egos and very, very near-term views.

Romney is another fake tough guy who thinks he’s a tough guy. It’s quite amusing to watch really.

Policy wise, he has so little in common today with the guy he was 10 years ago, he’s almost unrecognizable.

As for Romney’s plan to repeal Obamacare, that’s tempting bloody red meat for the gop base. But there are people already positively affected by some of its regulations. And repealing without a backup would be devastating. The insurance cos. won’t go along with a plan that doesn’t supply them new customers. They would lose money otherwise. You can’t just keep the popular parts of Obamacare and jettison the mandate.

Go back to Austin, Rick! We have a drought!

I loved Obama’s response: “Perry’s state is on fire, and he doesn’t believe global warming exists or could cause extreme weather events.”

Figure he’ll be gone by Sunday. He’s hoping that the South will revive him, but right now it looks like it’ll be Romney or Newt.

He sure as hell should be. Dead last in NH, with 0.7% of the vote. Even in Iowa, he only got 10%.

That above had nothing to do with current politics. It was just my customary kick at Chicago’s historically corrupt political culture.

Is it any wonder he is doing so well in the primary? If I was a republican, I’d be saying “who do I vote for? Crap, Paul is the only one who ever says anything not insane.”

re: #443 Dark_Falcon

One thing Ron Paul seemingly cannot do is to step away from purism, not even in a time-critical situation. He’d rather fail by his version of ‘The Book’ than win by compromising. Which is a big part of why he would be an utter failure as president.

I might just steal that.

Not necessary. Our Dear Leader thinks he is American and therefore takes his orders from America, and Alberta who wants to be Texas.
