Poor Eugene Robinson had to be in that audience. He said the “New South” looks a lot like the Old South based on that audience.

39 Dark_Falcon  Mon, Jan 16, 2012 8:18:53pm

One thing that struck me was the purist DERPage from both of the Texas candidates. Both Romney and Santorum caught FLaK as being accused of betraying conservative values. In both cases, what that really meant was that Santorum and Romney had simply had to compromise and accept a somewhat-bad (from their standpoint) bill on which they had major input in order to avoid a really bad bill in which they’d have had no input at all.

It’s nice for Paul and Perry that the GOP controls the state government as absolutely as it does in Texas, but in other parts of the country compromise is needed. It may not draw a rousing cheer from the crowd, but a good compromise is one of the marks of an effective political leader.

The difference is that tonight that tactic got turn on Romney and Santorum as well, and descended thence into madness. For if compromise is impossible, then so is effective governance.

This is who conservatives will be voting for in November.

Romney stirs immigration debate as he’s endorsed by hard-liner Kobach

Immigration advocates in Florida and nationwide Monday lashed out at Mitt Romney’s embrace of Kris Kobach, the co-author and moving force behind state laws designed to root out illegal immigrants.

Some other Republicans oppose Romney’s immigration policy but support him anyway on the belief that he can defeat President Barack Obama and revive the economy.

“On immigration, yeah, we have big-time differences,” said U.S. Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart, R-Miami, who hosted a “cafecito” campaign event for Romney at a Doral restaurant. “He is very much a hard-liner, and that’s not going to change. So we will continue to disagree on many aspects of it. But on creating jobs, on national security, on getting the economy going, he’s just the right guy at this moment. That’s the priority.”

More on this dumb, stupid confederate.

Now I’m waiting on Romney (R - The Church of Curse of Cain) to reject an open white nationalist bigot, and distance himself from it.

(Which is about on the level of waiting for Luap Nor to reject Don Black.)

Waiting…waiting… .. ok, well congratulations, GOP. And happy MLK day. /// e_e

Bigots are a-okay, provided they support conservative causes/politicians and are predominantly white. But if they’re black, liberal, and support a black presidential candidate, then we need wall-to-wall coverage 24/7. Especially if they say something catchy, like “Goddamn America.”

As to that remark that earned fmr. Spkr. Gingrich a standing ovation the SC debate (FNC transcript):

WILLIAMS: The suggestion that he made was about a lack of work ethic. And I’ve got to tell you, my e-mail account, my Twitter account has been inundated with people of all races who are asking if your comments are not intended to belittle the poor and racial minorities.
You saw some of this reaction during your visit…
(BOOING)
… to a black church in South Carolina. You saw some of this during your visit to a black church in South Carolina, where a woman asked you why you refer to President Obama as “the food stamp president.” It sounds as if you are seeking to belittle people.
(BOOING)
GINGRICH: Well, first of all, Juan, the fact is that more people have been put on food stamps by Barack Obama than any president in American history.
(APPLAUSE)
Now, I know among the politically correct, you’re not supposed to use facts that are uncomfortable.
(LAUGHTER)
(APPLAUSE)
Second, you’re the one who earlier raised a key point. There’s — the area that ought to be I-73 was called by Barack Obama a corridor of shame because of unemployment. Has it improved in three years? No. They haven’t built the road. They haven’t helped the people. They haven’t done anything.
(APPLAUSE)

I’m pretty sure the reason President Obama was unsuccessful in his efforts to repair the dilapidated “corridor of shame” schools was because fmr. SC Gov. Mark Sanford rejected 700+ million of the SC stimulus to score cheap political points (at the expense of his constituents).

[Link: www.cbsnews.com…]

At this point, most 18 year olds would be coasting through their last weeks in high school.

But Casey Edwards is taking Governor Mark Sanford all the way to the state Supreme Court over the governor’s refusal to accept federal stimulus money - some $700 million in aid for South Carolina’s schools.

“The fact that we’re going to turn down money when we desperately need it, really bothered me,” Edwards said.

Over the past year, Edwards and her friends have been working to improve impoverished schools along South Carolina’s I-95 - a stretch of rural districts known as the Corridor of Shame, reports CBS News correspondent Jeff Glor.

Bud Ferillo made a documentary about the issue, “Corridor of Shame: The Neglect of South Carolina’s Rural Schools.”

In a statement, the governor told CBS News he’s “looking out for school children who will be forced to pay back the so-called stimulus bill.”

South Carolina’s legislature has voted to accept the money, but the governor is expected to veto the bill.

Yep, 22 years in May.

A friend of mine has been talking to a recruiter. How much influence, if any, does the recruiter, or the recruit, have on job assignment? I figure it’s pretty much the Navy decides what’s up and that’s it, that a recruit shouldn’t trust any promises of one particular job or area or anything.

I prefer the aeropress, which is the same principle but less messy.

Basically, a french press is a wire mesh and a container. You put the grounds in the container, you pour in the hot water, and then you press the mesh down so the grounds get trapped at the bottom.

They’re icky to clean and the wire meshes never really get completely clean.

Not my area of expertise, but unless he/she gets it in writing it is just talk. Recruiters have certain billets to fill and depending on your friends ASVAB sccore and education level, that will drive what jobs they could get.

In this economy, the military can be more picky on who they recruit, although the Navy’s manning will most likely either remain steady or slightly increase over the next few years with the shift in focus away from ground forces and toward the Pacific theater (which is made up of a whole lot of water).

the coffee does not pass through a filter, it retains a lot of its aromatic oils and the like. next best thing to cowboy coffee.

If you use a metal screen on an aeropress, you get the same unfiltered effect but it’s so much easier to clean up.

But they make the best coffee. Starbucks QA lab uses them to make samples. Ours is a stainless thermos-flask design. (Three dollars from a thrift store.) And I’m drinking from it at this minute. ‘Morning, all.

Gona go make some myself in a minute.

To get the screens really clean, you have to take them apart and run them through a dishwasher.

Another trick: place the grounds in first with a few tablespoons of water, let them soak for about three minutes before adding the hot (but not poiling) water.

My friend is a good kid— 19— from a rough background, just got his GED, his mom just passed away after he took care of her and he’s losing their house. He’s got a gas station job right now but they’re kind of assholes to him and he’s got not so many opportunities. I’m thinking that, promising the moon or nay, the Navy might be a good choice for him.

Do you think it’d be a better idea for him to get some college first before going into it?

Oh, and he swims like a goddamn fish, if that’s even important in the Navy these days.

Given his situation, he probably won’t get many choices in the Navy. That being said, if he is a hard worker he could rise quickly in the Navy and even if he decides to get out after his first enlistment he has the awesome post 911 GI Bill to pay for his college and living expenses.

If he is a really good swimmer he might look into becoming a Search and Rescue Swimmer. That is a collateral job that pays a little extra. Assuming he gets a rating that assigns him to a ship, he can go to SAR Swimmer school and pick up that as a separate designator. Ships never have enough qualified guys, so if he is in good shape and a good swimmer, might be a good option.

Worked with a lot of small Army detachments on isolated foreign bases. They had no life for their 1-year tours, so the mess hall was the biggest morale factor. They tried to hire ex-Navy cooks. (One, the trophy holder, was from a BB.)

That’s great!

My grandfather wasn’t in the service but he was a longshoreman in Hoboken, NJ.

A little history about where he worked:

HOBOKEN’S LATER HISTORY

This history was taken from the book “Gritty Cities”, Mary Procter and Bill Matuszeski, authors, Temple University Press, 1978.

In the early 1900’s Hoboken was becoming important as a transportation center. The Delaware Lackawana and Western railroad terminated in Hoboken and commuters from New Jersey to Manhattan used the Hoboken Lackawana ferries, which remained in service until the sixties. The PATH (Port Authority Trans-Hudson) Tube was finally opened in 1908 after thirty years under construction. Major European steamship lines, such as Hamburg-American, Holland- American and Scandanavian, began to use Hoboken’s piers and turned Hoboken into a major trans-Atlantic port. Bars and restaurants flourished from the waterfront business. One of these, the Clam Broth House is still an attraction.

The first World War began the time of troubles. From 1914 to 1917 seventeen German ships were immobolized at Hoboken piers under harbor neutrality acts. When the US entered the war in 1917, the US government seized the piers, eliminating hundreds of thousands of dollars in tax revenues, for which the city finally received token compensation in 1950. Further revenues were lost from liquor licenses when the government closed bars within a half mile as part of the establishment of a port of embarkation for troops to Europe. Worst of all, the prosperous German community was destroyed. Part of the city was under martial law and Germans were sent to Elllis Island. Thousands of Germans left Hoboken.

By 1920 Italians outnumbered Germans among the foreign born and Hoboken was becoming known as an Italian City. Manufacturing, shipbuilding and the docks remained important. Increasingly, however, the waterfront was plauged with crime and racketeering.

Apart from the soldiers, who knew Hoboken in both World Wars, the American public got its strongest impression of the city from Elia Kazan’s 1954 movie On the Waterfront. The script, by Budd Schulberg, won Best Story and Screenplay - presented by: the Academy Awards , was based on a 1948 New York Sun series of articles about waterfront corruption. The film is the story of the uncovering of a waterfront crime, and used actual dockworkers as extras. Kazan hired bodyguards to protect him throughout the filming on location in Hoboken. Some $30,000 had to be added to the budget to cover payoffs to Hoboken landlords charging exorbhitant rents. Terry, the character played by Marlon Brando, was based on an actual labor union informant named Arthur J. Browne.

Today the shipyards are dead. The enormous Port Authority piers have been closed since 1975. Numerous residential and commercial developments are underway in their place.

Greets and saluts from the slightly icy and slippery NYC metro area. After that freak snow in October, you would have thought that we were going to be hammered by a harsh winter, but so far it’s been anything but.

I guess buying that snowblower in November was good insurance against having snow. /

In other news, sad to hear that five more bodies were recovered from the Costa Concordia, and new reports from Italian media outlets show that the captain did abandon ship before the passengers were safely rescued and that he refused to return to the ship even as he was ordered to; he’s been charged in connection with those actions.

It still doesn’t quite explain why the ship was so close to the coast and why it was off-course compared to the normal Costa routes. There were some reports claiming that the captain was making a close approach to the island on behalf of some member of the crew, but that still doesn’t explain why they got that close - did the sonar function properly and did the crew use it to chart the course?

The captain claimed that the underwater rocks that ripped open the hull “were not on the charts” but he did get closer to the island than the set course.

This was an even bigger FAIL than the titanic and the only reason there were fewer casualties is that the water temperature was relatively mild and it was about a 3-minute swim to shore. If the Costa had gown down in freezing water like the Titanic there would have been far fewer survivors.

re: #246 publicityStunted

I have to think that they did carry out some form of drug testing, but I haven’t seen reports to confirm that. There were also unconfirmed reports that some passengers claimed to have seen the captain drinking (what it was he was drinking is unknown as well).

Also, if there were delays in when any of that testing was done, it would reduce the chances that they’d find that he was indeed DUI.

Not only closer than the set course; the Daily Mail article that a couple of us linked upthread also points out that he got closer than any other Costa captains before him. Apparently, it is traditional for them to sail closer to the island to sound a salute, but this captain decided to showboat.

I’m going to use a shade cloth covering probably from late june through September. there’s also an automatic vent that opens when temps get too high. It will be a challenge to figure out for the first year. I might tie the greenhouse into my home heating/cooling system. I’ll have to wait and see how it goes.

A smart enough air handler might actually give you days of heat gain in the house (if you can handle the humidity). I’ve actually thought of dumping my clothes dryer air into the hoophouse on rare sub-freezing nights, but the throw would probably be too great for even insulated flex-duct.

I think I really screwed-up punctuating that sentence. Since the intertoobs have come into my life, my spelling and writing mechanics have degenerated tremendously. I can’t even remember what is correct.

Hubby asked me last night if the quotation marks came before or after the period at the end of a sentence. I specifically remember getting that right in 6th grade on the test. Couldn’t specifically remember what the correct answer was last night.

It got my attention, even though I prefer straight mysteries without the sci-fi. Two things that bothered me:

1. The script writers don’t even know that an SFPD detective is called “Inspector” not “Detective.”

2. How come they can give the hot girl a fat guy sidekick but they can’t give a hot guy a fat girl sidekick?

I watched the first hour of the premier, and thought it had an interesting premise. It’s a procedural, but has sci-fi/fantasy aspects. Not much chemistry between the Hurley and the Madsen, though that might come. Sam Neill was perfect in that role. Sinister, creepy, and with a lot to hide.

Seems that the girl’s role was meant for someone like Claire Daines or Julia Styles, but found this Sarah Jones to fit the bill instead.

It’s an implied threat against people doing their jobs and their families. It’s intended to create fear and intimidation. Just a few days ago LGF was outraged towards threats against MIT scientists and their families. Anti-Abortion terrorists use the same tactic by publishing the names and addresses of doctors hoping that one of their flock will kill them. This is the same thing but since it’s affiliated with OWS the radical left doesn’t seem to think it’s a problem.

I watched the first hour too. Looks interesting. It’s funny. Only time I’ve gotten into sci-fi like shows has been when the cops have been involved. I got a kick out of the US version of Life on Mars for example. Always have been fascinated by time travel which I can trace back to five year old me renting Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure. The premise is enticing: somebody/something is performing a time-travel experiment involving convicted felons and prison guards, but we don’t know who is doing this or why (to create a gang of disposable assassins?). I just hope we get more information in solving the puzzle in upcoming episodes and they don’t save up the entire mystery for the season/series finale.

If the series becomes too time-travelly/woowoo I probably won’t watch it.

Massive credit card fraud alone is enough to arrest them. DDOS attacks are also illegal, hacking private computer systems as well. Pretty much everything they do is illegal. I don’t know why there haven’t been more arrests, I haven’t seen a good explanation for it.

All of that is great, but now you have to prove it. And therein lies the rub: Anonymous, by and large, was not born yesterday. These people are what you’d consider professional Internet assholes, and they know how to cover their tracks. I’m not saying it’s impossible to track them down and make arrests, but it’s difficult, and all the more so to establish the burden of proof.

That’s the only explanation I can think of as well. I suspect the laws for getting IP and user information from service providers is probably a mess. That will eventually change. Not only is getting IP and user information from an ISP a hassle (depending on the provider and the circumstances), but you also have to obtain the IP in the first place. I’d wager that many participants in Anonymous activities make use of the Tor anonymizing network, among other tools. Backtracing data flow through a multiple routed network like that is a nightmare.

The reason we’ll lose internet freedoms is not that there’s a loosely based rogue organization of hackers stirring up trouble. We’ll lose internet freedoms because there’s money to be made by taking away our freedoms. Agreed, but I’m on the fence. There is a reason to protect copyrights and intellectual property. A lot of artists make a living from their art and stealing it is wrong. Google has realized that their biggest profit potential comes from deregulation of the internets. I’m not disagreeing that copyright holders deserve protection. I make my living on intellectual property, as a programmer. However, the studios are stuck in their old business model, and rather than changing to adapt to new technology and new consumer demands, they are instead going the draconian route by attempting to legislate that their way is the one and only way to access their content. If they would just loosen up and listen to the consumers they’re so busy trying to alienate, perhaps they could come up with new ways to make money that don’t rely on per-copy profits.

So what happens to blogs like LGF if one can only blog openly, with anonymous logins to protect our privacy or anonymity? A few of us blog open already, but far more desire anonymity and for perfectly healthy reasons.

That was a trick question to lead you to my feeling that ordinary blog savvy users are a critical advocate for privacy. I think what we have to remember is our principles of privacy as we enjoy (or perhaps before 9/11) are entirely independent of technology. That is to say the logical appropriate application of our expectations is to migrate privacy standards and search and seizure rule to each technology intact. From letters to phones to internet/email to whatever comes next…

There are laws for that stuff on the books. The state is not actually obligated to make it easier for the studios to battle copyright infringement.

And the goalposts keeps moving. Look how Disney and others have been able to influence the extension of copyright a few times already.

This isn’t a black/white conflict. The balancing act is getting information and creative works into the public sphere where they can promote synergies as compared to allowing a creator to gain some profit from their creations. There are pressures that allow abuse coming from both sides of the issue, as well as a decent amount of historical baggage. And this is not even mentioning the issues involving domestic vs. international copyright laws and the can o’worms involved in dealing with international copyright violations and related piracy.

I think we should have state media stores (like some states do with liquor). You want to put a copy of that song on your iPod? Bring the unopened CD, a receipt that shows you have sole ownership of the iPod, and take a number…also, if you’ll sign this pledge to not play over external speakers? Thank you.

Oh, this is fun. I’ll bet the entertainment industry loved hearing this:

Supreme Court justice: broadcast TV on “borrowed time,” so why worry about indecency?

The Supreme Court heard oral arguments today for FCC vs Fox Television Stations. The case pits the television networks against the Federal Communications Commission, the latter fighting for its right to regulate “fleeting” expletives and brief nude scenes on over-the-air TV. Cher and Nicole Richie star in the nearly eight year old legal drama, as do several actors from an episode of NYPD Blue.

One comment during questioning by Justice Samuel Alito caught our eye. It was directed at Carter Phillips, an attorney for Fox who wants the FCC’s stricter indecency rules struck down.

“Well, broadcast TV is living on borrowed time,” Alito declared. “It is not going to be long before it goes the way of vinyl records and 8 track tapes.”

“I hope that—I’m sure my client is not thrilled to have you say that,” Phillips responded.

“Well, I’m sure your clients will continue to make billions of dollars on their programs which are transmitted by cable and by satellite and by Internet,” Alito persisted. “So why not let this die a natural death? Or why do you want us to intervene?”

The one that made me laugh was the CD copy protection that could be defeated by a permanent marker.

360 lawhawk  Tue, Jan 17, 2012 8:59:37am

Creators of media should have some protections and enforcement to make sure that their works of art are protected. The RIAA and others that have fought to extend copyright protections beyond the already previously extended limitations periods makes a mockery of the system.

Disney forced an extension of protections so that they could protect Mickey Mouse and Donald Duck for a little while longer, but that issue will come up once again as they near the new expiration date in a few years time.

Copyright doesn’t mean gaining profits in perpetuity. The public benefits from having works of art revert to the public domain after time; and it forces creators to, well, create new products. After all, Disney got to profit from public domain use of various fairy tales, and so too can other entities as the Disney copyrights expire.

As far as protecting music works of art, some artists have gone direct to public sales or offering free downloads of some works to entice others to buy other products. In some ways, itunes and downloads allow people to buy the stuff they like, rather than being forced to buy an entire CD from which only one song is worth listening to. There’s money to be made in the downloads too, and how the artists can monetize their works is an interesting development since its the recording industry that finds itself exposed as a middleman that can be completely avoided.

After all, someone could make a high quality recording in their basement and push it to the Net without any overhead (as in the cd/vinyl pressings), advertising, etc. That’s more worrisome to the recording industry than anything else, since if established artists move away from the recording industry as it is now, the cash cow dies with it. Instead of adjusting to the changed circumstances of the recording industry, they’re focusing on copyright violation as a savior to the industry, even though that’s not nearly the problem that it’s made out to be.

I’ve never given her a cent!

In 1935, “Happy Birthday to You” was copyrighted as a work for hire by Preston Ware Orem for the Summy Company, the publisher of “Good Morning to All”. A new company, Birch Tree Group Limited, was formed to protect and enforce the song’s copyright. In 1998,[10] the rights to “Happy Birthday to You” and its assets were sold to The Time-Warner Corporation. In March 2004, Warner Music Group was sold to a group of investors led by Edgar Bronfman Jr. The company continues to insist that one cannot sing the “Happy Birthday to You” lyrics for profit without paying royalties: in 2008, Warner collected about $5000 per day ($2 million per year) in royalties for the song.[1], pp. 4,68 This includes use in film, television, radio, anywhere open to the public, or even among a group where a substantial number of those in attendance are not family or friends of whoever is performing the song. For this reason, most restaurants or other public party venues will not allow their employees to perform the song in public, instead opting for other original songs or cheers in honor of the birthday celebrant.

Let’s not mix copyright infringement and stealing. Stealing is when one no longer has one’s precious.

Remember this?

Judge bans DVD X Copy software

DVD duplication software maker 321 Studios has been given seven days to stop selling its controversial DVD X Copy family of utilities, a US federal judge has ruled.

The ruling follows legal action brought against the developer by MGM Studios, Tristar Pictures, Columbia Pictures, Time Warner Entertainment, Disney, Universal City Studios and The Saul Zaentz Company last May. The movie companies alleged 321’s product violated the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA).

US District Judge Susan Illston, delivering her verdict on Friday, agreed - and formally banned 321 form manufacturing, distributing or otherwise trafficking in the DVD X Copy series.

I still have a copy of that on one of my old computers currently collecting dust in the attic.

Romney has a lower tax rate than I do.

And yet, he says this:

Romney Claims He’s ‘Not Worried About The Rich,’ But Wants To Cut Their Taxes By One-Third

ROMNEY: I would like 25 percent, but right now it’s at 35, so people better pay what is legally required. But ultimately let’s get it down to as low as we possibly can, if it’s 20, if it’s 25, but paying more than 25 percent, I think, is taking too much out of our pockets.

BAIER: So the highest you had was 35?

ROMNEY: Well, that’s what the law is right now, but 25 is where I would like to see us go.

By his own math, he’d have a 10% tax hike.

re: #392 Lidane

This is actually the worst part of that for me:

During the same press conference, Romney said that he only makes some income from speaker’s fees, “but not very much,” which is money that would be taxed at normal income tax rates. From Feb. 2010 to Feb. 2011, Romney earned $362,000 in speaker’s fees.

I know relative to his wealth, that’s not very much, but it does show how classically out of touch he is that he can describe it that way.

And that’s not a full-time job. That’s probably like a total of a month’s work, if that.

At least I can get through today knowing that Rick Perry wouldn’t even win the Texas primary:

Romney, Dewhurst lead in Texas

Rick Perry’s Presidential campaign is doing about as bad in Texas now as it is everywhere else in the country. When PPP last polled the state in September he was at 49%, leading Mitt Romney by 39 points. Now Perry’s support has declined by 31 points, leaving him in 3rd place at 18%. Mitt Romney at 24% and Newt Gingrich at 23% lead the way with Rick Santorum at 15%, Ron Paul at 12%, and Buddy Roemer at 0% rounding out the field behind Perry.

What might be most shocking on this poll is that Romney edges Perry 46-45 if Republican voters had to pick just between the two of them. When we asked that identical question four monhs ago Perry led Romney 72-18. There’s been a 55 point shift in Romney’s direction.

It’s not just that Texas Republicans are no longer planning to vote for Perry- a lot of them even feel that Perry’s candidacy has hurt Texas’ image. 39% of GOP voters think his candidacy has been a negative for perceptions of the state, while only 13% believe it’s been a positive. By comparison just 28% of primary voters believe Ron Paul’s campaign has been bad for the state’s image to 19% who believe it’s been a positive.

There’s a real distinction. You steal someone’s ashtray, they no longer have an ashtray. If you steal a copy of a BMP image of an ashtray, they still have the ashtray.

There is a real separation. It doesn’t mean that stealing intellectual property is therefore A-OK, but people are perfectly right to draw the distinction between depriving someone of something and not doing so.

Agh I hate dealing with Ron Paul fans. Someone in a facebook political group some college friends started said something like MLK should have shut up about economics issue because he was unqualified to talk about it. So I pointed out that Paul is treated like an economics guru even though he’s got no educational background in economics. And Paul supporter puts words in my mouth insinuating I called him crazy. Yeah, my friend posted an article about MLK’s involvement in the fight for economic justice and someone I assume one of our economics majors given GMU’s reputation having some very Austrian school professors said that. I also pointed out that people talk about issues they’re “unqualified” to talk about all the time. And frankly given the poverty of the times, I think he wa qualified to talk about it. There was a reason why Lyndon Johnson declared a war on poverty.

I guess my distinction is: Did you take something for which you were expected to pay?

Once when I was photoshopping a photograph for a family calendar, I took a picture of a shoe from a department store website. They weren’t selling pictures of shoes, they were selling shoes. They weren’t expecting to make money from the picture of the shoe in the catalog, at least not directly.

Now, when I used images, I bought a royalty-free disk, or bought a postcard, scanned it, then threw it away, because the user expected to make money from the image itself.
